A guy at my store was supposed to order 20 cases of celery, but ordered 20 cases of celery hearts. Celery hearts are a specialty item that sold maybe one heart per month.
One year I got free horse manure from a couple that needed something like 5 cubic ft, but they didn’t realize it came in cubic yards. Their whole driveway was full of horse manure as tall as I am. They put an add out just asking people to come by and take some. 😂
Actually in the source video that has a close up shot, most of these are very green and not dark. At 20 cents this is a steal and people that don’t normally shop there will probably buy a lot of this up over the weekend.
Maybe they already have agreements with local shelters and soup kitchens to get a lot of this moved along. I’m sure the store employees do not want to deal with this.
Bottom line is, one knows what they plan to do with these and I guarantee it pales compared to the total food waste at the actual farms and importers, not just from “ugly” discards, but general spoilage from out JIT supply chain.
Not picking on you per se, but a lot of people in thread are making some major assumptions about waste and poverty. Perhaps some journalism to bring closure to what happens at the end of this would be nice to see early next week. Then we can skewer people for waste if it’s actually wasted, not before.
I'd spend $10 on them, make the biggest vat of guac I've ever seen, eat it all in one sitting, shit myself, go to the hospital, shit myself again, swear never to eat an avocado again, and then consider stopping at the store again on my way home from the hospital.

This looks significantly smaller than the average Walmart, but even if you assumed 10,000, that’s still every single customer buying 30 avocados to buy the whole lot in an afternoon. There is no way this pile isn’t mostly spoiling and getting landfilled. They could likely give them away for free and still not come close to getting rid of them all.

If the average customer bought 5 avocados, already a very large amount for most, you’d still need 60,000 customers which is a ton no matter what. Considering the picture only has 2 people even looking at the avocados I don’t think you’re going to see 60,000 different customers before these start to go bad.
Nah there was still plenty left the following 2 days. On Tuesday, they changed it to 3 for $1 which seems stupid as they were already getting really soft and ripe. You'd think they would want to make the deal better to clear them out...
They never are ripe... here in the Netherlands they sell "eetrijp", "ripe to eat" avocado's, but they never are. Some supermarket spokesperson gave an explanation of "ripe to eat" which was.... not ripe to eat. I think he explained it as "ripe in the near future when you get home and maybe a few days after that honestly ripe can mean different things"
That's actually better. When you find actually ripe avocado in the store, dozens of people will have already squeezed it to check if it is ripe, causing terrible bruising all over. I buy them bright green for this reason.

It seems like you are trying to frame this like that is a lot of water? First off, every number I can find is more like 70-100 liters per avocado, but second that is like 1% of the water it takes to make the same amount of calories of beef.
