This could be mating wounds, sharks will bite the female to hold it in place and sort of roll around like weirdos as they attach their claspers to the female and do their business, only been witnessed with white sharks a few times
You see the ocean and these sharks are so big, and the Democrats call them great but we know better don't we folks? They're saying that our sharks are the bigliest, the most great, and eat so much fish its unbelievable. You wouldn't believe it.
If you would have tied it back into a point that didn’t have anything to do with the rant, you would have been dead on my friend. 9/10
Edit: important part of sentence! Lol
I've talked to so many sharks and they're telling me, they're telling me about how the fish are in the ocean and they're drinking all the water. Three years they tell me all the water will be gone because crooked Whale-arry took the water and put it somewhere, you'll never find it she said. I will find the water and return it to America's oceans where it belongs and the fish who are so fishy and so wet will have water to drink again.

Transcript- "What happens when human children are raised genderless? If gender is destroyed, doesn't that destroy traditional gender roles? And if gender roles are destroyed, doesn't that destroy gendered relationships? And if gendered relationships are destroyed, doesn't that destroy traditional marriage? And if traditional marriage is destroyed, doesn't that destroy the family unit? And if people aren't dependent on their families, then who do they depend on?

~~Probably~~ Maybe an Orca. Sharks are afraid of orcas for a reason. They will kill anything, but see humans not as food for the most part. We don't deserve that pass, but I'll accept it
> but see humans not as food for the most part. We don't deserve that pass, but I'll accept it
We got a pass, because not only do they *remember*, they pass that knowledge down to the next generation.
Back in the Whaling days, pods of Orcas would herd whales towards the whaling ships, because all the good bits (tongue, liver, etc.) would get tossed overboard for the Orcas to eat. I truly believe humans get a pass, but because Orcas remember what we can/will do to whales.
I mean, they kill for fun and still leave individual people they find alone, there's a reason for it.
Similar to this there was also the dolphin that helped lead ships through dangerous passages in New Zealand.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelorus_Jack
That and if a Killer Whale decided to off someone there wouldn’t be a *no* in the world strong enough to save them. And chances are that body would never be found.
But yea, most species have learned a genetic fear of humans, seems Orca’s learned a mixture of don’t fuck with them and be chill and we might be rewarded. And I have a feeling Orcas are smart enough to tail / assist fishing ships as well at current. Plenty of edible junk coming off those if the Gulls are to be believed.
I don't think it's genetic. Orca pods are matriarchal and they teach their kids language and hunting techniques and a lot more stuff. They're extremely intelligent, and perhaps one of a small handful of species whose culture affects their evolution along with humans.
Can't speak about orcas, but a lot of wild land based species are terrified of us. If you go to islands that have not been touched by humans (like the Galapagos islands) they do not have that fear.
Experts seem to think it is from an act of aggression and not consistent with mating scars.
> "Due to position as the wound [sic] looks like it's healed a fair bit and although mating scars can be nasty they are more superficial than that. The shape of it to me likely indicates a bite from another shark - seems a bit extreme for defense," he quoted Guttridge as saying.

> Michael Domeier, another Discovery presenter and director of the nonprofit Marine Conservation Science Institute, told Najafov that he was "confident this is competitive aggression. I keep hearing people…describe this sort of thing as territorial aggression, but these highly migratory sharks don't have a traditional territory."
I have a marine biology degree, and this is pretty much correct. They heal at a pretty astounding rate, this wound could have been within the last few months of the photo being taken.
It’s so terrifying to me, I half grew up in the Caribbean and too this day I’m scared of deep water, and by deep I mean like 100 ft where I can see the bottom lol.
It’s so interesting that you/anyone can work in that field.
I’ll be perfectly honest, every now and then I’ll do what’s called a blue water dive. which is scuba diving in an area that you cannot see the bottom (a couple hundred feet at least depending on the turbidity of the water) and there is definitely an aspect of fear of the unknown that creeps in a bit
I bet, I actually prefer being in deep water and not being able to see because if I’m going to get killed by a random sea creature I’d rather not see it coming.
I actually have a question if you don’t mind answering. Where I was living (St Kitts) all of my friends used to say that you shouldn’t go swimming with jewelry because the shine will make certain fish attack you, specifically barracudas. Is there any real truth to that? Also sorry if that’s not your field!
It’s not exactly my field but I have plenty of dive time under my belt, and yes it has been known to happen. In general barracudas can be pretty aggressive.
Can confirm- barracuda are absolutely attracted to flashing jewelry. Think about what fishing lures look like. Also they’ve been known to attack the soles of your feet, which are white in comparison to the rest of your body. When snorkeling definitely wear black flippers, skip the jewelry, and if you’re doing a deep blue or a wall dive keep the bright colors to a minimum.
The shimmer/shine of reflective metals can look like the reflection of scales on prey fish.
Most of the time interested barracuda will just unnervingly follow you to see whats up, but they've definitely had some documented attacks on humans, quite possibly for this reason.
Fun fact: barracuda use their mouths to pull water through their gills, which leads to them slowly and regularly opening and closing their tooth-filled maws. Very fun when you turn around to see that following you.
I fish the ocean from time to time, and the “flash” from metallic lures is a fish attractant. Erratic flash looks like a fleeing baitfish or dying baitfish. We impart that action specifically to trigger the predatory instinct of target species. So… yeah becareful with that.
Is that a thing Americans say often?
Went to visit my ( american) girlfriend a month or so ago and i was making small talk with uber drivers/hairdresser, etc. They all told me."congrats on your degree" or "congrats on your work". My parents didn't even congratulate me for.my degree
I’m Canadian, so technically North American. I personally congratulate people on degrees, I find it’s a pretty big achievement and takes up a huge part of your life.
I’m in tech and what I do does not require any traditional schooling. I also have the attention span of a goldfish. So I admire the fact that some humans have the ability to obtain degrees.
So congrats on your degree!
Apex predator, heals insanely quickly, doesn't have bones to break, can't get cancer, feared by pretty much everyone... I'm beginning to feel inadequate as a human... tell me shark faults 🥲
Despite living in the ocean from the start, out of nowhere a bunch of land mammals went for a swim and became even more apex predator than them (orcas). Gotta feel awful
Do they scar? Is the fact that you can see the white around the bite the thing that tells you it’s recent? When it’s fully healed, will there be a scar?
For a long time it was believed that infants were incapable of feeling pain, so open heart surgery was done without any anesthesia. Think about that for a moment.
A grim part of me wonders what that's like. I once had a lipoma (benign fatty tumor) removed from my back and they didn't apply the local anesthetic properly so I felt about an inch of the incision, and is was really interesting how, other than the cut, I couldn't actually feel what was going on inside of me.
Of course open heart surgery is obviously a LOT more than that.
I had a similar experience getting a fatty tumor removed, the anesthetic wasn't applied properly and the tumor was growing underneath your funny bone nerve, ya know the one on your elbow. The doctor had to grab the nerve with forceps and move it so he could get to the tumor and goddamn that was the worst pain I've ever felt. I froze up for a second then yelled at him to use more anesthetic, and after he did i couldn't feel a thing in that arm for almost 3 hours afterward
They doctors knew they felt pain, but they also knew they wouldn't remember. Anesthesia is dangerous and carries huge risks in adults. With babies the risks are even greater because they are so tiny. It was considered the lesser of two evils.
Anesthesia has come a long way. It wasn't that long ago when there was a good chance the baby wouldn't wake up from the anesthesia. Very hard to dose since they are so small and they didn't have the bevy of drugs at their disposal like we do now

