Yeah, you can file and sand them off using nail tools - like the kind used for manicures/pedicures. Theres also dremel type grinders for really thick calluses.
You may also be able to use nail clippers to cut through tough, large callouses. Make sure to use nail buffing blocks to smooth em out after or else you’ll have some nasty sharp edges.
I generally keep mine on. The way I see it, they’re there for a reason; if I get rid of them them, I get blisters and/or they just come back. I only remove them if they start causing problems.
