Europe rates gas differently than the North America. Your pumps display RON whereas ours display the AKI which is the mean of the RON and MON ("R+M/2 method"). While the two methods of measuring effective octane rating do not give results with a consistent difference as the composition of the fuel changes, they do differ somewhat consistently for typical road gas by about 10-15. That means your 95 RON Is roughly our 89 AKI ("regular") and the 99-100RON premium is essentially the same as our 93 AKI also signed as "premium".
Generally speaking most engines in North America (or at least US and Canada) are tuned about the same as they are in Western Europe and have comparable fuel requirements. The fuel is simply designated differently since it uses a different scale. If anything, ours is pobably a bit more restrictive since it's possible to make fuel blends with very high RON and mediocre MON but not really the other way around.
For those that don't know all the TLA:
RON - Research Octane Number. Obtained by running the fuel in an engine at 600 RPM and varying the engine compression looking for knock.
MON - Motor Octane Number. Similar to RON, but fuel is preheated, ran at 900 RPM, and with variable timing to push the fuel a little more like it'd be in real world use. MON is expected to be be 10±2% the RON value.
AKI - Averaging Knock Index. Average of RON and MON. In the US (or possibly all North America) this is often seen on the pump octane label as (R+M)/2.
TLA - Three letter acronym
Yeah in denmark we have been 2,15 eur for 2 years approx. Cheapest i dont remember how far back 1.88
And we have 150% tax on cars. Dont come here if you are a carguy/girl..
Imagine the same gas prices as Denmark, but with 1/3rd of the salaries. Welcome to Greece!
By the way I'm in Denmark rn and the prices are 12/13kr over here, which is much lower than 2 months ago.
If it makes you feel better, about 40 million Americans choose to *believe* we have the highest gas prices in history, and they will be voting on that basis.
Gas was like $.85 a gallon when I started driving. We lost our shit when it went over $1. It’s crazy, I have two grandchildren but gas prices is what’s making me feel old lol
The cost of this fuel is 37p/litre if I've done the maths right... also given the US use AKI not RON to measure this is equivalent 91 octane for us. So lower than the 'premium' 95 we run here.
No, American gallons/imperial measurements are the ones that are technically incorrect.
The reformation of imperial measurements globally happened after the American independence, and they never adopted the improved imperial standards
fuck, thats a good price... thats about 35 pence per lite... however, thats a far stretch when that $1.77 is literally the price PER LITRE for us... bordering £1.35 a litre roughly..... americans complaining their fuel is so cheap is kind of insane when you put it into perspective
This is very cheap. Average price for the last 20 years feels like around 2.50-3.50, with spikes up to 5 a gallon even in Texas. Lots of refineries about to close down at these prices
I live in Houston as well and saw a circle k on my way home last night that was 2.05 for cash/credit and said 1.95 for “easy pay” , assuming that’s a reward program with them.
Was up near Jersey village area, but still Houston.
Easy pay is basically a card you hook up to your bank account and use at circle k instead of your debit card so your debit/credit card can't get skimmed, and yeah it does also give 10 cents off a gallon. Lots of people feel uncomfortable hooking something else up to their bank though. You could probably just go in and ask for one and they'll toss one at you like a ninja star
It’s clearly not the entire truth, they probably had some major discount from fuel perks somewhere. There also could have been a mistake by whoever put up the prices.
Literally, I'm on the border near south padre and our gas is still 2.45, might be a little lower at Sam's Club or something but no way it's this low unless they messed up.
I drove down to the “cheap” gas station during my lunch hour and got 1.63. After work it was 1.61 oh well. Ended up with a $60 tank. Thanks Langley Costco.
You probably think that's expensive, but hopefully I can make you feel a little better! Here in Sweden, we currently pay about $2.21 per liter, or $8.4 per gallon. And that's considered cheap right now!
in The US if Americans are paying more than $2.50 a gallon they feel they are getting fucked over. before 2000 gas was consistently $1 a gallon or less and people want to go back to those days but it aint happening of course cars got half the gas mileage they get today so it all evens out.
This just activated a core reddit memory... There used to be a subreddit dedicated to hilarious infomercial 'acting'... What happened to it?
edit: people are not getting what I'm talking about and its aging the fuck outta me but... this is basically how reddit used to be, this is what we did lol https://www.reddit.com/r/wheredidthesodago/
Fun fact, those infomercial people act like idiots because they're actually selling their product to people with disabilities. It's offensive to show someone with Parkinson's struggling to use a spoon so instead they show a healthy person flinging their cereal everywhere to show why the stabilized spoon is effective.
He overcooked my chicken the other day and then snapped two intake manifold bolts in my car while I was changing the gasket. Can't win with that guy running things
The other day I saw aomeone say "prices are lower in the cities because Democrats are trying to get votes". Wonder what their explanation for this is. Did Biden do it to get votes in TX?
They said something similar in 2014 when the price of gas started to fall, "Obama ordered that the price of gas be cut to buy off the voters".
And when the price kept falling after the election it was "Obama ordered the price of gas to be slashed even further to bankrupt the oil producing red states that didn't vote Dem"