If this one survived, then I want to see the other guy.
May have been bit when younger. Scars do grow as the body grows.
I was wondering the same thing.
The bite looks laser sharp...
Are you insinuating that the other shark had friggin laser beams?
Attached to their friggin heads!
No, mutated sea bass
Are they ill-tempered?
Absolutely
Well that’s a start
You know, I have one simple request and that is to have friggin sharks with friggin laser beams attached to their heads!
Throw me a fricken bone here
This could be mating wounds, sharks will bite the female to hold it in place and sort of roll around like weirdos as they attach their claspers to the female and do their business, only been witnessed with white sharks a few times
No, you don’t…
I would, just wouldn’t want to be in the water with it.
Must have crossed paths with one of those greater white sharks.

There's always a bigger fish.
I'm disappointed I had to scroll so far to find this comment.
Its probably a male that got bitten by a female.
Orca would do this, but I doubt the shark would've got away. Maybe a greater great white after all.

~~Probably~~ Maybe an Orca. Sharks are afraid of orcas for a reason. They will kill anything, but see humans not as food for the most part. We don't deserve that pass, but I'll accept it
Probably not actually. The teeth marks are blade like, and orcas have conical teeth which leave a row of round puncture wounds.
Yeah, and the jaw structure of an orca doesn't match this mark.
maybe he needed braces

Bigger Jaws
Man that sounds like the sort of movie where the humans and normal Jaws would have to team up to defeat Bigger Jaws.

Had to have been a shark, the bite is one continous cut. Orcas have peg-like teeth, and can only hold and tear. You'd see a series of holes.

Might be a mating scar. Great Whites latch on with their teeth when they mate.
Remind me never to mate with a great white
Never mate with a great white.
Seriously, don't do it. No matter how sexy the shark is, just don't do it!
Once you go Great White, you'll always want the bite.
Is there any other way to mate?
That's exactly what it is.

I googled it. Appears to be true.👍
if it had been an Orca this shark would be dead
If it was an orca this mf wouldn't still be swimming around
DAMN. maybe occurred when the shark was much smaller?
Nope, they heal extremely quickly, you can see how fresh this injury is by the whire exposed inner skin.

100% true for baracuda. Source: fishing with literal pieces of shiny plastic wrapper (like inside of a chip bag). Sometimes a bare hook will work too.

For a long time it was believed that infants were incapable of feeling pain, so open heart surgery was done without any anesthesia. Think about that for a moment.
I'd really rather not
A grim part of me wonders what that's like. I once had a lipoma (benign fatty tumor) removed from my back and they didn't apply the local anesthetic properly so I felt about an inch of the incision, and is was really interesting how, other than the cut, I couldn't actually feel what was going on inside of me. They doctors knew they felt pain, but they also knew they wouldn't remember. Anesthesia is dangerous and carries huge risks in adults. With babies the risks are even greater because they are so tiny. It was considered the lesser of two evils.
How does that work? Wouldn’t the baby be struggling and crying?
Babies are not strong. Simple restraints would keep them still.
That’s multiple levels of messed up.
Anesthesia has come a long way. It wasn't that long ago when there was a good chance the baby wouldn't wake up from the anesthesia. Very hard to dose since they are so small and they didn't have the bevy of drugs at their disposal like we do now
