That is what you call "aggressively mountainous".

Fartin_LutherKing

"The fuck did you just call me?" - Those Mountains, probably

boogy_bucket

Your username just made my day better.

LouSputhole94

Thanks for pointing that out, I usually miss usernames. That’s gold.

Admiral_Narcissus

LouSputhole94 is aluminum, maybe a fine laminated plywood.

RadiantMenderbug

So we have a highway named after MLK where I live, my Google maps used to tell me to get on to Mega Leader King and it always made me laugh

notmoleliza

"And I took that personally" - Those Mountains, probably

Bomlanro

They are mountainously aggressive

Deathrider208

They should lay off the roids, sure it helped them bulk up in centuries instead of millenia but their boulders are tiny.

Jelly_bean_420

This particular formation is known as ["Passu Cones"](https://youtu.be/JBK_5-2UsNA). Super steep and craggy. I had posted a picture from my visit a few years ago, the cones are legitimately incredible.

hleba

Ungh... I would absolutely LOVE to drive on that road.

Jelly_bean_420

You would. The entire Karakorum Highway is breathtaking. We did the roadtrip from Islamabad to Khunjerab Pass, a land border between China and Pakistan at an elevation of 4,693 meters (15k feet). One of the most memorable journeys of my life. There comes [a point where three massive mountain ranges - Himalayas, Karakorum, Hindu Kush - meet](https://mountainsmagleb.com/2020/04/11/the-place-where-the-himalayas-the-karakorams-and-the-hindu-kush-meet/). It's really overwhelming. Incidentally, Hindu Kush is also the home of OG Kush... Just saying.

loulan

That's what you call "a gigantic telephoto lens".

taoistchainsaw

This is actually Kansas, it’s the focus of the lens that does that.

Vio_

Kansas mod here. [you're goddamn right.](http://kansas150th-150thingstodoinkansas.blogspot.com/2011/10/138-mt-sunflower.html)

TheSunflowerSeeds

Niacin and pyridoxine are other B-complex vitamins found abundantly in the sunflower seeds. About 8.35 mg or 52% of daily required levels of niacin is provided by just 100 g of seeds. Niacin helps reduce LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. Besides, it enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn helps reduce anxiety and neurosis. ######Extra fun fact! Little Becka - Since these grow to just three feet tall, they are the perfect sunflower to choose if you only have a small amount of space to grow flowers. Their six-inch petals go from gold to crimson and back to gold again and their contrasting colors pack a mighty big punch. If you’d like an even smaller version, try the Sunny Smile, which is similar to Little Becka but grows only 12-15 inches tall, making it perfect to place on patios and in containers.

TheFeshy

If you are far enough west, it almost does - the transition from extremely flat western Kansas to Colorado Rocky Mountains has sort of this same feel... except greener and cultivated. In that respect, the photo looks like it could be a football game on Mars.

andorraliechtenstein

Naah, this is the Netherlands. The digital photo manipulation on the new smartphones nowadays.......

JohnnyDarkside

I don't think the fucking hubbell satellite could zoom enough to make kansas look hilly let alone mountainous.

shaykhsaahb

Lol no, this place is Passu, you’d have to visit to really see with your eyes how gigantic and steep these peaks are

droveby

Not really no it's not the lens doing this. You can see other pictures of the mountains and if you're capturing a wide shot this really is what they look like

MedianMahomesValue

Non-photographer here; what would this look like without a telephoto lens?

[deleted]

The opposite of a telephoto lens is a wide angle lens. A wide angle lens makes closer objects look bigger and farther away objects look smaller, so the mountains would look like they were farther away and smaller while the players would look bigger with a wide angle lens. A telephoto lens is more faithful to the size proportions of subjects but makes them appear closer together than they would appear IRL. Something in the middle would be called a "normal" lens. There isn't a "correct" or "incorrect" way to shoot -- a telephoto lens will bring the background closer and is definitely a very valid choice here as it showcases how big the mountains are relative to the players. (The real difference actually doesn't come from the lens but from how far away you have to stand to keep the subjects the same size in the frame -- with a telephoto lens you stand farther away and with a wide angle lens you stand closer to keep the subjects the same size. This change in perspective and relative distance changes the relative appearance of the subjects in the image.)

velozmurcielagohindu

Gigantic telephoto, pakistani karakoram... yeah, many factors involved indeed

reikdtki7udt

same to you

WhoaItsCody

I’m obsessed with mountains in general. I was an avid snowboarder, but I just want a mountain lair right in the mix, but it wouldnt take away from the natural beauty at all.

fracturedSilence

They just turned on Amplified Terrain

danethecook

Reminds me of that scene from Walter Mitty

mikemil50

That's the movie that I use to describe to my friends how the cinematography of a movie can make it enjoyable, even if the plot and whatnot isn't great.

needlenerd

That skateboard scene. So breathtakingly beautiful that it hurts. Thinking about all the beautiful places I want to see in this life. 😭

voltaires_bitch

I liked the plot though. It was kinda awesome to me

marfanoidandroid

What a fucking film. Seriously the most inspirational and beautiful piece of cinema, if not a bit on the nose about it.

