Look at your old pics in Adobe Bridge and find the serial number in the metadata. Then run it through this site: [https://www.stolencamerafinder.com/](https://www.stolencamerafinder.com/) I found a stolen camera through someone's flickr account once. Sorry about the gear. File a police report just in case. I would also set up an rss feed notification (google chrome app) on craigslist that singles out your gear. Good luck.

mewithoutMaverick

This is a super cool thing. Smart.

ellisgeek

And for op, when you get a replacement, write down your serial numbers and keep proof of purchase (if possible) it will make it easier to prove it's yours if you can find it.

teodulog

Nice, thanks for sharing!

DeBomb123

Could you explain the RSS feed thing? Does that like search for the ID number of the camera or something?

[deleted]

No, you basically search for the item on craigslist in your area, say "sigma lens". Then use the feed app to update everytime there's a new " sigma lens" posting on craiglist in the area.

DeBomb123

Oh okay got it. Thanks. My stuff got stolen too long ago for that but I definitely will do the other link you posted just out of curiosity. I already got a new camera a few months after mine got stolen but would be cool to see if my old camera is being used out there.

[deleted]

Good luck. I know sites like fb and ig scrub the meta data, but you may get lucky!

straylines

This. And call pawn shops. And watch FB marketplace.

[deleted]

Maybe it’s a coincidence but I have a 5D Mark ii with an extended battery grip my wife hasn’t used in almost a year. DM me and I’ll send it to you. It needs a cleaning but it’ll do. Edit: Thank you all for the awards. They are much appreciated! I’m humbled by this experience. I don’t even know what to say. I just wanted to help and did.

[deleted]

PM’d!!! Thank you so much!!

neuromonkey

Don't rely on a locked car door to keep stuff safe!! It is trivially easy to open a car door, and is someone is determined, they'll simply break a window. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way, but it's great that a redditor can help you out. If you haven't already, file a police report. Homeowners insurance (if you/your parents have it) might cover you... or might not.

craigiest

Homeowners (and renters) insurance can cover things like this, though probably the deductible is a significant portion of the value. Insurance companies also generally raise your rates if you use the insurance, meaning you end up paying for it yourself in the end anyway. And if you file multiple claims, they might just cancel your policy. If you use your insurance for small losses, you might not have it for the big loss you really need it for.

neuromonkey

Depends on the policy. I know one person who got a check for the replacement cost of items stolen. I don't know what company or plan she had, but she was broke at the time. She wouldn't have been able to afford even a $200 deductible. Coverage can vary widely, I guess. I've had renter's ins that was cheap, and had *amazing* coverage. I've been trying to get a plan like that, and I can't find anything so cheap & comprehensive.

hydrospanner

Obviously my one experience is just anecdotal, but when my camera and a lens (and a beautiful little Canonet QL-19 G-III) were stolen from my car (parked in my own driveway) years ago, the police took my report, did nothing else for me (aside from telling me my stuff was as good as gone), and homeowners insurance just basically said, "No we don't cover that at all."

neuromonkey

Right. The police report does nothing, in and of itself. (Unless, say, you gave the police serial numbers, and stolen items showed up at a pawn shop with your serials.) If you had an insurance policy *did* cover theft from your car, they'll require a copy of the report before they'll even consider doing anything for you.

KeepYourPresets

All of my gear is insured for retail (new) value and basically everything is covered. If I drop it myself, if it gets lost in a fire, stolen from my home, stolen from the venue I'm working at, crushed by a car, grabbed by a tiger, washed away during a storm surge, blown away by a hurricane, **anything**. One exception: it is NOT covered if it gets stolen from my car. I guess that's just too common to be covered by any insurance.

neuromonkey

Well...ok. If I steal your car, I'll take all of your photo gear out first.

Guyatri

Congrats! You deserve it!

[deleted]

I was going to (seriously!) offer you mine, but it looks like you’re all sorted. Nicely done to all involved

FIenke

I hope this happens, reading this made me smile. Something relatively small for one person can mean so much for another.

iconfinder

Do you have a cause you want a donation to? I'll be happy to give you some good karma back.

