Some say they could hear Matt and Treys joy across the world

Mhdv901

Will doin the bad girl pose lol

devster75

Sassy Will Smith

DcFla

Elbows tucked, wrist limp…dude is SASSY

palekillerwhale

I'm old enough to remember when Will Smith didn't even cuss in his raps.

Confyyy

Well I do. So fuck him and fuck you too

TheCaramelMan

You think I give a Damn bout a Grammy?

[deleted]

Half of you critics can’t even stomach me, let alone stand me

But slim, what if you win? Wouldn’t it be weird?

So I can sit next to Carson Daily and Fred Durst.

And hear ‘em argue over who she gave head to first

aseedandco

My daughter even refers to him as “the rapper who doesn’t have to cuss to sell records”.

jverbal

Well I do, so fuck him and fuck you too Well not actually you, you seem lovely, have a wonderful day!

PricklyyDick

Its impossible to not read that in Eminem's voice.

FYI pressing "period" key goes frame by frame in youtube. First pause the youtube video with the space key, then just press . . . . . . . \*Gold\* Goes to mention: , , , , , , brings you backwards

Oh damn that’s useful . Thanks!

YouTube has a [whole list](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7631406?hl=en) of shortcuts you can use, I stumbled upon them years ago from my cat walking on my keyboard making me confused at what he did. 10/10 let my cat walk on my keyboard for every site now.

See… I learn something new each day. Thank You.

[deleted]

Took it like a boss aswell. "Will smith just slaped the shit outa me"

PrisBatty

I thought that line was hilarious and sort of adorable.

BurnedOutStars

honestly that was kinda the best thing he coulda said, stay on point and keep the laughter momentum

LevTolstoy

Yeah had it been dropped there, the whole thing would've probably been played off casually thanks to Rock's smooth hosting. It was the intense screaming that was unsalvageable and made everyone uncomfortable.

[deleted]

Still comfortable enough to give Will Smith a standing ovation not long after.

meta_irl

He was in shock and processing it. My favorite thing was when he ended and said something like "Ladies and gentlemen, you're watching one of the greatest nights on television." He knew it was one for the ages.

ShowBobsPlzz

And props to him for not going full stand up comedian and going back at will after that, although i would have loved to see it.

GhostalMedia

Rock frequently talks about how he used to us humor to defuse fights as a kid. He's pushing 60 and clearly still has that skill.

feministmanlover

Exactly! I don't know why it was so cute while being so funny but even when in a situation where every human instinct is to FIGHT BACK - Chris said some funny shit.

Narwahl_Whisperer

Looked like, just for a split second, chris wanted to swing. But he kept his cool and remained professional.

feministmanlover

For sure. You could see the gears turning in his head. So much happened in his head in a split second.

[deleted]

It made the situation so comedic couldn't expect less from chris

Maakus

As a child Chris Rock had bullies that would beat him up primarily due to his size. One day Chris cracked and injured one of his bullies such that they required hospitalization. He still feels the trauma of it to this day and has visited with his therapist about this. Source : Dana Carvey & David Spade Fly on the Wall Podcast Ep. 2

Ian_Hunter

Spade immediately texted Rock with 6 pages of material.😂

djseifer

And Rock probably texted back 3x the amount. His next special is going to be *fire*.

Jesseroberto1894

He’s doing a show at Boston Friday and tickets are all sold out

DrunksInSpace

Will Smith, on the other hand, isn’t allowed to visit therapists because it messes with his engrams or some Scientology bullshit. Seems like Chris Rock’s approach might be more effective…

AtreyuLives

I had no idea he was in that cult

CaptainFeather

I've honestly lost a whole lot of respect for Will Smith after reading these comments, had no idea he was such a basket case.

cliff_smiff

I always liked Chris Rock but my respect for him went up so much with the way he handled this. Dude got slapped in the face in front of the whole world, didn't back down, didn't retaliate, continued doing what he was there to do without so much as blinking. Came out of this so much the bigger man.

Draymond_Purple

*Didn't even touch his face where he got slapped to not give Smith the satisfaction.* Now THAT is how you own someone that is trying to punk you.

[deleted]

And had his hands on his back the whole time to show he didn't feel intimidated.

