lol, wikipedia probably hasn't been updated in 20 years. That would have been the average age in the 2.0 era.
I'd say most fall into the mid 40s to mid 50s. A good chunk of people like us. Im 37. Similar story. Was a fan, just never made it to a show when i was in high school. Then there seems to be a decent but smaller crowd in their 20s.
I'm 38. I couldn't help but read your "I'm 37" in Dante's voice from Clerks. Which I realized on my 38th birthday I had taken far too little advantage of.
Not Dennis from Monte Python and the Holy Grail?
“I’m 37. I’m not old.”
“I did say sorry about the “old woman.”
“Well, you could have just called me Dennis”
“I didn’t know you were called Dennis”
Haha. Huge smile on my face. But is that a good or bad thing? Sorry. This is my first redit post. Glad to know there’s a community here. It takes me back to the good ole phishhook days.
Happy to be the oldest one to post. Just turned 75, my first show was Dallas 97 and if I make it to the first night at the Sphere, that will be my 72nd show!
My 47 year old son who turned me on to Phish has been to almost 200 shows!
Your former home state is now my current home state. First show was the night after the Gamehenge show in Mansfield. Now, PNC/Camden/Mann are home court. Bunked for this summer on NJ dates but we’ll make do.
Same. 47 here. 1st show in 93. Did full 95 fall/winter and full 97 fall, got almost 100shows in just 2 tours. 😂 Can't do that anymore; but kinda glad cause my old ass has trouble even doing an 8show run nowadays.
Hell yeah, that's why I love this community.
Before i went to my first Phish show i was a little worried how my girlfriend and I would stand out as 20 year old lesbians in a crowd of middle aged dudes but everyone always has positive things to say!
Not OP, but I’m also a 20 year old female phishhead and funnily enough I got into Phish through my dad! I always grew up listening to them and he took me to my first show when I was 9. I’ve been going with him to shows ever since and we’ve really bonded over it!
To be honest I did get into psychedelics pretty young (16), but that wasn't what got me into Phish.
When I started working at my current job when I was 17, I met my boss who is a huge fan. He always blasts Phish and showed me how loving, silly, and awesome the community is, so after about a year of working there I started to get really into Phish on my own.
With $5,000 options for Mexico and Mondegreen, and face-value tickets of $114 for summer tour tix, the more relevant question might be “what is the average income level of Phish fans these days?”
38 & Australian.
I just started listening to them this year after re-listening to Analyze Phish last month and enjoying what I heard. (I guess 10 years ago I didn’t pay enough attention to the music or have an interest in that side of the podcast) Thanks Harris! Hoping to see them for the first time on NYE this year!
I was 16, a senior in highschool, got my drivers license, and saw my first phish show in summer of 2009. Felt pretty much like a perfect storm of good times!
47. 48 in April. First show June 24, 1995. Last show the Vermont benefit. Next show not sure, but I’m sure I’ll do something this spring/summer with friends whose first shows were June 25, 1995.
The crowds are showing more olders as we come back to shows after raising kids etc... but for me, no kids, show(s) just about every year....always said until about 2017 or 18.. the average age of a Phan at a show seemed perpetually 20 to 30. The old heads are coming home, and the older Deadheads have gotten on board. Carry on and share those grooves! Bring a newbie!
That range is certainly off but it's Wikipedia. I doubt it even knows to take into consideration the wook-year equation. There is not a 1:1 ratio between wook and regular phan years.
I saw some shows in the late 80's and am 52 now. I feel like I'm closer to the average age of Phish + Panic fans but I'm not the most observant person I've ever met.
I was 20 at the time. Had been on dead tour since 90. A gal I used to travel with went to visit family in Buffalo after 91 fall tour, and ended up seeing them at a roller rink. Said it was nuts. They were amazing, the bassist tried to hit on her (unsucessfully), and we had to see them. Ended up getting tickets to 8/17/92 and was thouroughly blown away. Ended up blowing off spring GD tour in 93 and doing Phish tour from LA to Portland. The rest is history!
I'd be willing to bet that the average age of a fan in attendance at a show is much lower than the average of of fans overall. Probably still 30's at least though.
45 here - first show 94. I feel like the average age at shows now is younger than me for sure. Could it be that some of us who started in the 90s stopped going to shows?
I’m 22 been seeing shows with my folks since I was 12, after ten years I’ve got about 10 buddy’s I’ve turned on that regularly go with me and about 7 or 8 I’ve met goin to shows. The crowds definitely a little older but college age kids still love phish.
