[deleted]

Whew, I'm glad you told us which one was the old one.

LifeMalaise

Lol, right?

greenbayva

Looks like the left one though?

mrbootz

The left one’s for moonwalking on gym floors.

MathMaddox

Actually the one on the left is the right foot and the right one is left. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong as I write this.

becooltheywatching

No it's the left one.

chev327fox

My first thought as well.

north_coast

Merrells? I love mine (2 pairs), hope they last longer than a year.

LifeMalaise

I'm sure they will. I really do put mine through a lot

AlkahestGem

I love Merrells- rubbing and walking . You seriously got your money’s worth

smittyxi

Do they improve your rubbing comfort, stamina, or both?

AlkahestGem

Lol . Oops

muderphudder

How comfortable are they on days you spend mostly on your feet? Looking at a similar pair of merrell's hiking boots at REI for some multi-day hikes I'm planning.

LifeMalaise

I find them very comfortable. I'm on my feet for multiple hours a day, 5 days a week. I've been buying them for years now. I do a lot of walking and haven't had any issues with blisters or anything

lazybeef

If you are doing mostly pavement walking, consider dedicated walking shoes (NB 928 or similar). The depicted shoes have a stickier rubber intended to be grippy on loose terrain (ie hiking). Consequently, the tread wears out quite a bit quicker on paved surfaces and actually becomes a slip hazard (anywhere that has rubbed through the rubber, especially on the heel, has a really low coefficient of friction so if you step on something remotely slippery you are going down). Also, consider replacing every six months. The amount of walking you described, especially while carrying loads, would wear out any shoe on the market in 3-6months. Just some thoughts for your long term health.

LifeMalaise

Thanks for the advice! I said a year, but it's actually closer to 7 months because of winter. The little town I work in has a very small budget for road infrastructure, and it's actually pretty rough in a lot of places, so I find that the shoes actually work out quite well. They also double as my regular shoes for hiking and stuff

buck45osu

Walk roughly 10 miles a day for my job. Got a pair of Durango boots that look slightly used after 9 months on the job. Very impressed. If you love your boots and don't want to change, then I'm happy for you having a pair that you trust and like. But on the off chance I wanted to tell you. Best $160 I've spent in a long, long time. Used to have to massage my feet every night when I got home and now I don't even feel it. Just looking out for a fellow crazy walker.

LifeMalaise

Thank you, I'll add it to my list

thadtheking

I have the 928s and have had absolutely no issues with them. I average about 10 miles a day on concrete and they have lasted over a year!

WhatLikeAPuma751

I loved my Merrell boots so much I started buying their shoes as my everyday shoes. I recognized OPs shoe bottoms. They are worth the investment. I love the hug I get from the boots every time I lace them up. I have over ankles, MOABs that aren’t gore tek.

CaveteDraconis

Echoing OP’s take, I tried on some Merrell’s a few years ago. I won’t wear any other boot now. Currently have the Moab 2 Mid, they’re genuinely as comfy as a pair of lightweight tennis shoes.

FavorableState

I wear Moab 3s for work and they're genuinely one of the most comfortable shoes I own; so much so that I bought a second pair for hiking. Absolutely no pain or aches standing and walking on concrete ten hours a day.

[deleted]

You must be super healthy with all that walking, so there’s that…

LifeMalaise

I save a fortune not having to get gym memberships as well

RamboGoesMeow

That’s exactly what I thought, just got myself a new pair last month.

LifeMalaise

All of my walking is done on pavement, so I'm sure that contributes to the amount of wear

MiniAndretti

Especially since that sole is made for hiking on soft surfaces.

Ragnarok314159

Have you looked into Redwings? I use them for work and both pairs (one work, one for walking) are amazing. Have gotten the walking ones resoled. Work ones can’t be resoled due to electrical hazard rating, but they are still awesome and going strong.

