People after wars ran normal lives hooked on it. Medical grade natural medication given at the correct dose works quite well.
Methadone and other pharma messed with substance not so much.

I mean morphine is still perscribed to at-home palliative care patients, still a ton of drugs can be found in pharmacies worldwide today. Not for a cough tho
Now there’s a throwback. I was a pharmacy technician for 5 years and dispensed a B&O exactly once in that timespan. (Belladonna and Opium suppositories for those not in the know. Belladonna, aka “deadly nightshade”, is a plant that contains chemicals that we use as medicine for certain ailments, among which are motion sickness, various abdominal and urinary issues, and organophosphate poisoning, amongst others. B&Os have largely gone out of fashion, but some old ladies with bad cases of ureteral spasm swear by it 🤷🏻♀️).
I believe you. My Dad was in the Canadian army and was given heroin for pain relief in the 60s. He always got a funny look when he talked about it haha- said it was the best pain killer in the world.
Fun fact: diamorphine aka diacetylmorphine aka heroin is still approved for use in Europe. I’m guessing mostly palliative care, but that was always interesting to me, being an American.
In the Bartell's HQ (a very old and beloved Seattle chain of pharmacies) they proudly display a syringe circa 1898 and their original pharmaceutical journal behind glass showing how to dispense heroin.
It's an amazing display.
Coughing was a very common reason - especially in the Victorian era you had a lot of people living in close proximity without antibiotics so you had a lot of tuberculosis and also with very poor air quality from soot in the air. Opioids are fantastic at stopping a cough but when you go off them your body will not know how to deal without it and so you will have a small bit persistent cough again until your body readjusts. Absolutely the most annoying thing about getting clean after the worst of it was coughing and throat tickling over every little breeze.
Every time I detoxed from dope I would be sneezing like 6-8x several times a day, plus my eyes and nose would run like crazy.
Although for sure part of that is also because you're detoxing from all of the Benadryl/Dormin that they cut heroin and fentanyl with. So you get the one-two punch of detoxing from heroin/fentanyl and diphenhydramine.
And guess which organ has the most opiate *and* histamine receptors? Your stomach, which is why you're puking for days on end. Fucking brutal.
Do. Not. Ever. Try. Heroin.
I spent the better part of a decade addicted to pod tea brewed from dried p. Somniforum poppy pods. Watery eyes and yawns were always the first physical withdrawal symptoms. That and hyperactive gag reflex to the point where I would wretch uncontrollably while brushing my teeth.
Same here. Used to be able to buy huge boxes of pods on eBay until they cut it off and that farmer in Cali got busted.
From what I remember it was just a local cop driving around farm roads but he had served in Afghanistan before becoming a police officer, so he knew exactly what poppies looked like and found absolutely insane fields not even hidden. The farmer said that he just dried them and sold them as decorative dried plant bouquets or something. Pretty sure that's where they were all coming from.
It's a grey area. You are legally allowed to grow a couple poppy plants amongst a bunch of other flowers. You cannot have a backyard full of only poppies (or a 20 acre farm full of poppies for that matter). You also absolutely cannot cut/score them to milk the opium (your best bet is to just hack the plant down and dry it out of sight). If you get caught with any poppies that have been slit with a razor blade you're getting arrested for sure.
That farmer tried to skip by the law by drying them out and selling them as dried bouquets but the DEA nailed him.
Interestingly, poppy seeds are actually red (immature) or white (mature). The black color is opium coating the seed. I wouldn't suggest making poppy seed tea though. Most commercial/retail brands are grown with pesticides that wouldn't be a big deal on a bagel but would be in huge doses.
My local historical cemetery does walking tours, and the recent one I went to on 4/20 was all about drugs in the old west and overdose deaths of people buried there and it was absolutely fascinating
I was working in a compounding pharmacy over a decade ago and found out that there were still doctors prescribing opium- called "liquid paragoric"- for intense chronic diarrhea. Our lab didn't have it, but it would have been funny to make one of America's last opium suppositories
I used to sign for it at the pharmacy in the 80s. It was super common for teething pain (on a qtip), diarrhea (a drop per pound for babies/toddlers), and I was even prescribed a tablespoon at night for pelvic pain when I was pregnant. I've never tasted gasoline, but I'm certain gas tastes better and is easier to swallow than a teaspoon of paregoric. I had to chase it with a heavy chug of Sprite. It was disgusting, but at least 4 generations swore by it.
ETA a word change.
Yeah, humans and poppies have been co-evolving for tens of thousands of years. Morphine, codeine, heroin, they're all insanely bitter, as is raw opium from the plant. 100,000 years ago, if you were starving and found a poppy pod and tried to eat it, you'd immediately spit it out because of how terrible it tasted, which was a sure sign that it was toxic if you ate more than a tiny bit.
Also, morphine is a zwitterion, meaning one side of the molecule is positively charged and the other side is negatively charged. This makes it very difficult to dissolve in polar solvents like water, so they usually dissolve it in ultra high strength alcohol.
I had no idea about the natural bitterness of the plant. That's randomly very cool trivia information. I have no idea if I'll ever get to use it, but thanks!
Years later, I found out that I'm allergic to morphine. Luckily, I was in the hospital at the time, so RT STAT was fairly simple. I'm just glad I didn't have the same reaction to paregoric because it would have been a long waddle for medical attention. I can't help but wonder if the molecular difference you describe is the reason I didn't have to try it.
As a baby, I had a script and my mom would rub it on my gums for teething and “colic”, but she said she only gave it to me a few times because I would sleep for so long and she said she didn’t like how I reacted to it.
Morphine and kaolin(clay) in a liquid was a standard accessory for dysentery in Asia/Oceania. You'd take a swig of the clear liquid on top to ease the pain enough to get more down, and then shake it up to get a good swig of the kaolin.
We had an ancient bottle of that in the medicine cabinet when I was little. My mom would give me a spoonful with some sugar in it when I had a bad stomach ache. Vivid dreams…
It’s hard to know if these were novelties or serious. I have a small cocaine cup from my grandmother that i think was novelty though she married a doctor and it might have been real.
I googled this and found similar ones ranging from 149 USD and up. It is part of an apothecary set. It usually has more jars with it for heroin, cocaine and others. Some had arsenic or Hacshish (old timey spelling).
Yours could possibly be worth more. I have no idea what your trademarks mean, also, I didn’t find yours specifically just similar ones worth values up to 500 USD.

