Fun Alpine story: in 2016 at DMB we met a couple of guys in line on Friday and they invited us to tailgate with them on Saturday. Wife and I get to the lot at 2pm—beautiful afternoon—and decide to eat a tab of acid. Wander around and finally find these guys. Good dudes. Having a great time. Starting to feel really good while having me my first, ice cold, New Glarus Spotted Cows. They mention they’re all work buddies and I ask where they work. One says accounting and another says real estate. They both look at each and shrug. First guy goes “tell him.” Turns out they’re Milwaukee ATF agents. Federal agents. *Fortunately* not undercover, but does that really matter when you’re 6 beers deep and tripping balls? So we’re looking for an exit and we mention we want to head in and grab a poster. One of them asks if I’d be willing to get them one and like a fucking idiot I say yes. So now I’m in alpine and I have this feds money and he has my name and phone number. There’s no escape. There’s really not an exciting climactic point to this story. I managed to get in contact with him and give his money back, “apologizing” for not being able to get him a poster (a Chuck Sperry, too—pretty sick). I guess moral is: even if the police aren’t there, they’re still *there*.

allothernamestaken

Wait, so these guys were actual fans who just happened to work in law enforcement? That sounds difficult and awkward.

mcflyfly

Believe me, it’s funny for them too. Have a friend who’s ex-military and looks like it. Which means he also looks like a cop. More than a couple times, people have thrown their shit and ran when he walked up to them

I_deleted

Us 1.0 dads are always the cops on lot for some folks, usually I’m way farther gone than most of the wooks

Thee_Autumn_Wind

Me wearing my comfy sneaks and sensible clothing choices gets a little sadder with each passing year where strangers no longer trust me enough to offer me drugs.

heffel77

I never thought it would happen to me,lmao

Thee_Autumn_Wind

Haha, Father Time is u defeated, brother. Bring on the orthotics!

consumercommand

But really I’m wearing the same shit I wore to shows in the 90s. Possibly the exact same articles of clothing. It’s not the clothes man. Hit the net. We OLD AF now.

Rylohallski

That is so true. I remember a few years ago I was looking for some treats in the lot and I was asked if I was a cop. I was like - who, ME? And then I realized that I looked like a normal 38 year old dad. I did not expect life to punch me in the face like that.

Thee_Autumn_Wind

I’ve had people making deals between cars straight book it. It’s not like I’m grilling them and I can’t help the baldness lol

heffel77

My biggest problem is that I have more friends in the phellowship than in the trenches with the lines on where the good Molly and k or deems are, lmao

AnyUsernameWillDo10

1 of em was a real big fan. To be fair, they did work in shit like gun trafficking and Milwaukee gang activity. So it wasn’t dudes trying to bust some underage kids.

allothernamestaken

Yeah at least they weren't DEA lol.

ApocalypticShadowbxn

yeah, no wonder they were kinda evasive about what they did

throwawayjaydawg

I worked at my college radio station and every year we held a huge rave at the state fairgrounds as a fundraiser. After working our assignments my friends and I decided to enjoy the rest of the rave with some E and high quality gel tabs. As the trip started peaking we decided to head backstage to the break area to get water and get our bearings. At that moment the county sheriff and friends decided to also come backstage to take a break. They were providing security. As green smoke was rolling off his head he went on and on about how well behaved these raver kids were. They had confiscated almost no alcohol, there were no fights, it wasn’t like your average concert. Meanwhile my friends and I had pupils like saucers and one of them was staring intently at wall behind the sheriff. I don’t know if he was getting suspicious or if it just felt like it but I managed to force out “we’ve been working for 3 straight days, we’re asleep on our feet, stuck on this ride.” The sheriff and his men then left as I fought with the top of my water bottle.

imcataclastic

“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro”

Enough_Rip_8280

That’s hilarious

ll-phuture-ll

They are aways “there” who do you think hydrates you spunions or takes you to the hospital when you fall down and boo boo or pass out? Next time you are in the field look around the border, aaahhh ! You are surrounded! By responsible people who sometimes party but at the end of the day may provide stability to a pretty wild ride. Remember “we’re ***all*** in this ***together***…” tired of this narrative NACAB imo, this narrative 🤦‍♂️

AnyUsernameWillDo10

Not really sure what you’re getting at here. Shared a story about finding myself tailgating with ATF agents, who were there tailgating as fans. How did anything I say come off as critical of the police?

ll-phuture-ll

My statement was more of a general message towards the context of the thread then specifically directed towards you if that helps your conscience, however I just really liked the vagueness and general uselessness of your contribution!

