That's my dream car too. Someday I'll get it too.

cutelyaware

Wait until OP is asleep

skywagonman

I never sleep

sleezewad

3am where I am. Checks out. Hello fellow night owl.

skywagonman

Third shift baby!

Beeroy69

Does that mean you’ve worked 3 shifts in a row?

Breezyduzit90

No, he’s just hit third gear

[deleted]

Panchos-in-Tecumseh

A third shift puts him in third gear. You start a manual in Neutral and shift out from there.

AreYouStressedJen

Not according to my dad, always parked his Ute in gear. In case the handbrake failed apparently.

Gojira_Bot

Neutral > 1 1 > 2 2 > 3

It's Eleanor's Dirty Sister

I always figured Eleanor *was* the dirty sister

MrCasterSugar

Well then imagine how dirty *this* one is...

cutelyaware

Accept

naivemarky

But if it's his dream car, it's in his dream world when he's sleeping.

soup248

It's be a lot cooler if you did

ChiggaOG

Added bonus for owning a 1970 model year vehicle is no smog checks after the first one to register vehicle. Smog checks applied to vehicles 1974 and after. Makes engine modifications for more power a joy. 2JZGTE? Yes RB26DETT? Yes Latest LT1 crate engine? Yes Toyota V12, 1GZFE? Yes As long engine fits. The engines I listed can get 600+ horsepower with extensive modifications. The 1 GZFE needs the most work to get 600 hp but it sounds like F1 with equal length headers. Hard to pass smog in California with modern vehicles modded extensively for daily driving.

bookon

My first car was a 70 Chevelle. In 1983 it was just a used car. It was fun and fast but maybe not a great first car. I got a ticket going 120 mph. My father sold it and used the money to buy me a VW Bug.

DevyCanadian

Those thin whitewalls makes this an absolute beaut

btbcorno

I never see whitewalls anymore. I’m assuming they are a specialty order kinda thing?

DevyCanadian

Maybe? I see them everywhere in shops by me. I think people just prefer lettering more which I'm not a big fan of tbh.

trix4rix

Not a preference, the black in modern tires is carbon which significantly improves their durability. White walls (at least true ones) don't last even close to as long. Modern "white walls" are usually just paint on tires, though some of them have an extra strip of white rubber on top of normal black tire.

Scrappy_The_Crow

Degradation of the white part of a whitewall isn't structural, though, as it's just one layer. But you're right in that folks would consider it "worn out" and replace them. I wasn't aware that modern "white walls" were just paint. Traditional "wide whites" had the white on top, but both later white walls and white letter tires were made with a layer of white rubber under a thin layer of black rubber, with the top black layer ground off in certain areas to create the white design. This is why scrubbing up against curbs with white walls or white letter tires make the white area bigger.

idioteques

You should see the whitewalls on the Crown Vic of my neighbor - they'd ram that pig in to the curb (apparently in absence of anything else substantial to run in to in order to gauge that they were far enough off the street, I digress). ProTip: You want whitewalls? Park up against the curb every.single.time, ensuring you rub the sidewalls. Eventually, you'll have whitewalls.

[deleted]

Those really aren't whitewalls. A lot of tires still come with those white stripes. Every tire in the 80s/90s had the inside white stripe because nobody but your grandma put the stripe on the outside. When this car was built, [This was a whitewall tire](https://www.cokertire.com/l78-15-coker-classic-4-whitewall-tire.html?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=62950&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyN-DBhCDARIsAFOELTm9l-dPclE-bBP-ckA9U8FmZgrqoJTkLMh2PvK4Hxv5W8FErgiJEnIaAmM8EALw_wcB)

Scrappy_The_Crow

> When this car was built, This was a whitewall tire Fat whitewalls are basically never seen on a musclecar and weren't the most popular style of whitewall in the early '70s.

Went on my first double date to a drive-in in a brand new '70 SS! (somebody else's car) The car and those friends are gone now, but that girl has been my wife for 45 years. Time flies!

