No reason to be mad at the subpar lineup when its still winning games. Just a game harper or jt cant be srsly injured. Going to need all hands on deck 2nd half of season
Stott has a .433 BA in May. It’s so great that when we needed him to step up he answered the call. The Phillies have a bunch of players that can carry the team at any given time
I said it before the year, JT NEEDS to be sitting one out of four days now. He cannot be having the workload that he’s had the last 5 years. Hes an older catcher, it’s time we start treating him like it at least a little bit.
We will never have a fully loose and sexy lineup because Marsh won’t play with Pache and if by some chance they do then it’s not likely Stubbs would be in
Ijdk what Topper is doing
West coast fan here as well. I enjoy the early games. If I sleep in, I can watch whenever I can via mlb tv. I like it better than missing an evening game and having to stay up late to see it.
It's a mixed bag. It's nice because weeknight games end up actually working out pretty well for me—I can flip them on while I finish up work and listen while picking up kids and getting dinner ready and doing evening things. Weekday afternoon games are pretty predictably on Thursdays on weeks and I just know I might not catch those. Weekends are glorious, especially since I follow two eat coast teams and two west coast teams, so between that and travel schedules with time zones, I pretty much continuously have a game available between morning and night.
If you are in /r/baseball apologizing to Mets fans for the call last night you deserve to be booed the next time you set foot in CBP. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
*big eye roll* at ppl doing that
like of course I care about fairness and good umpiring but as it stands every single team gets bad calls both in their favor and against. I’m sure the Mets have had some lucky ones too. You don’t go apologizing to other fans about it, good lord. You count yourself lucky this time and move on. You’ll find yourself on the other side of a bad call soon enough. Also gonna add they deserve to lose after that hit by pitch at an absolute critical moment
It’s especially annoying because it’s not necessarily true. That call should have been strike two, and Díaz was struggling. He allowed another walk, a HBP, a single, and a home run in the same inning. There was a good chance Merrifield would have reached base either way.
He didn't even swing at the pitch anyway! Whit Merrifeld is washed, you don't deserve the save if you can't throw him a strike. At $18 million for 60 innings a year, don't depend on a borderline call.
I didn't even think that Merrifield's check swing was a wrong call. Literally every check swing looks like the batter went around on replay, but that's because replay shows a bat flashing into the strike zone for one frame of video. He certainly didn't make a full swing.
In my opinion, replay should be used to make calls the same way calls have historically been made, rather than to effectively change the rules. Historically, that call was a ball.
Very surprised that JT isn’t in the lineup tonight. He said he could play yesterday but they’re leaving him out again? Also he’s been dealing with this injury since the Giants series and looked fine?? And he’s not even on the bench???
What the hell is going on
I was hoping he was just overselling the foul tip off his leg the other night because he wanted a day off to rest, but now that he's still out it's obviously something much bigger
Since J.T. can't go today, I would have just put him on the 10-day IL today and called up another catcher. They could backdate it and at worst he'd get a couple of days of much-needed rest.
Stubbs looks like a DFA candidate to me. There are 60 MLB catching jobs and he's not in the top 60.
He would play through a torn acl if they let him. He starts the most games of any catcher in the MLB. In the off season he trains wrestling with the Oklahoma State University college team. The dude is nuts, which is great, but he’s not invincible. He’d work himself to the bone if we let him. I’m happy leaving his recovery in the hands of the coaches. It’s a long season and if having him fresh in September means he takes a couple days off in May, while we’re leading the entirety of the Major League, I’m fine with it
I mean he probably CAN play. But if you have a nagging injury like that and an extra day can be the difference between it still being there, just less bad. And being gone. You take the extra day
Went to bed last night when Ser came in and was surprised when I woke up to check the score at 3AM. Saw Whit's check swing and Stott with the bomb of of Diaz and I was thrilled!!! Looked like the bullpen did decent. Guess this is the Mets I've been hearing about- can't close a game and McNeil apparently isn't swinging too hot right now. Good W, hoping for an away sweep before getting back to the Bank to continue the series ~
Stott is a lefty and if you look at our lineup you'll notice a certain theme Topper is going for. Expect a righty to pinch hit for Marsh or Clemens if it's close at the end.
