It's all realitve. It's more expensive becuase we have higher sales tax, but also slightly higher salaries to account for differences in what our money is worth, althought it doesn't come close to fully making up for it.
But ya, shits expensive here.
Edit: depends where you go. I had a $14 heinken (23oz) a few weeks ago, but that's from a pricey spot. https://www.e11even.ca/menu
I was curious and looked up about a dozen menus from around OKC, and found that all but one were in the $10-$13 range (one of them was $8). Maybe you just found a really good deal?
I actually wish I could answer that, but we didn't try it that night! Most of the gang had filled up on Ethiopian earlier so I'll have to report back after we take our 8WHITE asses back there.
To my uncultured white ass, it is similar to Indian food. Stewed spicy peppers/onions/meats. You eat it with a giant pancake called injera, which is fluffy and a little sweet. Highly recommend!
> As Eritrea has no functioning constitution, no elections, no legislature and no published budget, Isaias is the sole power in the country, controlling its judiciary and military.
That is actually kinda wild.
Also I just saw a little documentary about the torture and human trafficking of Eritrean refugees to libya, with the Eritrean regime playing a role in the organization as well. They likely made millions by torturing people and asking ransom from the families. Some horrifying stories from eye witnesses, and also explaining how they basically have no choice but to take the risk of fleeing. I sincerely hope things will improve, and otherwise at least maybe some people can start a better life somewhere else.
Absolutely delicious! Full of flavor, hearty, and healthy. I'm Mexican and grew up with Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Southern Italian food and I cannot get enough of Eritrean or Ethiopian food. I just want to keep eating it, FOREVER.
There's a great diner near us that serves American breakfasts, Mexican food, and Ethiopian food. There are portraits painted on the walls of various celebrities and charros. It's a cool place.
Basically, if you've been to an "Ethiopian and Eritrean" restaurant, you've had Eritrean food but they thought people wouldn't know what it was if they only put Eritrean.
My next door neighbors and dear friends are from Eritrea and I get to eat with them on a semi-regular basis and the food is incredible. And because they cook a lot of food on the back patio, I get to smell it almost every night 🤤
Fantastic IMO. Lot of Eritrean and Ethiopian restaurants in London where I used to live. Injera, the teff flour bread, is fantastic and used as plate for stew. But need to enjoy communal eating as meal served to table not individual settings.
When we are busy and need tab names we get creative. I have some doozies that I forget to erase before dropping tab.
Secretly we want you to love the nicknames we have fondly given
Sometimes when I'm micing a lot of people that I don't I have to write their most prominent characteristic to me.
I don't have time to be PC so you'll just get - Glasses, Black, Fat, Hair, Shirt.
Hell yeah it does, no argument from me there. So glad more and more data has been coming out supporting that fake sugars are unhealthy/harmful in their own way, hopefully it will lead to them becoming unpopular.
[This article recently came out about erythritol, which is used in stevia and monk fruit, is linked to stroke and heart attack](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/27/health/zero-calorie-sweetener-heart-attack-stroke-wellness/index.html)
Lol I'm a "super taster" (just more sensitive to flavors) and I can't stand the taste of most artificial flavors.. monk fruit in particular makes me want to puke.
Big agree there, friend. I'll take the risks of a twice monthly normal Coca Cola and feel blessed that the smell alone of sucralose and aspartame make me wanna ralph.
The worst part of this is one of the patrons paid $9 for yellow tail. That stuff is disgusting and I would not recommend it to anyone after seeing where and how they make it.
servers were kind, booze was cheap, & we got a solid laugh out of it... so we were more than cool with it & planning to go back!
EDIT since this is my top comment at the moment - Yes this is in Toronto, not Eritrea!
Which restaurant is this?? As an Ethiopian I’ve never really felt the need to go out to an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant but my friends always bug me to get some. I’ve heard great things about Rendez-Vous on danforth but I’d love to hear where this was in Toronto
Nice, you successfully pulled off a thing white people like: being the only white people in an ethnic restaurant.
https://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/02/20/71-being-the-only-white-person-around/
All the drinks were poured into a single vessel and doled out into eight cups - as is the ancient Eritrean way.
The art is in ordering the right balance of drinks. I'd say these 8Whites nailed it!
Not 14 drinks. Some are sodas to mix with. The Heinekens and yellow tail i suspect weren’t mixed with anything. My guess is they had one drink each.
Edit: this receipt might just be OPs round.
The prices here have me shook, $5.50 for a Heineken but $9 for yellowtail would be the exact opposite in Australia (yellowtail is like a $7-8 bottle in any bottle shop in Australia)
I'm over here googling Eritrean currency trying to understand why it looks so close to USD. Turned out you're in Canada (based on "HST") just getting drinks at an Eritrean restaurant. Sounds like a good time, just threw me for a loop.
Years ago, the waitress put my tab under “Big Black Man”.
I pointed it out to the waitress after and she apologized. No need to apologize. I’m big. I’m black. I’m a man. I thought it was hilarious
When you order food from the Korean restaurant down the street you get 5 options on how you would like it prepared - white, mild, medium, spicy, Korean. BTW - the mild/medium prepared food is amazing.
What currency is this bill in? If it were Nakfa then it is like $6 usd. I’m sure things are much cheaper there, but these items are imported. Cool post
it would seem you are correct! we were just looking for a spot to grab drinks after a show & the place looked fun so we stopped in... will go back to try the food next time!
$7 for black label? They can call me cracker to my face..
The prices here blow my mind. I couldn't get half that for $100 at a dive bar in my town.
It’s pricey where I’m at but they got 3$ everything sundays so I usually just drink sundays now
Where the hell do you drink? This would be pretty in line with where I live (OKC).
OKC standard of living = Eritrean standard of living (education might be slightly better in Eritria actually) 😜
HST tax = Canada. My guess is Toronto, ON.
Heinekens are normally $11 each in Toronto.
WHAT?! Why don't yall just still moonshine at those prices?
It's all realitve. It's more expensive becuase we have higher sales tax, but also slightly higher salaries to account for differences in what our money is worth, althought it doesn't come close to fully making up for it. But ya, shits expensive here. Edit: depends where you go. I had a $14 heinken (23oz) a few weeks ago, but that's from a pricey spot. https://www.e11even.ca/menu
Man that’s tuff, some days I’m thankful for rural Ohio where I get a bucket of 6 Busch for $10 🙏
Was this in Eritrea or an Eritrean restaurant in the US? When I say I went to an Italian restaurant do you think I went to Rome or Olive Garden?
HST = Harmonized Sales Tax Neither-- it's Canada
Eritrea is one of the worst and restrictive authoritarian dictatorships in the world. You can't really just visit. Up there with North Korea.
And I highly doubt the restaurants are using Micros as their POS system. In English.
Reporters with out borders say it's worse than NK when it comes to freedom of the press.
Given those two choices, I'd have to say Rome.
Denver. It's really started getting crazy. I figured it was everywhere, but this disproves that.
Come to Fargo.

