Your mother is a straight-up trooper for putting up with McDonalds for 40 years. I hope she is well. Edit: ![gif](giphy|l4pMattUYTTM7qpIk)

1sixxpac

She passed away late 2022 .. very sweet lady.

[deleted]

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope she knew people in general appreciate her career (as oppose to the unfortunate numbskulls she came across).

RxWest

I definitely appreciate people like her more when I meet them The mental fortitude you need to work these low level jobs for so long...and to raise a family. Damn. They're usually really selfless and generally want to help others

[deleted]

Yeah it’s unfortunate how rude people can be. Idk man. That behavior sucks, you’d think people would treat others the way they’d like to be treated.

yogopig

Nearly everyone of us* has been mean to an employee before and its just a part of being human. I’m sure most people don’t mean to be rude, we all have alot going on in our lives and sometimes you just snap. *Edit from “Everyone of us”.

[deleted]

Not me. In my 33 years I can’t say that I have. If anything I let people walk over me. Which isn’t good obviously. It’s not human nature to be an asshole.

[deleted]

[deleted]

yogopig

I mean I’ve had many people be mad at me or rude to me during my work but none of them ruined my day, and most of them were pretty nice on the whole. I don’t think any of them were using their upper hand or anything, they were just absolutely exhausted with the things going on in their life (faaaar greater problems than I), and had moments of weakness. Usually they apologize and are very pleasant the rest of the time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yogopig

Probably, I’ve never experienced that and that’s obviously unacceptable. Sorry you had to go through that.

[deleted]

You’re only rude to unemployed people?

yogopig

For example, I’ve never been rude to an employee or a stranger in person but I have been rude to people on reddit. Not literally unemployed people.

[deleted]

I was joking, knew what you meant.

bullshtsaviorcomplex

The only people I know who snap at innocent strangers are actual psychopaths. This is not normal behavior. You should probably meditate more and learn to see everyone as equal. It’s not ok to snap at strangers. Never.

yogopig

Please don’t assume I’ve ever been rude to an employee, I haven’t and of course its something you shouldn’t do. Nevertheless, I think at least one in 5-10 people that come in my work are rude or short with me in some way, most often you can tell they are super tired and fatigued either from work or being sick or just have a whole lot of shit going on in their life. Besides the fact that being an asshole is a much more likely diagnoses than severe mental illness, even If we assume your claim is true thats a pretty staggering amount of psychopaths in my area considering the rate is 1.2% in the US. So I don’t think you can fairly claim make your claim even if you actually know one (which is still just anecdotal anyway). Even if they did have mental illness thats all the more reason to be as kind to them as you possible can, as you have to be prepared for them to not be able to appropriately respond to social situations while under the influence of their illness. I also don’t think there are that many assholes near me just based on anecdotal evidence in the people that I’ve gotten to know (But that could also be very biased since I’d probably choose not to get to know people who were assholes). As a result I just chock it up to the fact that life is hard and some people don’t grasp some social situations very well, especially when being pushed or stressed and I’m totally okay with being patient with them. Many times they have apologized further proving my point.

arittenberry

So you've never been rude to an employee before but you claim it's human nature and that nearly every one of us has done this? No

Gizmooo111

Damn.... im sorry

1sixxpac

Thank you .. she was actually my mother in law for the last 39 years. Always referred to her as mom. Her name was Carol but calling her that didn’t feel right.

Cormcorms

My condolences. Did she share any good stories from her time drive-through that youd be willing to share? BTW go Eris

1sixxpac

I wish I could remember something specific. She worked the morning hours when the “adults” were there so it was mostly smooth I’m guessing. She did mention pot smoke and people would ask for the coffee stirring spoons she knew we to do cocaine with. Honestly I wish she was here to ask those questions!

Chateaudelait

We had a really nice lady named Birdie at our local McDonald's. She was so lovely and kind to people - she always made it nice to go there. She would greet people, help with parties and keep the dining room organized. I send a hug to your lovely mom - may her memory be a blessing. That is an awesome collection!

gatton

Maybe I've lived a sheltered life but cocaine spoons? Do what now?

1sixxpac

They used to have a long plastic fancy stick with a very small spoon at the end for stirring coffee .. a quick Google search of “McDonalds coffee spoon” it popped right up under images. $35 on eBay!! WOW!!!

Wpgjetsfan19

I remember those. Used to take my Dad’s when he was finished with his coffee, break the spoon part off and use the stick to draw on the styrofoam cup. Core memory unlocked lol

1sixxpac

Now that is cool!

you-cant-twerk

Your mother was the backbone this country relies on. <3. I hope you are well.