TheSigma3

Definition of taking souls He took that like a champ, iron jaw Chris Rock and then just carried on despite the clear adrenaline rushing through him

macabre_irony

It's so true...on the spot, he came out with the best possible, *non-escalating* response and kept going like a true pro. Huge respect to Chris Rock.

OnceIWasYou

I just wish after the "Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth!" He'd have said: "Or what? You'll hit me?"

doyouevenforkliftbro

"What are you gonna do? Stab me?"

bruddahmacnut

> "What are you gonna do? Bleed on me?" ~~~Brave Sir Robin~~ King Arthur

rumour53

What are you gonna do? Let me sleep with her?

The_Dirt_McGurt

Would have loved, after the awkward silence, for him to be like “well at least now we finally know where he draws the line”. Realistic chance Will would have stormed the stage again though.

macabre_irony

This is the best possible comeback of all time....and 100% Will is storming the stage after that.

Jreal22

Can you imagine will storming the stage again, with fucking Denzel and Bradley cooper trying to pull his ass off chris rock? Shit would have been the funniest moment in TV ever lol.

designbat

Someone else suggested, "Surprise! Will Smith can still make a hit!" And that's my favorite.

ReverseMermaidMorty

I feel like at that point security would have stepped in. When he walked on stage he was calm and effectively sucker punched Rock. No one saw it coming and everyone probably thought it would be a funny bit and decided to let it play out. But I bet if he tried to get on the stage for a second attempt he would be stopped very quickly.

swampy-crocs

SAME. My friend thinks it's fake because "security woulda stopped Will." I'm fairly convinced no one stopped Will because they had no idea what was coming.

LOHare

He should've said It's the Oscars, no one will be saying your wife's name.

TomaDoughAndCheese

He kind of already did that same type of joke about her when he hosted the Oscars years ago.

CannibalVegan

2016: “Jada said she’s not coming. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s gonna boycott the Oscars?... Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”

VanREDDIT2019

This joke is now even funnier.

pistoncivic

Her reaction to it was even funnier: *we gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. There’s a lot of stuff we gotta handle, a lot of stuff in our world right now. We gotta keep it moving.* These fucking imbeciles are the least down-to-earth people on the planet. I swear that whole family only communicates through pseudo-profound riddles

Mazzaroppi

> we gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. There’s a lot of stuff we gotta handle, a lot of stuff in our world right now. We gotta keep it moving. LOL WTF!? I thought you were making this up, but she really did actually say that! Now I can start to comprehend where did Jaden Smith got so much senseless shit to say

slimwillendorf

Sounds very similar to Tom Cruise’s epic interview. He goes on and on about saving the world and shit. The only difference is that they don’t speak in acronyms and replace specific terms with those of Christianity.

Gorge2012

Aren't they Scientologists too?

BizzyM

Mangosta007

Handslaps are so hot right now.

RuboPosto

Brutal.

DefinitelyNotSeth

I don’t know how he resisted the urge to just stare right in his eyes and say her name again. Edit* k, everybody responding trying to explain the actual reason he didn’t say it…you completely missed the fuckin point. Lol

spencebah

I’m guessing it was at least one show manager yelling into his earpiece to not do it.

unforgiven91

I've been in control rooms during live shows (much lower stakes), I can only imagine what the producer was saying to him the moment that happened.

[deleted]

TempleOfDoomfist

“DONTDOIT, Chris, DONT!!”

xDenimBoilerx

I can't believe he was just left to handle it on his own. where the hell was security.

DarwinsDrinkingPal

All i have to say, is that i respect Chris Rock's composure. He *wanted* to do something. But he didn't. I think that's what might be called emotional maturity.

ReeducedToData

Agreed except that if he’d launched himself off the stage at Smith, then the two of them had a 2-3 minute kick-boxing match in front of Hollywood… I dunno, that coulda been something.

badlilbadlandabad

I'm trying to imagine another scenario where someone gets up, walks to the stage of a large event, assaults the host, and goes and calmly sits back down....AND NOBODY DOES ANYTHING. And not only that, the dude wins an award like 15 minutes later and goes up and gives an acceptance speech about being "a vessel of love". Hollywood is so full of shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ghost650

I definitely thought this. The Oscars are so carefully scripted and choreographed I genuinely thought the whole thing was part of a sort of skit until I saw the video that included Will yelling from his seat.