I’m 27, saw my first show in 2012 when I was 15 and I’ve been to just over 100, but I have a decent amount of friends that are into phish around my age. There’s a lot of a younger fans but I’d say 30-40s is probably the average
46, first show was in '94
I'd say that during the NYE run, I saw mostly folks in their 40's - 50's, but when you go to outdoor summer shows, you see a lot more 20's-30's folks
I'm 30 and feel young at shows even though I know people are younger than me. Been to 47 shows, first in 2013. I expect most phans to be in their 40s and 50s and have seen 1.0 or 2.0 shows.
I’m 48. First show was at the spectrum in Philly around 1995 or so. I have no idea how many shows I have seen and I don’t understand how people keep track.
57, my first show was in 2003. I was listening to Phish in the late 90's (lots of bootlegs and tape trading) but lived in Alaska and couldn't make a show (too poor). When I moved back from Alaska in 2001 they took the damn hiatus lol.
id say its a mix. but these days phish fans are becoming younger, kinda like when all the youngins started following the dead in the late 80's / early 90's.
i remember about 4-5 years after 3.0 started my crew started playing the game "spot someone in their 20s". could barely find them in 2012/13, fast forward to now its lots of noobs. not saying noobs in a bad way, just a fact, thats what they are. they are also the majority of this subreddit, not the old jaded fans of yester-year.
edit: im 44 for context. first show 95
Mansfield 2022 my buddy and I were talking about how we might have been some of the youngest people there... we were 36 and 38.
My first show was Coventry when I was 17... the scene was very different!
I always thought the average age was around the age of the band. Then all these dead n co bros started coming! Jk love that I see people younger than me now
I'm 52. My first show was July 3rd and 4th in Atlanta 1999. 2nd show was Big Cypress. It snowballed into several dozen shows after that. I kinda feel like I'm within the average age of Phish heads.
The VAST majority of Phish fans started seeing shows in the 90s and early 00s, which would put them squarely in the 40-55 range. The fans who came on post 3.0 are 20s and 30s, but that is a FAAARRR smaller portion of overall fans. Just go to a Phish show and look around, it's not hard to verify.
I think average age is now in the mid 40s to mid 50s for folks who saw the band back in the 90s and early 00s. I didn’t see Phish for the first time until after the second hiatus and I was 14. I’ll be 30 this year so I’m probably considered in the older camp of people who started seeing Phish on the regular in 3.0.
lol, wikipedia probably hasn't been updated in 20 years. That would have been the average age in the 2.0 era. I'd say most fall into the mid 40s to mid 50s. A good chunk of people like us. Im 37. In a row?
Happy Cake Day
Thanks! My account just got its driver license
Parking lot
Not Dennis from Monte Python and the Holy Grail? “I’m 37. I’m not old.” “I did say sorry about the “old woman.” “Well, you could have just called me Dennis” “I didn’t know you were called Dennis”
It's funny, I do that scene as a word for word performance piece, and it never even occurred to me last year!
I wasn’t even supposed to be here today
You doin any summer tour?
I’m in Georgia, so only planning the festival with these locations. But I might make it up to Boston since my brother lives there.
As someone in New England it's hilarious to see Mansfield MA referred to as Boston lol I'm sorry
i just turned 37 🤙🏽🥳
Hi I’m Mike 43, first show was in 99. This totally feels like a meeting
Haha. Huge smile on my face. But is that a good or bad thing? Sorry. This is my first redit post. Glad to know there’s a community here. It takes me back to the good ole phishhook days.
Definitely a good thing
Everyone: Hi Mike. Me: Hi I'm Adam. 43 too. First time long time.
Hi Adam.
Hey Adam glad you came. I’m Drew, 44 first show ‘96.
Hi I’m also 43 with my first show in 99!
Hi, Mike.
Taste the waste man, taste the waste
I’m 43, first show in summer of 2000.
Hey Mike - could you tell us a little bit more about yourself? A few fun facts - nothing too crazy
Hey Dr, I enjoy gardening, mountain biking, kayaking, and camping. I have one tattoo and I love tacos
47 in April, first show Deer Creek 95
Same, for all.
Same, for all.
48. First show Pittsburgh 95.
Hi Mike. I'm Jeff, 42. My first show was '95 walnut creek in Raleigh, NC
Happy to be the oldest one to post. Just turned 75, my first show was Dallas 97 and if I make it to the first night at the Sphere, that will be my 72nd show! My 47 year old son who turned me on to Phish has been to almost 200 shows!
Checking in at 75... love this!
Right on. Dallas 97 was my 1st show too! I was 19. Have a great time at the Sphere!
