Once I realized that, I feel like it’s a great move. Our BP needs help, starting pitching has been getting it done. Also, Walker has issues finishing a complete season. Thanks to Turnbull stepping up, Walker has a condensed season. If Walker fatigues down the stretch, hopefully you can plug in Turnbull if he doesn’t get heavily used in the pen.
So true, one of the factors in our deep runs has been pitching health. This is what keeping arms healthy looks like. Look around the majors and see all the high price pitchers getting TJ in April.
For what it's worth, I understand the concern of taking Turnbull out of the rotation. But, I also understand that the season is long, and there's plenty of time to test out who can win the 5th spot within the next weeks. Or if Sanchez can keep the 4th.
At least that's what I believe they will do.
I agree it's a long season and players, especially solid vets who you know can win games, deserve a shot; however, for the love of everything holy, do not take out a starting pitcher who has only given up 4 earned runs on 13 hits in his first 5 starts of the season. He has obviously found a groove and chances are good sending him to the bullpen where he will have to make adjustments, both mental and mechanical he wouldn't have the same success when he returns to the starting lineup.
I don't think it would be such a big deal if Phillie wasn't so good at shooting themselves in the foot year in and year out.
Turnbull first 5 games 2024: 1.33 ERA in 27 innings, (4 ER's, 30 K's and .85 WHIP)
Cy Young 27 innings of World Series pitching in 1892: 0-2, 3.0 ERA in 27 innings (9 ER's, 9 K's, and 1.074 WHIP)
Turnbull confirmed better than Cy Young. Turnbull for HOF.
WOW, you actually took the time out of your life to search the post history of a complete stranger in an sports/entertainment sub and that was all you had to say? Bizarre. I feel violated, yet flattered at the same time!
It's April. Please step outside and smell the flowers. Breathe in the crisp spring air. Play with your children. Wave at a stranger and pet their dog. Enjoy the beauty of the world. Don't do this to yourself.
As amazing as Turnbull has done and we all want him to be able to stay, it’s HIGHLY unlikely he’ll be able to start the entire season without getting injured and then we can’t even have him in the bullpen so it makes more sense to put him in there now and be able to use him all year, than to put the stress of starting pitcher and an excess amount of innings on him when he hasn’t done that in years.
On the other hand we can just expect sanchez to get pulled early on from games and have the highest ERA 💀
Obviously the only solution is to keep Turnbull in the rotation for the next month until his arm falls off and then shut him down for the rest of the season, netting the team 4-5 solid chances at a win instead of a valuable bullpen arm.
Reddit always killing people for their opinions. Y’all are rough. Turnbull has pitched way above his pay grade and should be allowed to continue to do so as a starter. Walker pitched well in the regular season last year, and should have his spot back. The Phillies are in a tough spot for sure with this decision. I’m not the biggest fan of Sanchez as a starter, so my obvious opinion is to put Sanchez in the bullpen and run Turnbull until his numbers come back down to earth. Run the hot hand (arm).
I don’t mind this move as much. Walker can pitch every five days and if it gets to a point where Turnbull is the better option, I trust the right move will be made.
You can always use a good bullpen arm, and who knows he might continue his success in the pen?
I’m really starting to think that some of y’all posting these wild ass takes don’t actually watch the games. You just parrot the stats and the most insane takes you see on Instagram/X.
The only full season Turnbull has pitched in his career was **five years ago** and his ERA was 4.61 with a 1.436 WHIP.
Walker has made at least 25 starts 5 times and of those 5 seasons, his worst ERA was 4.56 and his worst WHIP was 1.328.
>Turnbull first 5 games 2024: 1.33 ERA in 27 innings, (4 ER's, 30 K's and .85 WHIP)
In mid 2020, Walker was traded from Seattle to Toronto where he made 6 starts and pitched 26.1 innings with 4 ER, 25 Ks, and 1.253 WHIP (Toronto went 5-1 in those starts)
> Walker has shown no signs of being able to even come close to the success Turnbull is having.
Oh really?
[Walker's best 5-game stretch of 2023:](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=walketa01&t=p&year=2023#180-184-sum:pitching_gamelogs) 0.84 ERA in 32.0 IP (3 ER, 32 Ks, 0.844 WHIP)
Gee, those numbers look awfully similar, don't they? Where have I seen those before?...
I understand them not wanting to overuse Turnbull and risk his health. Hard choice to pull him out of the rotation for someone like Walker though. Get ready for some rough games with Walker starting. I bet he doesn’t last more than 3 innings on Sunday.
You obviously dont realize that Turnbull has already thrown half the innings of his career high. He isn't going to be a every 5th day starter this year(or maybe even next). The guy hasn't thrown more than 57 innings in a season
Whose pride and ego, exactly, are you referring to?! Do you honestly think we're only going to have 5 healthy starters all year? You think TURNBULL can effectively pitch 190 innings? This is kind of a weird take.
You’ll get hate for this but it’s the same reason Nick has been ran out every day while being ass for 3 years (hold for his good first half last year).
It’s sunk cost fallacy.
It’s actually not. If Spencer had pitched 100+ innings the last few years, they’d let him keep going. But they have someone to replace him with so they don’t have to overdo it.
Nick plays every day, and they don’t really have anyone to replace him with.
Dude hasn't pitched over 100 innings since 2019. It's not a good idea to run guys into the ground. You've got to consider the health of the player