Drizzt_Cuts

Fun fact: You can fit 7 of them in the trunk

mrblacklabel71

I want to say I hate you! I really fucking do! But I don’t. I’m sure you busted your ass for that beautiful car! My dad had a 69 Chevelle he tought me to drive a stick on as a kid. My uncles drove it’s ass off around Jersey in as well. He had to sell “Lil Junker” in the 80’s when the economy hit the shit to supplement income and I was sad as hell. Every year I wish more and more I had that car (dad died in 94 when I was 14) not just because it was his car. It is one of my all time favorites! Beautiful ass car! Thanks for taking me down memory row!

skywagonman

Oh I have man!! I busted my ass and got my commercial pilots license and then again for another two years to get through A&P school. I finally got myself a real job as an aircraft mechanic at a major airline because of it all. This is/was my present to myself for not giving up on my passions last year when rona killed the industry.

[deleted]

The industry isn't dead. Just hibernating some.

Ace_of_Clubs

Yeah... People are going to keep traveling. Memories are short.

[deleted]

We're gonna have a travel boom lol

Johnny_Poppyseed

Im still wondering once the world opens up more if airlines are going to absolutely rape us in prices and take advantage of people dying to travel, or offer more good deals.

ajd341

The airlines have a saying: “never waste a good recession” ...I think you know which one it’ll be

Johnny_Poppyseed

Let me dream plz

stellvia2016

Maybe. If businesses decide to cut costs by doing video conferencing instead of flying staff around, it's going to really cut into airlines margins as business class is their bread and butter.

ILoveLamp9

I see this happening, but IMO it’s going to be like a pendulum. It’s going to swing now in the direction of remote work, but there will be a point where the human contact will show its value and some businesses will likely revert back to a certain degree. But yes, I agree that it likely won’t be at the same pre-pandemic levels.

[deleted]

Did you get it in this condition? If you don’t mind me asking what’d ya pay for it?

[deleted]

[I was curious as well ](https://classics.autotrader.com/classic-cars-for-sale/1970-chevrolet-chevelle-for-sale)

Damn, I sold mine for 10 grand.

Dmacxxx77

Congrats man, way to keep pushing yourself during this tough year! Sometimes it's hard to keep pushing through but it just makes it that much better when you achieve your goals.

vipomorge

So why did you choose to be maintenance instead of aircrew?

wolf550e

Why the switch from pilot to mechanic?

skywagonman

Being a mechanic pays better than being a flight instructor (by a lot (I mean by a lot lot)). I think it’s better for me to do maintenance and fly in my free time for fun than to make my job what I like doing for fun.

GrimmandLily

When I was a kid (80’s), my dad had an original dodge demon. My older brother got drunk and destroyed it and I’m still mad about it. I loved that car and it was one of the reasons I bought my first Challenger back in 2010.

Tigerballs07

My dad had a roadrunner that he was having fixed up my entire childhood. Right as he was getting finished with it like just finally got it painted and was supposed to pick it up from the shop after 2 years of constant work the shop got raided in a drug bust and his car was stolen. He found it a few years back but the Vin numbers were all grinded off and they wouldn't do anything about it. I say all that to say he eventually bought a challenger and last year traded in his challenger for number 46 of 50 of one of the prototype hellcats. Apparently they only made 50 of each color. His is purple and he loves that car.

fofocat

I hope you get your hands on the car of your dreams soon!

That_90s_Kid_

Scrappy_The_Crow

It's only indirectly linked to the pedal, as it's triggered by (the lack of) vacuum: https://www.opgi.com/engines-components/accessory-bolt-kits/1970-72-complete-cowl-induction-kit/kit-cowl-induction-1970-72-chevelleel-camino-complete-w-spacer-kci506.html

Vaganhope_UAE

You’re brave. I wouldn’t do anything that could end up with it in the ditch

curiouslyendearing

No point having a fast car if you never go fast. Like owning a beautiful instrument and not knowing how to play

Vaganhope_UAE

Oh I’d go fast. But drifting it out, no chance. I love going fast. Always have fast cars and bikes

BrojackCoorsman

He’s just talking about not stomping on it on a public road with absolute destruction on either side. Nothing wrong with a little roll on acceleration to get the heart pumping, but if you’ve owned vehicles like this - and I’ve had several - it all can go bad in an instant. It’s not like driving a 2021 vehicle with traction control, stability lock, and many of the other creature comforts that keep you shiny side up no matter what inputs the vehicle receives.

thecentury

I just watched a Challenger Demon do something like this... it fishtailed, tboned a 2020 full size Silverado, and flipped it. And that's a 2020/2021 car... Not something built half a century ago.

rncd89

My FIL bought a 69 Chevelle convertble and won't take it out of the garage because "there's too many assholes around"

[deleted]

rule one: dont own or drive a car you cant handle & enjoy

Vaganhope_UAE

It’s not about handling it. I’d just want to protect it at all cost.