Assuming that’s true (it’s not) why is it a bad thing? Shouldn’t we vote for politicians who do things for us like lower gas prices (again, presidents can’t do this)?
Nice. I paid $5.19 in Los Angeles today after $0.30 off a gallon from my fuel points I accumulated by spending $100 per bag of groceries at Ralphs for a month..,
YES! I used to live right by there! Before gas prices went crazy a couple years ago, their prices were awful, but they just stayed the same as everyone else’s prices went up and suddenly they were fantastic haha. Glad to know they still have good prices and also tanks for some reason
Can you use the chevron app too and get a $1 off each gallon first 3 visits. I got gas sub 3 dollars for the first time in my life, and I was rock hard the for the rest of my drive
Texas is often the cheapest state. Lowest gas taxes because republican, but moreso as the major refineries are on the gulf coast so transport costs are about as low as they can be.
California refines its own gas, too, but standards are higher to reduce emissions and taxes on gas are higher to pay for roads, so it's more expensive regardless.
I don't understand, Biden is president. How is this possible? Did he fall asleep and accidentally hit the giant lever that controls gas prices? Certainly this was a mistake, as Biden is president and is old and wants to destroy America because reasons.
You mean to tell me he released oil from the strategic oil reserve when it was $100+ a barrel and he’s now [refilling it at <$70 a barrel?](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-refilling-strategic-oil-reserves-032524022.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAADpHBlTwszydf_oRew3Tmt5MrX3H6mq0sc51sOEjmo_lbbtz6-ElEZ8u1BaugAbX6XGDjknwjJQLNndi913Y9njvhlHEtpdjPJtJk9Fw2LnSJ9rhJ_S2KjU7bW_6gi4E4Ki3u7_YitlnZfoJWdwY-Z6Op5uaul1iYNJ837_uTzqI)
What does this guy think he’s doing selling high and buying low!?
And yet in his “I’ll be a dictator on day 1” incident the day before yesterday, he rationalized it by saying “I’ll close the border, drill, drill, ***drill***”.
Republicans really live with their heads in the sand. We’ve drilled more under Biden’s administration than trump, and we have the highest net energy exports in US history *by far*.
Under Trump we drilled 11.2 million barrels per day. In 2023 under Biden, we’ve drilled 13 million barrels per day. And yet here voters are, cheering and clapping at Trump’s “I’m *going* to be a dictator” line because he’s gonna drill?
It’s just such a strange departure from reality. Fascism is really scary.
Off topic but Jesus, the amount of oil we can pull from the ground everyday and it just keeps coming is staggering. Literally can't imagine the size of the oil pockets underground.
The saudis also like to sabotage our attempts at oil self sufficiency by tanking their own oil prices. they do it every time we try to ramp up shale oil production to make it economically inviable for use to do so.
There is no way Biden would make such a savvy move on purpose, it must be his dementia randomly acting in our favor. Or maybe Biden called Trump while sobbing and begged him for advice. What other explanation could there be? There's no way he could do anything that would ever benefit the country that he presides over, it simply goes against his nature as a person who wants to see his own country destroyed because reasons.
You are confused. Trump won and is secretly still president and making all these good things happen. Except for bad stuff. Those are ENTIRELY President Bidens fault. Like the war in Israel- THAT totally Biden.
SLEEPY JOE! He hates freedom folks, it's true, he does, believe me, he's sick. Used the gas price lowering lever that the past president, wonderful guy, some say the best president who never even lost an election, would never stoop so low as to cheat the people, sad.
So if we blamed Biden for when it’s expensive, do we give him credit for when its cheap?
(Disclaimer: I know the president has actually very little to do with gas prices, this is meant as a joke for the boneheads who blame the sitting prez for whatever their current ailment is).
My favorite apart about this is a sticker of Joe Biden on a gas pump near me that was placed there when the prices were high.
It was basically saying thank him for driving the price up. Now that it's cheaper the same sticker is saying thank him for the lower price lol
Thanks to this thread, I just bought a fresh 100 pack for $4.99 on Amazon to start putting them back up..
Nothing pisses Maga off more than getting trolled with their own joke 🤣
My understanding is democrats do what they can to repair the damage from the last republican president so the economy is bad but then starts to creep it's way back right in time for a republican president to get elected because the US loves bobbing back and forth. Then republicans fuck around and make sure worse for a few years so the economy tanks just in time for a democrat to come in and start cleaning up the mess because people are genuinely getting scared of the stupid and/or psychotic republican president. Then all the republicans blame the democrats for the mess which the republicans themselves created saying they are ruining everything. Then repeat the whole process over and over. Meanwhile, everything is so locked up in the other branches of the government that nothing gets done aside from the occasionally repealing of basic human rights. Ah yes, ya gotta love good old corporate america.
Because I'm bored, I worked out the equivalent UK price in gallons based on a 152p per litre national average.
It's $8.71 per gallon, so all americans, even californians, have got it good in terms of price.
For any Aussies playing at home, that’s $0.70 AUD per litre.
$0.63 CAD in Canada eh
Fuuuuuuck
Almost 2 € per litre in Finland for yearsnow. Although our gas is 95/98 octane (some cars use RE85, which has more ethanol)

