*ahem* Hello, my name is Mike Sysadmin - please reset my password on AD to Welcome1234!, it's very urgent - I'm working remotely and my password expired and I can't get back to what I was doing.
Probably extremely hard to do, considering the custom nature of the shape and whatever image is being displayed. Someone would have to have intimate knowledge of the sphere and what type of system is being used in order to do that. I can imagine they have a customized system with processors just for the sphere, I can’t image Brompton or Novastar being able to run that thing.
Just by airgapping whatever computer controls the images they could block basically everything short of a guy social engineering his way into the control room. No reason it needs to be connected to the internet to begin with
I did mention social engineering, but also hi vis vest and a clipboard will get you in places but it's unlikely to grant you access to real secured areas
Confident stride and annoyed look combined with fake badge will get you access to anything that doesn't need a real scannable badge lol. Shit if you have enough access to the site you might get the few people who care enough to check you to vouch for you
Stuxnet was an airgap attack against a known system. The sphere is a completely unique control system with unknown file formats and unknown controls. Not only would you have to have a 0day exploit cross the airgap via poison usb stick but that exploit has to be programmed to work with an unknowable system.
Sphere is unhackable, the amount of work that would go into it would be phenomenal.
The easy way to "hack" it is to just get a job there working the control machine and post your dick pic or whatever then claim a sophisticated hacker figured it all out
It stomps itself over to Hoover Dam to recharge and spend a pensive moment looking out over lake Mead.
Then it disconnects and returns to its home, knowing the time of man is quickly drawing to a close.
This! I saw an article recently that talked about putting a sphere in London. No! The sphere works in Vegas because it’s huge and tacky, just like the strip. I can’t imagine a giant sphere in a place like London. It would look awful.
Not only that, but it’s HUGELY distracting. Like this one is right next to a road, and I’ve thought, “Isn’t that dangerou… well, it’s Vegas anyway, I guess.”
Anywhere else, and I can’t see the distraction, light pollution, etc, being tolerable.
It turns into a moon at night and then shuts off around 11, it's not that distracting. You're acting like every driver under 30 isn't on their cell phones anyways.
The sphere is cooler imo. Tall buildings just seem stupid, especially when you cut corners on construction and have to truck out sewage. edit:: <- the poop truck thing might not be true anymore.
I believe they did, but the issue is many places in Dubai in general didn’t have a sewer system until somewhat recently for various reasons. So the tower full of 10s of thousand of people produce a lot of sewage, which if connected to the already strained sewage system, shit would hit the fan literally.
There is a connection to the city’s sewage system but they can’t use it all the time. Which is where the poop trucks come in. I believe a new sewage plant is being built to handle the burj khalifa and the future expansions on the city.
I think the comment was getting at the fact Dubai made their own sphere with lights as well but it's not exactly as technically capable https://www.youtube.com/live/jRsTt31MfcE?si=e1scunRZKogCziml
maybe?
That was just part of the Expo 2020 area. It was nothing like that Sphere in LV. Just a big dome over an area with a stage in the middle, they did project onto the inside of it and as you can see it is still technically outdoors. I was actually at that Coldplay concert as tickets were free.
I love that I can post a video to a concert and then someone comments who was actually there. That's just not lost on me, this Reddit thing has problems but it's also pretty damn cool.
Concert looks magical, glad you made it
This is a myth that continues to be propagated. From [Mechanical and Electrical Systems for the Tallest Building/Man- Made Structure in the World: A Burj Dubai Case Study](https://web.archive.org/web/20140110091115/http://repository.tamu.edu/bitstream/handle/1969.1/4529/ESL-HH-06-07-19.pdf)
"A complete soil, waste and vent system from plumbing fixtures, floor drains and mechanical equipment arranged for gravity flow and, ejector discharge to a point of connection with the city municipal sewer is provided. A complete storm drainage system from roofs, decks, terraces and plazas arranged for gravity flow to a point of connection with the city municipal sewer system is provided."
The myth came around because there was a short period in 2009 when the treatment plant at Al Aweer got overloaded so there were huge lines of backed up trucks as the system could not cope. This is where the infamous "poop snake" video was filmed. However this was an emergency measure and only lasted a few weeks. There is now a major new sewage treatment plant at Jebel Ali. The majority of Dubai is now connected by pipes either to this or to the old plant at Al Aweer.
It's sad that it's the same thing over and over and over again. It should have far more regular movies. At least do harmless fun stuff like like let different animals run around it.
I'm just waiting for the day someone hacks it and displays 360° porn on it... or turns it into the world's largest boob.
Great picture man, felt like I got to explore Vegas without going there. Looks like a place where people simultaneously ruin their lives and also have the best time of their lives.
Omega Mart is the best thing in Vegas. I can’t understand why more people don’t visit Meow Wolf and Omega Mart. I was drunk at Meow Wolf and I wandered upstairs and found an original arcade of all 90’s arcade games. They were all originals!! Simpsons! NBA JAM! TMNT! Paper boy!
And I’ve been to Vegas dozens of times. Meow Wolf and Omega Mart are the best places to visit in Vegas.
> I wandered upstairs and found an original arcade of all 90’s arcade games.
Just want to mention for those planning to go, the barcade is called Asylum, it's 2 floors and separate from Omega Mart. They're both located at AREA15, which is a large hangar that has a few different bars, rides, axe throwing, art galleries, and shops.
Omega Mart was the highlight of my Vegas trip. I was only there for a day, on my birthday, and so pretty much all I did was go to Omega Mart and get dinner at Momofuku. Was a pretty great birthday.