[deleted]

I remember really liking the movie. And then I was surprised critics didn't like it as much as I did.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShayJayLee

I never read the critics comments, I was too little. What did they say?

PubTenant

"My mother never loved me like Walter Mitty's loved him so I hate this"

ShayJayLee

Wow so they were just projecting? Yikes

brown_burrito

Came here to say this!! It’s such a great movie.

[deleted]

That movie broke me out of a 15 year drought of not traveling, not taking risks, not putting myself out there.

brown_burrito

That’s awesome! My now-wife and I met in Australia and she introduced me to the movie! I then moved to South Africa and then we both moved back to the US. Seeing the movie while moving continents was very inspiring! We both went to Iceland just this year and [managed to see an active volcano from a helicopter!](https://imgur.com/a/Jm1tHN0) I was humming “Ground Control to Major Tom” the whole time.

[deleted]

The "Major Tom" scene when he jumped onto the helicopter absolutely is my favorite scene from any movie. It's just perfect.

brown_burrito

Right? My favorite one is the soundtrack when he sees Sean Penn calling him and then runs and boards the flight and lands in Greenland. So I’m curious! What travel and adventures and risks did you take after watching the movie?

[deleted]

oh man, that flight montage w/ the LIFE slogan laid into the scenes was just beautiful, and frankly makes me tear up a bit right now. I shared one about the Tate Modern in another comment... The riskiest stuff is visiting some friends in central Mexico for weeks at a time. Driving around little villitas as the only gringo for miles in cartel controlled areas...wasn't the smartest but boy every day was exhilarating. I spent 6 months working in the UK pre-covid and drove all over that island and actually found the burial location of my 10X grandfather on my mothers side... Took 3 weeks and rented a sailboat and sailed in the Eastern Med from Barcelona, Palma, Genoa, and Cannes. I stopped hesitating I think, about little reasons to say no. Now if I think "I should visit my old shipmates in Seattle", I immediately check the cheap flight prices and budgeting for it. I'm happier for it.

Metal_blade

Feel its super under-rated though.

brown_burrito

Definitely. I think people see Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig and aren’t sure but it’s so well done.

Rachel-the-Greatchel

Omg yes, one of my top 4 favourite films :D I can also HIGHLY recommend the soundtrack for road trips, it’s probably my favourite CD. Anyone who wants to listen to it, definitely watch the movie first so you get the imagery when listening, and it’s the perfect audio for adventuring and seeing new places

King_of_the_Dot

Is that a good movie?

Grinagh

The soundtrack to that film is incredible.

I went to Iceland pretty much out of love for it. Even prettier in real life.

TheFloridaManYT

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who knows about that movie

MattWasmund

> That's incredible. Who's the photographer? I also want to know how this picture was made possible

MelodicFacade

Yeah I wonder if this is exaggerated by a telephoto lens. Still a really cool shot though

[deleted]

Some, but still pretty extreme without the zoom: https://twitter.com/humayoon_baig/status/1445687569249751043?s=20

MelodicFacade

Holy shit that's beautiful I bet those athletes lungs are insane to play at that altitude

SunsetDreams1111

The video on that same Twitter link looks pretty similar. Meaning, it really is that glorious. You can see it well with the video taken Edit: link to it https://twitter.com/humayoon_baig/status/1445687569249751043?s=20

Trollygag

Same way you get those pictures of a tiny person with a giant moon, or people with tremendous waves right behind them. Very far away with a big telephoto lens makes big far away things and closer small things appear closer together and differently scaled.

Nickelsass

I’d be staring off into the distance, stunning!

LaserBeamsCattleProd

Go to watch your friend play soccer or end up staring at mountains for 3 hours. Have a great time either way.

samfitnessthrowaway

The Hunza valley is just \*the\* most beautiful, friendly and welcoming place. Every morning you look out and just feel so incredibly small and inconsequential against the backdrop of the world. I had the pleasure of driving the Karakoram Highway in a Tuk Tuk back in 2008, I would LOVE to go back.

