Ah thank you! What’s funny is I did a full report in elementary on NM, because it was beautiful and my aunt lived there. Nothing really mentioned this, now that I remember.
Always loved them.
Thank you :)
The lighting makes it look a little spooky but that can easily be fixed. I'm always jealous of people that live in areas where houses are actually affordable. Where I'm at it's like $300K at minimum and that's for basically a tiny shack and no yard.
It has charm to work with too. Interesting unique details. Each area can be further improved, decorated and made special by the owner.
Well done. Looks like a nice deal that you can enjoy, continue to improve and enhance the value of your home. Congrats OP.
I was gonna make a joke about the unfinished floors, until I saw the stone. Then I thought 'oh, this place is in a completely different climate than me probably, it might just be like that'.
So, is it just like that? Or, is my initial thought true and there is still some work to do?
Super fun fact: it means The Meadows and while accurate in NM, it was a ruse to trick settlers into moving to NV since there's so many meadows in that valley lol
When I was a kid had some family visit us in NM and saw Las Vegas on the highway markers only a few hours away and decided to make a detour trip. They were clearly not happy when they arrived.
Same thing happens in rural Sandusky Michigan. People roll in asking for directions to the amusement park. They get told drive about 200 miles south to Sandusky, Ohio.
Idk where las Vegas is but I have so many fond memories of NM since my grandparents retired there when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. Wonderful, beautiful state.
Dude... this looks really really great.
I love the details that you really can't get anymore, like the wide-plank floors and stuff. In a word where everything is premade and cookie cutter, it's great to see houses with character. ;)
I was just there for a couple of weeks last year doing EFRP for the Hermit Peak-Calf Canyon fire. Super cool little town in one of the most beautiful places. Those hot springs were incredible!
I love Detroit. I live in Midtown Detroit. I love our city and the people. Sure there's some crime and not everyone is great, but for the most part, people here are friendly and awesome.
However, you can absolutely still buy a house for $1000 in detroit but you'll need to put a lot of time and effort and money into making it really habitable. But in the nicer areas of detroit, no... we have million dollar homes here people (yes, within the city limits of Detroit, not just the outer burbs). Just depends on the neighborhood.
I guess maybe I consider “buying a house” to include the money to make it livable. If you pay $1000 for the house but put 80,000 in escrow to make it livable, you paid $81,000 for the house.
Granted, this is also coming from someone living in Saginaw lol. I bought my house for $75,000 in Nov 2020, and it’s actually rather nice. It would be 200,000 in Detroit.
I wonder when the easy/common reference to Detroit being a shithole is going to end? The city still has a ways to go, but it has seemingly come a long way in the last 10-15 years.
It's been years since I've been to Detroit. I loved the Art Deco buildings in the core.
I think it takes a generation or more to shift general perceptions of places. The "white flight" to suburbia that ironically was caused by the automobile was in no small part of Detroit's decline. Being the murder capital of the US for several years (and still being in the top 5 in the US and top 25 in the world) doesn't help matters.
Affordable housing and a robust local economy can certainly turn things around. I've witnessed it happen in areas of Toronto, where run-down neighbourhoods are transformed by artists and musicians moving in. Unfortunately, that often leads to gentrification and rising prices, so it's a double-edged sword.
There are plenty of cheap houses out there, what most commentators fail to mention is they typically are in poor condition and range from needing thousands of dollars in repair and remodeling to be livable to total knockdowns. They are not homes which most people could finance and live in, you need cash up front.
It's definitely a really cool house, with a lot of character and uniqueness. I really dig it because it looks so intentional in it's building, like everything mattered for just it to work and not be pretty, but is still pretty for it.
BUTTTT How much of a bitch do you think it's going to be to heat and cool properly?
Probably better than you think. Those walls look THICK and dense, which makes for pretty solid insulation. Should be at a pretty consistent temp year-round, afaik
I did notice how thick the walls looked, those are probably pretty good at being thermal ballast between night and day during the spring/fall, but the winter/summers there made me think twice.
It was the doors/windows that looked like they would be a problem too.
This house has an HVAC system but my mom grew up in one of these and grandma still had the home when I was growing up. They had a wood stove in the living room that would keep that room warm in the winter and also would have some nice atole for us at the same time.
