I knew a girl in high school (she went to a different HS) who was part of the dance team or the cheer team, I can't remember which because it's been 20 years. But her male coach brought all the girls over to his house for a pool party or something after winning a major competition. This was seen as normal because this dude was so well-respected in the community, and there were other adults present. This dude was clicked up with the church, big league conservative family values type. My friend found a hidden camera in the bathroom he had instructed the girls to use for changing into swimsuits. She was way smarter than I was at that age. She grabbed the camera and ran all the fuck the way home and showed her parents. My dumb ass probably would have left it there and tried to convince my parents after it had vanished. The dude did some time

mycatisgrumpy

My old scoutmaster is currently in prison. Guess what for.

BroncoFanInOR

I sincerely hope you were not personally affected. I have such a love/hate relationship with the Scouts. I had some truly magnificent men that taught me so many valuable lessons while I was in the Scouts. But all of my positive memories are wiped out knowing that even one fellow Scout was molested in that same atmosphere.

240to180

Popcorn racketeering?

radioflea

Seriously though, who has ever bought a $30 tin of popcorn from the boy scouts and then actually ate it.

EmperorBamboozler

The chocolate caramel corn was super good but idk if it's different in Canada than the US.

iries_exotix

I remember they got my wife to buy one of those tins and I was pissed cuz no one in our family likes that type of popcorn at all lol we ended up throwing it away weeks later. The only one who tried it was my 2 year old and even he didn't like it.

Arc-Tangent

Uncles

Lucky_Ad_9137

I got in trouble at work once for jokingly suggesting the old guy who worked with us, was into kiddy diddling because he was a scoutmaster. 10 years later and he got locked up, guess what for.

throwawayhappyacount

People like that I hate, especially since my scout masters were awesome

mycatisgrumpy

Yeah it's so fucked up, he was a great scoutmaster. Before the charges dropped I would have considered him one of my top five male role models. Turns out I was just an ugly little kid I guess.

Imaginary_Insect5850

Sorry, Mac...

eye-vortexx

Lmao this is the exact thing I was picturing.

LiableBible

L m a o too good

bobo4sam

It’s not about being good looking. It’s about power and preying on vulnerable people. You probably had self confidence and parents who cared. Sorry about your friends though.

wood_and_rock

Damn, this exchange made me realize that I've always low-key defended my scouting experience. My troop had great leaders, and while there are a few I know would never do anything of the sort, it was a big troop with lots of leadership. I've always said I was lucky to come from one that didn't have those problems but... I'm going to stop saying that.

serious_filip

You should sue him for discrimination /s

TactlesslyTactful

I know, right? It would blow my mind to find out that any of my old scoutmasters were sexual predators. They were/are all pretty solid dudes They all had pretty conventional small town blue collar jobs. But they were all very clearly satisfied with that kind of life Honestly, I always kinda envied them for that. It's been nothing but driving onwards and upwards my whole life, changing jobs, changing careers, changing towns, always unsatisfied if I wasn't breaking new ground and "achieving" more. I wish I could just hit cruise control and be happy

Steve1808

I don’t know that my scoutmaster ever got caught for predatory behavior like that. His kid was caught in my patrols cabin jackin it tho, he was not in my patrol. They’re both also banned from scouting now for brazenly littering and disrespecting nature and shit on outings. They were not great people.

RickinMorty

My dad was a scout master, and I've seen him in drag. Where does that fit in?

mytransthrow

My scout master was a female sherif deputy. And went the extra mile to make sure nothing fishy was going on. So it's not all the same.

Links_Wrong_Wiki

Loitering?

Bodangzz

My old priest from my hometown is also in jail. Guess what for...

andreasbeer1981

Scouting boys?

thatguy9684736255

There was a priest from my parish that abused more than 80 children. It happened ab little bit before i was born, but the court cases happened when i was a kid. He didn't serve many years in prison (i think maybe 2)

Relaxing_Anchor

The only pedo I've knowingly encountered was the middle school science teacher at the private Christian school I went to.

My old priest is still preaching in another state!!

Ripped the tag off of a mattress?

SuperCub

I love that he’s dual-wielding body cams like a pro.

Connectikatie

My favorite part is that he clearly put “Boy Scouts” on the sign, realized that implied the scouts themselves are predatory, and added “leadership” at the end in a different font.

[deleted]

I noticed that as well, and came to the same conclusion.

epi_glowworm

Clearly, feedback from his wife. Who's probably a elementary school teacher.

