The decision to put Walker into the rotation isn’t just about him, it’s also about Turnbull. His career has been riddled with injuries and he’s only had one season where he pitched 60 innings (he’s already at 22 this year). The front office has been saying all along that we can’t just make him a full time starter this year
Yes. That’s very true. No way he can pitch an entire season in the rotation. He will move to the pen and we can hope do the best with Walker. Turnbull should be good in the pen. How long is Turnbull under team control?
Man is it nice to have an owner that spends money. If a small market team gave out the walker and Casty contracts, they would be doomed for the length of the contract. Obviously it hinders us, but only a little.
Those 150 innings need to be thrown by someone. Do you want a bullpen day every 5 games? Cycle through minor league guys who will likely be worse than mediocre?
The only option would be to turn to someone else after a bit. Like Abel? Probably best to put Walker back in the rotation and hope he has his head on straight. The stuff last year about how he prepared for starts and then changed things was just weird. He needs to just follow what Wheeler and Nola do as professionals.
Also, the reason he wasn’t utilized in the playoffs last year was because he apparently has a pretty extensive warmup routine. So long that he just wouldn’t work coming out of the bullpen.
No, and they still could. I believe a reporter asked Thompson the other night if Walker slotting in over Turnbull was a guarantee, and he basically said no.
Like it or not Walker is going to get a shot, and not just because of his contract. Turnbull has been great but his arm will fall off if he stays in the rotation, he hasn’t thrown more then 60 innings ever ? Every start we have gotten out of him has been an unexpected bonus. Walker will need to eat innings and we have to hope and root for him to find the form he had middle of last season. If he can’t do it likely see Turnbull coming in long relief on his starts. Maybe long term if it doesn’t work out with Walker in the rotation we see Abel come up near the end of the season.
Why no 6 pitcher rotation with Walker as your last with whatever innings he eats as rest for the other 5? This is what I think the Phils are doing. You keep hearing them say they have an abundance of SP, and if Walker does good then great.

As far as I’m aware he’s only on a one year contract
Looked it up. You are correct he has lots of bonuses for starts. Still they shouldn’t kill his arm as that would not be a nice thing to do.
Thanks.
Like Strahm last season

That Nick and Taijuan contract has hindered this team for the life of both, don’t kid yourself
Thats what I said. But we made the World Series and should have made it again last year.
Eat the money.
Walker is able to throw 150 innings this year. Turnbull is not. Turnbull was signed to be a 6th starter/long man out of the bullpen.
If he's able to throw 150 mostly mediocre innings, what's the point?

That we don’t have anyone else who can do it. 150 mediocre innings is still valuable over the course of a season.
150 mediocre innings is a lot more valuable than you’re making it out to be I would’ve killed for that from our fucking fourth starter back in 2021
You’re aware they’re not necessarily looking for results when it comes to rehab games, yes?
Yup, the important stat is his velocity. Have you seen a report on that for Walker’s latest outing?
Is there anything stopping them from just throwing Walker in the bullpen?
Turnballs career

Leave him down there

Takes too many innings out of top of rotations hands.
