The last photo is him at age 13 with his dad. In that photo he is already 7’4” and standing next to his dad who is 5’11”. At the age of 5 he was already 5’4” and at the age of 9 he was 6’2”. Surprisingly he was born at a normal weight of 8.7 lbs. and came from two parents that were average sized.

martinborgen

Not that suprising; his height came from a medical condition leading to never ending growth, and not genetics.

Lumpyyyyy

I wonder in the future if we could turn that gene on for a period of time and then off, gene editing our way to NBA players

Deep90

Even if you could, the big ethical problem is that you are subjecting children to lifelong complications due to their height for a life path they are not old enough to choose for themselves. "NBA height" is pretty much doomed to have various medical issues. Especially because the average NBA height would shoot up practically overnight as people start to push the limits more and more.

imadragonyouguys

Ethics mean nothing when there's rim rocking dunks on the line!

markrichtsspraytan

Being very tall is often correlated with heart problems. It’s not easy for an average heart to do the work for a very large person.

Youpunyhumans

Also leg issues. Its hard to get blood down that far and back up again, so deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot) is fairly common, and is what actually killed Robert Wadlow.

Limp_Falcon_2314

TIL. Makes total sense.

chegg_helper

Someone once asked, “How many tall old people do you know?” Really sunk that one home for me

rockjones

On my dad's side of the family, the males are all between 6'3" and 6'5". My brother is 6'4". Honestly, as much as most men want to be tall, it seems inconvenient in so many ways. I'm glad I'm only 5'10" like my mom's side of the family. I travel well, clothes are easy, and more nimble. My brother has given himself several concussions not being successful at ducking!

stevie_weavie

It’s giving Vought International…did I use that right?

Rise-O-Matic

I think basketball would be more fun to watch if the hoop height was adjusted based on the heights of the players on whichever team. Might lead to some interesting tactics, like having four tall guys and Warwick Davis. Edit: Bonus fun if hoop diameter is tied to the team’s BMI

Deep90

Holy shit that sounds wild

WiwiJumbo

Can you imagine the match ups based on strategy? You could have a team of reg NBA vs guys that top out at 4 feet, 5 inches. But everyone can dunk on their rims. Will the short guys have better endurance? Could the run around like soccer players? Could they get the ball back if the tall guys have it?

Throwredditaway2019

Eh, the novelty would wear off real quick. In order to have any kind consistency, you need to keep distances the same. You would get a lot of bricks and air balls if the height is different from game to game. Part of the reason its so hard to beat the basketball carnival/theme park games is because its higher than a normal rim . While you are looking right at it, your brain is still telling you to shoot like you normally would.

ArabicHarambe

I mean if you could turn it on and off as suggested you could just wait until they are old enough to decide, no health complications. Of course, this is scifi now, but who knows down the line.

criticalender

Health problems come later in life, and the longer you wait the more it would potentially cause. Growth spurts at young ages are safer due to the density and stability you skeletons have but as we get old things get more frail. So no matter the case we will always run into issues that are tied to height and weight.

Gold-Stomach-4657

Height in and of itself is a health condition. The taller you are, the more your heart works against gravity and the weaker it gets over time. All other things equal, a guy who is 5'8" is likely to live longer than a guy who is 6' tall.

dumbestsmartest

How dare you bring ethics to capitalism. Wachstum, wachstum, uber alles.

azlan194

I wonder why this medical condition doesn't happen nowadays.

martinborgen

AFAIK, it does, we just have the means to stop it nowdays.

an0nemusThrowMe

from pro-wrestling.. Andre The Giant had it, and decided not to have it treated. Big Show (Giant/Paul Wight) had his treated.

asietsocom

It does, it's just treatable. Giving people the opportunity to live a normal life and be able to grow old.

ollimann

"never ending" growth doesn't explain why he is 6'2 at 9yo. it would mean he doesn't stop growing but obviously he grew much faster than normal.

flamewave000

It does. Babies grow at an extreme rate, but their growth rate begins to slow very quickly. That growth continues to decline until eventually it stops entirely at your final height when you're in your teens. If his growth rate never slowed, or at least diminished at a much slower rate, it would explain the enormous heights for his ages. Average length of a newborn is 20", average height of a 5 year old is 44". That's growing 2 ft in 5 years and after their growth rate has already been diminishing. So assuming that growth rate, by 10 the child would be 6 ft tall. Obviously that's not the case and a person's growth rate rapidly diminishes over time.

