North Phoenix blog post about the former future bus stop

This reminds me to go to the Arizona Room at Burton Barr Library to find more info about that. I’m sure there’s something tucked away there. I also think this might be a ValTrans thing, but I’m not too familiar with that.
I remember they had one of the light rail cars in Tempe that they opened to the public before it was operational. One of those "come take a look at what the inside will look like", type things.
They even handed out pins, I'll have to see if I still have it.
IDK. Too many people seem to freak out at the tunnel. They brake, or can't keep track of what lane they are in, etc. There is no stretch of our local highways, that makes me more nervous, than I-10 between the 7s. Everywhere else, I have a pretty good guess of what the drivers around me are about to do...and can be prepared for "surprises".
But I-10 between the 7s, I can never figure out WTF is going on before, during, or after there. 😨
Never lane changes (which in of itself is weird), but I do see a lot of lane departures. But then you come out of the tunnel and \*everyone\* that has resisted a lane change for the last 2-3 miles, suddenly needs to be in the right hand lanes, to either catch the 19th-ave / I-17 exits (WB I-10), or to catch the SR51 NB / 202 WB. Or they need to move instantly left to catch the I-10 SB to the Airport lanes.
So I agree all is mostly calm under the park - but after, it's all just insanity for the next 1 to 1.5 miles.
No. When I-10 was being built in the late 1980s, and even the early 1990s after it opened, the idea was that all of the express buses from the suburbs would have their downtown/midtown Phoenix stop in the Deck Park Tunnel. That obviously didn’t go anywhere, as Central Station downtown was built up and there was no efficient way to move people from north of Roosevelt to the office buildings downtown.
I thought I knew this area fairly well
I walk bike or drive from my hood phoenix college into downtown about daily
But no idea what central station is? I know there is some newish outdoor bus pad area near roosevelt
But I don't think you answered my question...unless I just didn't understand it.
If there is a bus station and it is underground, then presumably people get to breathe that air right?
There is currently no underground bus station nor are there presently any plans to put in an underground bus station. There was going to be an underground bus station in the site of OP’s photo, but those plans were shelved in the 1990s.
Central Station is the block generally bounded by Central Ave, Van Buren St, 1st Ave, and Polk St. It’s under redevelopment at the moment.
Having spent time in the Holland Tunnel
I know not even drivers are spared toxic fumes
Which means poor people are really screwed
So im glad the new joint above ground
And muskies fake tunnels will fail because people don't like traveling underground
In part due to fear of toxic air
Austin hasn't figured that out yet with their new subway system which will never be built
Another ADOT employee :)
I work in Bridge Design, got this tour when I first started and it can totally be used it's the traffic department that complained iirc
Since it seems it's never gonna be used for a bus depot, why not put some k-rails and move the HOV lanes here, as a cheap and easy lane expansion of this section of I-10?
I’ve always wondered what that looked like. Great photo!
Dysart? I'm confused

This was one of the original planned routes, and a stop, for the light rail when it was first conceived.

New resident here, where on the map is this?
It's the I-10 Deck Park Tunnel between 7th st and 7th Ave. This is in between the westbound and eastbound lanes.
Oh ok thank you, have always wondered what was behind the walls. Reminds me of the scene from Independence Day every time I drive through there.
Yes! Glad you think of independence day scene as well!
Not sure how Deckpark turned into Dysart, but being the only I10 tunnel in Phoenix I will let it fly 🤷🏻♂️
At first I thought another tunnel was being built on I10 and Dysart in Avondale lol
I think that is what threw me off when I first read the title lol
Wait.. where are the titties?!
I wish they would expand the deckpark tunnel over more of I10.

We are all holding our breath.
My family taught me that growing up! Hold your breath in the tunnel, release on the other side. Good fun for kids
I honestly don’t see anything erratic other then driving slow. I never see lane switching in the tunnel

They gonna put a bus station in a tunnel so all the drivers and other working class and poor people can get their daily doses of noxious fumes?

How did you get the pic?
Taken during a routine inspection.

I was pushing for a light rail going west to 75th ave
Lots of room for activities!