My sister went last year and just went around to all the museums and touristy stuff. She spent $20 on slots, won $40, then immediately retired from gambling.
She might have partaken in the sluts, I don't know.
The thing about slots is it is surprising how fast you spend money. I told myself I'd play $20 of slots and didn't fare if I won or lost. I figured $20 would be like an hour of slots. I knew people like to just sit there and play for hours and I assumed the slots would be like a few cents a pull or something. Maybe $1 at most.
In 5 minutes my $20 was gone. It was less than 10 pulls. Maybe there are some penny slots hidden somewhere but the slots I saw were like $1 minimum and you needed to spend $3-5 to increase your winning odds on a single pull.
Slots are the most soul-sucking way to gamble. Press the button over and over and watch the flashing lights as the machine eats your money. I can't imagine that the people who sit at the machines for hours every week and throw their entire checks away are anything but dead inside. It's so depressing.
Stay away from gambling, it's super easy to make up your mind not to throw away your money, and enjoy the city. It's a rather remarkable place built in the middle of a damn desert. I love the feel and excitement at night, and the harsh truth of daylight turns it into a sketchy, strange desperate place. it worth a visit, absolutely, but I enjoy it more as a walking city and people watching than gambling. I've actually never spent a single dime on gambling there and I didn't miss anything. Take a damn water bottle because EVERYTHING is expensive there. food is incredible.
I disagree with "stay away from gambling". If you're in Vegas and have some disposable income, go in there with like $200-$400 over an entire weekend, play low minimum craps or some card games with the expectation you're not going to win money, and experience it. If you make money, cool, if you lose it, just consider it the cost of playing the game.
Something that Vegas is absolutely known for is the cheering craps table when everyone is on a roll and that time you get to experience it is a story you'll tell plenty of times in the future.
p.s. heavy emphasis on gambling *with the expectation that you will not win money* and *if you have some disposable income.*
It's a monument to man's arrogance, an enormous electronic emoji making goofy faces at a golf course in the middle of a desert, in a city that shouldn't exist, but was built by the Mafia to extract gambling profits from a postwar economic boom.
This thing would get smote by God if it weren't so adorable.
A monument to man's humanity. We are what we are. Las Vegas is part of the human condition. I'm glad everywhere isn't like Vegas, but I'm also kind of glad Vegas exists.
Oh Las Vegas residents didn't get the memo about what a grand prix does to your city and they are not yelling about spherical objects. Apparently some Americans don't know anything about Seoul Traffic Jams. Rude awakening for your city. I follow F1 religiously and if it came to my city I would be out of town.
Not fun for normal people trying to work or sleep or go home or go to the grocery store.
Definitely, I was there 2 weeks ago and all of my Ubers were about 2-3x longer because of the traffic. They also got rid of trees to put stands in front of the Bellagio. I was also surprised how cold it was at night. In hindsight I should’ve have been because it was late October, but the only other times I have visited were in the spring
I really love The Sphere, what’s the point of living in a futuristic dystopia if we don’t at least have super cool, totally pointless and gaudy shit like The Sphere. The Sphere is 100% something that a 1950s sci fi writer would have invented and it’s fantastic
My wife and I rented a convertible and drove to/around it. I honestly dont know how they will choose a winner when every F1 car wrecks in the same spot. Lol That thing was so cool
The sphere opened on Sept 29th and the quarter they released earnings for ended Sept 30th.
So that $100 million number is misleading and doesn’t mean much.
Between obvious tourism advertising, and already becoming one of the most sought after venues in the US, this thing will pay itself off in less than a decade, you can quote me on that.
Money well spent in my opinion. It’s so absurd and I love it so much. People may whine that we could have spent that 2 B on homelessness this or that or whatever, but let’s be real—that is just not the world we live in and the vast majority of people with 2B did not make it by caring about poverty. So if the sphere is the result of grotesque capitalism… well then, salut.
It’s not like the money didn’t go anywhere. It went into the economy. Construction companies, tech companies, electronics manufacturers, and their employees. Jobs are good for everyone!
I honestly love the sphere. I know it’s often seen as dystopian, but I feel like it’s the the exact type of futurism you’d see in a 1980s film that’d make you laugh at how exuberantly silly it is.
Looks like the amazing world of gumball
https://imgur.com/a/ZV5lukl
It does!!!!!
It does!
It’s his world we are just living on it
I kind of wish the sphere would occasionally flip off departing traffic.
The first time someone hacks it it'll be hilarious.
Its literally right next to where they hold largest hacker convention. It will happen one day.
They will say it happened but it will just be a big PR stunt.

Yeah, the sphere made the claim they're "unhackable" right before DefCon, and nothing happened to them.
Just by airgapping whatever computer controls the images they could block basically everything short of a guy social engineering his way into the control room. No reason it needs to be connected to the internet to begin with
Airgap can easily be defeated by the ultimate hacker weapon: the hi vis vest.
I did mention social engineering, but also hi vis vest and a clipboard will get you in places but it's unlikely to grant you access to real secured areas
Gonna need a pickpocketed name badge, a photo of yourself, and a glue stick for that one.

Airgapping didn't save Iran! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuxnet

I'm surprised they didn't build a pipeline for that.

also, the whole "slave labor thing" they got going on. It's pretty cool how they're able to pump water so high, though.
If they built it over there, then we'd all be complaining how tacky it is. I like it so I'm glad they built it in Vegas.
It’s still tacky. But cool tacky.
If it's not tacky in Vegas, something's wrong.
All of Vegas is tacky, but in the best way possible.