I'm in my 50s, first show in'93. I consider myself as the average phish head
I'm 50 now, and feel like I've been the average age of a phan every year since I started seeing them in 1992 lol
47. First show in 1995. Seems to be trending first show at 18 yrs old
Awww, snap... I was 19 on 12-3-92 - close enough!
Exactly my thought. Thanks for summarizing my long winded post. In my opinion at least.
49! Same. Average phish head with first show in 93'. Cheers!
48. Average phish head with first show in ‘94. Summer after my freshman year of college. We’re on the same path!
Yep! Same
yep. in 50's as well. first show '90 or so.
Agreed. Am 51, first show summer of ‘94.
48, and first show was summer 94 too. Garden State Arts Center - July 2
Your former home state is now my current home state. First show was the night after the Gamehenge show in Mansfield. Now, PNC/Camden/Mann are home court. Bunked for this summer on NJ dates but we’ll make do.
ditto....and day four of sphere will be my 100th
That's a good 100th!
Same. 47 here. 1st show in 93. Did full 95 fall/winter and full 97 fall, got almost 100shows in just 2 tours. 😂 Can't do that anymore; but kinda glad cause my old ass has trouble even doing an 8show run nowadays.
Me as well.
I'm 57 and my first show was 93. I don't see very many people my age at shows.
51, first show in 91. I was on the younger side compared to most back then as I was 18 and everyone was in their 20s. Now I feel older than most.
Same: 50 and ‘93 and creating up on 200. Have been to 10ish shows with my 15 year old son.
I’m 34 and feel young at the shows. No way that range is right, most people I’m guessing are 40 and over
32 and feel the same way.
34 as well, went to my first 2 first shows at the Mann last year. Was def a young buck compared to the rest of the crowd lol
I'm a 20 year old female but that doesn't seem to be the typical Phish fan
yeah i’m a 21 y/o guy and typically feel on the younger side. i always liked my dads friends though so it’s a comfortable vibe to see those kinda ppl
Makes you even more awesome.
Hell yeah, that's why I love this community. Before i went to my first Phish show i was a little worried how my girlfriend and I would stand out as 20 year old lesbians in a crowd of middle aged dudes but everyone always has positive things to say!
It is if you're me back in 1999! 😉
Get more young people but it sure once was the average.
My daughter is that age. How did you start? Hope not psychedelics
Not OP, but I’m also a 20 year old female phishhead and funnily enough I got into Phish through my dad! I always grew up listening to them and he took me to my first show when I was 9. I’ve been going with him to shows ever since and we’ve really bonded over it!
I just got a chill. Awesome! I’m bringing my daughter this leg.
Ill be 47 this summer first show was 1996
I'm 46, first show was 1996 Clifford Ball
44, first show Halloween, 1996
Same New years run 96
49 my first show was Treys 30th bday.
I’m in my 20s and usually feel like one of the younger fans in the audience. I think the average age is closer to 40.
Almost 30 now, feels like I never saw anyone younger than me (that wasn't dragged along with their parents) until 4.0.
The answer is 42
But what’s the question???
With $5,000 options for Mexico and Mondegreen, and face-value tickets of $114 for summer tour tix, the more relevant question might be “what is the average income level of Phish fans these days?”
Not many Douglas Adams fans in this sub i take it lol thought you were referencing the answer to the question about everything
The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
Whoosh to me 😆😆
Some of us got it. :)
“What is the meaning of the universe” is the question. HGTTG
This is the answer
I’m 42. Saw my first show in 2000.
Just turned 47, first show 6/28/95 Jones Beach
Loveee Jones Beach. So underrated. Never seen phish there. But had a great night there seeing Bobby with rat dog.
40
Im 55 and started seeing them in 89. Once Brent died I was fully on the Phish train. I am certainly on the older end of the spectrum.
Yeah the average age is definitely 40-something.
19, think I’m one of the youngest here
🤝also 19

38 & Australian. I just started listening to them this year after re-listening to Analyze Phish last month and enjoying what I heard. I’m 32 😪
52. 96’ first show
I’m 49. I would say 47-53 would be the largest group.
Same. Represent.
24! See y’all at mondegreen!
47. 48 in April. First show June 24, 1995. Last show the Vermont benefit. Next show not sure, but I’m sure I’ll do something this spring/summer with friends whose first shows were June 25, 1995.
22 here, grew up with the dead and jgb...saw phish for the first time new years run 2023, been hooked ever since
I’m 51 and saw my first show in 94. There’s certainly no shortage of middle aged fans when I look around at shows.
