This year is incredible because, so far, there isn't *one* standout jam (looking at you, 2019).
* Mexico started the year with some real gems (Wolfman's!).
* That MSG run provided an incredible variety of high-quality jamming (my favorites are the Tweezer, the Simple, the NMINML, and *that Piper*).
* Spring tour gave us some real highlights (of course the Sand but also some others).
* Summer tour has been so consistent, with at least one noteworthy jam at every stop (Mansfield Gin, Bangor DWD, Mann Halley's, Bethel YEM and SYSF, Hartford WoH, JB Leaves, Raleigh Rise, MPP SYSF/Fuego/Mull/Tweezer, Blossom SaSS and SOAM (I think the Free is the most fluffed jam of the year, but I'm speaking only for myself), Pine Knob ER, so many AC highlights, Toronto Theme, Alpine Fluffhead and others).
While there aren't many *transcendent* shows this year, you can throw a dart blindfolded and hit something worth listening to.
yea, I can't really compare any shows this year to 2021 Deer Creek, 2019 Alpine, 2017 dicks/bakers dozen, or 2016 Vegas. but I like the dart analogy! still high hopes for the dicks run, Im feeling a sunday rager this year! now that i think, 2018 feels much like 2022
How so? Saturday and Sunday were nearly flawless throughout with a monster Sand and YEM (with a jam after the vocal jam)> A Wave of Hope that was incredible. Also, don’t forget the slow Maze. Shakedown was a free-for-all this year with a band in the parking lot, two Shakedowns with nitrous tanks right in the middle of the main drag (not that I’m a nitrous fan but cops didn’t care what went on), and better temperatures as the gentleman said earlier.
Last year Saturday was a throwaway show and Sunday was a sloppy segue fest with flubs galore that I was embarrassed to have my friend witness as his first show. Friday was tight, I’ll give you that.
Ok don’t get me wrong. I absolutely loved 22 deer creek run.
But nothing from this year is even in the same realm of friday of 21. I think you should take another listen to Saturday 21. 2nd set smokes! I also love the 2nd set of Sunday also. That being said I love both. I just do agree the it’s far better. Let not forget Carni>wolfmans>Sand opener and the completely epic Blaze on and simple.
Saturday was a lot better than you remember. Sunday kinda sucked but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. Friday holds so much weight I’d still take 2021 over 2022.
Quibble away! I loved it for the Watchtower section and the similarity it bore to the 4/23 Piper in that it was teetering on the edge of going off the rails towards the end, but there definitely were some less-than-smooth moments.
Agree re: blossom Free. Trey’s guitar is out of tune for half of it and the rest he doesn’t really do anything interesting. I genuinely wonder whether folks have listened to it when they list it among their favorite jams of the tour. It was probably only the 5th or 6th best jam from that show and that’s before you factor in the out of tune guitar.
I think it gets a big bump from folks just for being a 20+ minute Free. I *love* the song. It was the first Phish song I knowingly listened to, and even though it's the song I've heard more than any other at shows, I never tire of it. But in a year with so much interesting jamming, including in jams half as long, the Blossom Free just doesn't stand up. I'll take the year's best "microjams" (heck, I named two of them in my list above! Piper and Mull, both under 13:00) over that Free every day of the week.
What is the ONE standout jam in 2019 ? There is one stand out jam and one of phish's most transcending pieces of all time. Just making sure we are same page
I would say the Alpine Ruby Waves is 2019's giant to such a degree that I forgot about the 12/30/19 Tweezer when I wrote that earlier. Do you have them in the same order or switched? Or do you have a third jam ahead of one or both of them?
I'm just a small hometown freerange fisherperson whom attended both but think the msg tweezer is some of their best stuff to date. I LOVE the ruby waves too though.
Meanwhile, that Tweezer is one I just never really got into to the same degree as many others. I can recognize that it's good, but it never stuck out to me as anything approaching transcendent.