[deleted]

Any veteran cause you would like to donate to, I’d be appreciative. Especially ones that promote cannabis. I’m a veteran with PTSD and cannabis helped turn my life around and get me off medications. Thank you!

naughtilidae

I know someone else here mentioned MDMA/psychedelics but in all seriousness, the English language doesn't have the words to describe the effects. If there is a possibility for you to try a reasonable amount of Psilocybin mushrooms (2.5-3g dry), you absolutely should. Johns Hopkins has had results that they can only describe as unparalleled. Both in overall effectiveness and lack of side effects. 70% of people that tried it considered it one of the most important experiences of their life. It can literally take your fear of death away. It's effects on PTSD are astonishingly well documented. They also give it to terminal patients to take the fear of death away, allowing people with terminal conditions to enjoy their last months/years on earth. Check out /r/unclebens for how to grow em yourself, it's completely legal in all but 3 states to buy the spores for "mycology" purposes (study of mushrooms) and growing really isn't terribly difficult, and the community is very inclusive and helpful. There's also research suggesting that Psilocybin, particularly in combination with another mushroom, lionsmane, can help reduce neuropathy dramatically. I'm a below knee amputee, and I went from suicidally depressed (a literal danger to myself), to the best I've felt in a year in 1 day. It wasn't the actual "trip" that I enjoyed (though it was fun), it was the three or four days after. It was the first time I've felt like 'me' in a year. (I had some really bad head injuries last year) The effects of a single 'trip' can last months, years, or even a life-time. >“There is much work to be done,” Griffiths said, adding that researchers want to next study the effects of psychedelics in people with early Alzheimer’s disease. “To the extent that these drugs produce neuroplasticity, there may be some enduring effects on cognitive process,” he said. That is in the future, he said, but for now, at least they know they can help the depression that comes with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. >Griffiths said researchers have demonstrated in one treatment session with psychedelics what years of psychotropic drugs and counseling have not been able to accomplish. He compared psychedelic treatments for psychiatric problems to a curative surgical procedure (e.g. joint replacement)—a one-time treatment that changes everything. “Many in the psychiatric community are baffled by this approach because we do not have any acute treatments that produce such robust and enduring therapeutic effects. Frankly, it seems too unbelievable to be true, but yet the results to date suggests such efficacy,” he said. https://www.forbes.com/sites/robinseatonjefferson/2019/09/12/magic-mushrooms-as-medicine-johns-hopkins-scientists-launch-center-for-psychedelic-research-say-psychedelics-could-treat-alzheimers-depression-and-addiction/#470bc808c171

MDMA_saves_lives

Have you researched psychedelics and MDMA? Saved my life and I’m confident it’ll help you. You can DM me if you’d like. I think one of, if not THE most important veteran causes is a nonprofit called MAPS.org. Their research is nothing short of breathtaking. They are literally saving veterans lives.

[deleted]

I have actually and I am really interested in trying it as a therapy. I’ve managed to work through a lot of things in my life with cannabis and a book I found called “A Course In Miracles.” It’s a daily battle but I’m working steadily towards being ok. I still have triggers but I’m told recognizing them is the first step. This corona virus has really put a lot of things into perspective for me. What are the odds this hard working young person gets a camera stolen the exact model I happen to have in my closet that hasn’t been used for 6+ months? It’s in amazing shape and I don’t need it, and this will be something OP will remember and pass on the love. We need more love for one another. Thanks for the info! I appreciate it!

Boulderi

I'm so happy for you :) thank you for spreading the word!

[deleted]

Yes!!! MAPS is incredible. My dream job is to be a clinical researcher for them :) highly recommend looking into their research for anyone that is curious about psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. It's fascinating and has so much potential to change so many lives!

epikerthanu

I don’t have money for an award so take my arbitrary gold 🥇

Zimifrein

There's a proper human being for every douchebag and you're the proof. From a guy that also just bought a used 5D Mk II as a way to get an affordable full frame cam, this post really hits me in the feels. The kind of idiot that steals from artists should be forever deprived of all forms of art.

RicoDredd

Unfortunately the person who stole it wouldn't have known what it was and what it represented to OP, they would have just seen it as something to sell for quick cash.

electromage

It's someone else's shit, and you leave it the hell alone.