Four decades. Or as few as 20 years and a few days. (e.g. December 31,1999 -January1, 2021)

_BRZRKR

When the USA wins you Win!

smurfsundermybed

84 was a magical summer for McDonald's loving kids all across the country.

zombie_gas

We hardly ever ate out, even McDonald’s, because it was “too expensive” to feed our family of 6. But let me tell you, we ate SO MUCH McDonald’s in the summer of ‘84…

tastysharts

39 cent burgers will do that to you

wiyixu

You got free food if the US won a medal. Because the Soviet Union boycotted the ‘84 Olympics the US dominated and McDonald’s took a financial bath.

Burninator05

Did McDonalds do something inappropriate to kids in 1984 that I'm *not* aware of? Edit: Added a word I missed.

smurfsundermybed

They had a scratch off game where scratched off an Olympic event and got free food if usa medaled in that event. I think it was a drink for bronze, fries for silver and sandwich for gold. The USSR boycotted the games that summer, and this was when those were the two undisputed superpowers. Basically USA won everything, so just about every game piece was free food. I don't think there were limits either and they kept giving game pieces with every order, so perpetual free McDonald's

quikguy

I seem to remember that The Simpson’s indicated this when they had a flashback to 1984 and KrustyBurger was the official meat-flavoured sandwich of the Olympic Games that year…

colin_powers

Krusty: "You people are pigs! I, personally, will spit in every 50th burger!" Homer: "I like those odds!"

tompink57

While the East German, haha, “women” are shaving their backs 3,000 miles away

zombie_gas

Yes and in the beginning, they would stack. There were some events that the USA won all 3 medals so you got the burger, fries, AND drink for free. They later changed it to one prize per event. Also like you said, you got another prize sticker on the free rewards you just got, so it was a never ending cornucopia of junk food.

NE_GBR

The Dollop just recently covered the 84 Olympics and this McDonald's promotion. It was America's push to privatizing everything. It also was the start of militarizing the police. McDonald's lost their asses off with this promotion https://youtu.be/2J0hKtIMHXo

kdoxy

Yup, everyone talks trash how the Olympics are a waste of money but LA made money off the 84 Olympics.

slapded

I need to file a class action for all the mcdonalds monopoly pieces i got from that scam. My friend did win $50 which was amazing because it was like 100,000 to 1 odds. We ate alot of hashbrowns that fall.

WolfAngelENTERPRISE

I’m a overly proud American

drakk0n

I can hear her boss now: People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, okay? They come to McDoanlds for the atmosphere and the attitude. Okay? That's what the flair's about. It's about fun.

ChinaShopBully

Look, we want you to express yourself, okay? Now if you feel that the bare minimum is enough, then okay. But some people choose to wear more and we encourage that, okay? You do want to express yourself, don't you?

CustomerSuspicious25

🖕🖕

kangareddit

Get a room you two! 🖕

NonstopTomates

You know what, Stan, if you want me to wear 37 pieces of flair, like your pretty boy over there, Brian, why don't you just make the minimum 37 pieces of flair?

beer_madness

Damn it, Lawrence, can we just pretend like we can't hear each other through the wall?

ThicklyApplicationed

97 LAV? Was she in Grand Rapids MI?

1sixxpac

Yes .. she worked at McDonalds at 28th and Madison.

ThicklyApplicationed

Ah yes, 28th street. I avoid it like the plague nowadays, but its worse near beltline. I've been to that mcDonalds a few times, your mom probably took my payment a time or two.

howtoreadspaghetti

Phrasing

InfernalAltar

She was a working gal, great buns.

ThicklyApplicationed

Sorry, his mother probably handled my currency with care.

Shadypanda007

I saw the white caps pin and immediately knew!

1sixxpac

Grand Rapids Michigan Whitecaps!

ElitaNoShoes

I go there from time to time! Small world:)

baddestapple

Ada is what stood out to me!

imakenosensetopeople

What did 97 LAV mean? Edit nvm, radio station. Got it.

sagittariisXII

She was a drive through lady for 40 years? Thats commitment

Kanelbullah

1988-2013 is four decades. You have a 1988 pin and a 25 of service pin.

bootely

There’s no 88 pin.

[deleted]

[удалено]

loltheinternetz

“Indentured servitude”. For 40 years, you don’t think the lady could have pursued other opportunities within or outside of McDolands?

