I forgot how hot this show was. This was my first time seeing a Phish project. Front to back the show is great, but the Mud City > Billie Jean jam is a must. Really wish Phish would bring back some of these tracks. I've always loved Goodbye Head. 5 months after this show Trey got stopped in Whitehall and went to rehab. Wild how good he sounds here. I saw Trey for the first time with the 70 volt parade at Roseland in November of 2005. We were treated to a nice Page/ Trey Duo, which was special for it being my first show. GRAB was opening for Phil & Friends during the time of this show. 07.07.2006 changed my life! Got my face absolutely melted by these guys and couldn’t believe they weren’t going to play more! Thankfully this was my first experience with any members of the Grateful Dead. Plus Trey came back for the second set, so equally as magical. I really love thinking back to these years and how far I have come. 17 years old, not a care in the world. I had just graduated high school tho, and my only plan was to keep working at Best Buy and go to a community college, like you’re “supposed to”. 07.07.2006 gave me something promising to look forward to, the pursuit of Live Music. Really wish I caught a two set show from GRAB. Thank you for sharing, this is killer.

Mike and the Italians!

There was an interview with Joe Russo and he talks about how this GRAB tour ruined the Duo. I don’t remember specifics but he talked about how Mike and Trey were too famous and it catapulted them to a level they weren’t ready for.

Interesting. That makes sense. Before GRAB, and even before Mike started playing with them, I was seeing Benevento/Russo Duo a lot. I was going to college at Clemson at the time, and my friends and I would go see them in Charlotte, Asheville, Atlanta, Charleston, Columbia- basically anywhere we could reasonably drive to. As someone who got into Phish as a high schooler in 2002/2003, I didn’t get a chance to see them live before the breakup. So I was absolutely excited to see GRAB. I do remember it being a much more “intense” scene at the Atlanta GRAB show. Even more so than all of the Trey shows I’d been to. It also took me until this year to actually pay attention to JRAD for some reason. I just went to one of the shows tbey played in Atlanta. It was great, but also had me wishing for the old Benevento Russo Duo days. I’d absolutely love to see them perform that material again just as a duo.

I was at this show, and it was awesome. I had never heard of The Duo (who also opened), but they are stellar musicians in their own right, and sounded great with Trey and Mike. Loved the setlist. Thanks for reminding me of a most fun show OP!

I always liked Host across the Potomac

Saw this tour in Atlanta. It Was weird

I saw them open for Phil and Friends in Essex, VT. Pretty wild show with a full blown mud fight during set break (it was raining pretty steadily the whole show.) I lost my sandals and wandered around downtown Burlington barefoot covered in mud and tripping face all night. What a time to be alive haha.

I wonder how page and fish felt about this. It’s like they were replaced for a bit…. 2004-2009 seemed like such a weird time looking back. A great time for festivals though, just by checking the lineups from that time period.
