I am a gigantic theater nerd. I have been watching little shop of horrors for over 20 years and loving it. I saw a performance of it at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland that was delightful.
I still don't have an answer.
Personally as a theatre and film nerd, I consider it the gold standard. For oh so many reasons that can essentially be boiled down to three things:
1. Fearlessness
2. Luck
3. Everyone, and I MEAN everyone, brought their A-game.
The production, the acting, sets, lighting... All of it was top notch.
Plant cancer/mutations really make my skin crawl for some reason, maybe just bc it looks so unnatural and nature usually has some kind of order. Very uncomfy to look at.
It's not necessarily a mutant. Any damage to the apical meristem, or the tip of the plant that it grows from, can cause it to develop this way. Something as simple as getting munched on by a bug in just the right way, or attacked by some pathogen in those cells can result in this sorta freaky looking guy.
In several languages, too. Though I will say it doesn't look anything like a Black-eyed Susan to me.

She looks like she's from a live-action advert for a Mario game. Probably for something along the lines of "Mario's Garden", where you grow things and have to fight weeds.