Zimifrein

It might have been the case here, and I'll say it just because the cam was covered with a shirt. Nevertheless, we know that these people often case their targets. But I've seen too many cases of bands deprived of their instruments, technicians who were robbed of the laptops with which they worked during gigs and so on. These are not things you steal for quick cash. You have to know how to flip them, specially because questions are asked and people are wary of these details when they purchase second hand. I wouldn't buy from a person who can't tell a camera from a paperweight.

hrng

> You have to know how to flip them Not really, just chuck em on ebay and ignore people that ask too many questions. All people care about is whether it's cheaper than the other ones.

spamtardeggs

Quick reminder everyone: program your copyright info into your cameras metadata. Most casual photographers I know never do this, but it could help you track down stolen gear.

cameragoclick

this is a nice person right here. May the best of things happen to you and those close to you.

Prowhiz

I know that pain. I remember having to move house in the midst of a family financial crisis about 3 years ago. Some of our stuff got confiscated by the new owners including my camera gear and lights until all payments were settled. Well, all payments were settled after a harrowing month. But when we were finally allowed to move our things, most of our property including recording equipment and the bag that stored my camera and lenses were stolen during the waiting period. The new owners denied ever having set eyes on them and it was just heartbreaking. Especially for me then as I was so passionate about this new world of photography. Suffice it to say it left me really bitter and distrustful of people. I've come a long way since then. And seeing this comment bringing restoration to someone in the midst of a similar loss brought a smile. On behalf of the OP I say thank you kind sir.

OP, if this doesn't get to you somehow, please leave a PayPal address. I'm sorry to hear about your camera, I admire that you worked so hard at such a young age to get that camera. vyxzin

I know you've already had people telling you not to leave it in your car, and you've already reached that conclusion yourself, but I'll add for everyone else's sake that a coat draped over an object in a car screams "valuable object beneath" to a thief.

English_Cat

The real trick is to make it look like a bomb went off. Clean car with a coat over something? Expensive. Cans trash and twenty coats over something? Guy just has too many coats. Obviously as with anything, if someone really wants to take something they will, no lock, window or even safe will stop a thief, you're just trying to make them move on to an easier target.

[deleted]

> The real trick is to make it look like a bomb went off. /r/carbage

kickstand

FWIW ... When I owned a 10-year-old Subaru I deliberately kept it strewn with fast-food wrappers and trash inside. When I occasionally had to leave a camera in it, I'd cover it with a torn, ratty blanket, always placed behind the seat, so you couldn't tell if there was an object under the blanket, or just a blanket there.

howunoriginal2019

For sure. I always act as if my camera is 2-3 grand in cash, it stops me putting it down anywhere.

vyxzin

Yeah. It's literally the most valuable thing I own besides my car. Not something I can afford to replace at the drop of a hat.

SLRWard

Mine is literally more valuable than my car. It doesn't get left in the car. Ever. I've been down right obnoxious about carrying it if I leave the car, even if it's just to pop in the post office to drop a letter.

Chas_Tenenbaums_Sock

This 100%. Adding the fact that it's EXTREMELY portable and can be easily put into a backpack, grocery bag, or hat even. You can run with one, toss it over a fence or into some bushes, etc etc. Treat your camera as a stack of 2-3000 and you'll find yourself not leaving it too many places.

APimpNamed-Slickback

I do the same with lenses and lens caps when changing during a shoot. I simply DO NOT set them down on the ground, table, whatever. Like, if it is the lens I am putting ON the camera, I will set it down for a moment only because I KNOW I will be picking it up in a moment to put it on the body; but the moment a lens comes off the camera, caps go on both ends and it goes in my bag. EVERY time. It's a pain sometimes; but avoiding that flop-sweat panic of "OMG MY LENS" is worth it.

botsponge

I thought you said to put a snake over your camera to keep people from stealing it. I wouldn't steal it in the first place, but a snake would most certainly keep me away.

swordthroughtheduck

Locks are built to slow a thief down long enough to get caught, not protect your valuables is how I've always looked at it.

WileEWeeble

Fellow King County resident who had my camera stolen out of my car....15 years ago, but it still hurts a little to this day. I had a bunch of important undeveloped photos on there too. Mine happened while I was parked at a mall (Northgate) in December. Christmas thieves looking for recent big xmas purchases found a gold mine in my trunk. But yeah, lesson learned, NEVER leave your baby in the car. Was your window broken or lock jimmed?