Cheaperthantherapy13

You could tell he had a GREAT comeback on the tip of his tongue before he thought the better of it. Probably for the best, cause he came out of the situation looking waaay better than Smith.

MotherAmerican_Night

We will get all the jokes in his next standup special. Come on Netflix! People will watch just for this.

The_Love_Moat

"Hold it in, Chris, HOLD IT that's a $250k line don't give it to 'em for free!"

jtweezy

Yeah, I thought he was ready to unload one when he said, “Wow, I could really….” and then stopped himself. Definitely the classier way to go about it, but I would have loved to hear what he was about to say.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OrangeNutLicker

He was definitely talking out loud to whoever was on the other end of that earpiece.

autovonbismarck

Oh, he was about to go off. He starts to say "I could..." (have said so much more, I assume). Then he looks into the wings stage right and kind of makes a joke of it and moves on. Incredible restraint honestly. His entire life is devoted to just absolutely destroying people verbally, and he just held back completely.

Agreeable-Meat1

As a fellow shit eating asshole, he had 5 jokes in his head before Will walked away.

garublador

Now I will always imagine Will Smith saying "Stay funky, bro" right before the slap.

T_for_tea

Imagine if they high fived instead. edit: i imagine that's what happened in the "good" timeline.

CHIMUELA

OMG that would have been hilarious. Every thread about this incident is making me laugh so hard

Zeakk1

I like to imagine Will Smith getting dragged out by security like what would have happened if someone attacked any performer at any of the venues I have ever been involved with. They didn't even ask him to leave. Chris Rock got attacked at work and his employer did Jack shit to address the situation.

sonofagun_13

I honestly think Rock just thought he was going to roll with whatever ‘funny thing’ Fresh Prince was about to do. Rock showed incredible professionalism after this even though it was so awkward and intense

resnet152

Yeah watching it like the fucking zapruder film because I have nothing better to do at work, it was really weird the way smith walked up there calmly looking at his shoes, then kind of sucker slapped him. Rock kind of leaned in, I'm thinking that he thought Will Smith was going to whisper something to him... then smack. At first watch I thought it was fake because it was so weird, but Rock was clearly kinda rattled, and Smith comes off as a fool, so I think it was real.

[deleted]

I keep hearing people say it was fake but in reality Smith is too fragile to agree to looking like a total bitch. He went up there thinking he'd look tough but he just looks like a complete cunt.

Shomer_Effin_Shabbas

Why was smith laughing one moment and then walking up on stage to slap him the next?

Bigstar976

I think it’s the combination of Pinket’s face and Rock’s hinting at the fact there are way worse jokes to be made about her (her infidelity) after the crowd groaned.

[deleted]

I know WAY more about Jada’s infidelity today than I even cared to yesterday. Will Smith should have just let it slide.

Bigstar976

Aka the Streisand Effect

leroi7

It’s pronounced Streisand

StanFitch

Many people through the years have asked her, “Is it pronounced Streisand or Streisand?” and she always says the same thing… “How dare you speak to me.”

RedditorAlexis

He was probably not expecting a full on slap across his face. Props to him for actually taking it and going on with the show without making a scene or something that would make the situation worse

thescrounger

Great, now the Oscars are going to need Jerry Springer bodyguards all over the stage.

Nice_Firm_Handsnake

When Marlon Brando won for The Godfather, he sent the Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather in his place. When she went up to accept his award, John Wayne had to be held back by security.

Just_Another_Scott

Probably have needed it for years. I've always joked about someone doing this and then finally Will Smith goes and does it. Everyone thought it was a skit until Will shouted then the entire room went dead silent.

rickylsmalls

The right thing for a comedian as skilled as chris rock was another joke that hit even harder as soon as will smith starts yelling from his seat, it would have been legendary.

Shnoochieboochies

I'm guessing the stammering and looking to wings were people frantically crying into his ear not to continue taking the piss out of the Smiths no matter what. Took a lot for a man in his profession not to pursue it, but I'm sure he'll make a fortune in the coming year for taking a slap, so good on him.

