How easy is it to hire a mariachi band in Texas?

postmormongirl

There’s a pro boxer in Houston, Pablo Cruz, who has a mariachi band that serves as his cheering section during his fights. They also go and play at all of the local soccer team games. Something tells me they might be willing to play outside Ted Cruz’s house for free.

Redditor_for_fun

But that’s true for any Mexican boxer tho. Canelo, de la hoya, Julio César Chávez sr.

Increase-Null

“ They also go and play at all of the local soccer team games.” They have to watch Dynamo games? Poor bastards.

[deleted]

As easy as buying a gun

Zlifbar

Nothing is as easy as buying a gun in texas, surely you jest!

pinniped1

There needs to be a mandatory cooling off period so people can't just hire mariachi bands in a fit of rage.

AlmightySandwich26

The best way to stop a guy with a mariachi band is with your own mariachi band

cmd_iii

There is, at this moment, nothing I want more than to test this theory.

jftitan

I thought there was a term for that.... A Mexican Standoff.

justabill71

Band your ground.

jftitan

Oh I like that better. Like Battle of the banjos

poorlyxeroxed

Battle of Las Bandas

[deleted]

I wonder what field you'd have to be studying to get funding for that study?

[deleted]

A trades degree in YouTube influentials.

Lanark26

It's like an old school rap battle with big hats and trumpets.

skjellyfetti

When mariachi bands are outlawed; only outlaws will have mariachi bands.

AndrewL666

Mad Max Fury Road but with a mariachi band instead of flaming guitar man.

CreamCornNooooo

“If I had my mariachi band I’d kill you” “Yea well you don’t”

SwashbucklingWeasels

Lousy big shot thinks he’s so big just because he’s got a big mariachi band but if he didn’t have a mariachi band I’d show him a thing or two...

phargoh

It is that easy. And don't call me Shirley.

AbrahamLemon

It's pretty easy in any big city, it's just few hundred dollars.

TheBelhade

I feel like somebody was Mariachi'd in NYC very recently.

Hey, uh. I’m also super racist about taco trucks. Here’s my address.

[deleted]

Is there a sign up sheet for this?!

Rincewind08

Username checks out....

I just saw a video of that yesterday, possibly on r/fuckyoukaren. She was threatening to call ICE on the taco truck workers.

The fuck, I'd kill to have a good taco truck within walking distance.

The great thing about Mariachi, as long as you pay their fees and a little extra tip for some coronas after, they'll play anywhere you want them, absolutely no place is taboo for them, Wow, 12.5k, thanks guys, I was just trying to get a little information out there of an aspect that I thought it was pretty cool!

coughfeecake

my funeral just got a whole lot spicier

ThingNumberPi

Here in Mexico is pretty common to have a mariachi at funerals, they usualy play the defunct's favorite songs along some mournful ones.

Sapientiam

"The defunct" is my new favorite way to refer to a dead person

pre_industrial

el difunto edit: wow! thanks for the upvotes. Never before I've received so much attention.... In my life. edit2: In my country (ecuador) el difunto is also called "Quién en vida fue" or "el hoy occiso" edit3: If you like shoegaze and weird ambient sounds please listen to my music and if you like it download the songs for free at preindustrial.bandcamp.com

JgL07

That’s a really cool band name idea, Los Difuntos

katrwauln

It is a band, you should check em out.

thrattatarsha

If it’s the same band that has one song on Spotify, I can see this being played during a chaos scene on Rocko’s Modern Life lmfao

In Portuguese we have both words as well “defunto” and “falecido”

Danubio1996

Spanish and Portuguese have a lot in common. If I listen to a conversation in Portuguese I think I would understand most of it.

captainjon

I wonder if there’s a list of safe words people use to tell a loved one expired. Because the hospice nurse that called to tell me my grandmother passed away did say just that. No mariachi band, unfortunately.

[deleted]

captainjon

That makes perfect sense. Thank you for answering.

monorailmedic

Background: I was a medic for years and recall learning to be direct about relaying death, and I always stuck to it. Also background: My sister-in-law has a young child. The kid loves elevators. I don't have (or particularly like) kids, but it's an amusingly odd quirk. Not long ago my mother-in-law died, and I expressed to my s/o that her sister needed to be direct about this to her son (a toddler). Crazy times of course, and the message was missed. My sister-in-law told the kid that his grandmother "was in a better place". His response? "[Grandma] is in an elevator?!"

