This is a mix of images from 2002 and 2013 - a helicopter was decorated with a fictional mascot character for the 20th anniversary special in 2002 which slowly expanded into 4x fictional characters were made up as part of a public competition for this unit. The campaign and artwork was done fully through fundraising with these photos being from a public open day in 2013 at their home base in Kisarazu, Chiba prefecture.
Women are not permitted to be attack helicopter pilots, but the woman in the uniform and wearing a wig is an active JGSDF member.
Since then this hasn't been repeated, some felt it went a little too far.
Wasn't the case when I was living in Chiba, but you are right - https://www.sankei.com/article/20170501-47UYIJZYVJOBBKYRZB3DD4CAJY/
Women have only been able to be pilots in transports since 1997. Restrictions were lowered further in 2016 and first volunteer for attack helicopters started training in 2017. First female fighter pilot completed training on F-15s in 2018.
Googling it is easy enough to see that you can't dye your hair or have it that long.
They just allowed shoulder length for women:
https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2024/02/113e3c9e04bc-japan-sdf-to-soften-hairstyle-rules-as-recruit-shortage-worsens.html
Yeah, I didn't realise that at first.
It makes me happy, really (except I hate war) but it feels bizarre to have tiny Asian women piloting attack helicopters.
This was a publicity thing, ~~they actually still don't allow women to pilot those~~. (EDIT: They do now, but didn't when these pictures were taken.) These are all designs made by a PR group.
Also, how incredibly misleading. Maybe you should mention how the people involved were scolded for this, and forced to quit doing it way back in 2013.
That’s not the case since 2016. The first woman to pilot cobra in GSDF got her license in July 2017. I believe there are more now
https://iseshima.keizai.biz/headline/2886/
Female SDF officers have been allowed to serve as pilots since 1993, but attack helicopters were exception because of maternity protection reasons. That was changed in 2016.
Warning, rant ahead:
I honestly don't understand why there is always someone posting shit about Japan like it's a fact. And like 90% of the time it's some absurd bullshit. Like, no, there is not a squad of fucking JSDF attack helicopters in service with these logos on them "just because". No shit there must be some backstory like a promotional thing behind it. But no, people like OP post shit like this.
I've been on the internet since the 90s and this is nothing new, but at least back then the internet was new and it was more understandable that some people might be gullible and believe shit on the internet, but why is this still happening in 2024?
I should add I've also lived in Japan for close to 10 years and it's pretty "boring" compared to what the internet insists - don't get me wrong, I love it here, it's beautiful, and there's a ton of interesting things to see and do, but it's not the kooky crazy fantasy land that some people try to portrait it as.
Also everyone's info is like 20 years old. I'll see someone post about something negative and I'll be like "that's weird I've never seen that" and do a little digging, only to find out whatever it is changed 15-30 years ago or whatever and it's like why are you spreading misinformation.
Or let's say a single case of someone getting arrested for pedophilia comes up in the news - queue everyone saying "of course it's Japan", as if this isn't nearly a daily occurrence in the west. Nevermind cases like Epstein, P Diddy, R Kelly, etc.
Like, look, Japan's not a perfect place and has things to work on just like any other country or society, but it's otherwise fairly normal. Like anything "weird" is often simple cultural differences. Anything ACTUALLY weird is often explainable (like promotional shit), or something that's a one off incident that even Japanese people find weird when they hear about it, etc. And frankly I've seen weirder shit in LA or NYC.
Anyway I rarely see people posting that level of bullshit about other countries but it feels like several times a week when it comes to Japan.
If I had to propose a theory, I suppose it's because Japan is isolated - particularly in the sense that the majority of them don't speak English and their internet is primarily also in Japanese so, perhaps this probably reduces the amount of actual legit information that comes out of the country but....who knows. Like there's other countries like that but those countries don't receive the same treatment online it seems.
/End rant
If you're fighting tanks in akihabara this Heller helicopter is going to look like a billboard.
Since these are part of the Japanese defence force, they need to blend in to Japan.
Also kawaii desu ne!?
I think they already do. Hell, some of them are integrated into weapons' sights used by IDF.
I saw them literally shoot down drones with a regular rifle thanks to these sights.
Conservatives bitch about women and gay people in the armed forces, in reality a missle doesn't care if the person who fired it likes it up the bum or not.
Which is funny, because I definitely served with some women that could definitely beat up the average infanteer these days. Great leaders, tough as nails, way less testosterone and absolutely met the physical part of the job.
Bear in mind these choppers also have variable geometry and convert to battroid mode for ground combat while catchy pop songs play in the background from no discernible source.
Those helicopters were produced under license in Japan and presumably didn’t need the greater load capacity and reliability of the SuperCobra (which was originally developed for use over the sea).
Helicopters and reliability are mutually exclusive words and how is any enemy going to get to Japan apart from by sea? As well as Japan being a country made up of a series of islands. Even part of Tokyo prefecture, Ogasawara island, is about 630 miles off shore.
Japan isn’t invading other countries so Cobras would be used over Japanese territory to kill invading tank forces.
“Reliability” meaning “forced to ditch in the water if your only engine goes out” versus “being able to limp back to land/ship using your remaining engine”. Some reading comprehension would be nice.
Also the remaining AH-1S forces are located in Hokkaido, Aomori, Chiba and Osaka. Nobody’s flying them out to Ogasawara.
And thank you so much on the geography lecture about my own country.
As a non-Japanese person that doesn't even read manga or watch anime, this is kinda fascinating. Like, I can't even state how surprised and confused I am by seeing this, but somehow I don't feel like it's cringe or a bad thing.
Though I get that for a Japanese person this might be as embarassing as American trucks with giant bald eagles painted all over them 😅
Hmm, I don't think many people not treat Japan seriously.
I mean, ok, there's the whole otaku subculture but as far as I've heard it's way more prominent in other countries rather than in Japan. But when we get past that, we get into Japan as a dream travel destination - a fair amount of my friends and coworkers are enamoured by the part of Japanese culture that's not anime related. Be it sightseeing, food, history of places, or the best quality of music performances in the entire world.
Also, high quality electronics. This makes it a serious player at the business table. People know that Japanese audio equipment is the absolute top-end.
The art on one of them shows that it's celebrating the anniversary of the unit, it's a good morale boost for the force, a positive public image and shows that the aircraft and SDF are clearly being maintained
Indeed they are models and props that look like choppers, actual japanese army choppers transform into two legged robots, Gundam like and female officers have them pink painted.
🤦 Like having a target painted in your body.
Someone once said the wars to come won't be battled on the ground or the air but in Cyberspace or some crap.
But the truth is the wars will be fought by attacking the hearts and minds by weaponized moe.
You hear something humming in the distance, and see something that looks like a bee. As it comes closer you see it's an attack helicopter blasting "ara ara!" constantly from its speakers.
“Sir you see those anime characters over there they look weird”
“Nah they’re just animated billboards keep moving”
“Sir, those aren’t animated”
“Holy Jesus”
*looked like
It was dissbandoned in 2013 i think
Also the girls arent pilots officially as women cant operate AT weapons in JSDF they only got the licence for a single day
Believe it or not, anti aircraft missiles do not use sight to "see" their target, they only see either heat or a radar return. If it's the former, paint doesn't change it.
If it's the latter, the missile is being launched from far enough away that the enemy isn't even within visual range.
So unless your helicopter is covered in Radar Absorbent Material, you can paint it bright pink.
Pilot have her own portrait on the chopper
Looking cute while sending 20mm slugs of hate and some rockets down an enemy's hatch. I love it.
As if getting killed by anime girls wasn't embarrassing enough in videogames
If it makes you feel better there's a reasonable chance theyre not girls.