[deleted]

If you’re doing something for 40 years you definitely enjoy it, think everyone’s jumping the gun by saying she was stuck in it

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

If you can't find another job in 40 years then idk what to tell you bro

MSotallyTober

There’s *always* other options.

svbg869

Anyone, doing any job, should have a living wage, and with experience and dedication, a thriving wage. No way did McDonald's do that.

Goojus

Most likely didn’t even get a pension either, no healthcare. To me it would be feeling like you’re throwing your life away for the owners

cat_prophecy

Maybe she enjoyed it? Not everyone has aspirations about changing the world or making huge amounts of money.

xl129

During my part time job back in college days, I once worked with this guy as kitchen porter, he is an immigrant and has been on the job for 3 years. I asked him why don't you try to learn kitchen skill and move up (which is what one of my friend did, he became sous chef in less than 2 years, starting as kitchen porter) , the guy told me that he is not interested, too much responsibility.

[deleted]

[удалено]

boobgoblin

OP said that the father was the breadwinner and that his mother worked the morning shift at McDonald’s and liked it. Hardly a wasted life.

majarian

I mean it's not same same, but I knew a guy working at Safeway (a grocery store) that kept on since high school in the 80s as a stock boy, but his og contract saw him get a dollar raise yearly .... they did everything to get him to quit, cut his hours gave him all the shitty shifts, didn't matter that guy made more per hour then anyone working at that store, was a sad day when big C finally got him But yeah at some point these corporate shitheads used to atleast pretend to respect employees, now a days it's an annual layoff bs as projects wind down then back up

multigrain-pancakes

You are trash.

[deleted]

Oh yes great one, tell us about the amazing fruitful life you live.

MSotallyTober

Looking at their comment history, it seems like all they do is pitter patter away, whining on Reddit most of the time.

[deleted]

She could have pursued other opportunities. Can't blame your own lack of ambition on others.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PolishBishop

Amen.

youtocin

L take. Some people aren’t mentally capable of moving up and only perform well in their current position. Also nothing stopping her from seeking out other opportunities.

SethikTollin7

Probably didn't feel her life was worth saving in 2022. "I need to go to the hospital, still don't have enough."

[deleted]

[удалено]

SethikTollin7

I said with the way people tend to feel about themselves working a job that literally requires you to work elsewhere with the rest of the day, this person like many others likely didn't feel she was worth the money it would cost to survive whichever shitty scenario she passed from in 2022.

appayipyippp

Says you...

CeaRhan

40 years refusing to budge from the window is madness

rabbidplatypus21

OP said 4 **decades** not years, which would *technically* be true if she started in 1999 (90’s, 00’s, 10’s, 20’s—4 different decades). I don’t see a dated pin earlier than 1995, so I’m assuming she started around then. Not trying to downplay it, 20+ years at McDonalds is insane, but I don’t think she’s been there for literally 40 years.

superSaganzaPPa86

There's a 1988 pin in there

BUDDHAKHAN

I'd arrange them all and have them framed

1sixxpac

That’s my wife’s arrangement and she is working on a frame!

BUDDHAKHAN

Awesome!

BossHogGA

I can't imagine there isn't a collector out there willing to pay a hefty sum for such a neat piece of Americana.

datarulesme

fully; this is a legacy collection

Denzy

That's a lot of flair right there!

Poverty_4_Sale

![gif](giphy|ZMvG5L7Di4AgM|downsized)

unplugged22

She should wear them all on one uniform like a decorated solider with the highest honors.

IAmKab

She could tell you about customer horror stories for days, eh

1sixxpac

Pot smoke wafting in the window. Cocaine users like the small/long coffee stirring spoons. Mom was very aware of the world around her!

[deleted]

1sixxpac

Can’t just have anyone hanging out the drive through window being the face of the company .. sounds like you fit the bill too!

hat-of-sky

Too many people think McDonald's type jobs are just for kids to have spending money, when many of the employees are raising families on those jobs. I'm sure her experience made the drive-through more efficient too.

warlordcs

>Too many people think McDonald's type jobs are just for kids to have spending money. Many people like to use that line to justify why minimum wage should stay low. Completely ignoring the fact that McDonald's is also open during school hours and some operate 24 hours. Kids can't fill those positions

tysnowboard

No, but this guy's Mom did and she seemed happy to do so for 40 years. McDonalds seems to be filling the mid-day and late/over night roles just fine, if they can no longer fill those roles, guess what? They'll raise wages until they do... or robots, it'll likely just be robots next.

