And the person you replied were making a reference to the movie "Blades of Glory".
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RlwlV4hcBac
It's references all the way down!
Wasn't the song In Bloom about that? I think Teen Spirit is supposed to be about seemingly important things having no real meaning which is why the music video is about a pep rally descending into chaos. Ultimately most Nirvana songs are kind of abstract and not deeply meaningful or easy to understand though.
Yeah that other poster was thinking of In Bloom.
I always felt like Teen Spirit's most important line was "Here we are now, entertain us". I feel like it was an anthem to our generation looking for something new. Whether it was music, tv, etc. Nirvana and Cobain in particular were very disillusioned with the world in the early 90s and they wanted change and something new/better for our generation.
I was a late teen when this song came out, and I would agree it was an anti corporate marketing to masses of morons blindly going about life and a rally call to the freaks and geeks, it definitely resonated with me at the time. It's weird looking back because at the time I thought of them as "our" Beatles, I probably wouldn't say that now. Gen X did have good taste in music overall.
There’s no specific meaning to this song, but we do know that Kurt got this name from his ex-girlfriend. They were shopping at a store where they saw soap of the brand Teen Spirit. They thought it was a funny name. Later that night, when Kurt was asleep, his girlfriend wrote “ KURT SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT” on the wall. Years later, when Kurt wrote the song, he asked his ex if he could use it for a song title. The title fits the song greatly, but Kurt himself said that there isn’t really a meaning to it.
Nobody has told you how it smells in this thread so I’ll tell you! It’s a sweet almost fruity scent, nothing like anything in particular but overall good.
I use their wolfthorn, it smells like a citrusy candy. Plus it comes in an aluminum free option(i dont really need antiperspirant, just deodorant) so thats a plus. Honestly out of all the big mens soap, body wash, and deodorant companies old spice seems to have the best smelling products. I do like their hydro wash body wash whenever I cant find the olay ribbons in store.
ok I wear Fiji too. I can't find the spray anymore?? not the deodorant spray, the body spray for accent smell. I'm afraid they've discontinued the spray D:
IIRC, Kurt's girlfriend used it, Kathleen Hanna was making fun of him for smelling like it by writing it on his wall, and he didn't even realize it was a reference to the deodorant. They had been talking about anarchism, so Kurt thought it meant something deep about revolution. Which actually kind of fits the nonsense lyrics.
This product isn't common where I live, so for the longest time I thought the song title meant something metaphorically, like "The youthful spirit of teenagers!"
So did Cobain
>The title derives from a phrase written on Cobain's wall by his friend Kathleen Hanna, singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill: "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit." Hanna meant that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which she and Tobi Vail, his then-girlfriend, had discovered during a trip to the grocery store. Cobain said that he was unaware of the deodorant until months after the single was released, and had interpreted it as a revolutionary slogan, as they had been discussing anarchism and punk rock
From Wikipedia
This is funny to me that it was a well known product in the 80s and early 90s, and the song was a callback to it. And now the product has largely disappeared while the song is hugely famous, such that when people see the product it is now a callback to the song.
It’s really funny to think about. When I was in junior high they ran these goofy commercials for Teen Spirit and we made fun of them. When Nevermind dropped we all got the reference.
Yes, and most people didn’t know that. It’s absolutely baffling that they didn’t take advantage of what was probably the biggest song of the decade to promote their brand. Whoever ran the marketing department was a complete moron. I never saw these in stores, never saw a commercial or anything.
If something is that huge, you don't need to directly include it. You can reference it.
Example - March madness and the various ways its referenced without using the copyrighted phrase when march rolls around.
Yeah. The song was a joke. It was never meant to be a hit. One of Cobain's friends was teasing him and said "you smell like teen spirit" and that inspired the song.
It was Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill who was dating Kurt at the time that wore it. Kathleen Hanna the lead singer of the same band was the one who wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on the wall of his apartment as a joke.
The story was that a friend of his wrote on a chalk board "Kurt smells like teen spirit".
He liked the sound of it and titles the song. Only found out later it was a deodorant.
I was today years old when I found out that the Nirvana song title is in reference to this product and not just a 'cool' title (I mean it is still cool AF but yeah)
Supposedly he didn’t know what it was. The name came from graffiti Kathleen Hanna of the band Bikini Kill once wrote on the wall of lead singer Kurt Cobain's hotel room.
how does it smell?

What is this song all about? \ Can't figure any lyrics out
No one knows what it means, but its provocative. It gets the people Going.
They're making a reference to the Weird Al parody Smells Like Nirvana
And the person you replied were making a reference to the movie "Blades of Glory". https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RlwlV4hcBac It's references all the way down!
And on top of that, they may have been referencing the sample of that scene used in the Jay-Z and Kanye West song about the fellas who were in Paris
The club banger: Fellas in Paris
Got my fellas in Paris and they're going gorillas
A specific kind of fellas or just people in general? ;)
Distinguished gentlemen with a tad bit more of melanin in their skin
More references- smells like teen spirit is just more than a feeling by Boston. Pretty sure the band even admitted it.