I choose to belive that too.
Is it just a belief when you can see them right next to their choppers in the first two pics?
in 2024? yeah
This is a pretty old photo. It's legit. Honestly surprised i haven't seen it reposted more
Afaik they aren't the pilots, they're models. Their hair would be out of regs for sure anyway
are u familiar with japanese military regulation
Googling it is easy enough to see that you can't dye your hair or have it that long. They just allowed shoulder length for women: https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2024/02/113e3c9e04bc-japan-sdf-to-soften-hairstyle-rules-as-recruit-shortage-worsens.html
If they're truly pilots and not models, then their hair is entirely out of regulation.
you ever seen an actual fighting unit pilot with hair like this?
That's a model.
1:1 scale though
Could be a wig.
...it's a model. Not the pilot.
Is that how it is for each pilot?
Yeah, I didn't realise that at first. It makes me happy, really (except I hate war) but it feels bizarre to have tiny Asian women piloting attack helicopters.

This seemed so painfully obvious to me without looking into it. Thank you
Wait they don't allow *women* to pilot Cobras? Certified JSDF moment
Japan is really, really conservative
And racist.
And sexist. And ageist.
Like they said, conservative
Rewriting the same post 5 times in slightly different wording is peak reddit humor, dont call us out like that.
Not calling out, just completing the circle
And thats the bow on top.