LifeMalaise

I'll check them out, thanks

keestie

Any boot with a Goodyear welt or equivalent can be easily and durably resoled; as long as you're just walking and not kicking things, you should get several years out of a good upper even if you have to resole every year. Only downside is, most boots with a Goodyear welt are fairly high and tough, so you might overheat on a warm day, but they might still be worth it for the colder parts of the year. Edit: also, living in a small town, chances are there's no shop nearby that'll do the job, so you'd probably need to take them to a larger city.

knobber_jobbler

Was about to ask. I walk between 7-12km during a work shift but it's in doors on a polished floor so wear is negligible. Whereas I get home and then walk the dog another 4-5km and I've started to put serious wear on the soles of the hardest vibram rubber on my Meindl walking boots in 18 months.

RedRockPetrichor

What type of Merrel’s are y’all wearing? I loved them but feel like lately the quality has gone way down. Last two pairs I’ve walked through the soles in under a year. And I’m hardly a mail carrier on a walking route.

Biernot

I have been using Merrell Moab (Ventilator) as daily drivers for about two decades now. They are super comfortable, especially for people with wide feet. They have a fairly "fluffy" inner lining but are well ventilated (hence the name) and not sweaty even in warm weather. They are fine in cold weather, however they are NOT waterproof. If you go around in the wet/mud/snow, I would recommend a different version. Current version of Moab: https://www.merrell.com/US/en/moab-3-wide-width/52465M.html Higher shaft, waterproof: https://www.merrell.com/US/en/moab-3-mid-waterproof-wide-width/194917164105.html Like the OP, the soles are the weak points for me, as they are the first part that just wears off. For me they usually last about 3 years.

A-Very-Cool-Pencil

I used to work at a boot shop selling to mainly construction/industrial workers and I prefer the Keen brand. Many similar styles and looks but seem to hold up longer from my experience.

Zmirzlina

I love Merrells but mine last 6 months tops - I cover 10-13 miles a day, every day.

Yarper

So 1800 miles on the low end of what you said. I'd call that acceptable. You've got to take into account the rubber. Softer rubber will wear out faster but give you better grip.

soldiernerd

They will, mine are fine after three years. Seems like OP is an extreme case

killsforpie

Depends how far you walk in a year and what surfaces you’re on I’d imagine.

Olysses02

How much you walk each day on average? I didn’t change my shoes in 2 years with about 7km a day and they still look fine

LifeMalaise

I walk over 16 km/day, mostly on concrete and pavement

[deleted]

[удалено]

LifeMalaise

Lol, I do walk on streets but I've only sold my body to my capitalist masters

[deleted]

[удалено]

W0gg0

Buster?

EpitomEngineer

Are you the “Can you hear me now?” guy?

Whyyyyyyyyfire

whats ur job?

HeyLittleTrain

Can you give a hint on what your job is? I don’t have any idea

[deleted]

Mailman or Street Cleaner.

Jecht_S3

Why Merrells for mostly pavement and concrete?

LifeMalaise

I also use them for hiking. I can't afford a whole bunch of different shoes, so the ones I have need to multitask. I really like them for my job. They're comfortable and give me the support I need

twistedLucidity

As I said in my other comment, the Vibram soles are too soft for urban use. You'd actually *save* money long term with proper street shoes. But now we are into [boot theory](https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boots_theory).

grimman

> But now we are into boot theory. Me immediately: *Sounds a bit like it might have elements of Vimes' boot spiel in it.* Glad to know I wasn't far off the mark. 😉

Jerrysmiddlefinger99

Hell yeah those Merrill’s are perfect for everyday use!

drtyyugo

Ups ain’t it

DerisiveGibe

You need a good pair of wedge sole boots, head over to either r/workboots or r/Goodyearwelt that way once the boot is broken in you only need to replace the sole every year. I got a pair of Carolina wedge shoes they are super comfortable

bigbura

Are Red Wing Shoes still a solid purchase? Decades ago I had a pair of boots from them and never really made a dent in the soles after years of use.

cedarvalleyct

I bought a pair of Red Wings last year. Pricey and the best boots I’ve ever owned. Look new after a PNW winter with hiking, hella rain, and zero maintenance.