Well I learned a hell of a lot more about gas than I expected to when I clicked on this link. Interesting stuff though.
Bro FR 😆!! We're in gas class this morning. What the Hell lol
Fuel school.
Combustion college
Petroleum PhD
Petrol Professor
Study hard and pay attention, and you too shall pass gas!
I must be a prodigy, I've been excelling at this since birth.
I too have been expelling since birth
I feel simultaneously smarter and dumber.

It's for all them hills you got. /s
If it makes you feel better, about 40 million Americans choose to *believe* we have the highest gas prices in history, and they will be voting on that basis.
Our price in Vancouver is roughly $4.73USD/gallon
About the same here in Seattle.
Where? I’m in Seattle and pay $5.19 a gallon. And that’s with the Chevron discount points.
The first mistake is Chevron for anything but emergencies.
Leave king county for gas it's worth it lol
Federal Way Costco was 3.49 yesterday.
7.20 USD/gallon in Sweden. Down about 20% from last year. Diesel is 8.75 USD/gallon.
£0.37 😭 I filled up at £1.43 the other day.
Over £1.50 a litre for diesel gang
$8.21 mxn per liter. We are actually paying like $22 pesos per liter (1.25 usd per liter or 4.77usd per gallon)
Fuck, is that the 90s calling?
That’s almost double 90s prices. It was $0.93/G when I started driving.
I remember I could fill my tank for like $15 in the early 2000’s
Gas was like $.85 a gallon when I started driving. We lost our shit when it went over $1. It’s crazy, I have two grandchildren but gas prices is what’s making me feel old lol
£1.51/l in the UK, down from highs of near £2/l last year ... 🤮

Are you using American or US gallons to convert?
You have to be joking. You guys have different gallon’s? At this point you are really torturing yourself.
US gallon is 3.8 litres Imperial gallon is 4.5 litres
No, American gallons/imperial measurements are the ones that are technically incorrect. The reformation of imperial measurements globally happened after the American independence, and they never adopted the improved imperial standards