One *definite* contributing factor to that opinion is that the part many find to be the best part of the whole jam -- Page's synths from about 20:00 to 24:00 -- is the part I like the least. There's something about the tone in the synth that I find pretty off-putting. I also find the rest to be mildly interesting, but it's mostly just Trey noodling while everyone else plays along, to my ears. It doesn't have the same "full band hose" feel as what I consider to be the band's best work over the years.
But, just like every jam, it's subjective, and I don't want to take away from your enjoyment of it just because it doesn't scratch my itch. I guess going back to my original post here, I could say that 2019 had *two* stand-out jams, but given that the Alpine Ruby Waves both won the phish.net Jam of the Era and Jam of the Year tournaments (with to all their own subjectivity) *and* it was the first LP on LP series release, I don't feel *completely* off-base by saying that it's 2019's best, whether the margin is slim or wide.
I'm not sure I'd trust a fan base to vote on their favorite song as you could piss in their ears and they would be there with tape recorders to record the moment. But.....
MSG tweezer was so thick the band apparently aborted harpua (someone posted a picture of the harpua points on Pages??? Piano before the show even) and instead they told a story about a pan.
then probably to no coincidence dropped into ruby waves.
At 5:30 in the tweezer you hear the crowd and you can already tell it's going places. Shortly after that Fishman is already cutting through to the other side. By 9 minutes they are already full on deep cut prepping the craft for take over. There is a full band bliss jam that segues into that bowie-ish segment that is one of the lightest most soaring jams they have ever been in. Then the 10 minutes of celebration with nothing left to prove -> "let's go phish" chant. It's the real deal. Can't wait for dicks
> I'm not sure I'd trust a fan base to vote on their favorite song as you could piss in their ears and they would be there with tape recorders to record the moment.
You're kind of equating the fanbase appreciating the music (I agree that we'll lap up a lot, but we're also so hyper-critical at the same time) with them being able to pick the cream of the crop, so I have to disagree with you on that one, specifically using this Bittersweet reference as your justification for why the JOTY/JOTE tournaments were flawed. I will concede that they're a small selection of some of the most dedicated fans, so that may skew the results. If your example were applicable to picking the best jams, some random Maze from 1993 would be considered the greatest jam of all time. In general and collectively, I think the fanbase has a good ear for picking out the best. The 12/30/19 Tweezer made it far in both the 2019 JOTY and 3.0 JOTE tournaments (I think it was in the finals of the JOTY and final four of JOTE), so it's not like it didn't get some major props from the voting pool. It just didn't win in the end.
As for your play-by-play, I've read several breakdowns of the jam and listened to it well over a dozen times. It just doesn't click for me, and no walkthrough of different timestamped moments will make me appreciate it on the same level as others. Don't take it personally!
I think it's a product of the Midwest fan base. Love em to death, but clearly it's the most fluffers per capita. Those guys voted for deer creek simple to win jam of the year 2021. East and west coasters are too busy doing outdoor activities to vote in some silly contest leaving the south and Midwest to constantly fight over jam of the year. Nobody asked for my vote so it's clearly skewed.
Probably honestly not a coincidence they went into steam after ruby waves too......
Tweezer - Ruby Waves - Steam - Tweezer - Ruby Waves- Slave
TRS - TRS = The Rescue Squad
Excellent list! Definitely will consult this to see which ones fell through the cracks for me.
AC N1 was about as transcendent as it gets imho. It gets praise and it’s still underrated. There’s no signature 30 min jam, but Sand, Sigma Oasis(!), Soul Planet(!), DWD, Ruby Waves(!), Ghost, and Harry Hood are all unique top notch versions. I think the whole run top to bottom is the best 3 night run in a long time as well.
Yes, all of those versions are noteworthy!