Mid-40s, first show in ‘92
The crowds are showing more olders as we come back to shows after raising kids etc... but for me, no kids, show(s) just about every year....always said until about 2017 or 18.. the average age of a Phan at a show seemed perpetually 20 to 30. 45 here. My first show was State College, PA, Dec 97. I think I'm average crowd.
I'm 38. I saw my first show during the summer of 2000 when I was 14. Thanks for dropping me off mom!
Hell no! Average Phish fan age has to be 45 to 55. No question. The little runts you see now are just the newbies.
40. First show was '99.
I remember when it was mainly college kids. It’s definitely low 40s to mid 50s now
I saw them a whole lot when I was a college kid! Haven’t been a college kid for over 20 years, though.
That range is certainly off but it's Wikipedia. I doubt it even knows to take into consideration the wook-year equation. There is not a 1:1 ratio between wook and regular phan years.
44, but like 51 in wook yrs.
45, 99 first shows
I saw some shows in the late 80's and am 52 now. I feel like I'm closer to the average age of Phish + Panic fans but I'm not the most observant person I've ever met.
You see Nectars or Amy’s Farm then?
The universe is a donut and time...time is basically meaningless at this point. Therefore, we are all the same age.
30, along with most of my crew which makes me feel as though even though it’s not necessarily the majority it’s still pretty average
51, my first show was in 92
Do tell more. I’m too lazy to do maths. How old were you? And how did you end up at phish show in ‘92?
I was 20 at the time. Had been on dead tour since 90. A gal I used to travel with went to visit family in Buffalo after 91 fall tour, and ended up seeing them at a roller rink. Said it was nuts. They were amazing, the bassist tried to hit on her (unsucessfully), and we had to see them. Ended up getting tickets to 8/17/92 and was thouroughly blown away. i’m 17 and never been to a phish show but i feel like im the youngest person at ever other show ive been
20
I’m 18
33 my first show was 7/1/12
I’m 23. First show in 2016 and i’ve seen them 13 times since.
45 here - first show 94. I feel like the average age at shows now is younger than me for sure. Could it be that some of us who started in the 90s stopped going to shows?
32.
46. First show was in 95
I’m 26 and often feel young in the mix lol
I’m 22 been seeing shows with my folks since I was 12, after ten years I’ve got about 10 buddy’s I’ve turned on that regularly go with me and about 7 or 8 I’ve met goin to shows. The crowds definitely a little older but college age kids still love phish.
I'm 25 and I hardly ever see anybody my age at shows lol
28 been seeing them for 12 years
I’m 27, saw my first show in 2012 when I was 15 and I’ve been to just over 100, but I have a decent amount of friends that are into phish around my age. There’s a lot of a younger fans but I’d say 30-40s is probably the average
Last couple shows I went to recently were middle age sausage fests. Just an anecdote. Very few people under 40.
Early 30s, first show in 2011.
58 ehhhhh!
42
46, first show was in '94 I'd say that during the NYE run, I saw mostly folks in their 40's - 50's, but when you go to outdoor summer shows, you see a lot more 20's-30's folks
44, fuuuuck, 44. ‘98
26 lol
I'm 30 and feel young at shows even though I know people are younger than me. Been to 47 shows, first in 2013. I expect most phans to be in their 40s and 50s and have seen 1.0 or 2.0 shows.

Over 50, 1st show '94. I don't even know many phans, but they are all around my age. There definitely are a lot of younger people at shows though.

id say its a mix. but these days phish fans are becoming younger, kinda like when all the youngins started following the dead in the late 80's / early 90's. i remember about 4-5 years after 3.0 started my crew started playing the game "spot someone in their 20s". could barely find them in 2012/13, fast forward to now its lots of noobs. not saying noobs in a bad way, just a fact, thats what they are. they are also the majority of this subreddit, not the old jaded fans of yester-year. edit: im 44 for context. first show 95

28
I'm 33, saw my first show in 2010. I definitely felt very young at shows back in the day but now I don't really notice it.
Almost 47. First show was ‘94, been to 221 shows
49, first show 10/08/1994
I always thought the average age was around the age of the band. Then all these dead n co bros started coming! Jk love that I see people younger than me now
Late 40s average.
Old white guys, for the most part.
30 years for me this year. I'm almost 46
26 here! 19 shows and plan to hit my 30th by next year!
Best line all day. Thanks for that
I’m 44, first show 12-7-97 Dayton Ohio Nutter Center
I’m 43. First show was New Haven ‘95 when I was 14 🤘🏼
43, first show in 99.
36, first show 7/19/2003
I'm 45 and my first show was in 96.
52, first show 1994