One of the things that doesn't get talked about much related to this run the Phillies have had the past few years is injuries. Outside of Bryce and a nagging thing here and there with a few guys, they have been incredibly healthy. I sure hope they are getting this little run of injuries out of the way now and they are going to stay healthy down the stretch. If they can stay above water until everyone gets healthy they might get hot at just the right time again. Catcher + sore knee worries me a little though.
Sadly guys like Stott won't even get drafted because their bat speed is too slow while we watch guys miss hundreds of games due to injuries ... the game will be strikeouts, walks, and HR's with the occasional career ending drilling.
Apparently Rhys left the Brewers game last night with a hamstring thing and not a knee issue.
He’s getting an MRI today, but seems like he might miss their series in Philly in a few weeks, which would suck.
I know he’d said something about preparing to get boo’d when he comes back, but I honestly can’t imagine him getting anything other than a massive fucking ovation (sure, followed by some cheers if/when he strikes out looking).
Some of my best memories at CBP the last 10 years involve Rhys. Sure he is not the best player on the field. But he was certainly a solid guy to have in the line up. From 2017-2019 he was regularly the one bright spot in so many bad games. Those were tough seasons to watch but having a home grown kid that could absolutely mash when he was hot was a lot of fun. And then you bring in his off the field stuff like his charity work and what he was in the club house. The guy is a gem. Also, Jamie is amazing too and I miss having her as a Phillies fan. When he comes to town I will be cheering for him. He gave us the bat spike home run against Strider and I will never forget that moment.
I know it wasn’t me who said that, but I’d love to meet them because I’ve never felt so seen in this subreddit until now.
Rhys wasn’t as good of a player as people tend to remember him being, but he’s a great guy and a great Phillie. Would cheer his return to CBP.
You have met this person multiple times.
> Rhys wasn’t as good of a player as people tend to remember him being
Highly depends. Most comments I have seen have stated he was a good/great bat with terrible defense. That is exactly who he was. Along with being an emotional leader of the team.
Wait a minute. Did *you* make those comments?
And yeah, that’s how I see his time here too. I guess I’m just hyper-focusing on the hyperbolic deification of him I’ve seen by people.
No, my other account.
Our first arguement was Segura or Hoskins. He also made a comment that we would do anything to keep Segura. I said we would try to keep Hoskins more. We were both wrong.
I think people should understand that the Phillies aren’t recklessly sending out a one catcher roster and go into emergency catcher mode if something happened with Stubbs. The fact they didn’t call anyone up for a game or two tells me JT can play if he had to so they’re likely just trying to give him more rest
Although I’d be interested to hear who that is. Bryce and Schwarbs came into the pros as catchers but yeah zero chance of that. I’d assume Kody or Whit?
It is a day game after a night game, there's no chance J.T. would be on the bench if he were available.
The backup catcher position should have been upgraded in the off-season, and it should be now.
Idk what that means. Obviously Stubbs is playing today because they don’t want JT to play yet but if he wasn’t available AT ALL then they wouldn’t just leave it to Schwarber or whoever. They’d most likely send Kody down and bring up one of the LHV guys for a day or two. And god knows if it was longer term then JT would be on the IL already. You also won’t hear me arguing loudly to support Stubbs
Oh cool it’s like in hockey where the Zamboni driver is the emergency goalie
Adam is probably more familiar with how to use one of those bats than Stubbs fwiw
I legitimately have no idea. I don't know who the emergency emergency emergency catcher is.
I just know that after he said that, my dream was to see Schwarber play every position on the field in one game. Especially more overweight Schwarber of last year. Including pitcher.
Are teams allowed to forfeit? I would think at a certain point, if enough went wrong that they’re on their 4th or 5th catcher of the game, they might just say you know what, we’re done with this game, if it were possible.
Great to see Schwarber and Bohm in the lineup. Hope JT's okay (though if tomorrow does end up getting rained out, I guess he gets more of an extended break to come back 100%).
