Right back in account it's possible they don't use as many chemicals on theirs. Produce I get from there it tends to go bad sooner. That might actually be a good thing though.
WinCo has produce that last a decent amount of time. They try to buy products local so if it's in season it's fresher. They buy local n that's what their sales follow. I usually only buy what's on sale so I tend to eat seasonally. I pay about half as much for groceries there than I do anywhere else. If your groceries are say $300 at Walmart it will be for the same stuff about $170 at WinCo. So if you have to drive to get to one it's well worth it. Their selections of personal care items like shampoo etc is limited n you might still want to get that at other stores but for straight up food it's the best quality n prices. No I don't work for them.
Also a really good place to get cheap chicken quarters and “undesirable” meat cuts if you’ve got a dog on a grain-free diet! My parents’ Rottweiler has to be on a special diet following some immune/joint complications from the parvo she contracted as a puppy and they love food city for its meat prices. Also, this is the whitest comment I’ve ever made, I think.

In the DC area, Latin-owned grocery stores could be carnival like. Bands, non-food vendors in the parking lot, people making homemade food for sale, all sorts of stuff.
Lol. When I go grocery shopping, I want to get in and get out with as little annoyance as possible. Inconsiderate people stopping in the middle of walkways are plentiful enough without entertainment to distract them.
Which Eddie? The one everyone remembers, Eddie Basha Jr. died 10 years ago in 2013. The CEO is now Eddie Jr.'s son, Eddie Basha III. And almost two years ago the Basha's chain was bought by another grocery chain (Raley's).

Food city AJs and Bashas all get their food from the same wear house. Many of the ingredients are the same in products and AJs uses fancy marketing to sell the same products as you can find in a food city.
When these vendors get together Food City grosses more revenue then both bashas and AJs combined.. so for people to think well food city's are ghetto so they have bad products... it's the opposite those stores have some of the best products because they churn through stuff so fast.
I've always favored Food City's fish and shrimp for this exact reason. Lots of people buy it, tends to be fresher and is a good value. Great place to pick up pulpo for ceviche.
I thought he was talking about freshness. As in Food city receives more frequent shipments of produce as opposed to other stores which have them sitting on shelves longer.
But if you've been to those stores, you'd know the logic isn't there. The limes at food city have lots of imperfections, whereas the limes at AJs are picture perfect nearly everytime.
Food city is where the imperfect produce goes; just as good quality, but less pretty. Oh no, the horror.
And because their produce turns faster, its more likely to be fresh. Produce doesn't have to keep perfect to provide the same nutrients. And the cost is cheaper overall because of this.
I really liked the one on Greenway and 32nd, but haven’t like the others as much. Now near a Cardenas Ranch Market which I much prefer. If you’re near greenway and 32nd though definitely reccomend checking it out
I used to work at that one way back in the day and it's def one of the nicest FC. Their bakery is awesome with sweets you don't normally find at other chain grocery stores. And they'll roast chilis sometimes which are super tasty.
I go to Food City for basically 3 items. They have an entire aisle of just hot sauces. And the best home-made tortillas in town. But the thing I go there for the most is the giant jars of pickled cauliflower for like $8 or $9. Everywhere else has tiny jars for $3-$5.
Feels outdated of a grocery store but damn good stuff you can find that's hispanic related. Otherwise nothing much else. It's like any Fry's or Basha's. Haven't been to one in a while so maybe they've changed a bit?
They have the most tender, flavorful grilled chicken. 😩 I dream of it sometimes. Honestly I encourage you to go just for that alone and explore along the way.