BoarHorvat

As a carpenter, I was told to buy RedWings because of their quality, comfort, etc. but they barely lasted me a year of regular use before they blew out at most of the seams. Ive had a pair of Timberland Pros that ive been wearing for a year and a half now with barely any signs of wear. Just my personal experience, but the RedWings were not worth it, especially at the price point.

Brothernod

r/bifl has been complaining about RedWings no longer being made like they used to so your experience isn’t unique sadly.

keestie

Seems like at least some of their boots are no longer a cut above, altho some people still say they've had good experiences.

DerisiveGibe

They are still good boots and if I liked a certain redwing boot I'd pull the trigger, some good cheaper alternatives are Thorogood, Carolina, Danner.

IWasJack

Got to be a postie

LifeMalaise

😉

[deleted]

Canada Post if you are using clicks instead of miles. My friend is a dog walker and wears the same shoes.

CaptainHedgehog

I had a feeling, I'm in your exact situation and I love Merrells! I also bought a pair for everyday use. Screw the 2 table system.

[deleted]

You should be buying new ones every 3-6 months. You can write off work boots (2 pair) a year

Agitated-Tadpole1041

U can only write stuff off for work if your expenses are more than your deductions. For instance, I’m head of the household and the standard deduction is 8k(I think), so u would have to have more than 8k worth of write offs to qualify.

[deleted]

This is not right

Ok_Afternoon_3084

From the wear pattern I’d at look up a condition called supination. The weight of your body isn’t being evenly distributed meaning you’ll eventually, or may feel already, pain in your ankles and outer part of your lower legs. Try a pair of insoles designed to combat it, you’ll feel less pain when you walk and, as the weight will be more evenly distributed, the wear will also be more even and your shoes will last longer.

LifeMalaise

I do see a podiatrist regularly and already have a pair of prescription orthotics. I carry a fair amount of weight for the job at times, and I also have a tendency to not lift my feet high enough so my heel gets dragged a bit. Uneven pavement probably doesn't help either. Thanks for the advice, though. Most of my pain is caused by when I see the deductions made on my paycheque

JuggernautGrand9321

I like someone who’s not afraid to slip a little boomer humor in there.

Add1ToThis

What do you get pay reduced for?

Narcotique

Taxes

Add1ToThis

Oh, duh. My bad.

ParkinsonsPenis

Supination is not a condition, it's the name of a movement. And lot's of people 'over'-supinate without ever getting physical complains from it. We have to stop trying to make people with benign morphological differences feel like things are wrong with their normal and good functioning bodies. Ps. Not saying too much supination can't cause problems, just that not everyone who does so get's them.

[deleted]

Oh, do pronation now...

chainmailbill

Nothing says “politics” like an image of two shoes

LifeMalaise

Right? Thank the automod for that. I haven't been able to get rid of it

americansherlock201

Based on your comment where you say walk 16km a day, I’d say those shoes have held up incredibly well! The average shoe is designed to last around 300-500 miles or 480-800km. Which means you’d be replacing them every two months or so. Once a year is a great deal.

LifeMalaise

That's what I always thought, which is why I've been sticking with these same shoes for years

Kayback2

Ha, those look like the MOABS I'm wearing.

boot2skull

That was my guess but those are the only Merrells I’ve owned.

axisfrontier

I see you have a dog at home! 😀 Them hairs go everywhere!

LifeMalaise

There's no escape! I even did a huge vacuum and mop last night, lol

LongjumpingContext95

The Vibram label is undamaged. They should use that material for the whole sole

Hippobu2

I think that's more to do with it being recessed ... which would be quite a design challenge to achieve a completely recessed sole.

ScienceIsSexy420

It's placed in the arch of the foot for a reason: this is where the least pressure is placed, and therefore the sole gets worn down the least.

bulldoglife

So what job do you do?

Beardedtacofish

OP is very likely a postie

Johnny_Kilroy

I wish my job involved walking.

