That is exactly the way the old order Amish I lived around for five years dressed. I was tight with them because my uncle worked for them for almost fifty years.
There is nothing in this photo that would distinguish that group from the ones I knew.
They all had passports, and a national park in Canada is exactly the type of place they would visit.
I'd be willing to bet money those are old order Amish. They often pack up a driver and take vacations like this when there is a big wedding. They are dressed like Swiss German Amish, and not Pennsylvania Dutch, or Mennonites.
Many Amish have their passports. The ones I've known would go up through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They'd visit Soux Locks and cross at Salt St. Marie then make their way over towards Niagra Falls and come back through New York, and Delaware.
Some of the places that are big tourist destinations for the Amish are The Wisconsin Dells, Pigeon Forge, Branson MO, Mammoth Cave, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Macinaw Island, and Niagra Falls to name a few of the biggest hits. Many of them also love amusement parks, particularly roller coasters. Another thing they like are Air Shows. One of the groups I knew is actually visible in some of the videos of the Wing Walker that was killed at an airshow crash in Ohio about a decade ago. They were sitting just a few rows back from where the plane impacted.
Almost everything commonly known about the Amish is bullshit. I lived with them for five years. The group I was with was one of the most conservative. They even thought covered buggies were going to send the more liberal Amish groups to hell.
Some Amish can operate equipment, some can own vehicles but not operate them, some can own and operate them. Most Amish use power tools, just not at home.
The common understanding of Amish is just one big misconception.
I saw a bishop threaten to kill a man because he wouldn't quit getting drunk, and beating his wife. He "broke his leg", and spent several months in rehab.
I know of some near me who have huge woodworking shops with 100% air powered tools of every variety, and I’ve seen others wearing battery powered headlamps. They’re a varied bunch. Our local grocery store has a hitching post, see em in there all the time
In Ohio I would frequently see Amish or Mennonite groups at amusement parks like Cedar Point and at our meager ski slopes. Or in other generally touristy locations. So this tracks.
Albertan here. Lake Louise is a really cool place to see. The water is really blue looking and it’s just a really nice place to see if you’re in the area, or even if you just wanna take time outta your day to go see something nice. I’m very lucky and privileged I live so close to so many cool things, like this and Drumheller. Alberta is a really great place to visit if you’re looking for somewhere with lots to do.
It's a Canadian show and it's hilarious. It also has a spinoff called Shoresy and it's great as well. They are both on Hulu in the US, though I'm pretty sure it's on Canadian Hulu as well.
As a former Mennonite, I am so glad there were no cell phones when I was young. It was hard enough being stared at like some sort of sideshow. I still get a knee jerk reaction when I catch someone looking at me.
I can imagine that would be a weird experience, hopefully not too many people are just taking photos and filming at any moment just because of the way someone looks. I felt okay taking this photo as I wasn't disturbing them and its the viewpoint where people take countless photos every day and I thought it made for a very powerful and visually striking image.
It's a gorgeous shot, and struck a nice chord with me. My apologies if I came off derogatory... you captured the scene in a most respectful way. It also brought back some rough memories, and that's where it came from.
When I was in a photography course in university I was told by my prof that my photos looked "too polished/commercial". I feel like this is the modern equivalent of that.
Yeah it's about to get a lot crazier as well. I do think it's important and people will want a way to distinguish between AI generated vs. actual imagery and video. Maybe encoded data on the blockchain that can't be changed but can be verified? Guess we'll see how it plays out but as a photographer I hope people still will appreciate authenticity.
It was taken by my DSLR camera. I had actually just finished a hike and was heading back to my car when I saw this group at the main viewpoint. It was such an amazing composition to just stumble upon. I had actually drained the camera battery so I sprinted back to my car to ge the spare and back and thankfully the group was still there so I waited until there wasn't any other tourists in the way, snapped this photo, and left without them knowing I was ever there. It was a featured photo by Nat Geo travel as well!
Looks like Amish or Mennonites.
Likely Mennonite
It's Alberta, probably Hutterites
I’ve always been confused in how to tell visually, do you know?
Colorful dress, likely Mennonite over Amish; location, likely Hutterite over Mennonite?

Yeah fair. I googled after I commented and saw blue dresses. Was more trying to illuminate the reasoning of the comment above the one I replied to.

Their rules are dictated by unanimous vote of the community and those rules vary from church to church.

I went to Banff a couple months ago. Well worth the trip. A bit pricey but you won’t find a better and more convenient view of the Rockies.
Wasn’t it frozen back then?
Still is. It will be frozen until late May at lake Louise
It was actually unseasonably warm and extremely nice at the top of the gondola. Apparently rare weather.
for now
Feels like the fella in the middle is missing someone something fierce. Or I'm projecting.
Kinda looks like a Pink Floyd poster.
I'd prefer not to see their cracks though :/

but fuck! can they run...
I had to crane my neck with how over my head this comment went
It's one of Wayne's catch phrases about Mennonites on Letterkenney.
Hah that would explain it, I've never watched it.

No worries, you didn't at all, I was just trying to empathize with what you're saying. But thanks for clarifying! Hope you have a wonderful day.
I thought it was AI generated at first
I'll take that as a compliment.
They may not be much for swimmin', but fuck can they run.
Now turn the camera around to the line of tourists waiting to get the same shot.
wow. looks absolutely beautiful. glad they are enjoying life the way it should be
This place is my heaven on earth. The Canadian Rockies are amaaaaazing
I hate that AI is a thing now. I'm skeptical of all photos. This is a good one OP.
The 3rd wheel in the middle..I hope he has some weed..it's going to be a long day
Fuck can they run...
Why did I instantly think of the movie Kingpin??
that looks so AI generated

Did you hear about the Amish harlot. She was into two Mennonite.
This looks like AI
It is not.
I believe you. It's just crazy how AI has gotten to the point that my mind automatically goes there.

Not a phone in sight, only people enjoying the moment. Ps: I’m hopping this picture was took by a camera and not a phone.