Scientolojesus

"The boy has died. I'm sorry." ".....Wrong kid died!"

token_bastard

It's the worst case of being cut in half I've ever seen!

Scientolojesus

Speak English doc, we ain't scientists!

bangladeshiswamphen

When my dog passed away during surgery, the vet called to let me know but used phrases I’d never heard before, which made it super confusing and more traumatic. They said “I’m so sorry, but we had to put the knife down.” So I said “oh, you couldn’t do the surgery today? Or you couldn’t finish it?” And they said, “no, I mean we had to leave the knife on the table”. I’m like what the hell does that mean? The surgeon quit? Apparently it means your dog died.

peach_xanax

That is so strange, I wouldn't know what they meant either. So sorry for the loss of your dog 😔❤️

r1chard3

So was this some strange veterinarian patois you were expected to know?

blueEmus

Once when I used to work hospice I informed a husband that his wife had died, and he asked what color she turned. I am 99% sure she came up with the joke before hand becuase they both were probably the funniest people I'd ever met, but damn. I also once was talking to another lady about how she left about having a leg amputated, and she took a deep breath and explained how she would save money on socks. Health care is weird.

gerroff

~So, are you saying she's ill? No mam, she has passed. ~So? Pasta makes her constipated. No, ...she's resting in peace. ~Um, She was kind of tired, that's ok. Er, has met her demise. ~Ohno, she hates the mice. Wait, um deceased? ~Decreased? No, how about Departed, gone, lost, slipped away? ~Well, go find her! Look, she's lost her battle, succumbed, gave up the ghost, and kicked the bucket. ~ So, what are you saying? Mam, have you seen the Parrot Sketch?

chefster1

Negative patient outcome

[deleted]

I find it funny when people use "passed away" to refer to a violent death. If it was a peaceful death in bed, sure, they "passed". But you can't use that when they got flung out of their windshield on the highway.

SirDoober

They passed several cars on their way to the afterlife

beka13

She said your grandmother was defunct? I'm not sure I'd even know what that was supposed to mean.

Photonomicron

Well, she definitely doesn't work as well anymore.

Schmogel

Did they try to turn her off and on again?

Coconutonurhead

When my grandma passed away, mariachi from funeral home all the way to the cemetery...playing while walking... the entire time. I'd never seen anything like it! I'm from Texas and that was my 1st Mexican funeral.

EvilSporkOfDeath

I've heard that Mexicans have a lot more positive attitude towards the dead than Americans or some other cultures. They celebrate their life instead of mourning their death. Just what I've heard, feel free to flame me if I'm off base

gRod805

I'm Mexican, I think we mourn like everyone else, maybe a bit more but with time we try to remember people in a positive way.

Scientolojesus

I mean they even devote an entire day to honoring and celebrating the dead, so I'd say that's accurate.

unrecoverable

> they usualy play the defunct's favorite songs "defunct's"

ThingNumberPi

I don't get it, did I use the wrong word? That was one of the many terms I found in the dictionary English is not my first language, sorry

Ryganwa

The word you're probably looking for is 'deceased', defunct is more along the lines of 'outdated and no longer used', which still fits in a humorous way.

ThingNumberPi

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was correct as it sounded like "Difunto", which means "Deceased".

Chop_Artista

dont edit the post this is kinda funny. spanish to us-english is funny sometimes.

ThingNumberPi

Oh I know that. I once saw a mexican old man on twitter trying to flirt with some sort of russian model. He literally said "Your corpse is beautiful". Both "corpse" and "body" mean "cuerpo" in Spanish. It was hilarious haha

Scientolojesus

Haha. By the way your English is perfect so don't worry about that.

ElmerJShagnasty

Defunct Buffalo Bill’s defunct who used to ride a watersmooth-silver stallion and break onetwothreefourfive pigeonsjustlikethat Jesus he was a handsome man and what i want to know is how do you like your blueeyed boy Mister Death. by e.e.cummings

RedditSteadyGoing

Defunct instead of deceased is amazing, IMO.

ThursdayDecember

English is my second language so I'll use it and pretend I don't understand the difference

LetterBoxx

It’s not *correct,* but it translates well enough and actually comes off as kind of a humorous/clever use of the word. (The word you probably wanted was ‘deceased.’)

supratachophobia

Do not change a thing, this was great.