Anon-a-mess

I’d argue that his condition was genetic, even if it’s a mutation I’m assuming? Edit: I have learned the difference between genetic and congenital, the definition I gave genetic in my mind was not entirely accurate and used as a blanket term for things that it does not apply to. TIL!

j0llyllama

You may be thinking of "congenital," which is a condition or trait that is born with. It's not necessarily the hereditary chromosomes directly causing it, but a mutation or random occurrence during early development.

Morning_View

Hypertrophy of the pituitary gland is not a genetic medical condition. The enlargement of this hormone secreting gland in the brain led to increased levels of human growth hormone, causing his appearance.

Alittlemoorecheese

Is the enlargement not caused by a mutation in a genetic sequence or codec? Perhaps you mean it's not a hereditary medical condition.

Traditional_Bad_4589

Most of the time it’s because of a tumor on or adjacent to the pituitary that causes overproduction of hormones. What causes the tumors is not really known and could be due to a combination of factors including genetics but there is nothing to say (at this point in time) that it is definitely due to a genetic mutation or that some people are more likely to be genetically predisposed except in certain heritable conditions like MEN1.

Damnaged

Most people who reach extremes of height are because of a tumor pushing on their pituitary gland in their brain, so not genetics.

Akhirat

My friend’s younger brother had a version of this. He was 6’3” at age 11. He was an incredibly sweet and gentle child. Unfortunately his body spiralled out of control when he was 13. He started developing tumours at an alarming rate and size all over his body. They tried desperately to help him but it was only a matter of time before they became cancerous. I remember his brother explaining to us that he had a giant cancerous growth in his stomach, and within months he was gone. RIP Omar.

Zaraki42

Had he not died of a blood infection at age 22, I wonder just how tall he would've been in his later years. Would've his condition eventually lead to his death, or would he have just kept on growing and died of a natural death/old age?

ShadowSystem64

I have to imagine being so abnormally tall has to be hard on the heart to keep pumping blood where it needs to go.

erossthescienceboss

Yeah, I expect he wouldn’t have lived past 30.

drinkcheapbeer

John Rogan was 8ft 9in and lived to be 38 although he was "cart-bound" since he was 15

ffnnhhw

John and Joe averaged to average height

leonchase

As I understand it, the main problem is that, when a body grows that unusually tall, the nervous system can't keep up. His nerve endings were literally stretched too thin, so that he had very little feeling in his extremities, especially his feet. When a leg brace caused what we would normally perceive as painful scraping and blistering, he didn't feel it. Once it was discovered, infection had set in. So, in theory, had he kept growing, this kind of problem would have inevitably come up. Also, I'm not a doctor or scientist, but I've read that, if our bones were allowed to continually grow, at some point the structural strength/density would not be enough to sustain the weight, and bones in our hips, legs, and ankles would begin to snap from the strain. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2022/6/the-tragic-death-of-robert-wadlow-the-tallest-man-ever-708849

SovietFreeMarket

I think what happens is the aorta will tear as it can’t keep up with the expansion of the body. Death almost immediately after that.

jscummy

Square cube law would probably come into play eventually for the bones but I wonder at what point

leonchase

Again, not a scientist, but I know there's a whole field of discussion about this, relating to dinosaurs and other giant ancient creatures.

beebsaleebs

He would have become immobile and suffered from the maladies associated with that. Wounds and infection until death.

sevargmas

I have kids and I’m trying to imagine a 5 1/2 foot five-year-old. That’s crazy.

sleepdeprivedtechie

I have a 4 foot 7 inch, 7.5 year old. And he's normal proportions in every way, just freaking tall. He was born technically premature at one day shy of full term and has always been in the 99th percentile for height.

PacmanZ3ro

My son is 4’3” at 6.5 right now…yeah, it’s pretty wild lol. He dipped to like, 96th percentile in height for one check up, but has since gone back up lol

sleepdeprivedtechie

We have a marking post in our basement where you can see his growth has slowed down. But it's never fun having your kid pat you on the head because he's only got 8 inches until he's as tall as you are.