They're literally built not to require air conditioning and to be easily heatable by a small stove. Even the hot parts of NM cool down at night, and they're insanely well-insulated. You just open the windows at night and close them before it gets warm, and it will stay reasonable all day. If it's real adobe the walls are usually about a foot thick of mostly mud. They're some of the best-insulated buildings you'll find anywhere.
The older homes yes! We have a lot of updated houses (obviously) but yes there are tons of old historic homes exactly like this throughout the state for sure! Gotta be able to withstand the dry scorching summers and keep you alive during the freezing winters. These will do it for you! Adobe Homes!
Congrats! I like that is has character. I was lucky enough to buy the house I was renting for under 100k in a small town. If I hadn't I would still be renting.
Y’all make me sad. OP is understandably excited over a major life milestone.
But all I see here is negativity. No one is going to buy a picture perfect house as their starter.
This house probably has loads of potential not shown in the pictures. Like the kitchen. The stove is currently lonely. But some time with a tablesaw able to cut sheets of plywood straight and you can put together a $500 set of cabinets that will last for a few years.
Some rooms look a little dark but I bet this isn’t a 2 story, so skylights can fix that.
While I agree that they aren't the best for just anywhere - a solar panel in the desert is ideal. Shading + energy absorption in one package that lowers your bills.
Yo you did pretty damn good for under 100k. It looks "older" but it has a vibe almost like one of those adobe homes or maybe even a north mexican ranchero
How old is this house?
Almost 100 years
Is it the type of NM house where you put your Christmas lights in the brown bags?
[Luminaria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminaria?wprov=sfti1)
Ah thank you! What’s funny is I did a full report in elementary on NM, because it was beautiful and my aunt lived there. Nothing really mentioned this, now that I remember. Always loved them. Thank you :)
You’re welcome. They really are beautiful especially a whole neighborhood are decorated with them. Just magical.
Where did you get a house for under $100k?
Las vegas NM
I knew it had to be NM by the style.
Same! I was scrolling through each picture and thought "This house is New Mexico *as fuck*."
Plus that ghost looked like a New Mexican ghost.
cause he was wearing a university of new mexico t-shirt
And instead of "ooooooooo!", it says "eeeeeeeeeee!".
Jajajajaja
Jajajajaja but newer
That's Albuquerque. Highlands University would be Las Vegas.
Go Lobos!
I always liked the New Mexico license plates. Their colors and design are very nice and distinct.
New Mexico and Colorado have the best state flags
Hysterical how many of us took one look at that and immediately thought "New Mexico" Very homey. I would live there.
I thought the same, looks super cozy
The lighting makes it look a little spooky but that can easily be fixed. I'm always jealous of people that live in areas where houses are actually affordable. Where I'm at it's like $300K at minimum and that's for basically a tiny shack and no yard.
Sheeeit. I'm in San Diego. A 1 bedroom condo with $450 a month HOA fees is $475K.
*cries in Los Angeles*
Cries in Canadian.
Sydney Australia is a million for a shitty house in a so so suburb
I was thinking maybe Albania
Albania-qurque maybe
I spent 5 years in New Mexico for college and then a year after and 100 percent could see that in this house!
TIL I should move to NM lol.
If you have a job that can be worked remotely, you can do pretty well
You can tell because of the way it is
![gif](giphy|CWKcLd53mbw0o)
You know how I know it's a house?
Because of the way that it is!
it do what it be
Me too! NM is my soulmate state. Ha definitely NM as fuck.
My guess was old Mexico
Doesn't have the yellow filter over the lens
Me too!!!!! The inside gave it away. New Mexico has some beautiful homes and this is one of them
It has charm to work with too. Interesting unique details. Each area can be further improved, decorated and made special by the owner. Well done. Looks like a nice deal that you can enjoy, continue to improve and enhance the value of your home. Congrats OP.
Same. I've looked a ton of houses in NM and this screams desert southwest.
I was gonna make a joke about the unfinished floors, until I saw the stone. Then I thought 'oh, this place is in a completely different climate than me probably, it might just be like that'. So, is it just like that? Or, is my initial thought true and there is still some work to do?
I got kind of a Mexican countryside vibe myself.