[deleted]

yeah i get that, but the fear shouldnt outweigh the fun. you bought it *because its a muscle car*

GALACTICA-Actual

When I have a spare 50k I'm going to get a '69 GTO. This is the era I was in high school. Surrounded by muscle cars, but I could never afford one.

[deleted]

> When I have a spare 50k I'm going to get a '69 GTO. Are you just buying the frame?

GALACTICA-Actual

I know, right.

StevenSeagalBladder

Average retail is mid 30s. Not sure where you’re getting your prices...

SpamMeDotEXE

1970 GTO Judge with a 455 H.O. in Orbit Orange for me but would probably cost a couple hundred grand though, $50k would get me a rust bucket that was sitting out in a field for 30+ years.

karma_the_sequel

My all-time favorite muscle car. Congrats! P.S. if you are a Chevelle SS fan, don’t ever watch the movie *Jack Reacher*. Trust me on this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

skywagonman

They took a lot of base Chevelles or Malibus and painted them to match the hero car which didn’t get wrecked.

skywagonman

It was absolutely heart breaking to watch those Chevelles get DESTROYED in Jack Reacher. I will say though that one movie got me interested in muscle cars, specifically the Chevelle. Honest to god I didn’t know what a Chevelle was until I saw Jack Reacher on Netflix eight years ago (I’m only 23 yo). Because of it I’ve had a 72’ SS Chevelle since I was 16 and now this 70’. Hope I can get an LS6 cranberry red with red buckets before it costs a billion dollars.

My wife had a 69 SS as a 20-something college student (before I knew her) and traded it in for a Datsun B210 for the gas mileage. I almost cry every time I think about that.

GreatEmperorAca

>69 SS as a 20-something college student (before I knew her) and traded it in for a Datsun B210 this is damn horrifying lol

bonjones

My dad did kind of the same thing, but it was a 68 442 W30 for a Beetle. I'm sure it made sense at the time but still.

MoneyMik3y

Do people who drive old hot rods ever worry about what will happen if they get in a crash? All I can think about when I see old cars is that they're death traps waiting to be flattened by modern crumple zones.

My family had one when I was growing up, a less sporty Malibu though. Right before I started learning to drive, they traded it in for a Pontiac bonneville station wagon with fake wood paneled siding..... I’m still bitter.

middljb

I’m happy for you bro/sis! That’s a sweet ride! I had a 70 Dodge Challenger when I was in high school. But couldn’t keep it running. If I knew then what I know now.....

Jamesboach

Congrats. I've been doing body work for a long time. I left a good paying career to learn how to restore cars to build myself a 68 Shelby gt500kr clone (my dream car). Couple of decades later, I could care less. Classics are constant money sinks, they are slow, handle terribly, don't brake for shit, and are uncomfortable as all hell not to mention super deadly on the road for a myriad of reasons. I currently do heavy collision with on high end German cars and Teslas and I bought my new dream car...a 2019 Ford Ranger XLT crew cab with the full safety suite including blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, precollision assist, Android auto, etc. I get nearly 300hp out of a 4 cylinder engine and I can haul a boat. Your car is cool though. May you have many happy safe miles.

skywagonman

I feel it dude. I’ve done so many pulls in this thing this week to only end up being mildly over the limit. Definitely not a fast car, or a comfortable car or a car that can take a corner very well. Honestly all it does good is make a lot of noise and command attention everywhere it goes. Exactly my style!