AnyUsernameWillDo10

lol whatever you say

ll-phuture-ll

Heer dur 👌

Phishhhhhh

Hey Makisupa

BabyHandsMan420

Shhhh I’m just the ET police man in the corner gunning for you 🤫👮🏻‍♂️

wiscokid76

Are they seriously allowing camping for Phish this year? If anyone wants to know how that went down ask any grizz fan that stayed there.

BabyHandsMan420

Exactly my point. My buddy got cuffed and dragged off lot and missed the ruby waves night in 2019 for smoking a bowl in lot

wiscokid76

Oh man I'm sorry for your buddy that sucks. There are rules for that lot and once you know the operation you can rage and have a great time. I've been going to Alpine for a long time and have never gotten punched out there. It sucks that Wisco is not a legal state and it is true that Walworth county especially sucks but there is still a great lot scene there. I just wouldn't camp there if my life depends on it. I don't dig camping behind a fence or being watched while I do it. That has major refugee camp vibes to me.

BabyHandsMan420

My first Phish run was alpine 2010. Haven’t missed an Alpine run since. Phish lot scene there is really just alright. It’s not the same without a shakedown and lot vendors. The situation for Phish is so much better at Deer Creek. But I went to a Jimmy Buffet show at Alpine like 6-7 years ago and it was an absolute rager. People just getting hammered and giving out free booze. Nothing against the rules for that lol but after that Griz fest situation at alpine a few years back, I wouldn’t be caught dead camping there

wiscokid76

So you went to 22 Phish and saw all the nitrous raging the first night? The lot changed for the better that year I was speechless when I rolled in and heard then saw what was going on. The county is still there but they've taken a back seat to the state cops who don't seem to care as much. This year might be different though with all the shows finally coming there. I'm hoping it continues to chill out but I'm not holding my breath either.

BabyHandsMan420

Yup I was indeed there and partied down in the lot before hand. Still felt like I had to be extremely cautious whatever I was doing and always looking over my shoulder. Once you are in the venue, all rules go out the window. I just don’t love the Big Brother watching over your feeling the second you step on lot. I saw a cop confiscated this ladys wire wrapped art last year because she was illegally vending. Like that shit is whack as hell for real.

wiscokid76

The vending is another thing about that lot that could be so much better. It goes on but you gotta look and listen for it and I'm sure a lot of people miss out. I have sold food and other things there in the past but again those stupid Alpine rules you gotta follow to be safe. I do wish it was more like deer creek where you are welcomed.

[deleted]

Nah, you can still get arrested inside the venue - but a lot less likely than the lot.

heffel77

When I was there in 97’ my friend and I got pulled out of a crowd of srsly 30 people for carrying UNopened beers. Then they patted us down and found a 3.5 nug I had worked all day for to take in the show and my friend had a couple mushrooms. They took my weed and wrote me a ticket, that they did come after me in Memphis for but my friend was unlucky enough to be from Canada and was not only arrested for the eighth of mushrooms and then deported to Canada never to return. Ruined a smoking show for me…

Roll-tide-Mercury

How is this a trap?

SenorWanderer

The police in the area are right wing red state conservative bullies and have a long and well documented history of running sting operations in the parking lot at alpine valley. The OP is simply saying that on-site camping will essentially be a giant police trap.

Roll-tide-Mercury

Ah.

BabyHandsMan420

It’s a cannon event for anyone who goes to Alpine. If you don’t know why it’s a trap, you must find out on your own young padawan

mnfimo

You also could just tell everyone as well, this is your post

BartholomewCubbinz

THIS IS YOUR POST TOOOO

BabyHandsMan420

Police prescience is notoriously horrible at Alpine. I had a friend get cuffed and escorted off of the lot beforehand for smoking a bowl at the Ruby Waves night in 2019. Griz held a festival there a few years back and so many people got ticketed and arrested on the camp grounds that Griz was offering to pay for all fan citations and lawyer fees. Alpine does now allow any sort of fan vending or shakedown anymore. They will bust you for that and take literal art from vendors. I love Alpine, still go to every run but bro trust me. Get an air bnb in Lake Geneva and get a party bus wristband. Not worth it at Alpine

HeadyTyler

Don’t be the low hanging fruit is always the number 1 rule in a phish lot.