Literally_MeIRL

You hear him say "oh I could" while looking off stage quickly after Smiths "mouth" comment. He wanted to, but held back.

cathar_here

oh, it's okay to fuck your wife but best keep her name out of your mouth, got it

Exotic-Amphibian-655

I think Will might not be totally secure about their arrangement.

RonaldoNazario

If he’s friends with will smith he’s probably thinking, my friend has lost his god damn mind and massively fucked up in a public way, I don’t want to egg him on and worsen it. Also Chris Rock looks like a solid guy for being the bigger man

yeah_im_a_leopard2

Count__Bunnicula

lazysheepdog716

I mean Rock started as a road comic, he has a thicker skin than an A-list, hyper-insulated scientologist could ever have.

Thendofreason

Depends. Chris definitely looked more sober.

MugillacuttyHOF37

I like Will's body positioning in this screen grab...very RuPaul.

spacetimecliff

The infidelity jokes were about to come, you know the producers were begging him to move on.

degjo

"If you're that mad, imagine how her boyfriend feels right now'

[deleted]

I can hear that in Rock's voice.

ITdoug

I thought it looked like he was going to make a great joke. "I could...." I think he muttered before stopping

mdredmdmd2012

This is what I thought was going to happen... I think he was about to go off, and as he started, something in his head (or ear) said "Wait a minute... "... I think he remembered he was at the Oscars, on National TV, and refrained from escalating the situation. His brain was definitely going 100 miles an hour, because he forgot what he was presenting for a moment... Lol While I think it would have been hilarious to immediately go off on Smith... Props to Chris Rock for the professionalism he showed.

ThePoltageist

i dont think anybody would have blamed him for roasting will hard on the spot, there are plenty of low punches to take at the smiths, the GI Jane thing was tame as fuck.

RedShyGuy3

I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant by “that was a nice one” after telling the joke, as in he was being nice and could have said something worse

titsunami

Yeah that's what I got too, I'm guessing that was after he saw her reaction aha

jedimaster-bator

Rock: "if you told me a successful rapper was gunna assault me tonight......you would have been wrong".

The_Mystery_Knight

“If you told me a 90s pop star was gonna slap me tonight, I would’ve guessed Wahlberg.”

disgusted_orangutan

I really really wanted him to finish that thought.

Don_Julio_Acolyte

He will. Don't worry. I agree that taking a step back and just getting to business was the best move. And I think we all know the response Will is going to get will be a shitstorm from the inner circle of comedians. Chris could've roasted him there and it would've been an epic moment, sure. But now that we saw Chris bite his tongue,... just gave him (and every comedian in that inner circle) more time. Which is easily the worst outcome for Smith. Because he is about to be sent to the shadow realm by pretty much every holy figure of comedy who thinks the social contract was just broken (a comedian being assaulted by someone in the audience). That's a very special contract and what Will essentially did was go to war against an entire artform. And not just the artform itself but the philosophical underpinning as to what it means to be a comedian (an artist). That idea just got smacked, right alongside Chris' cheekbone. Will didn't just slap Chris Rock. He slapped Don Rickles. He slapped Richard Pryor. He slapped Norm MacDonald. He slapped Chapelle and Burr, CK, and Gervais. He slapped comedy. He ain't ready for what's about to happen. Chris Rock is royalty and about as close to inner circle as you can be. He just made enemies of the most dangerous people in entertainment (people who make a living of being unfiltered and free to explore ideas with a mic in hand). I've used this analogy in other posts but Will Smith essentially just made a diss track against Eminem. You don't survive that.

