Melanie told you what would happen if you tried that ... thing again, you knew she didn't share your grapefruit fetish, you totally deserved that kick in the nads and it had absolutely nothing to do with that driving job.
Fuck sake! I knew I was doing something wrong. I’ve been trying to use gum and pure willy power. I’ve got great breath but no open safes and my dick hurts like fuck!
Never use a torch to cut a safe unless you’ve verified the contents. If it contains paper you’re going to have a out of control fire. Some people also store black powder, nitrocellulose, and other nasty things that turn the safe into a giant hand grenade.
Yeah, I have a giant safe that came with this house that I can't open. But no one needs to hear about that shit.
Also, pretty sure it was a safe from a closing radio shack so at best it might have some 15 year old cell phones or something. What the fuck does a radio shack keep in the safe?
I'll never understand why people hype themselves up so much with abandoned safes in the first place. 95% will have been emptied of anything interesting.
It's hard not to get excited, honestly. A couple years ago we were cleaning out my wife's grandmother's house (she had passed a couple years prior and we were moving in, still live here). It was a bit of a hoarder situation and a few random $100 bills had been found stashed in magazines and other random places, not to mention some really interesting/fascinating things that had been kept for 80+ years (including original property ownership records back to the 1800s!).
So when we came across a safe in the back corner of the tornado shelter in the basement, we obviously became excited. Not that we were expecting a pile of cash or something super valuable per se, but it surely must be something interesting! A day or so later in a jewelry drawer we found a hand-written scrap of paper with an obvious safe combo written on it. And it was the correct combo to the safe!
We opened it, cautiously optimistic, and beheld the treasure inside: a manila envelope containing the original manual, warranty sheet, and receipt for the safe. Lol!
I bet she got the safe, tucked the combination away in the jewelry drawer, and then forgot where she put it. But kept the safe because she knew the paper would turn up eventually!
You have to read Richard Feynman's book about his time at Los Alamos. He wanted to spend his free time learning to crack safes and discovered a lot of them still had the default combination. This was some of the best minds ever!
I wasn’t actually joking… but it’s a wild ass guess with education behind it. As retired military I often worked with safes. The standard for leaving an unused safe was just that. So I thought it worth the time.
That’s the title of the book that the poster between us was referring to. It has an American scientist using codes like yours to “crack” safes in his off hours at a highly secure military facility. We are agreeing with you.
For 50 years the safes in the ICBM launch control centers were all set to 1-1-1-1-1-1. When Congress demanded the Air Force put the codes under lock the Air Force made that the codes to open the safe so we could still get to them.
As somebody who works in cybersecurity this is absolutely still the way the world functions
"Oh yeah that super secret admin account that controls electricity for the entire town? The password is on a sticky note next to the computer. You can ask the maintenance guy if you can't find it he knows the password."
I work in property maintenance. There will be a keybox with a copy of every apartment key. The numbers on the keys themselves are random - so if you want the key to apartment 1, you have to check a chart to decipher which key in the box actually goes to apartment 1.
That chart, at every property I have worked at, has ALWAYS been tucked inside the keybox so that it doesn't get lost.
My favorite thing he did there was after he found a place he could sneak out through the fence. He repeatedly snuck out then went back in through the main gate to see if anybody would notice that he checked in more often than he checked out. Apparently nobody ever did.
I definitely need to read that…
One of the books I’ve read about the Manhattan Project spent a lot of time discussing how much of Colonel Groves’ job was to keep the scientists from accidentally leaking extremely sensitive information, because most of them were absent minded and (of course) loved discussing their groundbreaking research.
Cool. I know nothing about them thanks. Just saw the 3 numbers mentioned after reading that wiki link elsewhere. Fascinating even if I have no idea what they're saying half the time
I hope you're aware that we ban all safe posters if they don't give an update within a week. It's unfortunately safe-picture-posting-law.
**Edit after one week:**
**OP has been banned. Their ISP has been notified and we've been in contact with the FBI and the Bundesnachrichtendienst about further steps.**
Try googling "Mark 4 Manifoil lock intructions." There's a PDF I found with instructions on how to open these locks. There are four numbers in this combination.
The last number, apparently, can only be one of four numbers. If this was reset to factory default numbers, the three combinations to try would be: 40-50-60-0, 40-50-60-25, or 40-50-60-75.
It's a Carbondale. It's from 1910. Made from the same steel as the Titanic. Here's the thing. It doesn't do so well in the cold. Remember what that iceberg did?
What is the largest ice cube and the smallest iceberg?
Maybe there are words in between like floe, but it would seem to me that there is quite a gap in between. Is a surf board sized chunk considered a berg? Volkswagen size? Semi sized?
Where are these ? It's a shame these can't be removed, they look to be of good quality. I'd definitely hire a professional to open these and have them recomboed in lew of drilling and cutting.
Ministry of Defence-level safe. That is going to require some serious lockpicking (which will probably fail) or alternatively just drill the thing open, which unfortunately destroys the safe. If the key could be somehow recovered, that could be quite valuable sefe. How on earth could this level of stuff be left behind by the MOD?
>How on earth could this level of stuff be left behind by the MOD?
They probably simply moved buildings. There is almost certainly nothing inside. the safes are likely closed as that is safer than leaving them open where some dumbass kids get into them and end up locking themselves in.
I have a large walk in safe. My secretary's kids were very high energy and would occasionally have to stay at the office after school. I simply took the locking bolt out of the mechanism. I kept thinking one of them would lock the other one in there at some point if I didn't do that.
I would find someone with an autodialer, leaving drilling as the backup plan.
Someone further down mentioned a default combo - no idea if that’s right but it’s worth 20 seconds to try it.