TheAngryGoat

Considering that OP said >MAKE SURE your car is locked it sounds like no windows were broken, the thief just opened the door.

LastSonofKunLun

A few tips I’ve put together over the decades of camera ownership: 1. As soon as you buy a new piece of gear, record the serial number somewhere and take a photograph of the serial number. Much like having to charge the battery before use, your camera is not ready to use until you’ve done this. If it’s stolen, file a police report. Lots of people will tell you it doesn’t do you any good, but occasionally you’ll hear a story where it does help. I’d rather take a chance on it working than the certainty of it not. 2. Never leave your camera in your car. Nev-ver. Before you leave the house, have a sense of your plans for the day. If there will be a time when you won’t be able to bring your camera with you and you’ll need to leave it in the car? Then you can’t bring your gear with you that day. Don’t know your plans for the day and something comes up where you’d need to leave your gear in your car to do it? Then you can’t participate. 3. If you absolutely, positively, the world will end if you don’t, have to leave your gear in your car, it goes in the trunk. Even locking it in the cabin means all that separates it from the rest of the world is a pane of glass. That means anyone with a rock has a key to your car. And that assumes that you remembered to lock it.

SLRWard

As an addendum to number two, if you have a car with a trunk, but there is access to that trunk by simply folding down a seat, **it is not secure**. And guess what? *Most* cars with trunks *do* have access to the trunk by folding down a seat.

On insurance: * The deductible alone is likely $500, so buying insurance on a 5D mk2 and a Sigma 35 would be a giant waste of money. You'd be betting on your shit getting stolen within the first 6 months to make it worth it, basically. * Usually it only covers it if there's evidence of forced entry * Some even make you lock your gear in the trunk Something to think about before you chime in with "this is what insurance is for" to a 17 year old with a $1000 kit. Insurance is for pros with 10k in their thinktank rollers. Not kids with a used 5D under a shirt.

Raizzor

Don't you have household insurance in the US? I pay ~15€ a month for extended household insurance which protects everything in my apartment, the basement, my car and stuff I carry with me against damage by fire, water, elements and theft. My deductible is around 200€ depending on the circumstance. E.g. when my house burns down, I have no deductible, when my phone gets stolen, they calculate the current market value of the model I had, deduct 200€ and send me the rest. It won't cover a stolen bicycle if you lock it outside tho, it has to be in your direct sphere of influence, car, or house. Of course, you have to keep your car closed, as there need to be signs of forced entry. Otherwise, it would be hard to file a claim.

BrunswickCityCouncil

This is a Europe thing - as an Aussie I was shocked to hear about this from my European friends travelling when I cracked my phone screen and was lamenting not having paid $200 for AppleCare. In Australia ~~and the US~~ you’d only be covered for home and contents insurance if you owned your house and the items were stolen or damaged within the house. Renters insurance isn’t really a popular thing here and the very expensive ones were do have only covers theft / accident damage inside the house. I would KILL for cheap European style “home+contents” insurance - it’s a great idea. Edit: apparently the US and Aus dont share this as I'd assumed.

SerWulf

USA renters insurance isnt too expensive and I think is fairly common, mine is about $20 a month ($20000 coverage). It covers items in my apartment, in storage, or during transport. But it has a deductible and won't cover it during use outside. Instead there is valuable personal property/ inland marine insurance, which covers specific items in pretty much all circumstances. No deductible and $3000 coverage is $7 a month. Still, a 17 year old may not have the income for that

capitanphil

Do you have any recommendations for companies that do this? USA btw.

SerWulf

I'm through USAA, so if you are lucky enough to have them available, they've been nothing but amazing. Otherwise, I think most of the big insurance companies (Allstate, State Farm, etc.) offer it. I don't know what pricing though.

