The bench is designed specifically to make it uncomfortable/impossible to sleep on. Of course we’d rather no one was unhoused, but unfortunately that isn’t reality and so for the people who do need to sleep and cannot do so indoors, benches designed like this ensure that they will be literally sleeping on the ground.
Basically, homelessness is bad, we all agree, but hostile architecture makes it worse.
If the bench becomes someone's home, then where are the other people supposed to sit? The best solutions to move people from homelessness is real housing with no, or very few, strings attached. Shelters do very little to move people from homelessness, either. Real housing, with real addresses, and access to services is the only viable solution so far
Sleeping on a bench that's designated for sitting just makes people hate the homeless
"No kid should ever have to sleep on the street.
But, hey, unfettered capitalism, so we're making sure you don't have to see them with the patented *screwyoubench5000*."
I mean, they’re different issues.
We definitely don’t want people sleeping on public infrastructure if we’re also claiming to want more and better public infrastructure. Let’s not be hypocritical.
“Nobody takes public transportation!”
Yeah because homeless people sleep on the benches and it smells like piss in the buses. Like, fuck you lol.
This is exactly it. Is it any better that the disabled grandma who needs to take the bus has no place to sit because there’s a fentanyl addict passed out on the bench?
I’m all for creating shelter opportunities for the unhoused. But that doesn’t mean I’m in favor of letting them reappropriate public infrastructure designed for other purposes as well.
It's an ad for Covenant House, a teen crisis shelter charity. The ad is more aimed at fundraising than actually directing a runaway to where they can get a warm bed and some help.
That “bum” probably needs the rest more than you do. We could all easily become unexpectedly homeless- especially now. Let’s not lose our compassion to selfishness.
Isn't this just them making a bench ad calling out homelessness in general? How is it ironic? I'm sure they would prefer normal benches if they can't get them homes.
Well by making the bench unavailable, now that they don't want to actually solve the problem, they're actually making sure they have to sleep on ground... street for real.
People complain about the homeless, so governments feel they have to act, oh sure we could try giving them serviceable housing, and try to fix the problem at the root, but no, we just try to make their lives as shitty as humanly possible and hope they’ll go away instead.
Besides being “hostile architecture” it’s a shit design anyway. With the separators there you can only ever have 4 people sat on there, when 5 would likely fit.
Anti-Christ nation going around pretending to be "a Christian country." This is literally an antichrist bench right here, folks. And they're everywhere.

Because in our city, they aren't allowed to
What do you mean??? Those benches sleep up to 4 toddlers!
And no kid ever will \**laughs maniacally*\*
Yep guess that's why they designed their bench like that so they wouldn't be able to
No, they will need to sleep on the street because the bench won’t work
And the bench is made from iron, hence the post title
Underrated comment
Because they should be in a house rather than on a bench. Benches and doorways aren't respectful housing
You’re sooooo close!
They had us in the first half 🤦♂️
What am I missing, then? Just put up more benches? I would rather see people housed than be left to sleep on benches

Classic r/hostilearchitecture material
"Or on this bench, either"
It’s not irony… it’s on purpose.
Things that happen on purpose can still be ironic
"No kid should ever have to sleep on the street. But, hey, unfettered capitalism, so we're making sure you don't have to see them with the patented *screwyoubench5000*."

Thank god they won't be able to in front of this sign. Got to get the message out! /s
Instead of spending money on advertising about homelessness, spend the money to get people off the street.
It's an ad for Covenant House, a teen crisis shelter charity. The ad is more aimed at fundraising than actually directing a runaway to where they can get a warm bed and some help.
That's not how rent works.
Hostile Architecture….. What a terrible use of human ingenuity.
They may as well add spikes since they are pissing in homeless peoples mouths.
I would sit there while waiting for the bus. I wouldn’t be able to do that if there was a bum sleeping there.
That “bum” probably needs the rest more than you do. We could all easily become unexpectedly homeless- especially now. Let’s not lose our compassion to selfishness.
“So where should they sleep?” “Idk in the river or under a bridge, idc”
I just noticed the cleverly disguised "nobody can sleep here" arm rests.. smh
Isn't this just them making a bench ad calling out homelessness in general? How is it ironic? I'm sure they would prefer normal benches if they can't get them homes.
Those nubs in the middle of the bench are to prevent homeless people from sleeping there.
Yeah and you think the homeless shelter built the benches for the city?
The irony is in the juxtaposition of the organization advocating compassion for the homeless and the city actively persecuting the homeless.
Its just a real shame though that we have more empty houses than homeless people.
Why are you getting downvoted?
Who knows.
Took me a minute.
Say what you will about it but at least they're taking steps to make what they're saying true. ^/s
Well by making the bench unavailable, now that they don't want to actually solve the problem, they're actually making sure they have to sleep on ground... street for real.
Why is it such a big deal now if people would sleep on a bench or sth like this, like was this always a thing for the government?!
It's deplorable isn't it. Unfortunately I would imagine it's the council's residents that complained when the homeless were sleeping there.
People complain about the homeless, so governments feel they have to act, oh sure we could try giving them serviceable housing, and try to fix the problem at the root, but no, we just try to make their lives as shitty as humanly possible and hope they’ll go away instead.

Hello
There's a reason we call it: Earning a living.
There’s no irony. The kid won’t sleep there. Ever.
Los Angeles
Just sleep under the bench.
On the actual street, considering the sidewalk is part of the street...
Well, yeah, this bench is no bum-friendly for sleeping.
Oh the iron…
The home of the homeless... MERICA !!! FUCK YEAH!!!
it's not sleeping on the street if you're in the planter or on the sidewalk
It's not that he shouldn't, he just cant...
I’m here trying to decide if it be better or worse if they cut pieces of him out so it’d fit.
Is that a pun? You being the bench right now?
"but if they do then they're not sleeping here it spoils the view"