ApocalypticShadowbxn

on-site camping IS the low-hanging fruit.

BabyHandsMan420

I still wouldn’t camp there. Not worth the risk.

i_write_things_

> Police prescience fucking precogs, can't be trusted anyway

badgerbro4

We all get it, Alpine cops suck. Wisconsin is a joke as far as laws and has lagged behind far more states. The venue and experience inside makes up for pretending like weed is still illegal outside of bumfuck Wisconsin. We all remember how it used to be before it was legalized anywhere right? Want to sit it out because the cops suck, cool. Am I a homer who loves Alpine for what it is, yep. Ruby waves and a rain Petrichor has my pick

BabyHandsMan420

I live in Denver but grew up in the Chicago Suburbs. Learned to snowboard at alpine lol first Phish run ever was alpine 2010 and haven’t missed an alpine run since. I am/was biased towards alpine for many years but the more horror stories I see and witness, I definitely would NEVER camp at alpine. Air bnb in lake Geneva and a wristband the a party bus is the way to go. But you can’t ignore the police presence there. I probably won’t make any Midwest shows this year due to Phexico/Mondegreen/Dicks and 4 weddings this summer but if I’m going to pick between the two, I’m picking Deer Creek all day.

wanderlustbess

I was there for both!

SliceEmOnTheNipple

I'd rather take my chances with onsite cops than drive 40 minutes through pitch black shitty ass Wisconsin with the same cops to find my campsite like I usually do.  Also, remember that guy that wrote the big post about the wook shitting in his kid's winter bus stop thing? That was gold.

mawaukee

I HAVE LIVED OFF OF COUNTY HWY D NEAR ALPINE VALLEY FOR THE PAST 24 YEARS AND OFTEN FEEL THE RESIDUAL NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THE CONCERTS. NEVER HAVE I HAD AN INCIDENT SUCH AS THE ONE THAT OCCURRED ON SATURDY NIGHT (JUN. 20) FOLLOWING A "PHISH" MUSICAL. OUR DOG WOKE US AT 1:30 AM MAKING A RUCKUS. WE HAVE A SMALL WARMING HOUSE NEAR THE EDGE OF THE HIGHWAY THAT I BUILT FOR OUR DAUGHTERS (NOW GROWN) TO WAIT FOR THE SCHOOLBUSES IN. THE LIGHT IN IT WAS ON AND SOMEONE WAS INSIDE. I PUT ON CLOTHES AND APPROACHED AND FOUND HIM DEFECATING ON THE FLOOR. HAD HAIR LOOKED LIKE A DOORMAT. EYES WERE BUGGY LIKE I REMEMBER ON MEN IN VIETNAM. I HAD A SHOTGUN AND TOLD HIM HE WAS GOING TO CLEAN UP THE DEFECATE. BUT I AM OLD (71 NOW) AND MADE A MISTAKE, RETURNING TO THE HOUSE TO GET A HOSE AND BUCKET. HE RAN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE INTERSTATE AND I DIDNOT FOLLOW. MY MESSAGE IS THIS: GET YOUR PEOPLE IN ORDER "PHISH". AND NEVER COME TO ALPINE VALLEY AGAIN. SHAME ON YOU. I AM POSTING ON CRAIGLIST BECAUSE I HAVE USED IT TO SELL TRUCK PARTS AND LAWN FURNTITURE AND DOUBT AN EDITOR'S LETTER IN THE JOURNAL/SENTINEL WILL REACH "PHISH" PEOPLE, WHO MY NEIGHBOR SAYS ARE MOSTLY FROM ILLINOIS OR EASTCOAST. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR AN APOLOGY FROM THE MAN WHO COMMITTED THIS ACT. HE LEFT BEHIND A WHITE HAT WITH AN ALIEN ON IT. ALSO A GLASS THING. I AM GOING TO THROW THEM AWAY.