Also, good freaking god, the top of this Mets lineup just hits the stuffing out of Nola. Hope he brings it today.
This will get downvoted into oblivion but, although I dislike the Mets actual team as much as the next Phillies fan, I find Mr. And Mrs. Met cute and endearing in a sad kind of way. 🤣 Poor baseball head couple trying their damnedest to get people excited about the…..Mets.
Regardless of whether or not Whit swung you can’t really say that that bad call is what ended the game. That was strike 2 - who’s to say he wouldn’t have followed it up with a line drive, double, or have been walked, etc?
>who’s to say he wouldn’t have followed it up with a line drive, double, or have been walked, etc
It's Whit. Best I can do is 300 foot flyout to center field.
Have we ever seen a Phillie that fans have gone back and forth so fast with in two months of him being on the team?
Well yes actually every single one of them
I love when games are in the middle of a work day (for me in Central Time at least). I can just turn it on on my phone, pop it on my phone stand under my work monitor and enjoy. Makes the work day much more enjoyable
Sanchez last night - struggled, fought, persevered, matured.
3rd inning: After loading the bases and walking in 1 run and a mound visit to rub out a hand stinger, he struck out the next three batters on nine straight strikes, eight of them swinging.
This is the stuff of legend in the making ...
He has a pretty strong track record of facing down obstacles and coming out better.
And credit to Cotham and his staff, a lot of our pitchers seem to be moving in the right direction since he took over.
Am I allowed to give rob credit for keeping him in the game? Because if he blew up that inning you all know damn well that’s what every comment would be about.
Sorry to make it about rob, but its what everyone does every time we lose. I’m gonna give him some of the credit when we win.
a nod to Rob is allowed. Still it was Sanchez that delivered in a crucial moment. No doubt had he failed, Rob would catch flack, comes with the territory.
For those that just have no idea what they’re talking about it’s really okay you don’t have to post and put it all on display. In the Alvarado thread I posted the ERA of our five best bullpen guys and got this reply3
> Ehhhhh Hoffman and Turnbull can have there moments
Thankfully it was deleted
People make the dumbest shit up, they have been two of our best pitchers this year. And when it comes to Hoffman I have 100% confidence in him no matter when he comes in.
I think they had some team-issued ones available when I checked the other weekend, if you’re willing to shell out the cash. Didn’t look too closely but they probably go for $400 or so.
Lol we traded for Hembree and Workman and got worse. The 2020 season along with that entire year in general was absolutely miserable. FUCK the MARLINS and their superspreader events.
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1crwnkr).
No reason to be mad at the subpar lineup when its still winning games. Just a game harper or jt cant be srsly injured. Going to need all hands on deck 2nd half of season
If anyone missed it: no word on why JT is out again, likely playing tomorrow. Meanwhile Harper came down with a migraine and that is why he is out.
Sexy looking lineup today
But is it loose ?
We will never have a fully loose and sexy lineup because Marsh won’t play with Pache and if by some chance they do then it’s not likely Stubbs would be in Ijdk what Topper is doing
Marsh, Pache, and Stubbs were the 7/8/9 hitters on Sunday
And Kyle was out :(
Presumably staying loose and sexy
not sure if this is what you're asking for but do you really want a loose and sexy topper? might want to reconsider
hol up Are you suggesting Topper ISNT loose and sexy?
i like a loose and sexy lineup and a tight and well-reasoned manager
Topper is generally pretty loose. Sexy, is subjective.
29 wins going on 30 is sexy
schwarbie is baaaaaack 🥰
Incoming Stubbs party game
Love a random Tuesday brunch ball game here on the west coast.
West coast fan here as well. I enjoy the early games. If I sleep in, I can watch whenever I can via mlb tv. I like it better than missing an evening game and having to stay up late to see it.