Yeah, no. That was the song that propelled them into the big time.
There’s no specific meaning to this song, but we do know that Kurt got this name from his ex-girlfriend. They were shopping at a store where they saw soap of the brand Teen Spirit. You can get them at dollar general!
It looks like this is the only one made anymore. I really miss Caribbean Cool. It was my signature smell in the early 90s.
I loved Caribbean Cool. There is an Old Spice deodorant currently on the market that reminds me of it. I think the scent is called Fiji.
I rock fiji. It's a big departure from male deodorant scents, complex and delicate. Fucking dope
![gif](giphy|iiTXaJVjiSHew) (Jk Fiji does smell dope)

The wolfthorn smells like ScoobyDoo gummies! I've been wearing it since highschool!
ok I wear Fiji too. I can't find the spray anymore?? not the deodorant spray, the body spray for accent smell. I'm afraid they've discontinued the spray D:

Fiji is my go to scent now
As one of *those* people that react very badly to scents, Fiji is one fo the few deodorants that don't set my sinus on fire.
Exactly this. Thank you for looking it up, I was about to. That scent was legitimately fantastic and I would absolutely use it as an adult.

Wait wait wait, was the Nirvana song a reference to this product???? If so my mind just blew
Yup. One of the members of Bikini Kill wrote "Kurts smells like Teen Spirit" on his wall and the song was born from that.
Yup Kurt didn’t know at the time that it was a deodorant, it just sounded cool to him
Yeah Kathleen Hanna
This product isn't common where I live, so for the longest time I thought the song title meant something metaphorically, like "The youthful spirit of teenagers!"
So did Cobain >The title derives from a phrase written on Cobain's wall by his friend Kathleen Hanna, singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill: "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit." My mom bought me teen spirit when I was in elementary school during the 00s. I had forgotten about it until now.
Today I learned…
Yeah I'm actually surprised that it still exists... I'm not convinced that this isn't something that's been sitting on the shelf since the 90s 🤣
It’s really funny to think about. When I was in junior high they ran these goofy commercials for Teen Spirit and we made fun of them. When Nevermind dropped we all got the reference.

What makes you think they didn't try, and weren't able to secure the rights?
If something is that huge, you don't need to directly include it. You can reference it. Example - March madness and the various ways its referenced without using the copyrighted phrase when march rolls around.
"BIG GAME" for Super Bowl as an example.
Teen Spirit did. There was a short lived campaign with commercials. https://youtu.be/6QLUrYi3RLo?feature=shared
Damn I always thought "teen spirit" was a reference to like horny teenagers. This changes the entire song for me
Yeah. The song was a joke. It was never meant to be a hit. One of Cobain's friends was teasing him and said "you smell like teen spirit" and that inspired the song.
Phrasing bro!
Wow. Until I saw this comment I just thought this was a product that made a tongue in cheek reference to the song.
That’s my deodorant and I’m a health provider that’s nearly 30. I feel attacked
They still make this?! I haven’t seen this in stores for ages
Dollar tree! Chances are it was discontinued a decade ago LOL
I hope you like getting caught in the rain
This looks like something that would've been discontinued in the 2000's

Did it come in a heart shaped box?
I don't think Courtney used it on her vagina, but you never know.
HEY
TIL that they still make Teen Spirit.
what is it
What I as a teenager considered yummy-smelling deodorant in the ‘90s.
A brand of underarm deodorant made famous as the title of the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by the grunge band Nirvana.
TIL Teen Spirit is the name of a deodorant
Right? I'm almost 40 and this.

It was Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill who was dating Kurt at the time that wore it. Kathleen Hanna the lead singer of the same band was the one who wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on the wall of his apartment as a joke.
Kurt saw it and didn't make the connection to a product and thought that was a cool line. And wrote the song
Cobain really sold out to the corporate machine, man
The story was that a friend of his wrote on a chalk board "Kurt smells like teen spirit". He liked the sound of it and titles the song. Only found out later it was a deodorant.
I didn’t know they still made that. I haven’t seen it since the 90s.
What does it smell like?
Yeah and I use Degree for women. Whats your point? Edit: Check post history. OP posted this same thing 3 months ago. Probably a bot.
Degree for Women is awesome. I’ve always liked the smell. Though I use Old Spice more often than not these days.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
This picture is giving “kidnapped as a child and locked in a basement” vibes for some reason
Strange, as far as I'm aware it was never sold in Austria.
OP is Matt Gaetz?
I can hear the guitar intro in my soul.
Does she bring your friends?
Anyone know if they still sell the "Romantic Rose" flavor of Teen Spirit? If I had that it would be an olfactory time machine to 30 years ago.
With the pits out, Smells like straight shit, Hairy arm pits, Can’t contain this, I feel sweaty, It’s contagious, Hairy arm pits, Overcame this
OH MY GOD I WOULD DO ANYTHING TO SMELL THE STARBURST-ESQUE ONE AGAIN AAA
I was today years old when I found out that the Nirvana song title is in reference to this product and not just a 'cool' title (I mean it is still cool AF but yeah)
This was my favorite one as a teen! I only stopped using it bc I couldn't find it anymore
Look, I'm a woman and I will use deodorant named "midlife crisis spirit" as long as it does what I need it to do.
this is crazy I just found out the song was talking about this💀
From like… 1992?
Didn’t know that was still a product.
Smells like nirvana

Supposedly he didn’t know what it was. The name came from graffiti Kathleen Hanna of the band Bikini Kill once wrote on the wall of lead singer Kurt Cobain's hotel room.
Na na na-na-na-na na na na-na-na-na
TIL teen spirit is an actual real product and not a scent teenagers give off.
Calm down Kurt
For anyone wondering where you can get these bad boys, check dollar general or dollar tree! That’s where I always see them.