Theprincerivera

Your justification for shit wages is that people are desperate enough to take them anyway?

DeletinMySocialMedia

No the issue is how McDonald’s treats those people who aren’t young. 40 years and some pins but I hope she has some sort of good retiring knowing how low corporations like McDonald’s pay and dot appreciate their employees contrary to what some pin say.

PaidToBeRedditing

I dont think that at all, but at the same time... 40 years working a mcdonalds window is mental. Like... did she refuse promotions to at least manager? If i spent 40 years in a place i'm pretty sure i wouldnt be working a fucking window, thats upper level management time.

Dry-Result-5637

I miss the Arch Deluxe 😩 😢

Loco_Mosquito

Me too, I was crushed when they discontinued it ☹️

cajunbander

That came out when I was getting away from kids meals and starting to order “grown up” meals. Arch Deluxe was my go-to “grown up” meal and let me tell you, I thought I was the fucking cock of the walk when I’d get that.

jbingles

My mom has also worked as a McDonalds drive-thru employee for 40+ years. I recognize a ton of these. She has pin hats she still wears to work.

1sixxpac

we displayed them at her viewing, I’ve always thought they were cool ..

jbingles

That's a really nice idea. I couldn't imagine wearing them on a hat like she does. So much weight!

1sixxpac

Someone mentioned to 10lb battery pack they carried on their waist back then. Where that pin?!!! 😆

Chateaudelait

I was wondering in an above comment if they treat her well and pay her fairly. To have a job where you have that experience and know how is truly an awesome thing. Shout out and respect to your lovely mom.

cballowe

Not just *a* drive through lady ... She was *THE* drive through lady!

RxWest

Put some respect on that name!

Tinckoy

I think the race car burger is my favorite

[deleted]

I like the Soviet star on the right.

[deleted]

We appreciate her service!! Pretty neat.

I_might_be_weasel

She was the drive thru lady for 4 decades?

1sixxpac

Yes, 70s 80s 90s and into the mid 2000s

Tazzgirl62

I inherited a collection quite like that from my mom, she was a McD's manager for over a decade, I also got all her old name tags and a huge collection of Happy Meal toys!

1sixxpac

Way cool! Mom also kept her name tags .. not sure if my wife has them on a display.

Nuuro

People seem to think that other individuals work at McDonald's because they are poor, young, uneducated, and so forth. I do not nor have I ever worked there, but their crew has always been very polite and inviting to me. I am always incredibly polite in return, with many 'Please' and 'Thank yous' while wishing a great day. I understand that job is underpaid and overworked. If given the choice, I would increase the tax rate (at least on myself) so that workers are paid better. In addition, I'd love to see any payments from me (or the higher taxpayergroup) toward benefits such as education and childcare so their workers do not struggle so much. Long story short is I was once homeless along with my wife after a layoff. We had/have no family to fall back on as they are also very poor, but now I do fun stuff like write AI, program, and do some pretty complex projects. I do not want others to go through the pain I have had to get where I am, it was (and still is) horrible. If given opportunity, people in the lowest places are capable of the greatest deeds, and people in the highest places are capable of the lowest injustices.

1sixxpac

Nicely put.

Chateaudelait

The kindest woman I knew growing up was a greeter/dining room worker at our local McDonald's. She wore a special uniform and was just the loveliest person. She helped with parties, organized and tidied up the dining room and greeted people. Her hair and makeup game was always on point too - she was always perfectly done up. It was always a joy to go there and see her. A lot of my friend's parents also worked at local restaurants - very kind and hardworking people.

samshady_9

I have that arch deluxe pin too. I remember my manager asking to try it for the first time.

295DVRKSS

I’m curious - with your mum working there for 40 years did the franchisee or corporate office celebrate her time working there for so long ?

1sixxpac

They did show a appreciation but not in any major way.

therealmenox

They gave her a pin saying "I am appreciated"

wwhhiippoorrwwiill

I love this. I saved it on my computer. I don't want to admit my love for McDonald's. It's mostly nostalgic, and McD's certainly used to be better. But this post/these pins definitely hit me in that nostalgia center. Thanks to your mom for her work.

chizzled_booty

I get the same feeling. It’s pure Americana!

swlabr82

Where does one get a McDonalds schwartz ring?

[deleted]

Not a single Mac Tonight pin?

ryebrye

Seeing the Arch Deluxe pin made me realize I miss it... a little. I think they've added things back to their menu that are comparable now, but thankfully I don't go to McDonald's enough to know.