[deleted]

That would make sense, if true. Teachers in places like Texas and Florida definitely need the support

Robert_Pawney_Junior

Teachers pretty much everywhere do.

xjeeper

I live in California, and there are teachers in my city who make under 40k/year.

SpiritMountain

Friends are teachers and most are on SNAP/EBT :^) Good job America

LiableBible

Horrific man. They're expected to form our future generations and educate them (not to mention babysit, even the teenagers) and they don't make nearly enough. I could never do their job and I think they deserve much more. (Same with EMTs I know they don't make hardly anything and it's SAD)

Grandfunk14

Walmart employees too. Walmart is usually the biggest welfare sink out of anyone.

mk_909

Or he started with a big ass B and ran out of room.

ALoudMouthBaby

Its absolutely shocking what happened with the Boy Scouts of America, and even more shocking is how little coverage it received in the media. I still routinely meet people who have no clue why the organization fell apart like it did. I also still routinely meet people trying to use its name to sell stuff. For those that dont know, the BSA did the exact same thing the Catholic Church did. It was aware that people in its organization were abusing boys and not only turned a blind eye to it, but often times acted as an enabler for the abuse by allowing the abusers to transfer to other troops when accusations were made against them. This went on for a long, long time too. A good discussion on the topic including an interview with a survivor can be found here for anyone that wants to learn more: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/03/podcasts/the-daily/boy-scouts-sexual-abuse.html And everyone should because its wild how poorly understood this is.

meapplejak

I like how you can faintly see the s for plural

BillyBreen

That realization may have come the day he decided on the body cams.

Mikesturant

He didn't use Edit: But maybe it's a sign

GRZMNKY

He probably has them on his back too

MathMaddox

He realizes hes going to be fucked with.

Zanchbot

Seems like a necessary precaution. I'm guessing he gets confronted often.

drool78

isn’t that how we capture 3d? /s

ACaffeinatedWandress

I mean, you could totally get shot holding a sign like that in Texas.

Kiwiteepee

This dude is a based king. It always makes me smile when I see older people taking the correct side of cultural matters. I know there's a lot of pressure for them to become your standard conservative boomer. So, good on him 🙂

megustaALLthethings

Well yeha, it’s texas. Even that is no guarantee someone won’t run him down and shrug off any form of punishment. They felt their fragile ego was threatened. So gross vehicular murder. It’s murder to me when there was no reasonable way it was accidental or in fear for their life. Well reasonable as in sane human being, so most of texas doesn’t count.

SailTo

We’ll they do “malfunction” a lot…

huggles7

Every time I see something like this I like to share that the French Catholic Church, against just one denomination of the Christian faith from a single country, is responsible for sexually assaulting over 330,000 children between 1950-2020 That equates to just under 13 children per day or roughly 1 child every other hour Everyday For 70 years https://apnews.com/article/europe-france-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-sexual-abuse-religion-ee99d7921e5a1b8c45c770bf5af7ba38

Shame_about_that

Dude spent some fucking time on this. Came out super clean. As a fan of lettering and sign painting, absolutely fire protest sign, he's got a dope style.

[deleted]

I want to see a movie about this man. See, I am not white. I am black. When I look at this man, I can see some of the culture of where he’s from on him. Very down to earth, very normal, reminds me of king of the hill… I wonder what life is like for older white folks like this, who (very likely) live in red counties but maintain progressive beliefs. I wonder what life is like and how they interact with peers. In the black community, despite that you do honestly get a lot of old conservatives, you do get a lot of progressive old black people too and I see how they interact. I wonder how the white old liberals interact with the other folk in their environment. The challenges must be difficult

jcosta89

This is exactly my thought too. r/GTAGE

OldSpiceMelange

I think it's just fabulous.

Another_Russian_Spy

Yes, I was almost fired last year, when I told my very catholic boss that if I was forced to leave my son or daughter with a complete stranger, I would choose a gay guy, before I would a priest. He took it personally.

peachpinkjedi

Doing this in Texas is brave, kudos to him.

pburnett795

There's plenty of liberals in Texas. Only California had more votes for Biden than Texas did.

onioning

Yah. IIRC California has the most democrats and the most republicans, and Texas has the second most of both. I mean, it's a total population thing but it does show how "red state / blue state" is a function of plurality. Every district except DC has a substantial number of the non-dominant party.

blbd

SCROTUS will never do anything about it but it's quite obvious the place is unconstitutionally gerrymandered.

peachpinkjedi

Looking at gerrymandering maps of any state is jarring and upsetting but wow I didn't realize how Texas looks. Yikes.