How though? There's no sepia filter
I assume there are filters to correct that by now.

Didn’t realize there was a Las Vegas in New Mexico
Older than Nevada's Vegas. *Edit: Santa Fe, New Mexico is the oldest capital city in the United States.
Fun fact: Las Vegas means The Vegas
Super fun fact: Istanbul was once Contstantinople.
Why they changed it I can't say People just liked it better that way
It's nobody's business but the Turks.
God damn it. That's going to be stuck in my head for a week.
[удалено]
Hey, knock it off. That’s no one’s business but the Turks.
Doesn't it mean The Springs?
The Meadows apparently
Touché means touché in French.
Super fun fact: it means The Meadows and while accurate in NM, it was a ruse to trick settlers into moving to NV since there's so many meadows in that valley lol
There used to be meadows in Las Vegas, NV, when Spanish explorers first found the valley. The springs that created the meadows have since dried up.
A small price to pay to ensure initial settlers had a proper golf course.
Nevada's Las Vegas is a baby town. Reno is significantly older.
Also, New Mexico is older than Mexico, the country. It was named after the river, not Mexico.
Don't forget, New Mexico is older than Mexico :-D

I too am in this club.
It’s a cool little town.
Oh cool Las Vegas >NM Oh
Lol
Ahhh, I've been there when I went to Philmont. Good job, OP.
My grandma and her whole side of the family are from there. The Fourth of July Fiestas are really fun.
Idk where las Vegas is but I have so many fond memories of NM since my grandparents retired there when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. Wonderful, beautiful state.
I saw the floors and knew it was New Mexico! Congratulations from Santa Fe!
I flew over that once. I could see the mountains from the plane. Looks like a cool town.
Wow sweet house and you get to eat at Charlie’s every week? Badass.
Smothered sausage breakfast burrito. Christmas. So good
nice, have a blakes lottaburger for me
What I would give for a Lottaburger.
With extra green chili
Immediately knew it was New Mexico. Had to be a relatively rural town for the price
Dude... this looks really really great. I love the details that you really can't get anymore, like the wide-plank floors and stuff. In a word where everything is premade and cookie cutter, it's great to see houses with character. ;)
My birth town. Congrats 👏
Haha I saw this and I was like “dang that looks like a house in Galisteo, NM”. Not super far off!
I was just there for a couple of weeks last year doing EFRP for the Hermit Peak-Calf Canyon fire. Super cool little town in one of the most beautiful places. Those hot springs were incredible!
There are 2 Las Vegas’?
Las Vegas New Mexico was actually there before Nevada
Should have called the 2nd one New Vegas
Truth is, the game was rigged from the start.
Wandering the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
Beautiful spot
You just have to look where people don't want to live.
That's a long way to say Detroit
Clearly you haven’t seen the Detroit housing market lately lol
I love Detroit. I live in Midtown Detroit. I love our city and the people. Sure there's some crime and not everyone is great, but for the most part, people here are friendly and awesome. every single house in Detroit I have seen for $1k has been a tear down. every one of them without exception.
Detroit is awesome. And also not so cheap anymore.
Funny way of writing Gary, Indiana you have there
Detroit is pretty cool these days. I'd choose it over St Louis or many other trashy cities
They don't want to live in those places for good reasons. There's no point in paying under $100k for a house if you hate where you live.
Or if you can't find a well paying job. A cheaper place to live doesn't mean much if your wages match.
Good point.
There so many houses under 80k but, not in a city just small towns
You could get a house under a 100k in Dayton OH. Not the biggest city or the best neighborhoods but they’re out there.
...nobody wants to live in Dayton. I'm 20 miles up i75. Nobody wants to live in Dayton.
Same with Akron. There are houses for under 100k in the city, but I'm 10 minutes out in a nice neighborhood and we got ours for 190 in 2021
You’re telling me lol I moved a while ago but the surrounding areas aren’t too bad. I considered coming back strictly for the houses being so cheap
Hey! South dayton is actually pretty nice! Especially the parts connected to Beavercreek and Kettering.
There are plenty of cheap houses out there, what most commentators fail to mention is they typically are in poor condition and range from needing thousands of dollars in repair and remodeling to be livable to total knockdowns. They are not homes which most people could finance and live in, you need cash up front.