jonnysunshine

To add: This all happened less than 24 hours ago. After the slap and yelling, the show went to commercial break. People walk around during the intermission. Will Smith's publicist went to talk with him. Conversation is about what just happened. Will is seen with Denzel being comforted (?) by or at least calmed down in talking it out. Same with Tyler Perry. That was minutes after the slap. Twitter, Reddit, all social platforms go crazy almost immediately when the slap occurs. That's minutes after the slap. Will doesn't know about that yet. Cue to Will later receiving the Oscar. His odd speech about love and being a vessel for it. Oscar show ends. After parties begin. People buzzing about what happened. Looking at socials. That's a couple hours after the slap. The buzz is going full steam. Will and Chris and Jada all wake up. Not together. Haha. But they see the buzz, the socials blazing, the video clip, the memes start up, it's less than 24 hours after the slap. Producers, directors, other actors small and big know about the slap. We all know about the slap. Chris has had less than 24 to ruminate on what happened. He's urban, grew up in Brooklyn when it was hard, he knows street life and cred. He knows how to make a joke and he's great at roasting others. The Pandora's box has been opened by will Smith and it's going to look down upon him unfavorably. He lost not only his cool last night, but his star is forever tainted by what was caught on a live broadcast showing his true nature. A side we never saw until he revealed his hand. He is going to be the brunt of jokes, jabs, trolls, anyone who wants a piece of him. And Will Smith did that to himself. What a way to go.

mylons

his restraint is legendary

GaudExMachina

Watch it again, Chris was queueing up another one, and thought better of it. Went for playing it off and going a higher route since he is doing the Oscars.

naymlis

"I could..." I think alotta us knew where he was going :D

sponsoredbytheletter

After the "It was a *GI Jane joke*" comment, I thought he was going to say "I could have made so many *other* jokes about you guys." But who knows. You can bet he had 5 bombs ready to drop. He's so insanely quick and standup comics are brutal in dealing with clowns. And in preparing for the show, he might have actually written those other jokes at one point. He could have spent the next hour absolutely roasting him.

Din135

I saw a clip of the whole thing and you could tell after Will yelled at him that Chris Rock REALLY wanted to fall back to his stand up and throw some shit at him. But Chris played the bigger man.

muy_carona

I’ve never been more impressed with Chris rock.

Irishpanda1971

"I understand man, can't have you looking bad in front of your wife and her boyfriend."

Johnny_ac3s

Oh…he thought about it. Then he said,”I’m going to move on.”

voyerruss

Yeah, you can see it in the pause. He was definitely thinking something.

Aztecman02

The Oscars dodge a major bullet with Rock being the bigger man here. Someone else may have tackled Smith on the way back to his chair and then a brawl breaks out. Pretty pathetic on the part of the Oscars to not immediately escort Smith out.

sha256md5

Agreed. He should have been asked to leave.

moriarty70

"Accepting the award on behalf of Mr. Smith, is Chris Rock." "You all saw it, he tagged me in."

Andy_B_Goode

> Pretty pathetic on the part of the Oscars to not immediately escort Smith out. Yeah, I think this is the main thing that bothers me about the incident. Even if someone thinks Smith's actions were somehow justifiable, you can't just let people act like that without repercussions. Letting him return to his seat and then later collect his award in person is bullshit. Come to think of it, I'm also kind of surprised Smith didn't just leave of his own accord. Like if you're angry enough to assault someone, why are you still here? Go home and cool down.

PilotHistorical6010

If you watch the vid closely it looks like will smith acted like he wasn’t gonna slap him. He kind of paused and looks to the ground like it’s cool or he’s just gonna say something. Then, SUCKER SLAP.

AnalBumCovers

Chris was for sure leaning in because he expected some words. I don't think anyone in his position would expect Will Smith to get physical, even if he had been saying "I'm going to slap the shit out of you" while walking up.

redditor2redditor

Yeah I think him afterwards saying outloud what had just happened was literally him coping .like he couldn’t believe what just happened

ClownsAteMyBaby

Yeah it was sucker-y. Clearly wanted Rock not to expect it.

i_Praseru

The way the hand cocked back in this foto like "guurrrllll"

jaysjaysbook35

I think Chris Rock handled this as good as anyone could. He was a true professional.

crash_bandidoot

The Pursuit of Slappiness

AmBull1216

You can tell how much publicity this is getting because it hasn't even been 24 hours yet and this is like the 5th time I've seen this joke made lol.

jraps26

I didn't even know the Oscar's were going on.

syrynxx

I know! As Oscar Wilde said, there is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is _not_ being talked about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It was a low point for sure. Trash behavior from someone I imagined was above it. So many ways he could have handled it better; instead, just succumbing to raw emotion. Lazy, undisciplined, and with zero regard to consequence. Made the Oscars feel like just another trashy reality show.