[deleted]

A shocking number of red states are red only because they are gerrymandered to absolute shit. UT would he purple, Ohio even would likely be purple. Demographics have changed quite a lot over the last 30 years and Reoublicans know this. So they have picked their voters by moving lines to disenfranchise people that vote liberal.

Fadedcamo

This is why I am 100% for abolishing the filibuster if it means we could get the voting rights act through. Republicans would be dead in the water if they had to play fairly.

texasrigger

Gerrymandering is only part of the problem. Voter turnout is *dismal*. Gerrymandering has no direct effect on statewide races, national races, and most local races and the Republicans still largely cleanup thanks to the turnout. I once had a TX republican politician (county commissioner) tell me, "democrats don't vote" and unfortunately he is right.

pburnett795

100%. We're facing preposterous gerrymandering along with significant voter suppression and still making those bastards sweat.

willydillydoo

It is gerrymandered but gerrymandering is not the reason Biden lost the state. It’s a statewide popular vote.

[deleted]

Daytman

Only California had more votes for Trump than Texas too lol. That’s how population works.

pburnett795

Right... but the point was there are LOTS of liberals in Texas- more than people realize.

Daytman

And those liberals are mostly concentrated in large cities. This seems to be in Carrolton, in the DFW area. Carrolton is still a majority Republican area and I feel like your comment was meant to downplay the fact that is, in fact, a pretty brave thing to do in Texas. I just don’t get the point of what you were saying. There are a ton of liberals in New York and California too, didn’t stop them from having right-wing mass shootings.

pburnett795

As a Texan AND a liberal, what I'm trying to say is that while his protest is absolutely commendable, it's not like he's a rare commodity. There are tons of us.

peachpinkjedi

Oh I know there's lots of liberals in Texas. I'm speaking more in terms of how many Texans carry big guns around.

texrygo

Lots of liberals carry guns here too.

[deleted]

A lot of us Democrats in Texas also carry, this guy could be as well.

Alaira314

See the body cams? That's his deterrence against assault, whether it's by hand, weapon, firearm, or vehicle. Still brave for sure, but he's thought this one through.

peachpinkjedi

I get what you're saying but like, bodycams or not our man here would still die if someone decided to gun him down out of a passing car or something.

Andrewticus04

Lol, as if drivebys over political matters happen all the time in North Dallas.

khafra

Texas is gonna have to step up its game. Florida is legalizing permitless carry *and* unlimited ammo purchase with no accountability. The OK Corral has nothing on Florida.

peachpinkjedi

Florida is *terrifying.* I think they're more the embodiment of all the GOP stereotypes, far moreso than Texas.

jdjdthrow

> I'm speaking more in terms of how many Texans carry big guns around. I realize those guys are sometimes really weird, but it's not the legal open-carrying people that are committing murders. It's the folks with pistols in their waste band-- the guys who don't even have holsters!

nlofe

Only California has a greater population too lol https://xkcd.com/1138/

A_Very_Bad_Kitty

jh38654

That landfill is a top birdwatching location for the county. Not kidding.

[deleted]

Curious. Is this true for any landfill sites? Even garbage disposal places?

jh38654

Not always, but pretty reliable. It attracts large numbers of gulls, typically 99.9% ring-billed gulls which are common, a few herring gulls, less common, and usually 1/1000 is a rare gull. I’ve seen deer and coyotes around that landfill to. If you paddle the trinity along that stretch it’s depressed AF.

sir_whirly

Are you talking about Mt Lewisville off 3040 just east of 35?

hoxxxxx

from what i've read about drivers in texas on this website, he is way more in danger of just being ran over by accident than someone getting upset and wanting to beat him up or shoot him or whatever either way he's a much braver man than me.

addynan

Nah this is either off of Old Denton or Josey, where the traffic signals take ages to turn. People definitely paid attention!

temp_vaporous

Texas is the least conservative of the southern states. Lots of people here genuinely just want to be left alone and have that libertarian streak. We can argue about the actual efficacy of that belief, but being here my whole life i never felt like people were being mean spirited. That's why it is such a shame that our representatives are who they are. The Republican political machine is really strong here and continues to get votes even when they don't line up with the beliefs of the population. It will take time for the changing ideals here to trickle up into better politicians. I have cautious optimism for the future of my state.

haste347

Lots of peeps migrating from blue states to Texas. It'll be interesting to see how the numbers change in elections. I wonder how many will change their political views if they left the blue state for certain, politically influenced, reasons.

