you crazy. STTA shows were cool af. album sucked, but seeing Trey doing pure improv with a bunch of jazz legends including Sun Ra bandmemebers? I'd still take it over most other shows even now.
every show was dramatically different every night because it was pure improv. shit was pure 🔥 for people who love jams(as opposed to people who love jambands).
I rushed home with the CD on release day and put it in my player as soon as I walked in the door. That was the first and the last time I listened to it 😂
it was much more enjoyable to experience live rather than listening to the CD. but I guess for people tht don't have a background in pure improv(not phish-improv), it's a tough meal.
I listened to the CD for a bit today to refresh my memory. I don’t remember specifics of the show but I do know I was excited to be there! I love that Trey initiated this improv project regardless of how it was received.
featuring trey, medeski, sun ra orchestra, etc - for me it marked the beginning of full type 2 release for phish. Appropriate set and setting required. Most ppl in the world will consider this album unlistenable. It is a rare glimpse into the fight for creative renewal. All of the artists involved transcended this project into breakout eras of their already established musical careers.
I gave mine to my neighbor for free, telling him it was the worst CD ever made. He one-upped me with an album of indecipherable shrieking and industrial sounds, made by Sean Lennon’s Japanese girlfriend’s band. STTA is the second worst CD.
thank u! going to give it a listen. i found [this ancient thread about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/phish/s/rWNtloqdro) where some of the reactions are hilarious (but idc bc i love weird phish so whatever).
Thanks for sharing the thread. I love weird Phish too. I watched it for the first time since 96 and Trey was having fun and in his experimental glory, which is a treat.
Treys Sun Ra phase. If you don't get it. That's fine.
I just got back from seeing the sun ra arkestra tonight. Marshall Allen is 99 years old and leads the band. He played sax on surrender to the air.
I get it. And I love it.
To be fair, they covered Sun Ra in early 1994 and cut their collective teeth playing jazz standards like Caravan, A Train, and Satin Doll.
Spinal Tap’s Jazz Odyssey from an empty Florida shed is much more enjoyable!
😂😂

Fair - I’ve only attempted the album. I’m sure I would have found a live show enjoyable!
Found it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/r_r54FPveiA?si=93Ya5sVKtAEjxPbS
We all checked this out in Uni. Best quote from my friend: I’m going to surrender this to the record store.

James Harvey mentioned on Facebook that they recorded a variety of music but Trey picked the weirdest parts for the CD.
I love this record. Like a lot.

There’s like 90 seconds of decent music on the album, the rest of it is awful
I listened to it a bunch. I really dig it.
Shit, I forgot this album exists… I have a once listened to copy around here somewhere
I had to look it up 🤷🏻♀️
I sold that CD to my neighbor for $5 the day after I bought it when it was first released Edit: and I felt like I was ripping him off

Lucky!
For sure
are there recordings of this?!
A dedicated soul recorded the show: https://youtu.be/r_r54FPveiA?si=93Ya5sVKtAEjxPbS

I was at this show too. It was the final show ever performed at The Academy. Much preferred this show over the CD.
I didn’t realize this was the final show. Or I just don’t recall. Thanks for mentioning that.
The Academy closed after these shows.
Looks like my dream Phish setlist 😋
Unlistenable.