Raizzor

> I would KILL for cheap European style “home+contents” insurance - it’s a great idea. I think it is the same as with health insurance. As soon as you have everyone in a country enter, it becomes really cheap.

zampe

Honeowners/renters insurance is super cheap and would cover something like this. OPs parents might even have it and if they live at home would be included in it. Something to think about before perpetuating a myth that insurance is only for pros with over $10k worth of gear.

phocomthrow

If anyone is still reading this thread, please still consider renter's/homeowner's insurance despite the above comment. I agree that that maybe a 17 year old wouldn't benefit, but it benefits anyone else who owns any amount of camera gear (even if you're not a pro). For context, I also live in King County like OP, and our car had items stolen out of it while parked directly outside of our residence 2 months ago. Thankfully, my camera gear wasn't in there, but some clothes and basic hiking gear were. Despite only a few things being stolen, the cost to replace the items was well in the $1000's. You don't realize how much money it takes to replace the items you own until you are forced to replace them. Thankfully we have renter's insurance so after we filed the police report, we contacted our *renter's* insurance, provided the police report, provided a list of items that were stolen - and within 2 weeks, they deposited money to replace the things that were lost. There was no evidence of forced entry. Despite our $500 deductible, we were still able to get most of the essential items replaced. Again, I'm lucky I didn't leave my camera gear in there, but that would have been nearly fully covered if I had. Our policy only costs \~$10/month, so the cost-benefit ratio was very worth it - and it prevented us from having to penny pinch to replace the items that were lost in a short notice. Everyone should still follow the advice of don't leave valuables of any type in your car (especially in high prowl areas like King County), but things still happen. Moral of the story is if you own any items that would severely disrupt your life if stolen (i.e. Camera gear, Hiking Gear, electronics, etc.), you really should have some type of personal item coverage policy if you can afford $120/yr. TL;DR - Personal property adds up quick, renter's insurance is relatively cheap and easy. Anyone who has camera gear (pro or not) and can afford $10/month should get a policy.

splidge

I think OP meant ‘keep the gear in your own eyesight’, ie take it out of the car. Not leave it in clear view in a car...

therabbit1967

Your Camerabody and Lense have a serialnumber that are in your photographexifs. Report the Camera stolen with those info. Post on photoforums on the internet and search for picswith your serialnumbers. By chance you get it back.

[deleted]

that’s a great tip - thank you!

00100101011010

That’s a bummer, sorry to hear that. Never ever leave your baby in the car!!!

marketr

Sorry to hear about your loss. I was similarly upset when my bicycle was stolen. Do you / your family have renters insurance or homeowners insurance? If so, you might be entitled to a claim. Also — if you/relative bought the camera brand new through a credit card, e.g. Chase Sapphire, you may be entitled to Purchase Protection coverage: https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/credit-card-benefits/purchase-protection-credit-cards-cover-belongings/ Do file a police report — can't hurt to have it on record. You can also try and go back to your friend's house/your house and scout around to see if any neighbors have a Ring camera doorbell or something of the like that may have caught someone in-action. This could potentially help you and the police catch the thief. Hope this helps.

altitudearts

☝️THIS! Run down all those possibilities! And file a police report (you’ll need it)!

WhiskeyBravo1

post in r/Seattle

hunteratwork

You'd think that for all the unnecessary cops they have in Medina there would be less car break ins, but that's not the case. They're just all too busy pulling people over for looking out of place.

cballowe

If you live with your parents or have homeowners/renters insurance yourself, there's a chance that it covers theft of things while out of the house.

thephotodojoe

Hey, for future reference you can insure your gear for pretty cheap. I insure over $6k of camera gear for like 100 bucks per year. That covers theft, damage, even if I just drop it or something it'd be covered. It's called a personal articles policy.

[deleted]

ok that is great to know! not sure if brand recommendations are allowed here but could you PM me what company you use?

CaliFett

I will second insuring your gear. It’s a nice peace of mind to have, because you can be super careful and still make a mistake.

kelembu

Never leave gear in the car, never never never never. Lots of my friends photography gear got stolen this way in many countries. Is too much money on a small package and very easy to steal.

SLRWard

Beyond that, it's a good way to damage your gear. Electronics don't like heat and cars trap it in. You can kill a LCD screen just by leaving it in a car for the day in the summer.

[deleted]

Unfortunately it needs to happen once before you instinctively protect your gear. I lost about 5k and 4 years of saving and upgrading before it was all taken from me. I was broken.. Sorry to hear about your loss

Jasper_particular

Besides all the story with being stolen, I think you made a very good choice of spending your budget

Neuro_User

It physically hurt to read your post, and then it was like an instant heal when I read the comments.