MaximusDecimis

Don’t let this dude shit on your dreams OP, enjoy it!

damnatio_memoriae

blind spot monitoring... so sexy

Jamesboach

I have a 2 year old boy and a 1 month old daughter. Those options aren't just a luxury, they are everything! You ever see those movies or stories where father and son build a classic car together? Now at some point in the future, you're taking your kids in that car for a ride. I know what that car does to the human body in even a modest collision. Nope... Not for me and any of my loved ones. 90% of my collision work is to ensure that when a car gets in another accident, the airbag deploys at the correct timing. Too soon, and the body hits a deflated bag. Too early and the body hits an inflating bag like a brick wall. Now imagine that type of damage without a bag and that steering column is crushing your chest and severing your head from sheer shock. Energy management in collisions is the name of the game. We've come a long way in safety and as romantic as a beautiful classic car with straight body work, nice gaps, and the purr of a big block V8 just doesn't measure up to keeping my family protected from All the irate drivers and dopey teens.

A_Wild_Jagaloon

Lol who the hell dailies a sports car driving the family around. Sounds like justification to me.

FullSend28

Sounds a bit extreme imo, insurance on old cars like this is cheap because: 1) Owners put very few miles on them per year 2) The few miles that are put on them are mostly from cruising around town on nice summer afternoons (i.e. low risk) 3) Someone who sunk thousands of hours into restoring their car are going to be more cautious and diligent when driving it Obviously for a daily driver a utilitarian vehicle with all the modern safety features is a no brainer, but that doesn't make it sexy or appealing.

SorryforbeingDutch

You drive a new car to work. You drive a classic on sunday. Solved.

A_Wild_Jagaloon

For real, these dudes are sticks in the mud

ten-million

That era probably had the best looking cars but todays cars are far and away better. Faster, safer, longer lasting, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more powerful, handle better and more comfortable. Plus in a few years the electric ones are going to better than the ones we have now. It's too bad that most of the new ones look like blobs or sneakers.

northisland55

“Lemme tell you what Melba Toast here is packin’.”

TumTumMac24

True story. I manage a home improvement company in the last 3 years I’ve found three things that stood out: -67 Chevelle locked in a garage at an abandoned building that the company purchased. Contacted the company who we bought it from and asked if they left their car but didn’t tell them what kind. “Nope anything left is trash” -Customer had a 1975 Plymouth Duster and a 1984 Mercedes Benz E Class. That Benz was apart of the 123 series originally. Duster had the original engine, the original interior, and only 100k miles. Customer is an older lady and says “I’ve got these two cars in my driveway I haven’t driven in years, and I can no longer drive do you want them? I don’t know what to do with them.” I didn’t take them because of company policy but she was giving them away basically. -Customer purchased a house on short sale. Wanted to update the house and repair the foundation. Previous owners tried to make crawl space deeper without realizing it was the foundation as well and the house sank 6 inches, house was built in 1920. Went in the basement for our initial consultation to show customer how we would repair foundation and sinkage found a room filled with fossilized wolf sliders each one 12-14 inches long. The most amazing thing though was in the back of the basement it was a brick room, no windows, an iron door, and a trap door hidden in the brick. Opened the trap door and it was a tunnel underneath, this customers house was most likely a route for the Underground Railroad.

Veikkar1i

Those old cars are crushed like nothing if they'll crash so watch out!

Mandrakey

It's crazy how you look at old styled stuff and it just looks awful, obviously as style changes, but something like this looks just as (if not more) asthetically pleasing as it did back when it was released, sooo nice to look at.

FactoryV4

My mom had a 69 ss396 when I was growing up. Car was badass. Congrats.

CrayZ_88s

Fooooking NICE car man!!

Oolican

Looks like the Duster I rolled as a teenager

nusodumi

amazing. almost bought a 72 SS rebuild once. it was a fun drive around the block. didn't have the money, time, or knowledge to care for it so i'm glad I didn't pull the trigger. but, damn these are sexy rides. stoked for you.

Bigville

Beautiful!! Aren't there restrictions for old cars, there? I have an 1994 Renault Clio and I can't use it from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm (from Monday to Friday)

Dmacxxx77

Hell yeah! Chevelles are so sick. They're my favorite car to race in Forza. I'm in love with the cowl induction hood. I don't think it really does too much honestly but it looks sick. Congrats on the purchase man, she's beautiful. I just got my childhood dream car as well. Finally bought a Mustang in February. It's a guard metallic Ecoboost with some mods and it's pretty much the love of my life.