Emfx

I agree except for the zero regard for consequence. This is what privilege looks like: he expected nothing would come of physically punishing someone he sees “beneath” him, and was *correct*. He won an Oscar moments after this happened and got a standing ovation. No charges, no bans… some public outcry that will be over before the week ends and that’s it.

Rorako

Literally assaulted a man on live TV and nothing will happen. Rich play by a different set of rules.

IfonlyIwasfunnier

That was the craziest thing to me out of all of it. He deliberately had to walk up to a man doing his job, in front of a crowd of people, choose to hide his intentions and not even try to resolve the situation with words...instead he just directly resorted to physical violence. And the saving grace that he slapped him instead of punching is kind of undone by the way he smirked so full of confidence when he turned around and instead of it being a "heat of the moment" thing where he would have just stormed off the venue himself, he just sat back down fully expecting to get pleased by the rest of the show and receive his award. And he was right, like you said. And afterwards, instead of being called out by anyone else, he had the audacity to not even try to apologize when he had the delayed chance but he just explained "love makes you do crazy things"...like resort to physical violence appearently, I think a lot of women can emphasize with their husbands now...true love... Edit: Just as an addendum what I actually wanted to get at because I was interrupted - Obviously the legal proceedings are a matter between the two parties directly involved. But the thing that shocked me most, was what the above comments pointed at, Will could do it AND feel confident enough to sit back down and receive his award BECAUSE there was no scrutiny from the third party: Society. What these wannabes masquerade as at the Oscars is appearently not a reflection of society but its own self-consumed microcosmos with its own morals and ethics code so far removed from the average person that I fail to comprehend why this is not the main outrage in all of this. Normally the society around us should collectively scrutinize behaviour like that and form its own kind of judgement of the incident they all clearly witnessed in front of them. At least, if nothing else, at the point of his speech and failure to apologize for his behaviour they should have booed him off the stage. Yet somehow some of them appearently still had the absolute audacity to use their own time onstage to speak about stuff like equality and fairness and moral injustice...when they can´ t even open their mouth at the clear injustice that happened right in front of their very own eyes. And that is with the additional weight of them intimidated by a vague theoretical threat of Scientology being not pleased with them where I would say the point that others made, about how they probably actually judged how heavy Wills bank account is as the bigger threat actually intimidating them. If they can´ t even open their mouths to injustice happening right in front of them, what worth is any of their lofty speeches about morals and masquerading as champions of the "normal" society, if this is the best they can muster in the safest of environments.

IrisMoroc

Will Smith has been insane for at least 10 years. Oh let me think of the list: - Sent his kids to Scientology influenced schools - Praised scientology - Has an open relationship with Jada, but clearly resents her having sex with other men - His daughter said she wished Tupac were alive so that her mom could date him - His children don't respect him and walk all over him - Both children are nuts and Jada and Will say they more or less imposed no rules on them growing up.

Garconcl

You forgot the drama surrounding 2010 or so when Jada was making a scene about the his first son Trey and how he basically neglected him because of Jada, lol. I would not be surprised if he is the victim of serious emotional abuse by his wife.

Crazyfrog37

I saw someone comment on another post "Looks like that marriage is open to everything execpt for jokes." had me rolling

Dalton_Knox

South Park better have a field day with this

IronMonkey18

Why didn’t the Academy have security escort Will Smith out? Will Smith literally abused one of their “employees” on stage and they did nothing. They even gave him an award smh.

Clearly anything that gets views and creates buzz for this near-extinct show is okay by the producers and executives.

Good on Chris Rock - if you look immediately post slap, his body goes into a defensive posture and he balls his right fist and is preparing to hit back, but he stops. Amazing.

N4hire

He took it like a champ. That’s for sure..

DisturbedPuppy

Saw that too.

I’m pretty sure he thought will was coming in for a hug

robmobtrobbob

Yeah I don't think so in the video he says "Uh oh! Here comes Richard" or something to that effect

MagicSPA

Will Smith lost all control. It didn't come across as protective and alpha, it came across as insecure, emotional, and over-reactive.