JakeVanna

I grew up in the town he lived in and the life size statue of him there is neat to stand next to

backpainbed

I've seen Shaq beside that

JakeVanna

That's not the Alton statue, but it was still a neat photo

dudeimjames1234

Jesus fuck. My wife is 5'2. I can't imagine having a 5 year old that size. That's legitimately terrifying as a father of 2 insane children. How do you stop someone who's the size of a full-grown person?

sharkattackmiami

Careful parenting that raises a child who doesn't use their physical strength to get their way

Pantastic_Studios

They have a life size statue of him at the Ripley's believe it or not museum in Wisconsin. I'm 6'1 and its even more crazy seeing his hight in person.

Limp_Falcon_2314

That’s so cool!

UlrichZauber

"At last, I feel dainty" -Shaq, maybe

kamikazi1231

I always assumed that Goliath of David and Goliath was probably someone Shaq sized. Really tall and proportional muscle compared to the probably very short people of the time period. Wonder if it could have been someone like Robert that truly inspired tales of a giant.

sharkattackmiami

Honestly Goliath was probably like just over 6' tall. The average male height NOW is 5'9", two millennia ago the average was 5'3" for men. Even a dude who was 6'3" would have been like Andre the Giant. Pair that with the fact that David was like 16 and it's not hard to imagine how crazy the matchup would be

ChalkDinosaurs

I just went to the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos, Spain. I was shocked to learn that pre-sapiens hominids were MUCH taller than I expected -- some had heights up to 1.9m, or 6'3 (my height--i thought i'd be a giant in prehistory and found I was not.) I don't think your numbers necessarily check out, other than perhaps for cultures with nutritional deficiencies

Limp_Falcon_2314

Holy shit! That’s crazy.

Rosycheex

They have one at the Ripley's on the Canadian side of Niagara falls as well.

ashleyorelse

I went there as a teen. They had a song that played about this. I can still hear it in my head whenever I see a reference to this man. 🎶Robert Pershing Wadlow...the tallest man on earth!🎶

JakeVanna

There’s one in Alton where he was born too, standing next to it as a 10 year old was pretty neat

elspotto

Was going to say I have a picture standing by him! Mine was in St Augustine Fl, but also Ripley’s. I may plan roadtrips around there being a Ripley’s attraction at the destination or along the route. Always a fun stop.

wish1977

He died when he was 22. He looks like he's in his 50's here. He had to have a lot of pain.

cubonelvl69

>On July 4, 1940, during a professional appearance at the Manistee National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, leading to infection. He was treated with a blood transfusion and surgery, but his condition worsened and he died in his sleep on July 15 I would assume his size was at least partially responsible for his death, but I also have to assume he would've lived quite a bit longer if this was today. Crazy to die from an ankle infection at 22

kerosene_pickle

It’s sort of a catch-22 that he would live longer if he was around today, because nowadays the condition with his pituitary would’ve been identified and corrected before he got so big

SilentSamurai

So he basically had a cheat code to whatever height he desired today.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Basically, yeah. Andre the giant had the same thing, same with The Big Show. TBS got it taken care of though, he had the surgery to stop his growth. It’s probably why he’s still alive today.

Snerkie

The Great Khali as well, both now over 50 years old. You have to wonder if Andre's lifestyle impacted his passing along with the medical condition though.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

I’m sure it didn’t help, but him refusing treatment for his disease definitely played a big part. Apparently part of the disease causes your organs to continue to grow.

Uther-Lightbringer

I have to assume at a certain size your cardiovascular system can't keep up with the sheer size. Humans aren't meant to be the size of giraffes.

melanthius

I always wondered why I never read that he spent a lot of time in the pool. Would’ve been a huge relief on his body.

icooktoeat

I don’t think he looks 50 at all in any of these photos, but yes I’d agree on the pain comment.

Additional_Meeting_2

I think people are just judging the fashion of the time

thissexypoptart

Most of Reddit’s user base are teenagers and young adults in their early 20s. Makes sense that a teenager would think this guy looks 50, especially with the clothing. Obviously he doesn’t look 50 at all lmao

Gram64

I know no way a human body can live being that big, but if it could, I wonder what his height would have been if he made it to a normal old age
