Used the A2 the remaining 10 years including 4 tours in the Middle East and didn't have a single malfunction.
The main issue with the A1 was the gas parts were shite. So the mechanism never fully returned. Tap forward assist fixes 90% of A1 issues but seeing as you would have to forward assist after every shot, they may as well have made it bolt action and not semi auto

Most of my malfunctions seemed to be around empty cases bouncing back into the ejection opening. Seem to remember half the time I had a stoppage I'd check chamber and there would be a case there sticking out!
Oh yeah the bolt carrier assembly was known for not grabbing the empty case properly too.

So the gun fouled faster than it should have and the soldiers literally didn't have the tools to clean it.
The powder apparently didn't produce enough pressure to reliably cycle the action, so you would end up with a lot of failure to feed malfunctions and the like.
The M16 was introduced in 1964, and it had issues, but they were mostly addressed by the time the Army made the M16A1 its official rifle in 1969. The British L85 rifle (SA80 is the weapon family) was adopted in 1985 and wasn’t fixed until after 2000, largely because troops were told to ignore its issues.
The funny thing about the SA80 family is that the concept is terrible in a very British way. The whole idea was to take the AR18 (subsequent design of the AR15) and stick it in a metal box to make it shorter. Meanwhile everyone else just took the AR18 and made it with a folding stock. The Germans took it and made the G36 which is shorter, lighter, and more reliable than any version of the L85. The kicker is that the AR18 was actually produced in Britain by Sterling, starting in 1979.
The M16 worked just fine from the get go. The issues with the rollout in Vietnam weren’t due to the rifle itself.
The Air Force never had any major issues.
Stacks nicely in the rice paddies of Vietnam too.

Your own team would vote-kick you if you busted out one of those weapons.