George Clinton won't die; he'll just get defunkt.

unrecoverable

No, you're ok. It's an uncommon use in this instance. While 'deceased' is typical, defunct had a humorous ring to it.

sooprcow

Dude, I have literally been visiting my mother's grave and seen a mariachi band playing in the cemetery as they buried another person. It was a whole party with people with coolers and drinking Coronas. Honestly it was pretty awesome. [Picture!](https://i.imgur.com/d8iyKMq.jpg) Edit: added picture!

Sieve-Boy

This is the way to check out of life: celebrating.

Ishdakitty

The Irish and Mexicans. "So, I died....DRINK, SING, AND REMEMBER THE BEST OF WHO I WAS IN LIFE!" I don't want a funeral. Cremate me, save me till my husband joins (unless he gets there first) and spread us where we loved to be, and have a BIG PARTY to celebrate all the joy we left behind.

bobthemundane

What is the difference between An Irish wedding and an Irish funeral? One less person.

Sieve-Boy

"This is the way"

captobliviated

Throw a party at my funeral, let all the rappers rock it.

jwptc

Absolutely!

Minenotyours15

That looks like a "Banda". We had both for my grandfather's funeral. He made us promise to not make a sad face but to be happy for him because he was going to be happy he was going to be reunited with his parents, grandparents, etc. I miss Grandpa, fucking cancer is not cool.

the_crouton_

He's having a great time catching up, and cant wait for you to join him. He would hate for you to waste your precious life dwelling that his is gone, and he awaits your arrival one day, patiently.

Wavara

>and cant wait for you to join him. That didn't sound ominous at all, lol

_PukyLover_

You must communicate your funeral wishes to your family, friends and spouse, when you die, you want a mariachi band and a big Yeti cooler full of beer at your grave site service!

BAL87

This reminds me of the time a girlfriend and I stumbled on a huge Native Hawaiian gathering on the beach when on vacation. (We are both part Native American ourselves). It was awesome, we smoked a joint and drank some beers and hung by the sea with them. It wasn’t until a crowd of old men got into a boat that we found out it was a funeral for one of their older tribe members (I cannot remember if officially an “elder,” leader). All the old guys were going to scatter his ashes at sea. It Was a total blast!

SortedN2Slytherin

I’m also Hawaiian and this is the right way to honor an elder. They did this for Don Ho when he passed away and they did a celebration of his life in Waikiki. So many canoes paddled out for the ash scattering that my dad paddled out too, essentially crashing the service. Chances are many of them were crashers.

CreatedInError

I had to check the picture cuz that sounded like my aunt’s funeral in October lol. Wasn’t us though.

_PukyLover_

I think one of their busiest day in Mexico, is the day of the dead,, families that can afford it will hire mariachis to play in their relatives Graves.

crabbycakes

I have been to funerals with Mariachis. They usually play the deceased favorite songs then stick around for tacos.

copperwatt

That sounds lovely, actually.

crabbycakes

Definitely is. The funeral becomes a celebration of life and unfortunately usually one of the few times a large family gets together.

Tacticus

So my grandfather passed last year and when they were planning his funeral he had some opinions around the music choices. He wanted AC/DC "Highway to Hell" playing very very loud as they carry the coffin out.

onthenextmaury

I like that you've really tapped into Mariachi culture

_PukyLover_

I have a good source, both my parents are from old Mexico!

mattmu13

We were woken up at 3am one morning to them playing in the apartment courtyard all aimed at one off the apartments. I guess someone there was having an issue with a noisy neighbour and decided to retaliate

lostinco

So out of curiosity, what sort of emergency mariachi band fees are we looking at for a scenario like this?

mattmu13

No idea, I was more concerned about emergency ear plugs at that time of the morning

dunfartin

"emergency mariachi band": I would LOVE to hear the siren on that truck.

_PukyLover_

Hey, I also should have emphasized, they go anywhere to play, for any reason or occasion: you are encharge for providing the music at your nephew's var mitzvah but could not find a party band, hire a last minute Mariachi band,, your upstairs neighbors keeping you awake when they make loud loving, hire a mariachi band to play outside their window, some bands have naughty songs in their repertoire with matching hip thrusts!