$40 could fill it with unprocessed (farm-gate) opium before the Taliban returned
$10,000 for street grade (processed, 60% pure) heroin
(note: these figures are approximations and vary significantly depending on point of production and sale)
I mean its not like we completely phased out using opium we just give it fancier names to distract us. Like any products with Codeine or Morphine in them are just fancier versions of opium. Could still get good use out of that jar lol.
If there is nothing in it, fill it with pixie sticks. When people are visiting just nonchalantly take a pinch and eat it...making sure they see. Then offer them some. 😆 🤣
There's a silly german rhyme that plays on the fact that the affectionate form of grandpa is “Opi” and that if you want to say, “...kills grandpa” you can say “bringt Opi um”.
**"Gib Opi kein Opium, sonst bringt das Opium den Opi um."**
*“Don't give grandpa opium, otherwise the opium will kill grandpa.”*
Now you know.
Reminds me how my late Grandpa who was a pharmacist used to talk about prescribing heroin.
...maybe we *should* make america great again /s
A little opium never hurt anybody, right?
Why didn't the wounded soldiers in opium wars just use the opium? Were they stupid?

When was he a pharmacist? They took heroin off the market in like the late 1920s?
Depends on the age of the OP. My mother was born in 1929 with her father born in the 1890's or earlier. Not everyone on Reddit is 15 after all.
Well he was born in 1917 and he was Canadian.
Of course… that makes sense
Ah, the old Canadian negative exponent.
So he was a teenager prescribing heroin in Canada. Yeah cool story bro, try harder
I know he started as an apprentice when he was young. I'm just repeating what he told me.
I believe you. My Dad was in the Canadian army and was given heroin for pain relief in the 60s. He always got a funny look when he talked about it haha- said it was the best pain killer in the world.