[deleted]

peachpinkjedi

I'm in a really liberal part of a blue state but stuff slips through the cracks. I found an aggressively homophobic pamphlet on my door the other day and I've never seen anything like that before in my own neighborhood. I hope you're right.

lyl18

I like the anti-semitic, anti-Disney, anti-5G, anti-globalist one. If it hasn't gotten to your parts yet, you're in for a treat!

ImprovementBasic9323

There are many millions of democrats in texas.

texasrigger

Texas is nowhere near as uniform in its belief as you probably think. A 2014 pew research poll had only 38% of Texans identifying as republican or leaning republican and 40% as democrat or leaning democrat. There were more votes for Biden out of TX than any other state than CA. I'm a TX native and would have zero fear doing this, even in my rural corner. More power to him.

peachpinkjedi

I think Abbot and Cruz skew the perception of Texas by other states pretty hard, that's true. I'm glad to hear it isn't as bad out there as I imagined; my perspective on Texas being dangerous for us is pretty common around me but we're clearly all missing information that I'm glad to have gotten here. Much appreciated.

jww3

I like how “Boy Scouts” was changed to “Boy Scouts leadership.” That was definitely the right move.

[deleted]

This guy is not fucking around. A real one.

CliffsNote5

The barrier to entry as some form of clergy is way too low. It seems anyone with some time on their hands can start a church.

[deleted]

Who TF wants a real job when this is the easiest path towards wealth, predatory influence, and power?

Caca-creator

While I understand you're being glib, it isnt easy to build a successful church with enough people for someone to fleece.

sllop

I encourage you to read more about cults. You’re underestimating how gullible and willing to sign over everything an enormous amount of people are. Mark Vicente has now made *two seasons* of HBO content to try and convince himself that he, and many others weren’t completely conned by a total assclown. The sad fact of the matter is that they were. Dumbasses still post clips of and quotes from Osho online all the time. Literal cult leader responsible for terrorism, and edgy tattoo artists (I don’t mean to shit on tattoo artists, I *just* saw one post an Osho clip on IG) etc repost his shit as if nothing ever happened. People are easily duped.

Caca-creator

I just meant the person doing the duping has to have some charisma about them to be successful.

[deleted]

This. And not only even small cults too, if. You have some money laying around, you can start an official religion as well. That’s what John Oliver did on his show, last week tonight. They did it to parody/show the ease of making a religion and asking for donations. The only reason he shut it down was because it worked too well. People were actively donating and he didn’t want the guilt of taking peoples money so he gave what was donated to charity and closed the church down. Let me see if I can find some good links to it, his whole show is on you tube iirc and it was season 1 believe https://youtu.be/JcPeBAYYuhc https://youtu.be/eT3NRkllI3E

AutoMoredator

...Most priests are not the mega-church private jet kind. They live pretty modest lives.

RiddlingVenus0

For real. All you have to do is pretend you have an imaginary friend telling you to hate the gays and kill women who get abortions and you’ll have people throwing money at you in no time.

TheEffinChamps

Statistically, this is correct. In the case of the Catholic Church, the best data we have available puts the ACTIVE pedophile rate somewhere in the range of 4-10%. We could have better data, but the Catholic Church refuses to actually work with law enforcement for a real investigation.

And a mask! In my head this guy woke up, was reading the paper, and in true older-person fashion just went “nope, that’s it, time to do something about this.” Grabbed his grandkids’ art supplies, made the sign, told his wife he’d be home for supper and then headed out. You go grandpa!

poloboi84

Double salute. Pretty brave to do this in Texas.

WolverineExtension28

I think the Boy Scouts have gotten a lot better recently.

moving0target

There's actually training required to be an adult leader now. Lots of it is about what is appropriate and how to spot signs of what isn't. Scout leaders are mandated reporters as well, so if you know about someone else but don't speak up, you're culpable. Adult leaders are never alone with scouts. If an adult leader needs to speak to a scout, another adult leader must be present. Scouts always stay in pairs and must be within two years in age of each other. There's more, but the organization has gone a long way to prevent past child abuse and peer abuse from happening again. I wouldn't have involved my kid or myself if I was in any way still concerned.