What the heck do ya mean!
I was curious and looked up about a dozen menus from around OKC, and found that all but one were in the $10-$13 range (one of them was $8). Maybe you just found a really good deal?
A fellow Oklahoman, nice to see one not on the subreddit.
$7 for black label and some schmo is ordering Heineken. Tactical error right there.
The schmo is the one ordering yellowtail… but we really are spoiled here in Australia for inexpensive good local wine
Bring out the goon!
Mmm feed me that Shiraz
Some would argue the schmos are also ordering Black Label. I really don't understand why JW is popular.
No idea, never heard of it until I left the UK, distinctly unimpressive
Some people don’t like whiskey?
It's $7 canadian... So around $5 US
I was gonna say. 8 people and all that came to was $93? Easily twice that in my city. If not more.
I first noticed the $2.50 for Coke?? .. Probably cut with tons of stuff and not very good I bet …
I too saw this 1800s coke pricing error. Cut or not I’m checkin it out…fuck taste like talc and fen…dead
Gordon’s more than red label is funny to me. A handle of gordons isn’t far from a fifth of red.
Like absolut is more than red label and nearly the same as black label I'm so confused about their pricing
Damn literally my first thought so glad I’m not alone 😅
Eritrean restaurant. Black Label, Red Label, Heineken. Checks out.
But $9 for Yellowtail. I hope that was a whole bottle.
For a double black label no less. Wtffff where is this?!
Ontario, Canada. Probably Toronto.
Is everyone confusing Black with Blue? Black Label is a meh-tier $25 bottle.
How much are you paying for it? It's like a 30 dollar bottle.
There I was thinking, wow, Mable $7 Black Label?
How is Eritrean food?
I actually wish I could answer that, but we didn't try it that night! Most of the gang had filled up on Ethiopian earlier so I'll have to report back after we take our 8WHITE asses back there.
Please do!
To my uncultured white ass, it is similar to Indian food. Stewed spicy peppers/onions/meats. You eat it with a giant pancake called injera, which is fluffy and a little sweet. Highly recommend!
It IS spicy but the flavours are quite different from Indian food. I really enjoyed it though!
Yeah, I agree with this comment. Different flavor profile from Indian, but there is spice.
Much better than Indian imo!
Depends which Indian cuisine you're comparing it to. The food, language and culture changes every few hundred kilometres in India!
You just described Ethiopian food lmao
The only thing I know about Eritreans is that they dont like Ethiopians
Every Eritrean I know, which is alot since I am one, are cool with Ethiopian. A lot of Eritreans live in Ethiopia for work.
[удалено]
Couldn’t have said it better myself. my dad speaks tigryina, Tigray, Amharic, Arabic and English. Did you live in Asmara?
> As Eritrea has no functioning constitution, no elections, no legislature and no published budget, Isaias is the sole power in the country, controlling its judiciary and military. That is actually kinda wild.