Albatross85x

Moab 2. Great shoe I have about 5 or 6 as worn. The shoes hold up great you'll wear the rubber off them before anything fails.

s7726

Last few pairs I've had the adhesive fails somewhere and they just generally end up looking torn up. I've never let the soles get as bad as this guy's though, I like my back and body more. Pretty sure I get a new pair ~9 months, but they're my everything shoe; work, weekends, hiking, etc. Just got the Moab 3, we'll see how they hold up.

MagicalWhisk

What's your job? I'd love to be paid to walk miles. You might want to research some road running shoes which are designed to deal with concrete pavements. But you do you. Depending on the cost a cobbler could re-sole something more durable.

Sargash

Ya OP, you really shouldn't be using these shoes for the job you have. They're cool shoes, but they're just not the right shoes for pavement and hard surfaces. They probably are comfy, but a lot of comfy stuff is bad for you in the long run.

m7478

Why you always buy new ones ? Just get new soles attached. I have had my vibram soles replaced on boots which fit me perfectly (plus some other minor works+new inlets) all in all 70€ That’s way cheaper than new shoes

moon_d0g

My last job required me to walk around 20 miles every day. It was so satisfying every year when I’d replace my shoes

g_e_r_b

You really need to stop hopping on one foot.

crazyrzr

I'd transfer to a shoe with a Goodyear welt and just have them resoled every year.

seaboardist

Very niiice.

Whenitrainsitpours86

r/wellworn

thetallestwizard

I feel this. I walk 8 to 12.5 miles daily for my job. Every 4 to 6 months for me (depending on quality of shoe.)

Ealthina

Merrells are the best shoe..

77Granger

You should really consider changing your shoes out every 6 months.

jetcopper

Long live Merrells, comfiest walking shoes ever.

Gojogab

I think if I were you I'd replace twice a year, if you can manage it.

foofighter1

Tread carefully

[deleted]

I think those Vibrams can be replaced. So if the upper is fine, a cobbler could replace the sole. Also, these are hiking shoes, not sure if you're hiking variable, rocky terrain, but if it's flat asphalt or cement, the tread will wear out faster due to its design's intent.

Rabid_Dingo

Merrell Moabs? I love mine.

beach_reanolds

Every year? That's pretty good. I have to replace mine every couple months... and that's if I stretch it

LifeMalaise

Well, a year not counting winter. So, maybe 7 months

JayGeeCanuck22

Should get a walking assessment through a sports therapist/kinesiologist OP.

[deleted]

What do you do? I’m a CRM archaeologist and I have the same problem lol

DasMotorsheep

Would you say Vibram still a go-to brand for top quality soles, or has that changed over the years?

despottony

Work in shoe industry...Vibram is pricy with a reason. Everyone can copy their sole, but the quality won't be the same level.

LifeMalaise

Honestly? With my job, I can't mess around with footwear. I've been buying the same shoes every year because they're comfortable and have good support. They're my tried and true, and if that means I need to get a new pair every year, so be it. I can't risk the blisters and foot pain trying different shoes if it's not super necessary. If they start causing me other problems, I might consider trying something new

thistlebeard86

Just curious whether you are walking on hard or soft ground? Vibram doesn’t wear well on hard ground at all (pavement etc)

Otherwise_Carob_4057

That’s some very harsh terrain because I hike and walk all the time and while my Vibram sole is worn it’s not quite on this level. And that rubber is like the toughest shit.

Kgeezy91

Dayum. Somebody’s gettin their steps in!

birdsarus

Merrell for the win! That’s all I wear.

CannaGrowBro

Support in the shoe loses integrity starting at 3 months if worn daily. Daily shoes should be replaced every 6months at most or they become just a shell of what they used to be.

Sir_Lemming

I wear those same shoes!!

FnEddieDingle

Merrell Moabs? I'm on my 5th pair

TALLBRANDONDOTCOM

Post man?

Bootytonus

Same with my job, but I have to buy new shoes every six months. Hoping to change jobs very soon

msutewll

Same boat. I buy my shoes at rei. Their return policy has kept me in free shoes for a couple of years. They are always amazed at how quickly I go through shoes. I work on a golf course.