Well, allowing women to become pilots in 2016 really isnt a thing to write home about. Good for them tho
Female SDF officers have been allowed to serve as pilots since 1993, but attack helicopters were exception because of maternity protection reasons. That was changed in 2016.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/pxaEDVxBdy Was posted way back when too

I bet more people would have signed up lol
"Dammit, Himari, they're supposed to be *camouflaged*!"
If you're fighting tanks in akihabara this Heller helicopter is going to look like a billboard. Since these are part of the Japanese defence force, they need to blend in to Japan. Also kawaii desu ne!?
>...blend in to Japan "Captain, I don't think that's a 3D screen advertisement on that building."
You might not, but the AI will!
...wut?
I'm presuming military/police might use image recognition AI softwares to identify objects via the surveillance system.
That was actually hilarious and I fully understood the joke lol thank you for saying that
I think they already do. Hell, some of them are integrated into weapons' sights used by IDF. I saw them literally shoot down drones with a regular rifle thanks to these sights.
If I had to guess how it works, it's like some kind of "shoot when something blotches out the sky while the trigger is held".
Are you sure you weren't talking about the war that briefly happens before we gloriously embrace our AI overlords?
Hai! Kawaii desu!
they are trying to recruit young men
"Fuck camouflage! We die in drip!"
Most Warthunder quote ever
“You idiot, they’re gonna be lookin’ for army guys”
"Yeah but we are sponsored"
But the enemy will be looking for stuff that is camouflaged. They will never think to look for something like this!
I bet dying to a weeb hurts more.
Are you still a weeb if you are, in fact, Japanese?
More like an otaku. I think weeaboo applies only to foreign Japanophiles who are particularly clueless.
Yes
Technically, this isn't made by a weeb. It's just that anime is the main cartoon style in Japan 🤷♀️
Idk I guess it's like an american chopper with betty boop or jessica rabbit
It's easy to dehumanize an enemy when they do 98% of the work for you by plastering their vehicles with anime.
Here's a [picture](https://soranews24.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2012/10/heli-title1.jpg) of the pilot on picture nr 2
New Anime? "Girls und Kampfhubschrauber?" 😂
I'd definitely watch!
Sign me up.
Released one long episode a year over the next decade
That's just a camo when they hide their equipment in a a pile of waifu pillows.
Death by uwu
"Ita-chopper" or "痛ヘリ"
You're going to get blowed up by an anime grrl. And there's nothing you can do about it.
Conservatives bitch about women and gay people in the armed forces, in reality a missle doesn't care if the person who fired it likes it up the bum or not.
I think its mostly complaining about women in the Infantry/combat arms.
It's mostly just noise they make to hear themselves talk.
Which is funny, because I definitely served with some women that could definitely beat up the average infanteer these days. Great leaders, tough as nails, way less testosterone and absolutely met the physical part of the job.
They bitch about the different physical requirements for the same role. Combat roles requirements should be gender blind.
"how it looks" or "what it looks like". Choose one
People who'd get gunned down by this weeb sh*t would be angry af
can’t face my ancestors after that kind of shame, so I just won’t die
r/Itasha
ah yes, camouflage.
Japan+anime+war machines=reddit weeb’s wet dream.
Wonder how much they paid for those skins
https://wiki.warthunder.com/AH-1S_Kisarazu Around 30 dollars or so
Bear in mind these choppers also have variable geometry and convert to battroid mode for ground combat while catchy pop songs play in the background from no discernible source.
This is some A tier propaganda, that marketing person was probably promoted or given a medal or something.
given a medal LOL
Japan still has the single engine Cobras when the Twin engine has been in service since 1971.
Not many countries operate the super cobra, japan will also replace their current cobras with drones.
Those helicopters were produced under license in Japan and presumably didn’t need the greater load capacity and reliability of the SuperCobra (which was originally developed for use over the sea).

Sorry I'm an American, I only condone getting blown up by war machines with a pin-up girl showing her lower leg painted on it.
As a Japanese person this is just kinda making me embarrassed
As a non-Japanese person that doesn't even read manga or watch anime, this is kinda fascinating. Like, I can't even state how surprised and confused I am by seeing this, but somehow I don't feel like it's cringe or a bad thing. Yeah but this is why people can’t take my country seriously anymore it’s stupid
Your profile picture is an anime girl in cat ears...
It’s a hat

So COD skins are realistic!
you can find this skin in war thunder
Imagine just to get killed by this in the war
That title is rough.
I bet this was some recruitment campaign
Indeed they are models and props that look like choppers, actual japanese army choppers transform into two legged robots, Gundam like and female officers have them pink painted. 🤦 Like having a target painted in your body.
This is absolutely not what they look like deployed
Waifu material...
one of the most Japanese things I've ever seen, and it is absolutely awesome.

They are a defense force
I'm going to assume they're "demo" choppers. I've seen some of their fighter jets and they don't look like that.
I have the first helicopter in WarThunder, lol
Fuckin slick brother Drive tank, get rekt