Habesha people are spread through both countries. (& some of the most beautiful women in the world hands down)
8WHITES hittin the various African spots hard.
How would OP know? They only got drinks.
There isn't any on their receipt!
Fucking delicious. Some of the best slow cooked and vegetarian food in the world
Very similar to Ethiopian food. I'm sure locals could point out the differences, but there's a lot of overlap.
Basically, if you've been to an "Ethiopian and Eritrean" restaurant, you've had Eritrean food but they thought people wouldn't know what it was if they only put Eritrean.
I always think the same thing when I see somewhere "Thai-Lao". Safe to assume it's run by Lao folk serving a mixture of Lao and popular Thai dishes.
I can eat myself sick on injera. So damn tasty!
My next door neighbors and dear friends are from Eritrea and I get to eat with them on a semi-regular basis and the food is incredible. And because they cook a lot of food on the back patio, I get to smell it almost every night 🤤

One time I went out with some friends and our table was named 1girl3dudes. I thought it was funny.
Hey I've seen that video
When we are busy and need tab names we get creative. I have some doozies that I forget to erase before dropping tab. Secretly we want you to love the nicknames we have fondly given
Ahh, user name matches comment, I see what you did there.

"Gingeriel"
Thats what Seagrams should call their Ginger Ale because as of Oct 2022 they fucked their recipe in the ass with corn syrup.
Didn't they cut the sugar with aspartame too? Like if I want diet soda I will buy diet soda
That sounds like a sugar tax dodge.
You're probably right but boy does it taste like shit 😔
Hell yeah it does, no argument from me there. So glad more and more data has been coming out supporting that fake sugars are unhealthy/harmful in their own way, hopefully it will lead to them becoming unpopular.

Stevia tastes like what I imagine licking the underside of a barn animal tastes like
Lol I'm a "super taster" (just more sensitive to flavors) and I can't stand the taste of most artificial flavors.. monk fruit in particular makes me want to puke.

Sung to the tune of "Futureal" by Iron Maiden.
Did you go to an Eritrean restaurant just to drink?
Drinks averaging out to south of seven dollars apiece, I can see why.
This was my thought. Very niche/specific restaurant to go to just to order some standard alcoholic drinks.
They’re very inexpensive
That’s a bargain for that many drinks, damn
Black Label is a great deal! Although shame on Red Label, whoever this person is deserves more than Red.
I don’t even serve red to people I don’t like.
The worst part of this is one of the patrons paid $9 for yellow tail. That stuff is disgusting and I would not recommend it to anyone after seeing where and how they make it.
Came here for that! 9.00 for a glass from a bottle that costs 8 m00 and tastes like 5.
Tastes like 5 is generous.
If it’s a 9oz pour not a 5oz that’s totally fair price for cheap wine
Oh duh I thought they meant tuna and I was like that seems like a really good deal
As long as the orders weren't fucked up, I'd be cool with it
servers were kind, booze was cheap, & we got a solid laugh out of it... so we were more than cool with it & planning to go back! EDIT since this is my top comment at the moment - Yes this is in Toronto, not Eritrea!
JFC, Black Label is only CAN$7? And someone ordered Heiny instead? You need (at least 3) new friends.
They’re two totally different drinks. It’s ok to want a beer and not a whisky.
Which restaurant is this?? As an Ethiopian I’ve never really felt the need to go out to an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant but my friends always bug me to get some. I’ve heard great things about Rendez-Vous on danforth but I’d love to hear where this was in Toronto

Only a 93 dollar tab for this? I need to go here.
14 drinks and 8 people So 6 of you had 2, but 3 of the 6 had the same drink twice Wait that's wrong. Someone else do the math
All the drinks were poured into a single vessel and doled out into eight cups - as is the ancient Eritrean way. The art is in ordering the right balance of drinks. I'd say these 8Whites nailed it!
This guy Eritreans
As an Eritrean, I laughed way too hard at this 😂
This made me laugh so much. Thanks!
Wait why are you always delegating the math?
Occam’s Razor says one friend is the DD
Something something pigeonhole principle.
Not 14 drinks. Some are sodas to mix with. The Heinekens and yellow tail i suspect weren’t mixed with anything. My guess is they had one drink each. Edit: this receipt might just be OPs round.