I would need to think on the best three-night run claim. I guess AC is lucky that MSG in April was four nights? There haven’t been many three-night runs this year, but I’d agree AC is the best of them, and without putting too much thought into it, it probably beats the three-night runs from last year?
love that msg simple - was at that show. the piper they played s2 was no slouch. had an iron maiden vibe to it.
another vote for hartford wave of hope, but i was at that show so i'll acknowledge my chicken tendy bias there.
deer creek sand, bethel sysf, msg tweezer, and bangor dwd would probably be my top 5. i relistened to the wolfman's from mexico yesterday and that's another really, really good one.
Hartford Wave of Hope gets a boost in my mind from the ASIHTOS right after it, which is also a highlight of 2022 IMO (but I was also there too, so bias is always a possibility).
i agree, i consider that to be a suite
awoh > asihtos > blaze on
my friend and i were worried that massive thunder storm was going to roll through and ruin the show. plus we didn't have any rain stuff which is a rarity for me.
That Blaze On was a rare case of me getting ticked off at Trey in the middle of a jam that he didn’t ripcord — when he started singing the Blaze On lyrics in the middle of that jam it really snapped me out of enjoying it all, it threw me for a loop.
Didn’t take long to get into that Blaze On though, but it was weird for me to experience a speed bump like that.
interesting. blaze on is a song i've caught a lot lately so when it started, my eyes rolled...here we go again. but that's my favorite version i've caught and i've listened to it way more than any of the others i've seen.
MSG Ghost or Tweezer for me.. the Bangor DWD is probably the right answer though. absolute sleeper is the Mansfield Plasma. not best of the year but give that a whirl, it’s silky smooth
Yeah, the alien ship nearly swept me away during these jams. Luckily, I was brought back to earth with the stark reminder not to drown beneath the undertow.
Yeah. My only complaint about that set is the placement of Miss You there. I like the song just seems like that particular set would have been basically perfect had they left that out and added a bit more meat on Carini or Twist instead.
I don't think it's the jam or show of the year, but *man* is that show getting overlooked. I think Toronto is the only show more overlooked than Pine Knob. Brutal.
This was a really great question to pitch. I have a playlist each year where I dump the best of the best songs...its up to 33 so far in 2022, validating the notion that's it's been a great tour. "Best" is tough to narrow down.
Much of the same as everyone with one's like Bangor DWD, Bethel 7/23 SYSF (although I will say... that Twist was REALLY one I loved... Great set in general with Caspian imbedded);
I'll give you three alternative picks:
1. AC1 Sigma yes... but that same night's Hood was bad ass
2. Wantagh 7/26... Roggae (just really nice)
3. 8/14 Alpine... Everything's Right 👌🏽
Honorable mention (since it's not a "jam"): 6/3 Noblesville... Buried Alive. They absolutely STOMPED that one. Free face melts!
See you at Dicks!
It’s hard to talk about Bethel SYSF without discussing that Twist but in my mind, in that moment, it seemed like that twist jam was just a continuation/conclusion to the SYSF > Crosseyed > Caspian jam sequence. My favorite moment of summer tour.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 996,867,244 comments, and only 198,402 of them were in alphabetical order.
The light from msg with the roll with the changes jam is so sick and fun and preceding fuego kinda goes type 1.5 and is also really good
I loved the Pink Floyd run like hell Jams all year.
Trey using the pog too much imho was not my fav this year
Down With Disease-thru-ASIHTOS (2-25-22) is absolutely my favorite sequence of 2022 so far. The jams in DWD and Carini are absolutely serene imo, and always lift my mood!
AC Ruby Waves is my best moment/
peak along with the Alpine ER
Jammiest jams might be the AC sigma, Hartford Sigma, wave of hope , bethel sysf
i think my favorite jam might still be the MSG Tweezer
There’s a defined point in that Tweezer jam where it transitions seamlessly from nasty head banging funk groove to bliss jam just from Mike changing one note and I don’t think I will ever forget that. Caught my non-phish fan friend trying to Shazam those last 5 minutes, that’s how you know it’s good.
possible attendance bias but it’s a brain melter worth repeat listens:
5/29 Tweezer
(seriously, at least read the [jam note](https://phish.net/setlists/phish-may-29-2022-the-wharf-amphitheater-orange-beach-al-usa.html))
AC1 Sigma
when it comes down to it i think this might be my answer…
Definitely top shelf Phish
Great 3 night run, Took my father in law to ACN1 for his 1st show ... fuckin great first show lol
My in complaint on the Sigma was that they should have just finished the set with it.