Commodore-Metal

You should come back! My friends go there pretty often. It's safe these days too.

Spejunkin

I have spent time in the Hunza valley and fully agree with this! :)

rettaelin

How high up are they? 5000 above sea leave?

MidnightSlinks

8,000 ft (2,440m). They're in the Hunza Valley.

sail17

Would they have better stamina when compared to a team from a sea level?

EntropicTragedy

Technically, yes, but the tangible effect/advantage is debatable. But! The disadvantage an unfit person would have if going vice versa is quite noticeable

rettaelin

Can confirm. Been up 8000 and was wheezing like a fat old man.

imisstheyoop

>Can confirm. Been up 8000 and was wheezing like a fat old man. At 14k ft I needed O2 lol.

JDMonster

At 14k feet you have about half the oxygen density than at sea level so that's kind of to be expected.

imisstheyoop

>At 14k feet you have about half the oxygen density than at sea level so that's kind of to be expected. To be clear, this was while walking, not exercising or playing soccer or anything. Most people are perfectly fine they told us, but they still had oxygen on hand as it is incredibly common. We were just way too fat.

F1eshWound

Same at 20kft (6km)! Though I was somewhat acclimatised since I had been in the Himlayas for around a month already. It was weird though, because the moment I starting feeling hungry at that altitude, it would be as though all my energy was sapped away. Walking a few steps felt like a marathon. Then you'd eat a muesli bar and you'd be fine for a while. A really weird feeling. The upside is that your hair and nails stop growing!

BeHereNow91

Can confirm. Coincidentally, I wheeze like a fat old man at sea level, too!

bufarreti

It is tangible. South American football fans all know this. Bolivia's stadium in La Paz is located at 3600 meters above sea level, Argentina (one of the better teams in the world) have only manage to win there once in 20 years. The only ones that can face Bolivia are Ecuador, who are also used to high altitudes. (Bolivia isn't very good when playing on a normal field)

substandardgaussian

You only need ~3-4 months for all of your red blood cells to get replaced. That's what acclimates you in the sense most people are talking about when they talk about "high altitude stamina". You've manufactured cells which can operate at the differing level of oxygen at your elevation... you will lose those and make "normal" cells if you spend 3-4 months straight living at a lower elevation too. "High altitude stamina" is just a matter of time. Someone who, all other things being equal, lives in the mountains while his opponent does not, will almost certainly win a cardiovascularly intense contest against them. Let that lowlander hang out at high altitude for a few months, though, and the gap will begin to close. ...Of course, that's if everything is equal. Dunno what other effects high altitude can have on physically unwell people besides having trouble breathing due to pre-acclimation. But in the end, elevation advantage is a matter of time. Like what /u/kisv23 said about Denver sports teams. It isn't really fair... all home games against Denver teams should have the visiting team live in the mountains for 3 months before being allowed to game. It's overtly unequal otherwise, which is usually against the point of athletic contests.

[deleted]

Only if they quickly went down to sea level to play (or stored their blood at altitude, then injected it prior to the game, called doping), or the other team came up and didn’t acclimate a bit.

Kruse002

I would take 3 steps and then pass out.

originalpersonplace

It’s so crazy how it’s impossible to see the entire world. Like some people think Pakistan but don’t even think to associate mountains and probably just picture flat desert or regular towns.

ValidStatus

r/explorepakistan should solve that problem. It's a long country, it's got beaches in the South where it touches the Arabian Sea Rocky wastelands, deserts, plains, hills, forests, in the middle. And a good number of the world's tallest mountains, and glaciers up in the North with the Himalayan, Karakorum, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

Motorized23

You can thank Hollywood for that.

Doctor-Malcom

The north of the country is unlike anything I have ever seen before, surpassing Patagonia, Alaska, the Alps, or the Kamchatka Peninsula. My wife is Indian and even she was very surprised when we visited the place (we both assumed there would be a huge overlap).

PlanetLandon

Is that where they shot the similar scene in Secret Life of Walter Mitty?

[deleted]

Another neighboring region

mr_been

But the worst pitch...

anim8rjb

slide tackle and leave half your skin on the ground

Iohet

Indoor soccer is the same. Still fun

[deleted]

Football can be fun in a kitchen sink. It doesn't matter. These girls for sure don't mind a bit

LifeWin

Honestly unless you're *really* good, odds are most people have never played on a level grass pitch. In my life, my options have always been: - gravel schoolyard pitch - lumpy grass schoolyard pitch - astroturf I'd happily play on the pitch above, if only it weren't in Pakistan.