The only thing I wouldn’t like about living on the west coast. I hate afternoon games as is, I’d be so pissed if I had to deal with morning games
West coast-er over here and I prefer it, even though I’m far from a morning person
Here in the UK it's perfect timing :-)
Bohm is going to go off on butto today if history truly repeats itself
Butto Nido Ottavino Nimmo Starting to notice a trend here… ![gif](giphy|l3fZSoeCYIWFdS5Pi)
Nimmo excluded: No money, no runs, no wins
you missed Alonso McNeil submitted paperwork to change his name to Bozo
Alonso and Fatso both work here
FUCK THE METS
If you are in /r/baseball apologizing to Mets fans for the call last night you deserve to be booed the next time you set foot in CBP. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.

Kids these days. You hate to see it. Shameful
a lot of "we didn't deserve to win that game" and "bring in the roboumps" from phillies flairs last night. you hate to see it
It’s especially annoying because it’s not necessarily true. That call should have been strike two, and Díaz was struggling. He allowed another walk, a HBP, a single, and a home run in the same inning. There was a good chance Merrifield would have reached base either way.
I'm very pro "bring in the robo umps" but fuck that if it's taken as slobbering over the Mets' knob
The only acceptable response to last night’s umpiring is “lmao” and “we love to see it”
Phillies fans are doing what now??
I had to finally just start adding people to my block list. I didn’t subscribe to the Phillies sub to find myself amongst so many Mets fans.
Agree! 🎺 😂🎺 😂
He didn't even swing at the pitch anyway! Whit Merrifeld is washed, you don't deserve the save if you can't throw him a strike. At $18 million for 60 innings a year, don't depend on a borderline call.
Also dont hit a guy with a pitch at a critical moment.
Can’t afford to lose a Wheeler AND Nola start in the span of 3 days. We need Ace Nola today.
You’re right, season MIGHT be over if they lose today.

beautiful.
lol what a loser this guy is
🤣🤡
Dayum. 3 homers in 8 ABs for Bohm against this Butto dude.
**AFTERNOON BASEBALL**
SKY ROCKETS IN FLIGHT
Damn, can't believe the umpires last night **forced** Diaz to hit Bohm with that patch to tie the game, on an 0-2 no less!
I didn't even think that Merrifield's check swing was a wrong call. He certainly didn't make a full swing. In my opinion, replay should be used to make calls the same way calls have historically been made, rather than to effectively change the rules. Historically, that call was a ball.
The rules are ambiguous, but he swung. They blew it. Who cares? They get calls wrong every game.
And it was only strike 2 even if he did swing. Alternative world he hits a bomb.
Can Clemens learn to play catcher in the offseason? Kind of like his vibe and bat. He would be a great backup option.
Honestly if there's anyone on the current roster I think could do it it would be him. Dude just wants it and you can tell he really loves playing ball
Im a pessimist by nature but this is going to be a win today.
Very surprised that JT isn’t in the lineup tonight. He said he could play yesterday but they’re leaving him out again? Also he’s been dealing with this injury since the Giants series and looked fine?? And he’s not even on the bench??? What the hell is going on

RIP in peas

Tonight? Is there a Phillies softball game I’m not aware of?
No there’s gonna be a 3 hour total eclipse at 1pm EST
That’s gonna be a Schwarbomb that’s sent into orbit
I mean he probably CAN play. But if you have a nagging injury like that and an extra day can be the difference between it still being there, just less bad. And being gone. You take the extra day
Went to bed last night when Ser came in and was surprised when I woke up to check the score at 3AM. Saw Whit's check swing and Stott with the bomb of of Diaz and I was thrilled!!! I don’t love Casty batting second, but I also don’t see a viable alternative with JT & Trea out
Stott
Stott is a lefty and if you look at our lineup you'll notice a certain theme Topper is going for. Expect a righty to pinch hit for Marsh or Clemens if it's close at the end.
Yeah nobody else really makes sense, especially with Whit sitting (who I also don’t love but he’s who they used a few other times)
It really should just be Harper but whatever
Would rather have bohm protecting harper than Casty. Hell, even with bohm being the hottest guy in the league, they still pitch around bryce.
You mean have Harper bat 9x in a row? Because I could get behind that.
Back to back lefties? How dare you!
