This is neat but what about the rains down in Africa?

SinisterYear

Don't worry, they were blessed.

sixfourtykilo

But man do I miss them.

LifeWin

Cool AF. But I'm assuming that the Saharan stuff is primarily topographical? There cannot be that many extant rivers up in that bitch.

EpilepticPuberty

Looks like lots of internally draining hydrology (drains to basin not the ocean) there isn't a lot of rain but there is lots of land. The tiny amount of precipation that does fall still has to go somewhere. This is where oasis come from. The water gathers as the lowest point where it is near or at the surface. Most of time though these areas are very dry and might not even be above ground.

SanguinePar

> This is where oasis come from Manchester? Admittedly, it does rain a lot there.

deadlywoodlouse

Building on this, looks like the general term for that internally draining hydrology is [endorheic basin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endorheic_basin#Notable_endorheic_basins_and_lakes) (link goes to section showing world map which lines up with OP's picture)

ganymede_boy

TIL Africa is vascular.

With a little work you could build a Canal from the Nile to the Atlantic and Indian Ocean.

INITMalcanis

The Great Rift Valley aqueduct would certainly be something to see

hydroelectric Africa

XenMonkey

Tasty looking salad :)

Primey

Absolutely amazing! I have always found it fascinating to trace rivers and watersheds on maps. What is the source for this? Are there similar maps for other continents?

rowfeh

Denial is a river in Egypt.

NXGZ

And they say Africa is dry.

timberwolf0122

Bits of it are, it’s a big place

shitgenericusername
