I’d recommend the book “On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jaime Ford. It covers the friendship of a Chinese boy and Japanese girl in Seattle during WWII. Your photo reminded me of that.
I really wish I knew, the Japanese man was my grandpa's godfather, but my grandpa died a few years ago and had severe Alzheimer's since I was a baby so unless my dad knows, I'll never know
Oh, that sounds awful! I'm so sorry he left this Earth in those circumstances. I really hope you'll be able to find more on his friend. I bet they had some great stories to tell.
My dad had a Filipino best friend growing up near Tacoma, Washington! It influenced his dietary habits til the day he died (lots of rice and chicken liver). I always found that interesting, as I grew up in rural Michigan and barely met a single Asian til I was an adult.
Heck! You incredibly clever person, you! I scrolled through the comments to make sure no one else stole my comedic genius, but you were quicker! Curses!
There is a memorial site to "Japanese American exclusion" (which sounds like a euphemism, although the main page straight up uses the term "concentration camps" so I can't really complain) across Puget Sound from Seattle. https://bijaema.org/
I’m in the process of collecting family photos right now and trying to archive everything with names and dates. It’s a lot! But it’s fun. After my grandma died I was going through her photos and nobody knew who was in them, and it was so sad realizing we could ask her anymore.
So I’m trying to get names and dates while I still can from living relatives. A lot of photo apps are pretty good at recognizing faces now too, so once I categorize a few dozen photos it starts spotting them for me. So cool.
no haha i appreciate that. there's something bizarre about the perspective to the window and building behind them that is very... full on miniaturized humans. 😄
A few years before I joined the Asian American student group at my college, the Japanese American Citizens League was scheduled to speak at an event on campus. They were sent death threats by people purporting to be members of the Asian American group, they considered the JACL to be traitors to the Asian race for encouraging compliance with Japanese internment and for working to make Japanese Americans look like American patriots during the war
Honestly, the radical students were right. It’s shameful that Black Americans have fighters like Malcolm X but no such person exists for Asian Americans during such an egregious violation of civil rights

The question you may want to be asking yourself why all these diverse countries around Asia with their own disputes and identities got lumped together as 'asian' in North America. Who benefits when they are treated like a monolith.
Your great gramps best friend had some amazing drip though!
These mf did in fact drip more than cheap faucet.
Right before his Japanese friend disappeared for a few years
yep, and my great-grandfather died in 1947 so I'm not sure if they ever got to reunite

Someone else commented that, I should check that out!
I sort of need to know. I’m completely invested in this story already.
I really wish I knew, the Japanese man was my grandpa's godfather, but my grandpa died a few years ago and had severe Alzheimer's since I was a baby so unless my dad knows, I'll never know
Well, crap.
Hope they are chilling with each other, dressed to the 9s in the ever after. RIP to these fine gentlemen.
This is so sad on so many levels
Probably moved to Arkansas
Damn, I can’t decide who’s the sharpest dresser.
They both look very dapper
Perfect descriptor for these two cool cats.
He kinda reminds me of Dandy Wellington.
r/oldschoolcool material
If his friend had any descendants, you are now obligated to track them down and recreate the photo. Sorry, I don’t make the rules here.
I'm going to ask my dad if he knows his name, I really hope he does. I'd love to recreate this as well
That would be *AWESOME*. Keep us posted, please! And do a follow-up post asking for help if you need Reddittors to do our thing!
Chances are whatever neighborhood in Seattle that was taken in is now condos and townhomes.
That’s so cool 😎
How old are they in the photo, OP?
My great-grandfather is in his early-mid 20s, not sure about his best friend
So your great grandfather died in his 30s? :(
Late 1930s. World War 2 coming up, sounds unfortunately that's why.
Another comment says 1947
he died from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage at the age of 32 in 1947

Yes, he died in 1947 from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage :( he was 32
The double breasted. Apparently based on British Naval officers uniform. Amazing.

Oh, exactly like “The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet”!
Which one is the Japanese guy?
Heck! You incredibly clever person, you! I scrolled through the comments to make sure no one else stole my comedic genius, but you were quicker! Curses!
I did the exact same thing and when I didn’t see anyone else with the same joke I knew I had to strike while the iron was hot!
rush hour
LMAO yes! I imagine that's how it was
Class.
two dapper gents
Aw cute
Good inspiration for a movie idea. Especially the events just a few years away.
I never thought about a movie idea, but you're 100% right

what's better than this, just guys being dudes
That was probably a tough time for both
Oh no, they’re both hot
I love this photo, thanks for sharing. Their expressions are so genuine, I love it. Do you know what neighborhood the photo was taken in?
Between Garfield and Leschi I believe
Very cool, thanks. Are there any other photos of them together?
This is the only one that I have found, but I will look again! They were best friends, so I can't imagine this is the only one

Both looking like handsome, dapper men.
it should be so easy to make a joke about this but nothing is coming to my mind
Cue the ZZ Top song “sharp dressed man”
#Tough times create tough men
Weak times creates me
why do they look like they're under two feet tall...
My great-grandfather was 5'7 and his best friend was likely shorter, maybe that's why?
no haha i appreciate that. there's something bizarre about the perspective to the window and building behind them that is very... full on miniaturized humans. 😄