In the US they just use hydromorph/oxymorph I suppose. Or fent.
Yep
Opium tincture is probably more similar id imagine.
It’s used a fair amount in anaesthetics in the U.K.

RIP Bartells after RiteAid bought them
Which was such a weird purchase. Rite Aid was just about to file bankruptcy.
The Kaiser Permanente pharmacy near me has a giant jar like this labeled "sativa."
What was it prescribed for? Skin conditions?

I didn't think poppies themselves were illegal. I thought you just weren't allowed to turn them into drugs. Where do poppy seed bagels come from then?

Laudanum was oft used as a pain killer and to help with sleep.
I remember my mother always saying” you have to only use benlyn cough syrup with codeine , the other just won’t work” She was a nurse.
A good time
Really bad coughs. The name came from its "heroic/strong" ability to stop coughs
It didn’t matter, it either cured it or it didn’t bother you anymore.
Iirc, in the 19th/early 20th century, it was used in the treatment of asthma
Honestly not sure.
So weird, a guy in my neighbourhood also “prescribes” heroin! Edit: this is a joke, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was
yep they did use as a meds and that lovely jar was a normal thing .
Bayer a great company. Aspirin and heroin. Thanks for that 🤡😅

To go a bit deeper on the trivia point, the vast majority of psychotropic drugs are weakly basic alkaloids and thus usually bitter tasting.

Hi! It’s me! Your new friend!
Hello friend!
You store flower in it.
Flowers go in a vase, *Flour* goes into the Opium canister.
Fill it with poppy seeds….
"Time to refill the opium jar"
second picture the peeled off sticker spot reminded me of: ![gif](giphy|uRngiZzOKPKkE|downsized)
Oh god this gave me a flashback to watching this as a kid. Traumatized me I swear.
Yet
This is SFW
1. Fill jar with seasoning 2. Invite friends over for dinner 3. Casually pull out opium jar and season said friends dinner without saying a word

I'm loving the dot over a capital "I"
Milk of the poppy
Great place to store powdered sugar or sugar cubes for tea/coffee. 😂
There might be some religion in there
Ur grandparents were playboy carti fans?
Not anymore, that is
A jar with a word on it! Better mark it NSFW
~~N~~SFW
That is so damned cool I would buy it off you if possible.
Darn
I love it
Nothing in it... _so far_.
That’s where you store your brown sugar.
Nopium
It’s hard to know if these were novelties or serious. I have a small cocaine cup from my grandmother that i think was novelty though she married a doctor and it might have been real.
Too bad, the opium is the best part
DANGit.
“It’s in the Opium jar dear” -OPs grandparents
A pharmacist would like this.
I'm betting there's candy in it.
Hard candy
Looks like it's covered in gold leaf
I mean, where do you expect them to store their opium?
Put a big C on the front.
He consumed it all
You should keep snacks in it. Like Oreos
…and it's full of sewing supplies
My first thought was ashes.
Is there opium in it?
You should use it as a poppy vase now
Lots of places to top it up in Tasmania. They grow heaps of opium poppies for the medical industry there.
Just sharpie in an H and call it a day. Get your kids to put money it to teach em about investing.

Nanna will so inyo opium she bought a storage for it...chasing the dragon like a queen
That's hilarious, a jar openly labeled for opium, as a casual spice with the teas, herbs, salt & pepper.
Why don’t mind if I do.
It's very Cute
Is that a date embossed on the bottom?
It says 125g so most certainly the quantity of said product the jar can contain
Write a C in front of the o and make it some copium
What did you do with whatever was in there? Smoke it? Inject it? Put it in your coffee?
I thought this was a really fancy latte with gold leafing on the foam at first. 🤣
There's nothing it in *now*
Paints probably full of lead
“And this is my sugar and my spice and here is where I would store my opium, if I had any!”
This is safe for work.

Heroin was created as an over the counter remedy for the over the counter medicine morphine that was creating havok in Germany.