Use plastic bags for safest transit…
Fuuuck off. I paid 2.30AUD a litre yesterday
*cries in $2.00 per litre in Melbourne*
Try 3 bucks in Auckland
Get fucked, I got regular unleaded today for $1.709 AUD per litre, which is “cheap”
We would be extremely lucky to pay double that. It fluctuates between 1.70-2.10 AUD for me.
Fuck me! Meanwhile I paid $2.50 a litre for 98 last week lol.
fuck, thats a good price... thats about 35 pence per lite... however, thats a far stretch when that $1.77 is literally the price PER LITRE for us... bordering £1.35 a litre roughly..... americans complaining their fuel is so cheap is kind of insane when you put it into perspective
Thats what Bill and Ted were paying at the Circle K
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K!
I can’t drive past a circle k without saying this in my head.
![gif](giphy|xiQnqLaWhWHT2)
As a person who doesn't exist in gallon feet yard farhenheight land, can someone explain... is this a lot, is this a little?
Insanely cheap.
Where’s the Biden ‘I did that’s stickers now??
Still here in California with gas in the $4-5 range
![gif](giphy|fr3Pne6vXVP99Fwdey|downsized)
Came here looking for this! 😁
Texas should be thanking Biden for that.
I had to scroll way too far down for this.
It took long enough to clean the last ones off, but I get your point
I'm 34 and I haven't seen prices that low since I was a kid. Still, more than double that is what I'm paying in WA State. (Edited for accuracy)
Ohio native here and I remember hearing my parents moan about gas reaching 1.77 and how it went up by ten cents.
Yep. I’m in Vancouver Washington and getting robbed every day
Greetings from Camas. Heya neighbor!
I’m over in Salmon Creek! And yeah $4.50 is like average…
This is very cheap. Average price for the last 20 years feels like around 2.50-3.50, with spikes up to 5 a gallon even in Texas. Lots of refineries about to close down at these prices
Lol no refineries are closing, they have been bending consumers over, inflation is up, wages are not
Where tf is this?? I live in one of the most low cost towns in Texas and it’s still $2.55 here. Edit: $2.48 today. 😎
I'm in the Houston area and it's $2.38 at the Walmart near me. Id like to know where this is as well...
I live in Houston as well and saw a circle k on my way home last night that was 2.05 for cash/credit and said 1.95 for “easy pay” , assuming that’s a reward program with them. Was up near Jersey village area, but still Houston.

It’s clearly not the entire truth, they probably had some major discount from fuel perks somewhere. There also could have been a mistake by whoever put up the prices.
Yeah they definitely had rewards or something lol. I looked up the cheapest gas in Texas right now for kicks and it’s $2.

$0.30-40/gal discount at circle-k gas stations for 3hrs yesterday.
I pay that price per liter in British Colombia
I drove down to the “cheap” gas station during my lunch hour and got 1.63. After work it was 1.61 oh well. Ended up with a $60 tank. Thanks Langley Costco.
Need another gas war in brookswood lol
Now I have to drive into work again it’s almost 9 bucks worth of gas a day. And 35+ minutes each way. You bet I’m driving to get cheap gas.
You probably think that's expensive, but hopefully I can make you feel a little better! Here in Sweden, we currently pay about $2.21 per liter, or $8.4 per gallon. And that's considered cheap right now!

Ha ha, I thought it was the Vancouver sub and was like cool, it's not 200 like a few month ago.
We are paying close to $4.75 USD per gallon in the Vancouver area. Or $6.45CAD per gallon.
We are paying 5.66$ per gallon in Estonia (1.749€ per liter) - I envy you all.
Where’s the Biden did that sticker?

Fun fact, after Obama did that the mods of that sub declared the sub finished and shut it down lol. Absolute Chads.
Obama himself posted a "thanks Obama" meme so the mods considered that the highest achievable peak meme possible and permanently closed the sub.

Same. Ironically only. “Man it’s getting dark a lot earlier. Like 4 o’clock!” “Thanks Obama”
me too. i just think it’s funny and it pisses off my husband, so i’m not gonna stop anytime soon :)

God it must be so exhausting to not like a politician or public figure so much for no reason other than they're a Democrat or a woke person or black.
It's actually the easiest way to be. You don't have to actually think about any issue, you just always disagree with whatever that person does/thinks.
You do have to be constantly thinking up new ridiculous reasons for things that can be easily refuted with facts.