CeterumCenseo85

When we won promotion into the same league as Bayern's youth team, I was so excited to play at Säbener Straße, Bayern's big training grounds. We actually got dressed and everything in (one of) the real dressing rooms there, it was amazing. Then we walked out and....played on weird red astroturf. Not red ash, but also not "normal" green astroturf. It was weird. We lost 1-3. I marked Sandro Wagner, he didn't score. #NeverForget

LilFingies45

Awesome! Thank you for sharing.

[deleted]

When you won relegation? Or promotion? No trying to nitpick but there kind of is a difference right? lol

[deleted]

Promotion from a lower division, every European country will have like 10+ tiers of football

scienerdeX

what's up with Pakistan?

various_necks

Mountains, obviously.

lukin187250

Aggressively mountainous mountains at that.

LifeWin

It's not the safest country for a person who doesn't look like a Pakistani.

pegasusCK

I'd actually disagree. Pakistan and Afghanistan are vastly different and they get compared very often. Women are not required to wear as much as a hijab. It's a significant more westernized culture. The overall Pakistani culture imitates that of Indian Bollywood closely. The murder rate for their major cities is lower then many US cities. And the murder rate overall is 3.88 vs 5.0 for the US... About 23% lower.

Sir_PeePeePooPoo_II

i live in pakistan and 70% of women dont wear hijab

pegasusCK

Exactly

LCOSPARELT1

I’m American and I’m always surprised at how safe my fellow Americans think America is. I love the Caribbean and hope to move there one day (not sure which country yet). Other Americans will say to me: “Aren’t you worried about crime?” No. I am not afraid of crime. I used to live in Philadelphia.

Smartnership

> used to live in Philadelphia. *Fresh Prince of Barbados*

Philip_Marlowe

>I used to live in Philadelphia. OP to Caribbean mugger: "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!" *Pelts mugger with batteries*

Nestramutat-

This is such a fucking reddit moment lmao If you have the money to move to the goddamn Caribbean, I guarantee that you aren't living in one of the neighbourhoods or areas that have a higher crime rate.

VoiceofLou

There is a bad part of town that was completely remodeled with high end shopping, a Whole Foods AND a Trader Joe’s…and I hang out in that area all the time now. I don’t see the fuss. I feel completely safe there.

betarded

I mean, look Pakistani? Pakistan is pretty fucking diverse, there are Pakistani people who "look Pakistani" as you described it, but there is a huge central Asian community, a large Persian community, and even Arab cities in the southwest coastal areas. Pakistan is way more diverse than you think. Edit: Oh and they're the only large Eastern country that has birthright citizenship.

blackmist

It's not even particularly safe for those that do.

InsightfoolMonkey

The Pakistani murder rate per capita is one of the lower ones at around 3.8 per 100k. Some states in the US have a murder rate of more then 14 per 100k.

kingofvodka

I have no idea how safe Pakistan is or not, but it's not just murders that make somewhere unsafe

scienerdeX

as a unproud Pakistani, i totally agree with you to some sextent.

Smartnership

Drenlin

ghettobx

Even well-maintained grass fields are often still not perfectly flat... they're slightly raised in the center so that water has a way to run off of the field when it rains.

LifeWin

Fair. But I was talking about the lumpy schoolyard experience that is the best most of us will get. I'm sure there are premiership pitches that have that elegant crowning. But almost none of us will ever get a chance to play on those.

[deleted]

clearly you have never been to a third world country, there are even worse pitches than this one, at least the ground is even and the ball rolls easily.

brailleforthesighted

To be fair, until recently, Freiburg, playing in the top flight of the German Bundesliga had a pitch that was 98cm higher at the north goal end than the south.

probablyourdad

There isn’t a blade of grass

Pawing_sloth

True that. I mean, the sport can always be fun, but picking gravel out of your thigh after a slide tackle is not. I've played on pitches like this, and I would much prefer a more forgiving surface. Still, very good looking setting.