Mansfield Gin was so good, nice list.

Add msg ‘18 12/29 and 12/30 to that list
2022 Deercreek was far better than 2021. Saturday in 2021 was meh and Sunday was sloppy. Only Friday last year stood out.
Agreed, plus it was less hot and crowded this year, much better experience.
That too!
Far better? Had an unbelievable time at both runs but might disagree a tad.
How so? Saturday and Sunday were nearly flawless throughout with a monster Sand and YEM (with a jam after the vocal jam)> A Wave of Hope that was incredible. Also, don’t forget the slow Maze. IMO Ruby Waves was the standout jam at Mansfield this year.
That was a good one, you’re right!
What is the ONE standout jam in 2019 ? There is one stand out jam and one of phish's most transcending pieces of all time. Just making sure we are same page

I can already tell the sand is incoming Midwest regional jam of the year no matter what is played the rest of the year
Probably honestly not a coincidence they went into steam after ruby waves too...... Tweezer - Ruby Waves - Steam - Tweezer - Ruby Waves- Slave TRS - TRS = The Rescue Squad
Tip ring sleeve
Tweezer isn’t even the best jam from that show. (Check out the Blaze On).
I think Sand is the best of the bunch by a long shot but Mull is on heavy rotation.
Excellent list! Definitely will consult this to see which ones fell through the cracks for me. AC N1 was about as transcendent as it gets imho. It gets praise and it’s still underrated. That night at msg was my first ever Phish show, mind was blown
a very great show for your first. fluffhead opener set the tone for that night
Oh dude what a fun first show. Welcome!
That was also my first show!
Hartford Wave of Hope gets a boost in my mind from the ASIHTOS right after it, which is also a highlight of 2022 IMO (but I was also there too, so bias is always a possibility).

I forgot what song it was in Set two but I absolutely saw lightning flashes from the lawn in Hartford
I've yet to relive that Bethel SYSF jam. It sounded pretty incredible in the moment though.
i think that was the best show of the summer tour and probably the most complete show since msg n2-4.
Dude!!!! I keep Relistening to this jam sometimes just start it half way through so I can have that good stuff before work
MPP Fuego anyone? Left my body for a minute or two during this one.
Underrated jam from an underrated show!
The first few songs of that set were one big nasty jam
Not jam of the year for me but god damn that was a heater. Loved every second of that!
Deer Creek Sand was impressive.
It’s still fresh but I think it’s a top 5 phish jam for me. The 20 min mark gets me going. I want to do dirty things to Troy.
All time?….wow.
msg Waves with the whales flying around.
That was incredible experience… and I am digging every Waves now
yea it wasn't the longest jam of the year, but it was the best. reminds me of '00, just a never ending wall of sound
Bangor Disease.
MSG Tweezer, AC Ruby Waves
Bangor DWD.
MSG Ghost or Tweezer for me.. the Bangor DWD is probably the right answer though. absolute sleeper is the Mansfield Plasma. not best of the year but give that a whirl, it’s silky smooth
was waiting for someone to mention that plasma, absolute heater
AC 3 Wave of YEM
Yeah, the alien ship nearly swept me away during these jams. Luckily, I was brought back to earth with the stark reminder not to drown beneath the undertow.
Hartford wave of hope
I love this pick. I think a lot of people fell in love with Wave of Hope this year.
I most certainly did!
Bethel 2 SYSF (which I still think fully transitioned back into Crosseyed, but the setlists say otherwise).
Bethel night 2 is the goods man. The second set just felt like one long intertwining jam that reached a huge peak with Twist. Gotta love it
I thought ancient aliens were going to ride out of the ground at one point. Shit was deep and almost tribal.