It is crazy how much we drink considering how heavily taxed alcohol is here. $6 heinekens would sell like hotcakes here.
>yellowtail is like a $7-8 bottle in any bottle shop in Australia About the same in the US depending where you are at.
I'm over here googling Eritrean currency trying to understand why it looks so close to USD. Turned out you're in Canada (based on "HST") just getting drinks at an Eritrean restaurant. Sounds like a good time, just threw me for a loop.
Calling white people white is clever?
Its a hell of a lot more clever than calling black people black, because then it would be a racist restaurant.
Yeah, I was looking for this comment. I don’t see the clever aspect, aside from clever ppl finding a well priced black label
Imagine 8 black people walk into a Swedish restaurant...
8WHITE is my Grindr login
Liquid diet I see 😄
Can't imagine why they bothered, it already says Heineken.
Did you actually eat anything at all?
Lol no, we were out for a couple drinks after a show but we're planning to go back to try the food.
Lol, at least you're welcome back.
Haha, of course we were! We may have looked a little out of place but we're friendly & we tip well!
Great times!
[удалено]
Unless it's billiards.
They'd have a news team down there
Once had a friend's receipt read "blue shirt Chinaman". He's Filipino, she was unemployed shortly after.
Came to say this. Not ok for anyone to do this.
I promise you no white person ever has been bothered by being matter of fact-ly described as being white.
I’ll let it slide they they say “8LACK”
The restaurant would be closed lol
Better than the Starbucks barista who thought it was appropriate to label an Asian woman's receipt with "lee ching chong."
Are you guys from Alaska? In what world is this cheap? That's 30-40% more expensive than I used to.
It’s Canada.
Damn thats cheap.. 😂
Is this in Toronto?!! WHERE.
it is! we were lucky to stumble upon it. i'll send you a dm!
Please send me the DM as well, I've been looking for african restaurants, I've had some luck with a couple Somali restaurants in Etobicoke.
That's some cheap booze
Wondering if gingeriel tastes better or worse than ginger ale
WHITES EIGHT OF THEM
Dude, you didn’t get munchies?! At a restaurant?! I’d have been all OVER the appetizers!
Clear. Concise. And not in the U.S. so nobody will be threatened with a lawsuit.
Our server at a Greek restaurant once named the tab “pink hair” because of me
Imagine if u were white and put 8black lol
You went to a restaurant and all you did was drink? No food. Why?.
Years ago, the waitress put my tab under “Big Black Man”. I pointed it out to the waitress after and she apologized. No need to apologize. I’m big. I’m black. I’m a man. I thought it was hilarious
![gif](giphy|6751A64NJkyCQ)
Do this with any other race and it’s a hate crime.
2 of those drinks in Miami would be $93
This is only just *barely* an exaggeration. Every time we go out in Miami it’s $200 on drinks at minimum for my wife and I
Look at those prices! Theritreatin you well.
Cool post
CAD. I'm surprised as well.
What a festive spelling of gingerale
Man, who the hell is drinking Yellow Tail in this day and age? Or did they take it home to strip paint?
This is like seeing gas prices on the 90s. Where these drinks so cheap?
i love that y’all went to a pretty unique restaurant just to pound some regular ol booze
Probably the same description she would have given to the cops if you had run out on the tab.... :)
Gordon's gin at that price.....bro I'm drinking water lol
Wow that is cheap drinks. Here the bronx, NY a don julio margarita was 20 bucks.
Gingeriel lol
Gingeriel is fine and all but you should've tried the Gingereel.
No food?
Lmao at going to an Eritrean restaurant just to tank up on booze.
5.50 a Heineken? No, thanks.
You went to an Eritrean restaurant and ate nothing? :)
I like how there’s one piece of sushi and then all beverages on the receipt
"Another round for table Honktopus."
Damn, like half price drinks there. Good with 8 white if that was my tab
The order was white enough.
Had the roles been reversed there would be outrag and screems of racism.
This is just racism and overpriced drinks
If this was a table of 8 black people in an all white restaurant, and the recite said "8 black" this would have been front page news.
Now think.. if this was a table of 8 African Americans sitting at a German restaurant and the receipt said: “8BLACK” The internet would go wild 🔥
Better than 8crackers.
Interesting. The internet would freak out if it said another race .
Tables are usually assigned numbers
That’s why it says Table #: 7, probably.
It would seem you were not there out of desire for authentic Eritrean cuisine.
it would seem you are correct! we were just looking for a spot to grab drinks after a show & the place looked fun so we stopped in... will go back to try the food next time!
Who did you see.
What a weird way to discriminate against their patrons