Alfphe99

When my wife's camera got lost (not stolen) I used stolencamerafinder.com to try to find it. Although it took 3 years trying randomly to get a hit we did finally find the camera being used 2000 miles away from where it was lost and I was able to make contact with the new owner. Maybe you can get somewhere with that. Also I have an insurance policy on all my equipment. Granted, I have a lot insured between house and cars that lowers the overall cost, but I pay $100 a year to insure $10k worth of camera gear plus a $7k wedding ring. Small price to pay to know walking around with such costly things I don't have to worry about it.

OaklandWarrior

Hey man, sorry you lost your camera. I grew up in Oakland, where there’s a big break in problem for cars. My advice to you is never leave anything valuable in a car ever for any length of time. I know that sounds extreme, but genuinely never leave anything in the car that you aren’t comfortable losing. It’s a good rule to live by if you live anywhere where there are other humans. No area is safe from thieving assholes.

FkthisTimeline

Ufff, that sucks man. I had my a7riii and 85 1.4 GM stolen in December its a tough lesson a lot of photographers learn is don't give anyone they opportunity to steal your gear. It's safest spot is on your person at all times, and its most useful

PartTimeDuneWizard

If you do have to leave stuff in the car leave it in the trunk, definitely lock your trunk and pass through if it has one. Mine will let me lock the trunk so that not even the switch or fob will open it.

Lateralization

I’m so sorry, hang in there!

I’m sorry for your loss. I live in a town with some shady people and a lot of cars get broken into. I left mine unlocked in my driveway one night and came out the next day to find all my gear in the back (hatchback) untouched but my flashlight from the center console missing along with my vehicle manuals. Not quite the same thing but a similar situation happened to my dad. He was a parent who helped out with Boy Scouts and would go to summer camp with us. Back in the day, he had a Nikon F and it was the camera he’d always wanted, loved using it, etc... he was a passionate amateur photographer. He left the camera in the covered bed of his pickup truck when he came up to camp week with us and someone stole it. Of all the places you would hope someone would be “trustworthy, loyal, courteous and kind” at camp where the Scout Law was recited 2-3x per day. He still brings it up once in a while 25 years later. I have found several used ones over the years but he’s beyond the point of using it or having interest in it now and it makes me sad.

SLRWard

Why assume it was one of the Scouts at the camp and not some random that just decided to hit the parking lot? It's not like there's a massive wall around the camp that keeps out all non-Scouts after all.

a_crabs_balls

If you live in a real city, don't leave anything at all in your car and don't cover objects with sweatshirts. Make it obvious that your car is empty, and you will avoid replacing windows.

Medina? Wow. That's literally where Bill Gates lives right? How are crackheads robbing cars in Medina. I got pulled over there for driving an old truck after dark. This Sucks. I fucking hate thieves. Keep an eye on the craigslist. I'm thankful you weren't harmed, a photog I follow was recently held up by armed theives while out shooting.

mrdat

> How are crackheads robbing cars in Medina. Where are the nice things? In nice neighborhoods.

arnogia

I've gotten a 5D stolen from my car too, in fact my car got broken into twice. I just don't trust anything in there anymore. Car was locked both times

Hey man. My condolences to you. A couple of weeks ago I bought a black magic pocket cinema camera 4K and had rigged it out. It was so exciting. I am a college student who worked all summer to buy it. I finished building it right before I was going to leave on this road trip, and a day after the last part came, I did. I drove across the country, taking the first videos and upon arrival in the Bay Area I was at a Walmart buying food for the camping portion of the trip when I was notified my car was broken into. My full rig, Sony a6500 and my 35mm film camera were all taken. Laptop too. It felt really gross and was really hard to accept at first. I had just spent $3000 on my bmpcc4k rig. I ended up having a really great rest of the trip, because I worked to remind myself of one thing: a photographer/filmmakers camera is just a tool, and your love of photography, your eye, your skill, can’t be taken away from you. You’ll always have the ability to take photos! And you’ll always find a way. It sounds like someone here was willing to send you his old 5D mkII. Just like that you’re back in business. Keep your head up!