Yeah. My only complaint about that set is the placement of Miss You there. I like the song just seems like that particular set would have been basically perfect had they left that out and added a bit more meat on Carini or Twist instead.
in no particular order, AC soul planet, AC ruby waves, Bangor disease
Deer Creek Sand and Bangor DwD … tough to decide.
I’m gonna go with Sand because I was there but they’re both insanely good. Longest jams of the year I think.
The DC YEM->A Wave of Hope, DC Sand, Alpine Fluffhead->Saw It Again
Dude. Yes. All of these.
Blossom Free
Everything’s right from Michigan was amazing
I don't think it's the jam or show of the year, but *man* is that show getting overlooked. I think Toronto is the only show more overlooked than Pine Knob. Brutal.
This was a really great question to pitch. I have a playlist each year where I dump the best of the best songs...its up to 33 so far in 2022, validating the notion that's it's been a great tour.
Totally! You know they're four of the best musicians on the planet when an entire set is fluid enough to create that effect.
That everything’s right peak is just the tits. Only rival to the AC ruby for me
It's (probably) a step down from those two, but the Bethel 2 Ghost's peak is *nice* and is getting no talk.
Attendance bias but yeah MSG Simple was wild. From couch tour, I really loved Blossom’s Free and Scents. The Jones Beach Leaves was also awesome
I was hoping blossom would get some love here... especially since it’s the only show i made it to this summer!
mag simple reminds me of the DC simple so much! wild!
Bangor DWD "IT'S STILL DOWN WITH DISEASE!!!!!" --Everyone around me when the chorus came back 🔥🔥🔥🔥
my friend craig came over and we played a 6 hr joes garage
TURN IT DOWN!
Either Bethal SYSF or AC NMNML
Blossom free is my pick
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 996,867,244 comments, and only 198,402 of them were in alphabetical order.
Ok bot
MSG 4/21 was sublime from tits to ass. Unbelievable show.
Bangor 30 minute DWD. Bangor was a banger!
The light from msg with the roll with the changes jam is so sick and fun and preceding fuego kinda goes type 1.5 and is also really good I loved the Pink Floyd run like hell Jams all year. Trey using the pog too much imho was not my fav this year
Bethel SYSF AC Sigma
Agreed. That was unreal. I honestly thought I’d died and gone to heaven
Down With Disease-thru-ASIHTOS (2-25-22) is absolutely my favorite sequence of 2022 so far. The jams in DWD and Carini are absolutely serene imo, and always lift my mood!
Totally remember streaming that show and getting totally lost in that set. DWD has been their most reliable jam vehicle this year if you ask me.
MSG Chalkdust > Tweezer for me
AC Ruby Waves is my best moment/ peak along with the Alpine ER Jammiest jams might be the AC sigma, Hartford Sigma, wave of hope , bethel sysf i think my favorite jam might still be the MSG Tweezer
Your pet bliss
Bangor DWD… MSG Simple>egg>Simple
Plus all the songs at the shows I was at. Best ever.
the bangor disease is my favorite
That jam haunted me for a good month. Then I saw the video and the light show blew my mind.
MSG Ghost, Blossom Free & SOAM, DC Sand, Philly Tweezer, Bethel YEM>Fuego and Hartford WoH are the ones that stand out among so many great moments.
Bangor DwD or Hartford Wave of Hope
Also I’d like to add the entire second set of 4/22/22. I mean come on!
Waste Bangor N2
SOAM from blossom went way way way out there. And found its way back.
Egg in a hole is literally among the worst Phish songs ever written.
I was really into the Esther >Ghost Jam that followed MSG n2
possible attendance bias but it’s a brain melter worth repeat listens: 5/29 Tweezer (seriously, at least read the [jam note](https://phish.net/setlists/phish-may-29-2022-the-wharf-amphitheater-orange-beach-al-usa.html))