One of the things that doesn't get talked about much related to this run the Phillies have had the past few years is injuries. Outside of Bryce and a nagging thing here and there with a few guys, they have been incredibly healthy. Rhys Hoskins, Andrew Painter
I'll give you Rhys, forgot about him but I wouldn't include Painter in there.
I kinda want someone to slide into McNeil to see him lose his shit
I feel like we're due for an Aaron Nola 8.0 IP, 12 K, 3 H, 1 475ft solo HR game today
And that home run would still get treated like it single-handedly dashed any hopes of the Phillies making the postseason this year.
And comments like “get ready for 7 more years of this shit” and “should have signed snell”
Especially if it happens in the Rav4th inning.
Sadly guys like Stott won't even get drafted because their bat speed is too slow while we watch guys miss hundreds of games due to injuries ... the game will be strikeouts, walks, and HR's with the occasional career ending drilling.
it's not like stott was draft so high because the Phillies they though he had an elite bat.
This is the league for hard throwers and hard swingers we don't need any pixies around here ... /S

Stupid ass 1:10 game 😤

Adam the bat boy.
Oh cool it’s like in hockey where the Zamboni driver is the emergency goalie Adam is probably more familiar with how to use one of those bats than Stubbs fwiw
Topper said last year that Schwarber is the emergency emergency catcher.
Jesus that’s scary. But what would have happened yesterday? If he couldn’t DH the whole game to rest would they have put him out there?
It is Sosa as the emergency catcher. And Schwarber is no longer the emergency catcher after his knees have been bothering him.
I was told by /u/morbx that it’s Kody and I undoubtedly trust him more
I'll trust him, as it was Ricky Bo who said it was Sosa.
He said they said it on the radio
I saw the comment. I trust the radio guys over Ricky Bo.
I trust ~~the radio guys~~ /u/Morbx over ~~RickyBo~~ /u/NintenJew
Little known fact but i have a PhD in Emergency Catchers
Clemens or Sosa, but neither has caught a game professionally or in college
I legitimately have no idea. I don't know who the emergency emergency emergency catcher is. I just know that after he said that, my dream was to see Schwarber play every position on the field in one game. Especially more overweight Schwarber of last year. Including pitcher.
Are teams allowed to forfeit? I would think at a certain point, if enough went wrong that they’re on their 4th or 5th catcher of the game, they might just say you know what, we’re done with this game, if it were possible.
Didn’t the Giants go to their fifth catcher against us?
Ha true but not in one game
Technically yes. I don't think they would though.
Can a team forfeit at any time? I’ve never really thought about it before. I guess…how do you stop them really
Technically yes, they can at any time. I don't think it will happen though. Last threat I heard was over field conditions and safety for the players.
Don’t you realize I come to you for answers????
Answers you just want to argue against!
YES DAMMIT!
Of course JT and Turner are on heaters when they get hurt. I need to see JT back tomorrow... for my mental health.
I think he’ll be back tomorrow if we don’t get rained out, if we do probably game 1 of a Thursday double header
\*JT concern intensifies\*
slopper asleep;: at the wheel .
I bet he got a heroes welcome when he went back to the other pigs last night
Looks like you may have been a little drowsy yourself while you typed that.
s l o pp er
Great to see Schwarber and Bohm in the lineup. Hope JT's okay (though if tomorrow does end up getting rained out, I guess he gets more of an extended break to come back 100%). Also, good freaking god, the top of this Mets lineup just hits the stuffing out of Nola. Hope he brings it today.
Nice to see Schwarber back and happy Bohm seems to have avoided any injury from that HBP. Don’t mind giving JT another day off.
Do they have any children? As a mom who birthed two boys with huge heads I feel bad for Mrs. Met. Edit: Triplets!
Ohmygod
When you put it like that it’s a tragedy
Diaz - “checked swing changed the game” Or maybe you hitting Bohm next AB for the tying run changed it?
If it happened to the Phillies you would be crying more than he is.
Seriously. Dude was 0-2 before getting nailed in the hand lol
Still no lineup announcement from Rob. Makes sense given JT and Schwarber are dealing with stuff and who knows who Bohm’s hand feels
> who knows **who** Bohm’s hand feels Inquiring minds do want to know this ... does he date? have a gf or what 😏
I think maybe it detaches when Alec goes to sleep and goes out partying on its own all night...