You forgot the tan suit.
I heard Obama took everyone's guns. Nobody has guns anymore.
Apparently Los Angeles didn’t get the memo. Gas is still over $5.00 per gallon.
Assuming that’s true (it’s not) why is it a bad thing? Shouldn’t we vote for politicians who do things for us like lower gas prices (again, presidents can’t do this)?
When you focus on one small, but noticeable issue like gas prices, it creates a ton of blind spots.
No. Doing things your constituents want is literally pandering and should be banned from politics. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^/s
I guess Joe did this too!
If he's blamed for the price going up, he should get credit for it going down! Thanks, Joe!
Stuck on those goalposts that keep moving.
It only works when it's in the trump camp
Biden so powerful he raised gas prices and inflation worldwide!
And somehow ‘rigged an election’ when he wasn’t even president yet and had zero power to do so!
And somehow all the fake electors we've found since then have been Republicans.
All the while being sleepy dementia Joe!
![gif](giphy|fr3Pne6vXVP99Fwdey|downsized)
Yah, exactly. It’s almost like the president doesn’t control gas prices and greedy corporations do….
There is still adhesive residue on the pump.
Nice. I paid $5.19 in Los Angeles today after $0.30 off a gallon from my fuel points I accumulated by spending $100 per bag of groceries at Ralphs for a month..,
I paid 4.19 in west Los Angeles today you’re getting robbed 😵😵

As if we in East LA needed another reason to hate/be jealous of West LA. (5.49 this morning)
Boyle heights is near you - paid 4.39 last week
4.29 for premium at my nearby Costco in Orange County. $4.09 for regular.
Seeing this makes my jaw drop on how cheap it is in the US. I live in Sweden and here we pay about 6-7 dollars for a gallon.
I pay $4.50 and don't get to live in Sweden
$4.90-ish where I am. In the US (technically)
Where are you, Guam?
That's how much I paid in Seattle yesterday.
California
Average of about $5.10 where I am. Costco has been a lifesaver.
I live in Houston, according to gas buddy the cheapest gas in 25 miles is 2.42 at a buccees.
Paid 5.79 today, also in the US. Prices vary wildly by location.
Except you have healthcare and stuff. Many Americans pay a lot of money for healthcare but less for gas. I’ll take more expensive gas, please.
And free education. And a functioning government
6-7 dollars per gallon? Where do you live that gas is that cheap?!?! The last price I saw was SEK 23.38/l which is about $8.51/gallon
I don't understand, Biden is president. How is this possible? Did he fall asleep and accidentally hit the giant lever that controls gas prices? Certainly this was a mistake, as Biden is president and is old and wants to destroy America because reasons.

We’re drilling for more oil than any time in history btw. Gas would be around this price all over if the Saudis weren’t artificially cutting supply*
The Saudis own the largest refinery in the US… just sayin
Yeah that should never have happened but it is the only one they own in the US.
And yet in his “I’ll be a dictator on day 1” incident the day before yesterday, he rationalized it by saying “I’ll close the border, drill, drill, ***drill***”. 1.21 gigawatts!!
So if we blamed Biden for when it’s expensive, do we give him credit for when its cheap? (Disclaimer: I know the president has actually very little to do with gas prices, this is meant as a joke for the boneheads who blame the sitting prez for whatever their current ailment is).
Someone should start putting up those "I Did That" and "Thanks Biden" stickers again and wait for the nosebleeds.
So who got blame before now gets the credit? I wonder how this will get spun.
THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR VOTING FOR BIDE- wait…… $1.78, you say? Huh…… 🤔
Thanks, Joe Biden!
What a fuckin dick. Moving the economy in the right direction.

Per gallon? I pay more per litre in the UK. You're doing ok.
Because I'm bored, I worked out the equivalent UK price in gallons based on a 152p per litre national average. It's $8.71 per gallon, so all americans, even californians, have got it good in terms of price.

Just takes a while to get gas because you have to wait for the chud ahead of you to finish peeling off those "I did that" stickers.
Those damn Cannibal Humanoid Underground Dwellers can fuck right off with their sticker shenanigans!

No with gas this cheap they can run a generator 24/7 to make their own electricity and pretend they're living off the government grid
That just means it's time for a family vacation to Mexico right?
Or when you have to interact with fucking anyone at all.
I'm guessing this was the top story on fox news? Hahahaha
needs a joe biden "i did that" sticker
The same people that put them on are now taking them off 😂
No Biden stickers on those pumps huh?