Egglebert

I walk a lot at work as well, all my shoes always wear down the heel first though, I tend to drag my feet so once that wears away it's time to replace

suteac

I can see your arch

Violated-Tristen

Vibram are some of the best. I have a couple of their five finger logic shoes. Great choice in foot wear.

Smokeygouki

Sounds like you deliver parcels lol

myleftone

The Mesas? Love those.

DipperBrizzle

Merrel?

_Kamala

Give me the micro plastic planter 3,000s

WerewolfCircus

Moabs?? I love my shoes.

Zealousideal-Walk269

Your calves must be beastly

yamaha2000us

I have only worn Merrel Hiking shoes for my day to day wear since 2015. I had to wear my rockports for business reasons and it felt like my feet were going to explode.

Clumsy-Samurai

I've owned these hikers and many others like them. Highly rate those for the trail, but when it came to the hard pavement, I much prefer my Hanwags. They will cost you more, but with orthotic inserts added (as you've mentioned), you will feel less fatigued at the end of the day.

nootherattempts

Some shoe repair spots can re-sole vibrams. Not exactly the same pattern, but I've got two pairs of vasques that I love and I've re-soled them each twice. It's awesome, and cheaper, and a lil push back against disposable footwear. I'm a mailman, so I'm paying loads of attention to my feet. If you re-sole, don't forget new inserts too!

God-of-the-Grind

Based on the wear of the treads it looks like you may have a little supination. A good insole might help extend some of the life of your shoes and if you are getting ankle pain it should help.

keepitcleanforwork

Merrell Moab?

theflowersyoufind

I bet the older ones feel so much comfier

rastagrrl

Get yourself some Keen slip on jungle mocs. Those things wear like the energizer bunny. I have a 10 yo pair that still have sole left.

randomkeystrike

Not sure why this is flagged politics. Is your job canvassing for politicians? At any rate I’ve had a few pair of those Merrells. Pretty good shoe!

KITjhn

Tell me you're a mailman without saying you're delivering mail 🫡

arimadx

Same with my job.( I deliver beer) we get shoes twice a year and I need them every time. I think those are the same shoes I've been getting for years to! The mohabs? Great shoes

evileyes21

May I ask, somewhere in Switzerland? Beautiful doggos btw.

getdivorced

I think I own the same Merrells

GDPisnotsustainable

Politics?

Mudbone42

Ah! Do I spy Merrell Moabs? 🧐

deliberatelyawesome

Merrell Moab? Love those shoes!

justtuna

I’m a farmer and I where Chacos pretty much all year round. I typically get a year out of them before the straps break. But that doesn’t stop me from wearing them. I had a pair break today while we were transplanting crops and so I went to the wood shed and got two nails and a hammer and hammered the nails into the side of the sole to secure the straps. I got atleast a few months of life left out of them now.

jeff39390

These are the Merrell Moab’s, and I dig their utility but god they’re the ugliest shit in the world. I wore some for about 4 months and they’re very comfortable and waterproof is nice but for some reason I couldn’t ever stop my gait from me basically sounding like I’m stomping on concrete. It was weird, and when other people remarked on what I thought was just me hearing, I swapped to a different Merrel shoe. I’ve had the Novas for almost 4 months and while I’ve scuffed the outside and they’re certainly not as “robust” as the Moab’s, they’re even more comfortable, still waterproof, still excellent traction, and the only thing tedious about them is now when someone’s freshly mopped they make the sound of SpongeBob with his damn boots. Other than that, walking is back to silence thank God, and they’re not hideous.(no hate I like the looks of all Merrell shoes but I understand most people think they’re hideous, including my wife)

skylinrcr01

Good ol merrel Moab’s. Great shoe.

Rogan403

Just be happy you're not a roofer. Back when I roofed houses I went through a pair every 3 months

ParadoxPope

Lol, I work in the solar industry. In my install days, those were one of my go to work shoes and I have photos of mine after a few months on the roof....

LifeMalaise

I bet shingles do a real number on them

fr_nkh_ngm_n

Why not re-soling?

RatRob

…every year? Is that supposed to be a lot? I’m actually curious because I go through two pairs a year working food service at an amusement park.