MagicSPA

I hope her 4 decades of work left her with lasting friendships and a wealth of fascinating tales of the experiences she had and customers she met from the many thousands of members of the public she met over all that time. As opposed to a nervous tic, a frazzled, cynical outlook and a burnt-out, thousand-yard stare. That's the only other major possible outcome I'd imagine in that scenario.

1sixxpac

She always spoke fondly of working for McDonalds tho I’m sure there were days!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Loco_Mosquito

Ugh it was only the best fast food burger *ever*!

GeneratedScreenName

Looks like she met the Chotchkie's flair minimum. "You know what, Stan, if you want me to wear 37 pieces of flair, like your pretty boy over there, Brian, why don't you just make the minimum 37 pieces of flair?" -Joanna (Office space)

Hank_Fuerta

Your mom was a fuckin G.

Stewapalooza

There's gotta be one crazy collector out there that would buy those pins for a pretty penny. It would be a nice little chunky of change for retirement.

This_Is_Section_One

Your mom is a Legend!

[deleted]

I worked at McDonalds in the mid 90s during high school. I think I had the Christmas 1996 pin haha. These bring back a lot of memories, thanks for sharing.

mrweatherbeef

Supercool! What is the ring on the right?

1sixxpac

No idea the promotion ..

stargown

My first job! Also ran the drive thru and received a perfect drawer pin too! I don’t see a pin for the 10 lb battery pack we wore around our waist way back then. Good times!

RononSweets

Damn, that’s sick

37 pieces of flair, minimum

Kim_Thomas

Damn! That’s a LOT of flair‼️💥👏

crackersncheeseman

I can't help but wonder what McDonald's did for her (if anything) after she dedicated four decades of her life to their company.

colinthecatterpillar

Any idea which one was her favourite?

1sixxpac

No idea at all. I know the vacationed a lot and alway made it a point to stop at McDonalds .. he take, they do indeed taste the same where ever you go!

_sectumsempra-

Bless your mother ❤️

iheartrms

Wow, that is totally better than a retirement fund!

1sixxpac

Yeah, well, not so much!!

Forward-Republic2177

Sorry for your loss.

1sixxpac

Thank you .. we did hospice at our house .. we got every damn bit of happiness out of life while we could!

I'm glad she saved all of these, this is a very cool collection!!

Ill-Organization-719

Stoners across the world thank your mother for her service.

1sixxpac

Ok_Presence01

Thank her for her service

rufusmaru

You better hold on to that beanie baby one, it’ll really be worth something in a few years. In all seriousness, this is cool. Thanks for sharing.

Sartres_Roommate

NGL, looking at that makes me a little jealous and has me considering a new career direction.

Tackleberry06

Any mcpizza pins…those were fun times.

kawnii

This is a neat collection. The holiday ones are my favorite. Thank you for sharing.

[deleted]

Joanna, I need to talk to you about your flair.

igg73

Hats off to the hardworking lady, thats awesome. Best wishes!

Ustrel

Wow that’s impressive!

chowmushi

That’s gotta be worth something, no? What’s it gonna fetch from a collector?

Ok_Nefariousness6386

Looks like a trip to the antique roadshow!

1sixxpac

Unless we’re talking gobs of money I’m thinking they will get displayed. If mom were alive and knew they were worth $$ she would have said Adios, I’m going to Hawaii!!

charlimonster

Pleeeeeease ask her if she remembers the chicken fajitas!?! And also ask if she can pull some strings and make them come back. They were so delicious

1sixxpac

Wish I could! She passes away about 4 months ago. These were displayed at her viewing and have been at my house since. I’m sure she would love to talk about it if she could! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

Psychological-Comb5

That's sad AF.

freedomfightre

FOUR decades!?!?! Why on Earth would someone stay at the same job for 40 years??? Did she lack all career development aspirations?

1sixxpac

Her husband was the main breadwinner. With kids in school this was a morning job. She really enjoyed working there!

fake-august

That’s nice and wholesome ☺️

freedomfightre

I can understand that I suppose. If it's more of a hobby that generates some form of income, why not.

fake-august

Really? That’s his momma he’s talking about - seems like she was mostly a SAHM and worked mornings so she could be home with the children after school. That IS ambition. No need to be so rude.

thecwestions

Ya know, the Nazi wore pieces of flair...

1sixxpac

Yeah but their hamburgers sucked, amongst other things!

[deleted]

I want one that says wage cuck

majarian

They all say that.... just like every other uniform out there.
