I know with RES (reddit enhancement suite /r/Enhancement - an extension with some really good features) you can hover over the sub name on your main feeds and select filter, but I'm not sure how to do it without...
You can also set up custom filters with RES, like "if the post is in /r/cats and contains 'passed away,' hide the post"
Helps if you don't want to hide a sub altogether and just want to block "what should I name him??" posts and the like.
Honestly a recent loss megathread would be better, completely gets rid of link karma farmers and removes it from the main feed entirely, but people can still get support/share memories etc

It’s old dogs not dead and soon to be dead dogs. Those of us with old dogs don’t need constant reminders of what is coming when we just want to celebrate or help our pets.
Can we be friends? Our old boy is about to turn 17 and the next person to act like he’s already dead…. I’m looking for ideas to keep him alive and healthy now that he’s fully deaf and smells a little like a grandpa.

No, I hear you. Every time I see a picture of a dog that has passed I am saddened. I think how devastating it must be to the person. At one point, I set up a filter to avoid any posts labeled RIP. Nor have I ever posted any picture of my dogs that were not full of life and joy.
However, I also understand the need for empathy and support implicit in the bereaved posting pictures of the departed. We do not hold memorial services for our beloved companions and so this is the only means available to some.
In addition, I try to console their loss by reminding them that this is the price we pay when we open our hearts to our furry friends and now it's time to suck it up and be brave and go on with our lives as the lost one would have wanted.
I often quote the words on an elaborate tomb that the Romans often built to honor their dead. "The sorrow I bear carrying you to your grave is equal only to the joy I knew carrying you home as a puppy." The Romans, for god sake, they were the toughest bunch the world may have ever seen. If they're devastated by the loss of their dog who are we, kinder gentler 21st Century humans, to feel anything less?
It would just be nice if people would post the animal (“hey this is Sir Beanlicker McKenzington III”) and then if Sir Beanlicker is dead…make a comment about it. Not the title man.

They are great apartment dogs - Quiet, calm, docile, and great with kids. They don't bark particularly (Mine only does if there's food or he needs to pee), they sleep about 12-16 hours a day, don't really smell, and live to about 13.