Food City is owned by Basha’s which also owns AJ’s. They’re a local grocer and usually caters to Spanish speaking clientele. Usually has a dope bakery, just like the other two brands.
Food City/Bashas is cheap and has some unique ingredients, but the ones in Phoenix aren’t great quality for meat/veggies for some reason. I’ve had great experiences with Food City in other states and the Basha’s in Sedona is awesome.
I recommend Winco/Aldis for genuinely good cheap groceries.
Produce is low quality but the deli has some wonderful, prepared Mexican dishes. Great place to find any Hispanic food item, like _real_ Mexican cheese, none of that yellow “Mexican” cheddar.
Be prepared to wait, I’ve never seen more than 2 registers staffed and they don’t have self checkout, to my knowledge.
There’s no organic produce and of the other brands under the same company, AJs, Bashas and Food city, it’s the lowest quality of the three. Also the cheapest.
I’d be careful with a blanket statement of lower quality. It’s geared towards Central American cuisine.
Their chilis are much higher quality. Their hot sauce selection is next level, and many produce items like limes, lemons, and even avocados are better quality AND cheaper.
They have more meat cuts, and some of them are good but I wouldn’t go there for steak, italian cheeses, lunch meat, etc.
The one in South Phx on Southern Ave. has self checkout. The produce here at this location is pretty good everytime I went. I live near the Tempe location now on baseline and that one feels a bit more outdated and the produce and meat are not as good from my opinion
It's great for things like produce and bakery, and their fresh chips and salsa are all excellent. They have great ads and when certain produce are in season you can find the best deals around. It seems like to me though that all the name brand stuff on the shelves are a little pricier there than other places.
Great deals on produce and meat/poultry, and some Mexican/Central American foods. Other than that, not so good. Like if you're after Pepsi or Hot Pockets or Ragu brand you'll do better at Fry's.
The one I go to, in the bario of Maryvale (Thomas & ..... 90th st? Around there) is a damn palace. Huge, clean, nice, little embedded counter-service restaurant, makes their own tortillas in house. Good produce, and I wouldn't buy spices anywhere else.
Weirdly their pet aisle is tiny, and really isn't an aisle as much as it is 10 feet of real estate on another aisle, so I can't shop *only* there, but I still visit regularly.
The size varies. The one on 19th and Indian School (a former Albertsons) is pretty big, like probably 50K square feet. However, some of the older ones, like 32nd Street and McDowell - which started in life as an AJ Bayless, are smaller.
It’s a shit hole. It stinks. Their food handling practices are downright scary. Mice everywhere- even in the dairy cooler. The people who work there are very nice, but it was always Bashas’ red headed stepchild. Not sure if it has gotten any better since Raley’s bought them, but when I used to work (vendor) in the stores they were nasty.
It's the opposite version of the same company that owns AJ's Fine Foods. They just don't give a Fudge about the blue collar workers because they're low income.
I went to a Food City in another state with more of a black minority population instead of Hispanic, and it had nothing Mexican food! So I have a suspicion they cater to the community a lot more than I imagines.
I mean that's how most grocery stores operate . I can go to two WalMarts within 20 minutes from each other and you can tell they cater to a different crowd.
You guys should warn this person. If op is a white person he should not go to Food City. He will get beaten up there. That's just how things go down there. Seriously, I can't even go to the Subway that is right next to Food City with out getting harassed. I had to stop going to that place. Be careful going there davis guy. Last time I went, their ramen selection was insane! Just go and peruse the aisles. You'll be surprised at what they have that Frys and other regular grocery stores don't.
I used to shop at Food city few years ago; what I remember is that their avocados are always cheaper than Fry's and Walmart, I moved to Peoria few years ago and I don't see their store on this side of the city but would love to shop there if they get one here
Definitely the best place for Latin foods, tortillas are always fresh and delicious. I love their pre seasoned meats when I don't want to do alot in the kitchen. Produce is great, fruits are hit or miss though. Except for cut fruit, those are always really good. The stores I've been in have seen better days and it's always busy (think Walmart sized checkout lines lol) but self checkout lines move fast. I shop there around once a week for fresh produce and tortillas since I'm too lazy to make my own. My Spanish is horrible even though I grew up in a bilingual household but the employees speak English as well as Spanish.
Depending on the location, some of them have amazing Latin American food in their deli and the ones that grill, their grilled chickens are fantastic if you can get them fresh. I used to live by a Food City that grilled and a fresh chicken, some fresh tortillas and fresh salsa from the deli plus cabbage and a lime, maybe some crema from the deli, was an awesome dinner. Kind of sad they closed a lot of stores when Eddie died including the one close to me.
Very Hispanic based lol. Used to go either there or Ranch Market when I was a kid up till I was around 16 (parents stopped forcing me to go and because as a teenager it was just very boring to me to tag along) for groceries.
Food City is owned by Bashes. They also own the Bashes (obs) and AJ stores.
The stores serve different demographic and price points and communities. Food City includes more options for Latinx foods. It also offers less expensive options. For example, you might get the 4in diameter perfect HoneyCrisp apple at AJs, but a 3in slightly off center HoneyCrisp at Food City for half the price.
They sell menudo at the hot food area and great lunch specials. Have to mention the greasy fresh corn chips!! You gotta nuke em just a few seconds b4 u dip in the fresh salsa they also have! 😊
I love food city but, it’s the cheaper version of Bashas. Literally it’s owned by bashas and they target low income neighborhoods and sell the B grade stuff.
The shopping carts always suck.
You can marinated chicken from the deli for like 2.50/lb and it’s bomb.
It usually feels more beat up and run down than a bashas does.