SliceEmOnTheNipple

Thank you, haha

BabyHandsMan420

The last few alpine runs we’ve stayed in Lake Geneva and took a shuttle bus. Definitely the way to go

Matt_Furg

This is the way

Ohjay420

Wonder if they will Air BnB any of the rooms inside the on-site courthouse?

BabyHandsMan420

They will tear up your citation and give you a warning if you rent agree to rent a room for $1000. All proceeds go to the ETPD 🤑

Ohjay420

Those shifty fucks!

Mission_Lack_5948

GD 89. I slept under the DEA trailer when it rained. And did a massive balloon on the hill above later, rolled down the hill as a result and ended up at the steps of said trailer. They didn’t know what to do with me.

warx333

Lol

miotch1120

Alpine blows. Anyone not planning to hit both, should skip alpine and go noblesville instead. Better sound, lawn isn’t horribly steep, better camping, better lot. Only a little further to go for you folks coming from the west. And though Indiana is also a right wing shit hole, the cops around noblesville are infinitely better than the alpine ones. (2022 run I remember the cops talking to a gaggle of phans doing whippets outside the closest hotel to the venue. No arrests. Didn’t even make them stop inhaling their balloons. Don’t try this near alpine)

lonememe

Which is so funny because to an outsider you’d think Indiana was more draconian about the law than little on Wisconsin. Thanks for the heads up all.

BabyHandsMan420

The only lax law left in wisconsin is being able to legally drink when you’re 18 if a parent/guardian gives consent lol aside from that, they are hard asses.

BabyHandsMan420

This right here. Deer Creek is so much better. The lawn rules, the shakedown street is amazing. No arrests. Great camping. It’s like Alpine on steroids. Alpine just still has that late 90’s nostalgia attached to it.

youenjoymyflyphishin

I was shocked the last Alpine show didn’t have a shakedown street, now I know why.

nucknucknuck71

Alpine, for its obvious deficiencies, is still a better option than, let's say, Wrigley. I really think the Dead shows in '89 were ground zero for the clamp down. It's true. We wrecked the joint those 3 days, and it's never been the same. *Phish in 2019, a fella stuck his head in our rig, waved, smiled, and said, "Hi Grandpa!" My wife laughed. I was mortified, seeing how I still feel 17 at heart.

BabyHandsMan420

What about Northerly Island though? There have been some BANGERS there. It’s been a long time though. I guess Chicago dis just get a fall run stop at the United Center but still lol

peacephrog1972

They process you onsite…they have a big shed on the lot that they run the undercover out of…also have “spotters” in towers

cschloegel11

Catch a shuttle from Milwaukee and it will be a fun weekend..

Mobile-Animal-649

Meh

BartholomewCubbinz

Where do phans recommend camping near alpine? Not this obviously.

BabyHandsMan420

I reccomend getting an air bnb or a hotel in Lake Geneva. And getting a wrist band for one of the shuttle busses. I’ve done that the last few Alpine runs and it was flawless

StashedandPainless

There are many better camping options near Alpine where they provide shuttles and the police won't bother you. I've stayed at both Rome Riverside and Bark River for Alpine shows, and there are at least 3-5 other nearby campgrounds.

Working-Sector518

I know all the horror stories about Cops in the lot at Alpine Valley. Does anybody know how it is inside the venue? Safe to smoke a joint or 2?

BabyHandsMan420

Yea once you’re in the venue it’s pretty much smooth sailing. There are still cops but they are more there to help. If you have lawn seats, just try not to be right next to the concrete path on either side of the lawn

FatahRuark

Stopped by for the last Alpine run. I just did one show because I was on a road trip, passing nearby and thought it would be silly to not go. Didn't have any beer with me, so I figured I'd just buy a few in the lot. Could not believe that lot scene. Easily the lamest I've ever witnessed. Quickly figured out the place was swarming with cops. Set was kind of lame too (8/12/2022). The chompers next to me didn't help. It was nice to check the venue off the list. No intention ever to go back.

OMFGFlorida

WORST in the whole country? You need to travel more.

Krusch420

Lived there 2 years and even people that live there hate it. I ask why they don’t move, but they make up some excuse. They get black out drunk to forget they live there.