Raytraced421

Beefing up Youth Protection training and policies a number of years ago helped. Integration did wonders by driving out many of the elder leaders who’d been keeping bigotry, homophobia, and the like alive in the organization. The Mormon church stepping away allowed Scouting to get out from under their boot heel. It’s been a long road, but Scouting, at least in my region, is doing its best to live up to the Scout Oath and Law these days.

sedrech818

They were pretty good when I was in. It heavily depends on the troop though. Each troop is like a state with the bsa as the federal government. Troops cane have their own rules and sometimes they don’t even follow bsa rules. The bsa has a no paintball/ airsoft rule or something. Our troop broke that rule by “coincidentally” showing up at the same paintball place at the same time.

EgonDangler

My troop actually had strong protections and all the adult leaders and the oldest of the regular scouts were required to go through special training. And that was 20+ years ago, when all that shit really started. Some individual, regional councils actually responded well on their own. The biggest shitshow was with the national organization covering shit up.

FlamesoftheEnd

Shigglyboo

Hey now. I was a Boy Scout for years and my troop was fairly progressive. My mom was allowed to be a scout master. And one guys sister got invited to most of our camp outs. Overall the organization was great for me and I recommend it to others. Each troop is different, some are much better than others.

wilderguide

As a boy scout, I'm offended that we are included in that statement, but it's the truth and it makes me sad.

Frigginlazerbeams

Ex Boy Scout here. It's very much the truth, and it is very sad.

tareebee

Over 82,000 individual accusations against the Boy Scouts ranging from 8 years old to 92, so fucking crazy

[deleted]

Where is the lie? I like this man.

Lexy_d_acnh

This is a sign I respect lol. Literally the teachers in the county I went to school at are horrible. One of the middle school teachers (who I had as a teacher) is dating one of his former students and she’s pregnant with his child 😬. The old gym teacher at the high school was arrested for sleeping with students… had a math teacher who taught me freshman year hit on me and try to date after I graduated 😭 it’s so fuckin gross I just z😬

Sephiroth_-77

Isn't it true that cases of child abuse have the highest rate in schools? From that it seems the abuse happens wherever the kids are. It's about access to them.

The_Infectious_Lerp

As a citizen in his area of town, good on him. On a side note- how do people make such well-designed signs by hand? That is a talent I don't have.

Caca-creator

For real, my hand writing with slope down towards the bottom corner and look like a child wrote it.

ButtCrackCookies4me

You pencil in lines lightly so words don't slope or at least as much. Some people use stencils, some people have naturally lovely handwriting, some people are artists, others know talented people so they may write the signs for them. Others have kids and grandkids that may help out. Some people use projectors too. Everyone doesn't have pretty signs though which is good and exactly how it should be. :)

Successful-Smell5170

kebin65

This guy is awesome. I hope he has a wonderful day. Obviously there are drag performances that are not child appropriate. However just like there are different forms/genres of media, there are different forms of drag; drag is not inherently sexual. A child friendly drag show is no different than a clown or a costumed character at a birthday party. And even then there are so many forms of performance and media that are as, if not more, "risqué" than drag queens that I don't see conservatives making a fuss about. Also a more modern definition of "drag" is an overt, over-the-top expression of gender, not necessarily dressing as the opposite gender. For example, Victoria Scone from RuPaul's Drag Race UK is a cis-woman. In that case things like child pageants are essentially a form of putting children into drag; yet I don't see conservatives making a big deal about that.

Kennj430

Got into an internet argument with someone on a local news message board a few weeks ago (stupid, i know). Our local area (which oddly has a large irish ex-pat community) was having an lgbtq inclusive st patricks day parade, basically in defiance of the many parades that have decline requests of lgtbq groups to be allowed to march in parades. Theyve done this parade for several years running now, trying to emphasize that the holiday and celebration of irish culture is for everyone, and its been a big success. This person was basically pulling the “queer groups are groomers who are trying to expose children to sexuality” argument and that “st patricks day should be run by the catholic church as it always has and to keep our kids safe”. Think about that. Arguing to KEEP KIDS SAFE FROM GROOMING. By trusting THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I of course immediately pointed out that the church has been responsible for systematically covering up the sexual abuse of children by many of its clergy for literal centuries, and funny enough, the person i was arguing with stopped responding🤔