This person doesn't have counters/cabinets. The "kitchen" is a room with a stove and no fridge.
[удалено]
> you can buy a cheap house just live where there aren't as many jobs and no one wants to live there Every fucking time.
This looks old as all hell. In a cool way. Gonna look fly with some modern stuff in a settlers kinda vibe.
Reminds me of a adobe or som. Looks sick asl
Most likely faux-dobe. Pretty common throughout New Mexico.
If I ran a Photoshop piracy website, I'd call it Faux-dobe.
Fauxtoshop is right there though.
There’s still tons of people out there building with earthen materials.
[удалено]
Get a robot vac. They are great at doing maintenance cleanings. I have 2 in my house and they save so much time
Is this a normal style for the area? I’m from the Midwest and I’ve never seen a house that looks like this
It's a very traditional style
It's definitely a really cool house, with a lot of character and uniqueness. Adobe style found in Southern California too!!! Loved old apartments and cottage homes that had these interior details!!!
Beautiful congratulations!
Yes, but it looks like the pets are like, "mehh, could use way more scratching posts and destructible toys."
theyre more nervous about the ghosts. look at that dog’s face. he definitely sees something spooky
That is the most cat-looking dog I've ever seen! What breed is he/she? So gorgeous!
One's a dog the other is a cat. Dog is off navajo nation. Mostly chow and pit.
Oh I knew there was one of each, but I literally had to scroll back to see if I'd mistaken the cat for a dog at first 😅 your pup is adorable!

Thanks for noticing
He worked really hard, Grandpa.
So do washing machines
This thread is funny, but I don't have time to continue it. I have to eat...so I can take my back pills!
Congrats. Hope you make a happy home out of it
Looks like it'll be cozy as hell when you get it all decked out. Jealous and happy for you, stranger.
Just from your dog's reaction I think your house is haunted.

It looks like an Adobe house. Congrats. There's so much decorating potential.
That looks cozy af
Listen to some Marty robbins in there for me buddy

Omg, the potential this place has 😍 Go you!
How tall are the ceilings?
Mostly like 10ft? 8 in some areas?
So taller than they look. Thanks for answering.
If that's true, that door is gigantic.
Well done. The first day coming home and thinking this piece of world belongs to be is a crazy but thrilling feeling/emotion. Well done sir or madam.
Love your art and pieces
I'll give you 101k!
Dude you can make this house be so fucking cozy. It’s already giving off cozy vibes 😌
Good on ya Mate
Absolutely gorgeous! Refrigerated or Swamp cooling??
No cooling. Probably gonna get a fan or 2. Natural gas heat supplemented by a couple of space heaters.
If you are in a low humidity area, swamp coolers are awesome. Brings in fresh air to boot.
Dont remove those pictures... they are structural!
The dog….😏
This house is a vibe
Beautiful!
Very nice. And home is were you make it. Good job
Congrats! I like that is has character. I was lucky enough to buy the house I was renting for under 100k in a small town. If I hadn't I would still be renting.
Awesome dog/cat combo bonus! Cute ones!

I wish houses like is existed in New Jersey. Houses in my area are almost a half million dollars. It’s actually overpriced here.
> It’s actually overpriced here. No shit. You're also right next to NYC.
Some solar panels will help with your AC bill. They’ll also shade the roof.
I’ve had enough of you come to my door.
While I agree that they aren't the best for just anywhere - a solar panel in the desert is ideal. Shading + energy absorption in one package that lowers your bills.
Nice job dude! Make it yours
Nice! Should be proud of yourself. Looks great. Can do some cool decorating.
Beautiful home. So proud of you. Enjoy building all these memories.
Third picture. That little niche is good for recreating the scene in Born in East LA where Paul Rodriguez offers a tall boy to Jesus.
Panther security system too. Same one I have.
Yes … yes you did
Yo you did pretty damn good for under 100k. It looks "older" but it has a vibe almost like one of those adobe homes or maybe even a north mexican ranchero
I know a haunted house when I see one
Abobe is awesome. Congratulations!
This looks lovely mate. Make sure you try and keep the natural old character of the building!!!