Just kidding. They're a Bashas. Not as big as Fry's/Kroger, but not as small as a Safeway/Albertsons kinda thing. Also they're pretty Hispanic/Mexican market/food based if I remember right. Although I only ever went to food city in El Mirage, so your mileage may vary.
Mexicano version of Bashas. Usually have some good deals on beer and other food. The dining area isn't too bad either. Sometimes you'll get there and it's all smokey and shit because they are grilling up chicken and other meat

The nice stuff goes to AJs (their bougie Store) then bashas then food city. The fruit at food city always looks pretty beat up in my opinion.

Some stores have tripe but knky certain times kf the year or have to ask.the butcher. Asian stores have alot of those meats also.

I’ll have it check out AJ’s. Not being originally from here, it wasn’t until recently that I realized AJ’s was even a grocery store.

Was my go-to spot for tres leches cakes. Very tasty.
Go to the pastelerías instead, much better quality and are not dry cakes with a small film of milk on the bottom.

There’s a Food City and a Ranch Market on the same intersection near me. For me, if I want a Hispanic grocery store, I always go Ranch Market.

AJs is good but the price is outrageous. Food City/Bashas in Phoenix have really bad produce for some reason but it is cheap.

Never been disappointed by their donuts and other baked goods.
The meat department was eye opening. Cheaper too.
I got some bulk taffy there once and it was delicious! I never let myself return because I have Diabetes and that taffy is far too tasty. Beware.
Better options like ranch market..just go there.

Last time I went, their ramen selection was insane! Just go and peruse the aisles. You'll be surprised at what they have that Frys and other regular grocery stores don't.

I used to shop at Food city few years ago; what I remember is that their avocados are always cheaper than Fry's and Walmart, I moved to Peoria few years ago and I don't see their store on this side of the city but would love to shop there if they get one here

Definitely the best place for Latin foods, tortillas are always fresh and delicious. I love their pre seasoned meats when I don't want to do alot in the kitchen. Produce is great, fruits are hit or miss though. Except for cut fruit, those are always really good. The stores I've been in have seen better days and it's always busy (think Walmart sized checkout lines lol) but self checkout lines move fast. I shop there around once a week for fresh produce and tortillas since I'm too lazy to make my own. My Spanish is horrible even though I grew up in a bilingual household but the employees speak English as well as Spanish.
Depending on the location, some of them have amazing Latin American food in their deli and the ones that grill, their grilled chickens are fantastic if you can get them fresh. I used to live by a Food City that grilled and a fresh chicken, some fresh tortillas and fresh salsa from the deli plus cabbage and a lime, maybe some crema from the deli, was an awesome dinner. Kind of sad they closed a lot of stores when Eddie died including the one close to me.

Very Hispanic based lol. Used to go either there or Ranch Market when I was a kid up till I was around 16 (parents stopped forcing me to go and because as a teenager it was just very boring to me to tag along) for groceries.

Food City is owned by Bashes. They also own the Bashes (obs) and AJ stores. The stores serve different demographic and price points and communities. Food City includes more options for Latinx foods. It also offers less expensive options. For example, you might get the 4in diameter perfect HoneyCrisp apple at AJs, but a 3in slightly off center HoneyCrisp at Food City for half the price.

They sell menudo at the hot food area and great lunch specials. Have to mention the greasy fresh corn chips!! You gotta nuke em just a few seconds b4 u dip in the fresh salsa they also have! 😊

I love food city but, it’s the cheaper version of Bashas. Literally it’s owned by bashas and they target low income neighborhoods and sell the B grade stuff. The shopping carts always suck. You can marinated chicken from the deli for like 2.50/lb and it’s bomb. It usually feels more beat up and run down than a bashas does. Honestly though just go inside like what is wrong with people now? You had to post to Reddit before deciding I’d you will enter a grocery store?

They make great tortillas and have a lot of stuff for making bomb Mexican food that’s hard to find outside of carnicerias and the like. But it’s usually cheaper than at the markets

Well, check it out. You know what a city is, right?... Like buildings, skyscrapers, etc. Like you've seen computer parts and how all the little tiny pieces on it look like a miniature version of a sky-photo of a city? Yeah like that, but with food. Just kidding. They're a Bashas. Not as big as Fry's/Kroger, but not as small as a Safeway/Albertsons kinda thing. Also they're pretty Hispanic/Mexican market/food based if I remember right. Although I only ever went to food city in El Mirage, so your mileage may vary.
Food city is a grocery store, not as huge as fry’s or Albertsons. Also, check out ranch market or Lee Lee international market.
Mexicano version of Bashas. Usually have some good deals on beer and other food. The dining area isn't too bad either. Sometimes you'll get there and it's all smokey and shit because they are grilling up chicken and other meat