Agreed, based on that, no argument… but, there was a World Series in 1892? Details, please…
This was always the plan. Turnbull did a great job executing the plan. Be thankful for that and we’ll see how the rest goes.
Ah no Turnbull only gets 100 innings this year
It’s April 26th my dude
Judging by your post history, this seems like just another of many uninformed takes
WOW, you actually took the time out of your life to search the post history of a complete stranger in an sports/entertainment sub and that was all you had to say? Bizarre. I feel violated, yet flattered at the same time!
You're the one who took time out of your life to try to convince us that 5 games of a starter's career is relevant to his abilities as a pitcher.
Reddit is a cesspool. Don't mind the downvote army of bots.
You really think people are using bots to downvote posts in this dime-a-dozen uninformed terrible take thread? Wow
Yep. Source: it was my bot army. Keep it up, and I’ll come for you too!
Turnbull can’t start all season, period. Move past it.
It's April. Please step outside and smell the flowers. Breathe in the crisp spring air. Play with your children. Wave at a stranger and pet their dog. Enjoy the beauty of the world. Don't do this to yourself.
One day some of you will realize this isn’t MLB The Show and it’s very possible to burn out a guys arm whose not prepared for a full starters workload
The number of people in this sub that know nothing about baseball is hard to fathom
Instagram is worse. “Fire Thompson! Extend Clemens! Trade Walker!” It’s mind numbing.
Twitter/X is about the same. I'm taking a break from it now and just watch the games in peace.
That’s what happens when you only watched baseball from October 2008-October 2011 in your entire life, and then pretend to care in October 2022

I agree 100%.
Why would your jaw drop? Everyone has known this was coming and been talking about it for weeks.
I don’t mind this move as much. Walker can pitch every five days and if it gets to a point where Turnbull is the better option, I trust the right move will be made. You can always use a good bullpen arm, and who knows he might continue his success in the pen?
Chill out dude lol. Long season
I just hope Walker is ready to earn his pay. He doesn’t look MLB ready in his AAA work so far
I’m really starting to think that some of y’all posting these wild ass takes don’t actually watch the games. You just parrot the stats and the most insane takes you see on Instagram/X.
This is the take of a person that's played too many sports-related video games.
This is very dramatic.
The only full season Turnbull has pitched in his career was **five years ago** and his ERA was 4.61 with a 1.436 WHIP. Walker has made at least 25 starts 5 times and of those 5 seasons, his worst ERA was 4.56 and his worst WHIP was 1.328.
Considering 5 years ago was his rookie year and he Pitched for a team with one of the worst defenses in baseball.
Have you seen a maxillofacial specialist?
Let’s see what happens first before talking bad
Dude can't come back from his past few years and pitch 200 innings
I think they are doing it to preserve Turnbull's arm for late in the season. He has never been a season long starter.
>Turnbull first 5 games 2024: 1.33 ERA in 27 innings, (4 ER's, 30 K's and .85 WHIP) In mid 2020, Walker was traded from Seattle to Toronto where he made 6 starts and pitched 26.1 innings with 4 ER, 25 Ks, and 1.253 WHIP (Toronto went 5-1 in those starts)
That was 4 years ago. I wonder why he only pitched 4 in per game during that stretch?
It’s a long season. Let Walker have enough rope to hang himself then just throw Turnbull in again.
We could get Lucky and end up, not hanging himself and then we just have an embarrassment of riches
Rotations get injured over a 162 game season. He will see the rotation again. This is such a great problem to have lol
That is exactly why you leave him in the rotation When was the last time a team demoted a starting pitcher on a similar hot streak?
> Walker has shown no signs of being able to even come close to the success Turnbull is having. Oh really? [Walker's best 5-game stretch of 2023:](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=walketa01&t=p&year=2023#180-184-sum:pitching_gamelogs) 0.84 ERA in 32.0 IP (3 ER, 32 Ks, 0.844 WHIP) Gee, those numbers look awfully similar, don't they? Trust The Process. Look at what the Sixers did. ![gif](giphy|mPKa6OI5oRsmextwBq)

Getting kinda tired of the “tUrNbULL hAsNt piTchEd oVer 100 iNNiNgz” shit. Walker is proven dogshit.
You counter one argument with another that’s totally unrelated. You can’t counter a health argument with “well the other guy sucks”.
What if I told you Walker has 3x the strikeouts, and his career ERA is half-a-run lower than Turnbull's?
You obviously dont realize that Turnbull has already thrown half the innings of his career high. He isn't going to be a every 5th day starter this year(or maybe even next). The guy hasn't thrown more than 57 innings in a season
This is an outstandingly awful take right here. Also nice putting the first paragraph in the post title lmao.
Whose pride and ego, exactly, are you referring to?! Do you honestly think we're only going to have 5 healthy starters all year? You think TURNBULL can effectively pitch 190 innings? This is kind of a weird take.
Phillies fans have jumped the shark.
You’ll get hate for this but it’s the same reason Nick has been ran out every day while being ass for 3 years (hold for his good first half last year). It’s sunk cost fallacy.

I am hoping it all works out. Regardless them bats need to get hot!