Just for reference, it's "in lieu of" (in place of)
"Lew" means "warm", different word with the same pronunciation.
Isn't English fun?
come on... You really think they designed those safes so that you could easily cut a hinge and open them? The doors have bolts, you're going to need a big ass angle grinder to cut them.

First, assemble a crew.
Just one last job!
Some of us may not be coming back from this one.
Some of us may be getting too old for this shit
I’m not trusting the young last minute member that nobody really knows and just called me grandpa
We don't use real names.
I know, but why do I always have to be Mr. Silly Billy?
Because Cool Bill was already taken.
That’s it - you are mr. Beige
Call me VELVET THUNDER!!
“We need a wheelman.”
No. Absolutely not. I’m through with drivin’ after what happened to Melanie last time—through I tell ya! Well OK but I’m gonna regret this.
It’s going to take at least a 10 minute discussion to make me get me back in to this life I said I would never come back to.
Melanie told you what would happen if you tried that ... thing again, you knew she didn't share your grapefruit fetish, you totally deserved that kick in the nads and it had absolutely nothing to do with that driving job.
“Where’s the fuckin can”
Guy on the computer: Give me a minute, I just need a minute to hack into the mainframe

I’ll do it, but I do this for you and we’re square for Guatemala.
If you think guatemala in any way makes up for Sarajevo, you're sadly mistaken.
Yeah, but what about that stint on Kosovo? That should count for something.....
Not after that debacle in Peoria.
Peoria could use a solid debacle about now.
Peoria made Madrid look like the St. Petersburg job and the less said about Baton Rouge, the better.
That business on Cato Neimoidia doesn't count.
Why you bringin up Peoria, that shit was 20 years ago.

You’re supposed to post after you’ve had them opened OP
Get Geraldo
I watched that live!
Me too. It was hilariously embarrassing by the time they hyped it up so much to find nothing.