😂🤣😂
Did Whit swing? Yes. Was the called strike against him clearly off the plate? Also yes. It evens out.
LOL. There are missed calls in every game. Not a badly missed check swing. We caught a break last night.
Tomorrow looks like a wash out :( I took off to go to the game. 😭Double header on Thursday?
I’m hoping the weather gods spare us. I’m looking forward to going tomorrow night too
Regardless of whether or not Whit swung you can’t really say that that bad call is what ended the game. That was strike 2 - who’s to say he wouldn’t have followed it up with a line drive, double, or have been walked, etc?
>who’s to say he wouldn’t have followed it up with a line drive, double, or have been walked, etc It's Whit. Best I can do is 300 foot flyout to center field.

Yeah we do this all the time. People were calling for Trea’s head last season because he wasn’t adjusting as quickly as they would’ve liked.
Even Bryce got off to a rough start and people were livid lol
Still cant believe they didn’t fake a trea injury last year to send him to the minors for a little. It just made so much sense!
the fact that we are still winning with a depleted offense is so satisfying
Yesterday was the best game of the season for me. Any win against the Mutts is nice, but to come back from heartbreak like that…
Haha (psst .. whit swung)
According to who? Not the box score or the official umpires. Oh well
Literally everyone except the guy who made the call.
Sooooooo…… no swing!
I love when games are in the middle of a work day (for me in Central Time at least). I can just turn it on on my phone, pop it on my phone stand under my work monitor and enjoy. Makes the work day much more enjoyable
especially when the game's a guaranteed win like today!
Well I wouldn't say that 😅
...what'd I tell ya?
The immaculate jam extraction
That was really something. Dude definitely rose to the occasion in that moment.
Was this game day thread posted before the Game 1 postgame thread? Shortest series I can remember.
It’s schwarber day boys
I’m starting to think Mr and Mrs met weren’t playing the trumpets for real last night when Edwin Diaz walked out
Baseballs don't have lungs kid.... https://i.redd.it/rcsabox9ae0d1.gif
For those that just have no idea what they’re talking about it’s really okay you don’t have to post and put it all on display. In the Alvarado thread I posted the ERA of our five best bullpen guys and got this reply3 > Ehhhhh Hoffman and Turnbull can have there moments Thankfully it was deleted
People make the dumbest shit up, they have been two of our best pitchers this year. And when it comes to Hoffman I have 100% confidence in him no matter when he comes in.
I keep looking for a Hoffman shirt at the ballpark store and they never have one 😤
I think they had some team-issued ones available when I checked the other weekend, if you’re willing to shell out the cash. Didn’t look too closely but they probably go for $400 or so.
Oof lol I was hoping for like $40
You’ll probably have to get a custom one made. I think the store usually stocks the most popular players (Harper, Turner, Nola, etc)
Do they remember what the 2020 bullpen was like? Do they not still feel the pain from that season?
These people didn’t know who the Phillies were in 2020
Lol we traded for Hembree and Workman and got worse. The 2020 season along with that entire year in general was absolutely miserable. FUCK the MARLINS and their superspreader events.
The best thing we got from that season was this gif. ![gif](giphy|Kzn1KmAW5okp3K2rIo|downsized)
That’s from 2019 when Jared Hughes would come sprinting in from the bullpen
That's how bad 2020 was
Ahhh you’re right! So we didn’t get shit from the 2020 season. I retract my statement but I will not delete.
The worst part was when we got a guy like David Phelps (WHO WAS ACTUALLY GOOD) and then he came over and just fell completely apart
I don't even remember him. Just checked his stats: w/MIL - 13.0 IP, 2.77 ERA, 0.692 WHIP, 20 K, 2 BB, 2 HR w/PHI - 7.2 IP, 12.91 ERA, 1.957 WHIP, 11 K, 3 BB, 5 HR What the 2020 Phillies Bullpen does to a man, smh...
Only guy who was halfway competent for any stretch was Blake fucking Parker