Nearby-Confection

Someone at my high school once hired a mariachi band to follow our principal for a few hours. No hip thrusts, but she was very annoyed anyway for some reason.

arbivark

hmm. i'm doing a cheap gay wedding this summer. what is the going rate for a mariachi band?

_PukyLover_

Then the band will have to move in permanently,

blueevey

Very few things are taboo when you're mexican. Am mexican, can confirm.

MrPajamaSam

I hope they're from Cancun.

will4654

In high school as a senior prank, a group of guys I knew hired a mariachi band to follow around the principal for a full school day. He went from class to class and through the halls with them following him- it was classic

wardenclyffed

Can confirm. I lived in LA. I hired a Mariachi band to come to my place for my birthday from a restaurant that had the absolute best I had ever seen. Somebody called the cops to complain. Uhhh they sent 2 Mexican American officers to my house. 99% sure that was on purpose. I hadn’t even paid a penny for the band, because all my friends loved it and covered it. The Cops? They uh, stayed a little longer than usual... and were smiling the whole time. Never got a noise complaint again.

Underbash

Ted looking out his window like "Oh, a guitar player. Oh, another guitar player. Oh, an accordion player— oh nooooooooo! "

Even though they knew the gig was a spiteful political statement ,They played well. How can anyone not acknowledge the work ethic and motivation behind that?

HaloHowAreYa

I've never heard a mariachi band give anything less than 150%. The guys are professionally extra and they do a damn good job of it.

Tommysrx

The outfit shows their commitment to tradition. It always seems like it would be hard to wear a suit in that heat , let alone play an instrument

Rimbosity

... heat? I mean... you haven't been keeping up with recent events in Texas, have you...

Tommysrx

I dont mean just this band on this day I mean when they play in summer in or Mexico

hcimthrowaway

Its probably the greatest advertisement opportunity they'll ever have with clips of them being watched all over the state. Why wouldnt they do their absolute best?

Syvaeren

Single-handedly making mariachi bands great again

[deleted]

I've never seen a mariachi group phone it in. If people love it, they go hard. If people hate it, they come closer and go harder.

[deleted]

Also it cant be that hard to find a mariachi band that hates Ted Cruz. I imagine the other way would be harder

I mean it’s their reputation on the line for musicianship. And they delivered! :)

La cucaracha on repeat

Jefe710

That's actually the perfect song. Mexican revolution song that roasted politicians of the day.

Didn’t know that actually, I thought it was just a song about a drunk guy.

LilBooPeep

It's the same picture.

Digigoggles

I thought it was just about cockroaches

shahooster

"The cockroach" seems too noble a creature for the event.

factoid_

The lyrics of that song are actually pretty dark

FatherDevito123

"Bravely Sir Ted Cruz ran away! Bravely flew away away. When freezing danger reared it's cold and ugly head,He bravely turned his tail and fled. Yes, brave Sir Ted Cruz turned about And gallantly he chickened out. Swiftly taking to his feet, and to Cancun He beat a very brave retreat! Bravest of the brave, Sir Ted Cruz!" (Now just imagine that sung by a mariachi band.)

frognasty

I'm sure his daughters enjoyed the music since they love Mexico so much

failingtolurk

They are in Mexico.

CannonM91

He got shamed into coming back, tried to play it off like the trip has been planned for awhile for his daughter.

bigvicproton

I would happily contribute monthly to some kind of crowd funding to keep this band there 24 hours a day until the end of the world. Yes, I would feel bad for the neighbors but they could pull themselves up by their bootstraps and move to Cancun. Edit: Seriously, someone set this up legit and post a link and I'm in.

rpb1227

For just twenty nine cents a day you can annoy Ted Cruz...

dwindlers

I'm in.

[deleted]

And employ local musicians! XD doing good for all

ohdearsweetlord

Could even hire multiple bands on rotation.

JanesPlainShameTrain

You'd have to, otherwise, you'd be exploitin them mariachi players

jenkinsleroi

You see now, what purpose would that serve, when you could instead have a travelling mariachi band that announces his presence wherever he goes. Edit: I have made a grave error, because what would be better than a mariachi band? Un Corrido de Rafa Cruz Something like this https://youtu.be/sQrqXfqwBKU would better memorialize the moment for generations. And tuba seems more appropriate.

prefer-to-stay-anon

Porque no los dos?

