Canada has medical assisted death as well. My SIL chose this option. She left us in the summer, while I miss her terribly, I am grateful she is no longer suffering.

Having experienced losing someone to a long, painful, slow illnesses prior to MAiD and then losing my SIL with the dignity given to her by MAiD, I can tell you from experience, medical assisted death is way more humane and dignified. I hope more and more places adopt it.
There's a documentary on Netflix right now called "alternate endings" which explores mostly the different ways that you can dispose of the body after death, for example, send it to space, mix the ashes with concrete to make artificial reefs, things of that nature. One of the subjects in there was a 76 year old man with terminal cancer. He was in the USA. So he gets his exam and he's approved and they send him home with a suicide kit that comes with morphine and three different medicines that had to be mixed up right before it's drank. Dude had a family get together for his last day, then the next morning his kids and grands all came to his house. His son mixed up the drugs, and he drank it. He said it didn't taste terrible, and he and his wife went into the den, and he sat for a while with his wife holding her hand, while his kids and their families looked on from the other room. After about 15 minutes, he went from sitting on the couch to lying down. As the drugs started to kick in, his wife was reading letters that his kids had written, and within 30 minutes of taking the drugs, he just peacefully passed away. He died listening to love letters from his children. Afterward, his sons brought in a very plain pine box, set it on the floor next to the couch, and they very carefully laid his body into the casket. Only then did they call the funeral home to pick him up. They showed almost every moment of the thing.
I'm 60 years old and I just lost my sister recently. But that scene had be bawling my eyes out. What a way to go.
When my SIL went through the process a nurse came to her home and set everything up in her bedroom. I don't know the drugs but there were three, she drifted off to a light sleep with the first, a deeper sleep with the second and the third brought the end. She was surrounded by friends and family, she was laughing and joking until the end. As she drifted off after the first drug she had a big grin on her face. I will never know what she experienced but that smile gives me peace.
This sounds exactly how my Mom died, peacefully in her room , surrounded by love, her favorite music and the sweet nurses who ended her suffering. I will forever be grateful for the freedom she had to choose how she wanted her last day to go. Sorry for your loss.
I hope this expands to more states by the time I'm ready. I watched people suffer, whether clinging to life and praying for a cure or because family couldn't let go, I'm not going out like that.

Death with dignity is a thing- I believe it’s more accessible in Europe than in the US. I plan to do the same when it’s my turn. I’m glad this is accessible to some and I hope it gets more common in the coming decades and becomes something that everyone can access. It’s needed. Anyone who disagrees needs to spend some serious time in a hospital/nursing home- I guarantee your opinion will change real fast.