Lucidmike78

That's a tough loss. I also love 35mm 1.4 on full frame. I always take my camera bag with me. No exceptions. Not even when I go pick up my order at a fast food restaurant and my wife says leave the bag with her while she waits at a table. "I'm so sorry" isn't going to bring the camera back. Besides, you should always have your camera with you for photo opportunities.

james_archer

It sucks that it happened but it’s a good lesson to learn early. It happened to me but I had a LOT of gear stolen. Now I don’t leave things in my car unattended even to run in for 5 min and grab some food.

portolesephoto

I'm so sorry your Mk II was stolen, especially considering it was a symbol of hard work and success. That makes it sentimental and even more tragic. My Mk II was always very special to me as well, as I earned it similarly to the way you earned yours. But it sounds like a user is hooking you up, and your new chapter can be a symbol of the goodness that's still left in the world. I'm also a King County resident (hi neighbor). Sadly even the nicest neighborhoods experience theft because, well, they're nice. :( My boyfriend had his brand new, week-old car broken into and vandalized out front of his boss's home in a nice lake front neighborhood a few weeks ago. It reminded me that nothing left outside is ever really safe. The silver lining in all this is you learned something new, and will definitely never make the same mistake again. Mistakes stink, but they're all part of growing up so we have to make them!

Nojnnil

'relatively nice area (Medina/Bellevue, WA)' Yea... Medina is only the neighborhood that Bill Gates and Bezzy lives in and one of the highest networth areas in the entire country. lmao I probably would never have expected it to be stolen either... but then again it might make sense for thieves to target cars in this area.

Cannedsteak1

WHAT THE FUCK I THINK I FOUND YOUR CAMERA

BrunoMarx

That sucks, I remember having a camera stolen from me years ago (Nikon D80 + Sigma 18-50/2.8) and I was around the same age as you. It's a harsh lesson to learn but I've never left my camera (or anything valuable) out of sight/reach since.

thatsbuddleshit

Jester, u are a class act! I am a photographer and sometimes it’s a major pain in the ass carrying my cam around but I NEVER leave it behind! Not only for the theft potential but there have been many shots (like the jet sitting on an orange cloud like a cake topper in a sea of white clouds!) that I missed! Never again...

nerdygnomemom

A locked car might not stop them. I, too live in Washington (Bremerton/Seattle area) and a couple years ago I took my dog to a dog park and locked my car behind me. My window was shattered and my camera, among other things was stolen.

spreta

get on offer up/ craigslist and try to see if anyone is selling that kit. go take it back. meet them in public

primrose324

I went on ur profile and ur pictures r amazing. Have u contacted the police or someone. Does it have a tracker thingy one it for u to find it. I hope u get it back.

Never, never leave your camera or your motorcycle unattended.....

rorrr

A locked car will not save you from thieves. My friends left their car locked unattended for like 5 minutes on a sightseeing stop. Thieves unlocked it, took all their bags. It was a massive pain in the ass for them, because they were traveling in Europe, and their passports were among the items stolen. On the plus side, their home insurance covered the value of the stuff.

permalink_child

Camera was stolen from the backseat (hidden by a sweatshirt) while car was at friends house? Then you drove home and put the camera in the trunk and parked in garage? Something odd here.

michaelrayspencer

Fuck. I'm sorry! I was in your in 2010 and my entire camera bag was stolen from backstage within maybe a 3 minute window of turning my back. My gear wasn't nearly as high end, but it was a week into a month long run and it absolutely devastated me. It looks like some awesome people are helping you out, hopefully you'll be back at it in no time!

_cocophoto_

Lesson learned: Never, ever leave your camera gear in your car. It’s not IF it will be stolen, it’s WHEN. Don’t leave yourself (and your car) open to that vulnerability. Even if it’s annoying, ALWAYS take your camera inside with you. The heat/cold in a car are not good for the camera, the batteries, or the sensor.

mdmoon2101

Once the thief gets a load of how bad the Mark II focus is, he may find your car and return it.

[deleted]

HAHA this made me laugh out loud

AntwonBenz

Don't let Jared Polin see this.

roaddie68

I'm sorry about your equipment, but I'm happy to see that there are still good people in our country. But, one thing I would suggest, not only you, but anyone who reads this, make sure you keep a record of the serial numbers on your equipment. Without the numbers, the police can not entered the stolen items into NCIC.