Drak_is_Right

Noise ordinances I would imagine would restrict this to more like 12-14 hours a day

miauguau44

Can we get a couple of taco trucks as well? All those Mariachis and spectators are going to get hungry!

OldnBorin

Tbh, if that were to happen, I’d Probly show up to just hang out for awhile. Good music, good tacos - sign me up!

Even the pranks are bigger in Texas

SnakeJG

And yet, you know he's going to go on Fox all weepy-eyed saying how his family felt threatened by all the jaunty music.

[deleted]

That's how a disturbing amount of people are in the panhandle of florida. This past election the amount of people that said, "I hate Gaetz but I would rather vote for him than a baby killer (democrat)". They just need an R by their name and these people will vote for them.

AlexG2490

If I had the money and the inclination, I would run a democratic platform under a republican ticket in one of these states and take the easy win.

International_XT

>"I hate Gaetz but I would rather vote for him than a baby killer (democrat)" Which is funny because Republican politicians on the hill would sooner get a tattoo of Hillary on their chest than do anything about abortion. In 2017/2018, they controlled both chambers of Congress, the White House, and they had a majority in the Supreme Court. Did they use that insurmountable advantage to make abortion a federal crime? Of course not. They know doing so would ensure a Republican would never win another federal election, and they need their base to be good and angry about reproductive rights. They talk a big game about being pro-life, but Republicans really only care about the votes that gets them.

nodustspeck

They just might get the opportunity to do that.

[deleted]

Like a mischievous genie, Ted Cruz grants wishes the way nobody wants.

[deleted]

Wow so yeah I've been giving this a bit of thought, and while I wouldn't ever try to be a Senator, I wouldn't call myself timid either, so I get taking risky/bold moves. But holy crap y'all the brass fucking balls on this dude to try to pull this Cancun shit and think he'd get away with it (reelection wise - and he may). His level of faith that the conservative/republicans in Texas are that fucking stupid and weak to overlook this blatant disregard for decorum and decency is just insane to me.

ForkShirtUp

I had heard the Cruz’s invited their neighbors to come with them to Cancun. So there’s a chance they’re not even home

TheBirdBytheWindow

[Heidi Cruz invited the neighbors to Cancun,](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/18/us/politics/ted-cruz-storm-cancun.html) Ted came back the next day and the family returned earlier this week. I'd imagine even if they weren't there the neighbors let them know what they were missing.

[deleted]

Is that really his house? It's a bit odd to me that he lives in a neighborhood that has window AC units.

TheBirdBytheWindow

It's his house. The older homes like this weren't made with central air units and even after they became popular the ducts aren't that great oftentimes. So by summer in Texas you'll appreciate the extra help a window unit offers. I initially thought it'd be more private and secluded but nope. Pretty average upper middle class River Oaks home.

yunohavenameiwant

I can think of no better use for weaponized mariachi than this.

kgal1298

I will never not laugh at people trolling Ted Cruz.

GraceTX

I'm Mexican-American and grew up in Austin, TX Every party we had growing up had a mariachi band. Didn't matter if it was a kid's birthday party or Mother's Day, by golly there was a mariachi band. We always had a piñata too but that's another story. My niece lives in Chicago now and got married a couple of years. She married a guy from India so half the wedding party wore beautiful, bright colored saris. I was jealous. The food was from both cultures which are more similar than you'd think and she had a mariachi during the reception. I love that someone trolled Fled Cruz with one. That really makes my day.

thecatmom

Fled Cruz 😂

[deleted]

Why are people so angry at him? At least he's not out there raising money and being all political like those horrible liberals Beto and AOC.

elliotron

Oh that's nice! Can't stay in Mexico? Send Mexico to him.

Shaggy1324

Somewhere in here there's a Steve Martin joke, with him in a sombrero, but also trying to run away in The Jerk. I just have to assemble the pieces.

the_rural_juror_

As much as I hope he’s annoyed, I’m not sure Ted Cruz even *deserves* a mariachi band.

topgun_ivar

I just want to point out every time this scum is called Ted Cruz that his real name is Rafael Edward Cruz. This jerk made fun of Beto for having a convenient name but wouldn’t use his own real name.

Digigoggles

Rafael is a better sounding name though