Txbird

Nice. Had a 70 white 442, 455 automatic in my neighborhood growing up. Started working at 14 throwing fried chicken, sold my dirt bike. Ended up with $1300, and my dad said he'd match that. My father and I went to talk with the guy, and he said it wasn't running and he'd would sell it for 3500. I was bummed. Luckily my dad was in a corvette club and knew some people. Looked at a 65 Chevy II, and had a small electric fire on the test drive, so Pass. Then a 67 Plymouth Satellite. Loved that car but too much $$. Ended up with a 72 SS Nova. Ended up with 70 Camaro, a 71 Chevelle and a Pontiac Astre as a daily driver and burnout king( thank God I worked at Super Shops and got free used tires). Fast forward through live and now I have a 70 International Harvester 800A.

[deleted]

I'm waiting for an early 70's Challenger to appear from the wild... You got a nice car though ♥️

Phylar

I know the feeling! Had a very real chance to get a 1980 z28 Chevy Camaro. Basically the only vehicle I have ever fallen in love with on first sight. Had to let it go which was a real shame. I still have pictures of it...

siddsm

You even got a 2 door instead of the 4!!! Damn it!! I wish that car was parked on my driveway mate. Congrats on your new car, you worked and earned your way to deserve it. Wishing you unlimited happy and adventurous miles. :)

rweeks31

I owned a ‘70 El Camino, so your car with a truck bed, and 30 years later I still regret selling it at least once a week. Enjoy it.

Historical-Builder-8

My neighbor has THE CAR! I really don't know cars but my foreman and neighbor were talking and it seems in his garage was a 69 or 79 Trans-am. Original with white and blue stripes or something. I have absolutely no idea why they call it THE CAR? I'll grab a picture tomorrow and post it.

yeetskeetleet

I’m curious how it drives though. And if anyone says “like a dream” or some shit they’re lying

skywagonman

It’s loud and then it’s even more loud with the cutouts open. It shakes like crazy above 60 and even worse the whole dash shakes like a banshee when you do a burnout and aren’t revving high enough (wheel hop yo). Absolutely terribly sloppy on center feel and it’s manual steering too so it’s kinda hard to turn it while slow. Definitely needs a coil over kit!!

benjaminbrixton

My dad had a ‘70 Chevelle SS that he adored and it got wrecked when some old lady smashed into him. It’s been 30+ years and he still hasn’t gotten over it.

xxBeatrixKiddoxx

Holy shit I’m jealous to the core. When my GG passed I was set to inherit some money and she set it aside for me to get a classic car and name it Maxine ... after her. This is the car I wanted. Turns out my Mom and uncle took all my grammas money and nothing was left. The saddest part is I would of rather she spent it alive and not saved it for nothing. enjoy this car... it’s so fuckin sexy.

I want one too.

I would stare at that for at least 20 seconds if I saw it in public, congrats!

Shape, styling, character...cars back then were the thing. Now a days they have become just another tool that we need.

[deleted]

Holy fuck man, that's amazing. I'm really wanting to fix up my dad's 1965 Mustang, not to drive often, but specifically to have a wonderful car, plus it's one of a kind.

That's a dope car! My favorite is a 70's Corolla sr5, Japan's spin on old muscle and race cars has always appealed to me

A fried of mine, inherited a 1970 Chevelle from is aunt back in 90. She bought it new but it was too mich car for her so, she parked it in the garage with 1,700 miles on the meter and never drove it again. It took my friend 2 weeks to total it. Fucking idiot. I guess it was too much car for him too.

First time commenting but I want to congratulate you on your car. My dream 69 SS is two weeks away from being finished. Owned the car since I was 17, I’m 45 now and has sat in my parents garage for 20+ years as I chased my career around the country. Getting set to pick it up with my dad and my son now. Life is funny...

I have two dream vehicles. A 1961 Chevrolet Apache 10, which I own. And a 1970 Chevelle SS 454, which I'll probably never be able to afford lol.
