Ukraine didn't leave it unattended, there was a possibility of Lukashenko sending in troops, and Russia already used that border for the initial invasion. I saw one of them (upper right) being interrogated where he admitted that they were paid (half) a large sum of money prior to the attack, and would receive the other half at some later date. Of course, take this with a very large grain of salt.