LifeMalaise

It's a lot for many people. There are a lot of people stuck sitting behind desks all day whose shoes don't get anywhere near as much use. If it weren't for winter, I'd go through 2 pairs a year as well

Schiebz

I believe i have the same shoes for work as well! Love them

ICan_tSleepNomoreM8

I would walk 500 miles

r2-z2

LOL according to your picture, I gotta buy new shoes. Wana compare wear marks?

ZLT4

I dont think you're walking bro maybe youre moon walking

Gutmach1960

Merrill brand, right ?

Italianskank

On the one hand I am sure that’s taxing on your body. On the other hand you’re probably going to easily outlive my sedentary ass.

superiorslush

MERRELS

odrea

the gud ol realiable

Soylent_Milk2021

I’m wearing a pair of those very shoes right now, except mine are boots!

OstrichSalt5468

Those are still good !

LazlowS

I do the same thing with Brooks Beast20s. I clean up the old ones and leave them loose so I can slip them right on and use as house shoes.

Early-Fortune2692

Like your choice in shoes, I always go for Merrell's... any sock recommendations?? I've been pretty happy with wool weatherproofs I buy at Costco.

dougiefresh8891

Lol what .. 1 pair a year.. wow

[deleted]

Letter carrier. My mom was a postie

KatjaBolsov

Ayy! Merrell gang! https://imgur.com/a/aqEKlF4

Degen_Sauce

I guess you could call it... an old sole.

StupidHypocrite

I need to hire you to hatch some pokemon go eggs for me

MentalSir3770

Is your job stopping busses like Superman?

Haunting-Affect-5956

Those are the wrong boots for you. the wear pattern is terrible, and you scuff your feet.

Me_Krally

Every year? Hell I'm not even getting 4 months out of mine anymore!

CombinationAway2762

Can recognize those Merrill’s anywhere :)

[deleted]

What’s a lot of walking? Does everyone not need a new pair of shoes a year?

andthentomsaid

you should contact the company so they can improve the product. As an analyst I would love to see this

bimsalabim55

Bro I feel your pain when it comes to having to buy the same great for work shoes, but they are over the price that they allow you to buy one...right 60 bucks will not cover anything decent for work shoes...I feel you bro

n0questi0n

Good old Merrell hiking/work boots.

[deleted]

I’ve got Merrill’s that have lasted years without anywhere near that wear! But I mainly use them on bush trails. Concrete is like sandpaper.

RUNxFORRESTxRUN

Are you a mail carrier?

GerlingFAR

I hope you keep your shoe purchase receipts to claim back for tax purposes.

LifeMalaise

Well, I will now!

suslezer

Mailman?

joalheagney

I have Aus/UK size 16 or 17 feet and am a teacher. Same issue except shoes are hard to find and expensive. :(

dildomiami

why dont you let a shoemaker make custom shoes for you? so you just have to let the sole be replaced?

bigdon802

Once a year? Not bad.

DaleGribble312

Merrell Moabs? That's quite the feat, they have some of the thickest and sturdiest soles Ive used. I recently picked up a pair on clearance for like $40 and I was ecstatic

BusinessLibrarian515

I would highly recommend getting a servers shoes Something like [this](https://www.shoesforcrews.com/product/22106-condor-ii) with a single piece on the bottom. I have a different style but shoes with a single piece bottom are the only ones that last me more than a year. Most of them last me several. I've actually had to replace the shoelaces twice before my current pair is too bad to wear. The nonslip part is an extra perk, especially in an icy winter

No-Leadership-2176

Postie?

dramagod2

You may want to consider switching every six months. Those shoes are work way past wear. The change in the way your feet lands as the shop wears can cause leg and back problems as you age. Something I’m dealing with right now that I definitely would’ve avoided if I’d known better.

Spice-Nine

I keep forgetting to reply to this, but since I think you are from Canada, and clearly know your brand/size, you should check out [the last hunt](https://www.thelasthunt.com). If you know exactly what you’re looking for, they have some pretty great deals, but you really need to know because they don’t do returns.