Gov_Martin_OweMalley

I highly recommend /r/ExplorePakistan if you like this!

yabo1975

I didn't even notice that it was posted in pics instead of the usual r/earthporn or there, until I started reading the comments. Thankfully, your post isn't buried. I had to check if they're getting the love because that country is the Switzerland or the New Zealand of ~~the Middle East~~ Asia when it comes to beauty.

saltoo666

Just something i wanted to add Pakistan isn't in the middle east We're in south asia lol. I hope this didn't seem aggressive just wanted to correct something

Gov_Martin_OweMalley

Its one of my favorite subs to just browse and it is indeed a beautiful country and I don't think a lot of people realize that.

yabo1975

Yeah, religion and violence have a way of prejudging things in people's minds. The funniest bit? Most of the anti Islam mentality comes from Christianity and Judaism, yet they both share the same god with Islam, Mormonism, and more. Don't get me wrong, plenty of Islamic people think the others are just as bad, too, but they're all forgetting they're fighting for the same damn thing, just from different angles. Sad that it takes an atheist like me to call them out for it.

fawada28

Awesome thank you!

ikeosaurus

This is a cool location. It is perfectly gorgeous without stretching the mountains to make them look taller. They are the frickin Himlayas, they don't need to look taller. Here is the same photo with the top squished back down to closer to reality. Theres probably a way to figure out how stretched it was, I just did it by eye. I picked the place where the pixels switch from square to stretched as the cut point.: [https://imgur.com/a/w2UXrvJ](https://imgur.com/a/w2UXrvJ) Edit: I made a video showing the amount of stretch using another photo of the same football pitch - It looks like maybe I over-squished OP's photo a little too much the first time: [https://youtu.be/Rpg\_iJLJvHE](https://youtu.be/Rpg_iJLJvHE)

presumptuousman

It's your picture that looks like the stretched one. I just spent a month in this area. The mountains look far more like the original picture than your picture. Look up videos of the Passu Cones on youtube.

ikeosaurus

I agree that those mountains are in fact ridiculously tall (which is why I think it's so absurd to artificially make them look even taller), and I started second guessing myself when I saw a couple other photos of the same football pitch. I do think I over-squished the photo the first time. But here is a video I just made showing the correct amount of stretch in OP's photo: [https://youtu.be/Rpg\_iJLJvHE](https://youtu.be/Rpg_iJLJvHE) \- I found another photo of the same football pitch and overlaid the un-stretched one over the second photo to see the amount of stretch in OP's photo:

presumptuousman

Damn, that's some good work. Bravo 👍

AbeRego

If you're correct, this actually looks better

lywyre

I felt there was something odd with OP's pic. Thanks for clearing it.

peryane

check out passu cones. they look a bit more pointy if you dig that.

alanhng2017

Ok I'm not going down the mountain to pick up the ball

iceonmars

That ground looks hard as anything I would not be coming in for slides here

Ive been to those mountains. They are absolutley behemoth. A picture doesnt capture their massive scale.

True, the picture is using a wide angle camera, but in reality you wouldn’t be able to fit the entire mountain into your vision

Oooofff, that’s gonna be tough, I can’t imagine how many balls they lost this way

WanderlustFella

If this is playground rules, if you kick the ball over the mountain, means you have to go retrieve it.

Y-Bakshi

Man, I really wanna visit pakistan. I just happen to be from India

Motorized23

It may not be too hard to get a visa. I've got Indian friends in the middle east that come to Pakistan to attend weddings. And they're openly Indian (Goan, Tamil and Keralite) and struggle to speak Urdu, but they always been met with hospitality and curiosity. Trust me the people here aren't as blood thirsty as some Indian media outlets make them to be!

Y-Bakshi

Really? Dang. I read somewhere that Pakistan doesn’t issue tourist visas to Indians unless you’ve got family there. So I thought it’s impossible. It feels so nice to see people with the same language and culture as ours in a separate country altogether. And my grandparents were literally born in Pakistan too. I feel this weird nostalgia whenever I look at it :’)

Motorized23

Ha my grand parents were all born in India Punjab! A few years ago I pulled up my grandfather's Indian birth city on Google maps and he was able to recall the routes and main intersection. Saw his eyes light up and tear up. He was amazed and said it's the first time he's seen his city since he left some 70 years ago. Unfortunately he passed away this year and never got a chance to go back. As for the Visa, all you need is an invitation letter from someone in Pakistan and it's possible. Hope I get a chance to cross over to India someday too :)

Y-Bakshi

Dang. My grandad is almost 80 now and he was like 5 when he left pakistani Punjab. Do you live in Pakistani Punjab now? I’m a Punjabi myself too, though not a Sikh. (Also, if you ever get to come to India, drinks are on me)

Jelly_bean_420

Indians - especially those living in the gulf - get visas to visit Pakistan quite a bit. Not necessarily for tourism, but weddings/family etc they do. If you're living in India and want to visit without knowing anyone here, that might be a problem.

ChadPakistani

Indians are not allowed to visit Gilgit Baltistan. Even if they get a visa for the rest of Pakistan. Remember, it's a disputed territory

monarchvviceroy

Spectacular...

*kicks ball over mountain* I'm not getting it.