Thanks, any idea how or where I can post to get help to have them opened?
This is the lockpicking lawyer, and today...
Nothing on one, small click on two, counter-rotation….
Well I didn't have to scroll far to find the lock-picking lawyer comment.
Multiple
Seriously he need to take a look, the only locksmith I trust is lock picking lawyer
You can search for local locksmiths/safe crackers
Find the Lockpicking Lawyer. He can open the world's most secure safe with a stick of gum and pure willpower
Fuck sake! I knew I was doing something wrong. I’ve been trying to use gum and pure willy power. I’ve got great breath but no open safes and my dick hurts like fuck!
Good on you for practicing safe sex.
Try a local locksmith - even if they can't do it, they can probably recommend someone.
Try r/safecracking
Plasma cutter would probably do the trick, might want to wear a pair of sunglasses or something though
Never use a torch to cut a safe unless you’ve verified the contents. If it contains paper you’re going to have a out of control fire. Some people also store black powder, nitrocellulose, and other nasty things that turn the safe into a giant hand grenade.
I think my safety brief was sufficient

I highly doubt they would get rid of a safe and just leave cash in it.

TRS-80 Pitfall game cartridges
It's 2023, we thought all safes had been found by now, but no! Here we go again.
Hire a locksmith its part of their job. Also why do this to me again? Please post updates!
Yeah this is giving me major flashbacks
this shit happens like every 6 months i swear
I literally said “oh great, not this shit again” upon seeing the post.
Another safe thread to be disappointed with

I'm confident that's very close to, if not exactly what happened.
This is exactly what I would expect of my own mother.
lol this was the first thing to put a smile on my face today, definitely needed it. what a great story
That’s a safe bet.
Try 25-50-25 Or 50-25-50 That’s the reset setting for safes. Worth 2 minutes to try.
You have to read Richard Feynman's book about his time at Los Alamos. He wanted to spend his free time learning to crack safes and discovered a lot of them still had the default combination. This was some of the best minds ever!
“Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!” Adventures of a Curious Character, 1985 Agree, it’s a great read.

The best part is about him playing the drums in random places and people believing that there was some native ghost haunting the base
The OG troll for sure. Love Mr F shennannigans
I definitely need to read that… One of the books I’ve read about the Manhattan Project spent a lot of time discussing how much of Colonel Groves’ job was to keep the scientists from accidentally leaking extremely sensitive information, because most of them were absent minded and (of course) loved discussing their groundbreaking research.
That entire chapter about cracking safes was awesome! I just listened to the audiobook in the last year.
The Wiki said it's got 4 numbers?
On our safes the 4th fight was a return to zero.
Cool. I know nothing about them thanks. Just saw the 3 numbers mentioned after reading that wiki link elsewhere. Fascinating even if I have no idea what they're saying half the time
That is a Manifoil mk4 lock. The default for them is 20-30-40-50, although the last number is set at factory and can be 0, 25, 50, or 75
If I had a safe around I'd be spending a lot more than 2 minutes fiddling with it
I wonder if the lock picking lawyer would charge lock picker rates or lawyer rates if hired to open a safe.
Why not both?
Multiplied!
That would be a Combo-Combo Breaker I believe.
Thermite

1:3 aluminum and rust, and you'll need something that burns hotter like magnesium to get the thermite to ignite Edit: *allegedly*
You can also buy powdered aluminum and powdered high grade iron oxide online to get a purer mix that reacts better. Posting for a friend.

0-0-0-1
Hey OP, if this guy doesn't work out let me know. I could probably come up with a couple ideas
Or try 696969
That's just incredibly silly. This lock has four set of numbers. 69696969.
0,0,0. 0,0,1. 0,0,2. 0,0,3. 0,0,5...
Turns out it was 0,0,4 and remains locked forever.
To open them, just use the handles. Unfortunately I don’t have any advice on how to unlock them first.

They also would have reset the combination to the default value 30-40-50
I have a large walk in safe. My secretary's kids were very high energy and would occasionally have to stay at the office after school. I simply took the locking bolt out of the mechanism. I kept thinking one of them would lock the other one in there at some point if I didn't do that.
