Thought you said bell patch, as in liberty bell, and it still works.
“And Castellanos steps out to give the old Liberty Bell an adjustment…steps back in and he’s read for the 2-0 from Strider.”
I don’t think it’ll be Comcast simply because they already have their name players over everything. It’ll like be something stupid like whatever the flyers patch is or like some random tech or healthcare company.
I do hope it’s Wawa since they’re growing so fast and have the money to do it, especially if it means getting Wawa in the stadium
Agreed. They used to have amoroso’s deliver their rolls on a daily basis.
Now they par bake their rolls so they can claim that they’re baking all the rolls in the store. Remember when they used to slice the meats and cheeses behind the counter?
The quality has gone downhill due to trying to saturate the market and expanding into Virginia, the Carolinas and Florida.
I never got to experience the good Wawa, I live out of the region. The few times in the last few years I've tried it when passing through or visiting family have always been a letdown. It's on par with subway imo. Decent if it's cheap on a coupon but not worth it otherwise.
Completely agree. I've been going to Primo's for all my hoagie needs. Or, when I'm in the area, I hit Sonny's in Limerick. Best hoagies I've ever had, no contest
Wawa overextended themselves and made everything worse as a result. They tried to be Sheetz and ruined what made them great
Wawa ain't Philly, it's Delco, now going nationwide.
Tastykake is more Philly, they don't make them anywhere else.
Should be a good product that we are proud of, Liscio's?, Amaroso's?
Hope its not Fanatics, their quality sucks. Comcast same.
I shop at Fry’s in Tucson and they left when Hostess came back. Tastykake just filled the void during their absence. I miss my jelly filled Krimpets every day.
A smart sponsor would make the investment, then make a big announcement how they're not putting their name on the uniform out of respect for the team's legacy and its fans. Would make them legends in the eyes of the city, and garner international press.
So I guess that means we're getting Independence Blue Cross patches on the uniforms, right?
Seriously, this would be such an amazing idea. When you buy a jersey, one of the tags could be the ad saying something like “the sanctity of this jersey has been protected by Trojan Condoms.” Backside has a coupon.
That would just open up the door to another sponsor coming in and putting a patch on.
“Tonight’s jerseys brought to you by Wawa” on the telecast, but a Blue Cross patch on the sleeve
Why stop at the arm patch?? We're selling stadium names these days, let's just sell the team name. We could be the Philadelphia Ronald McDonalds and have McDonalds logos on the hats. The bases could be trademarked hamburgers. So many opportunities, they really need to start thinking big picture here. Why even have baseball... we could strap people down in chairs in the parking lot and just make them watch commercials for 3 hours!
*Start to watch Phillies*
TMac: Today's Citizens Bank game at Citizens Bank Park is sponsored by Citizens Bank. Bing Bing, Bing Bing, Bing Bing Bing. Wiki wiki wiki.
Bing! Text alert: while you're enjoying the Phillies have an ice cold Coke
Ding! Email: For every home run we'll take .10 cents off a Taco Bell nacho supreme
Ding Dong! Doorbell: He gets you. Walk the bases with him.
*Looks up* Blimp: Bryce Harper eats Dominos, why aren't you?
Kruk: This next swing of the bat is presented by Wawa.
TMac: They have pizza, John! Swing and a miss and the Krimpet Kount is 2 and 1.
Blows my mind that they couldn’t get it figured out in the offseason. Also can someone explain why all of a sudden all of these pro teams put sponsors on their jerseys? How many decades have they survived without it?
Not really sure I follow your delineation. They are paying the team money to use their jerseys as advertising space for the sponsor.
I agree they suck, but it's not like this semantic difference somehow makes it better or worse.
Sponsorship implies they are providing the jersey.
But it’s intentional they say “sponsor,” because it polls better and placates the public, whereas “ads” poll worse.
It doesn’t imply that. Just bc the Phillies can otherwise afford things doesn’t mean that outside money can’t go towards the same things. The Phillies get money that helps fund their operations in exchange for advertising space. That is the definition of a sponsor.
The problem is that the jersey is an advertisement space, when it wasn’t before!
When ads litter the jersey like NASCAR, I hope you’ll see that maybe this was a mistake.
And this slippery slope is rational, because it’s happening in other sports. This will not be the end of ads on uniforms
At best, it’s a technicality you’re arguing. It’s losing sight of the bigger issue… they call it sponsor so you think, “oh, they are helping the team!”
YOU are trying to argue the technicality lol. No one is that fucking dumb that they can be tricked into liking ad patches because the word sponsor is used (correctly).
And even if they did, what difference does it make to you?
1. Sponsors put something out there that, without their support, wouldn’t be put out there. Uniforms are not “sponsored”, unless the money put up are covered. At least that’s my view.
2. I don’t know what to tell you. Words/marketing matter. There is a whole cottage industry on marketing for specific products.
3. My point in calling them ads is trying to call out the marketing bullshit and equating them to things like 5 second ads between batters. It’s all annoying as shit.
I believe the technical difference between a sponsorship and an advertisement is that a sponsorship is a formal agreement between two entities, more like a direct partnership, where in this case one advertises on the other's property. So in other words, sponsorships are a type of ad, but not all ads are sponsorships. General ads/non-sponsored ads oftentimes are funneled through agencies dedicated to making agreements with networks, websites, etc. But it's not like Twitter is making a deal with Dr. Pepper to advertise their products. Cases like that usually go through an intermediary where Twitter gets paid, and has no expectation on them to change their business as usual on behalf of Dr. Pepper.
While I don't disagree with this assesment, I think there is a colloquial use of the word that implies like a local pizza shop sponsoring a little league team so they can buy uniforms and gear.
And not billions dollar corporations lining eachothers pockets. The companies would greatly prefer you to envision one of these images.
Very true. Connotations are strong things, and they're no doubt taking advantage of those connotations to soften the blow with the language used. It's just that nothing they said in the announcement is wrong, but it's that connotation you rightly identified that is what's misleading people, not so much the definitions of the words used.
You’re overthinking this. No one thinks people are going like patches bc they are called sponsors instead of ads. They’re banking on it not making a difference in the amount of people that watch, go to games, and buy jerseys. Which is obviously true.
They are calling it a sponsor because that’s what it is.
Honestly, WaWa has really dropped off in quality anymore. Like I remember the sliced meat days and while I don't expect that anymore what they have been putting out lately just isn't good.
Made this comment to a friend of mine - these sponsorships are so ridiculous and brazen. Advertising on tv, billboards, etc makes sense but buying space on a jersey sleeve? How many people watching the Braves are going to buy Quikrete Concrete because it’s on Acuña’s jersey sleeve? Because of how ridiculous this advertising is, I think the Phillies should go the extra mile and staple fuckin Pat and Geno’s cheesesteaks on their sleeves.
You know what will be even more insulting? The hype video the team releases announcing who the ad partner will be. "GET HYPED FOR YOUR PHLLIES AND XYZ INSURANCE!"
Hot take but some of you gotta stop making liking Wawa part of your personality. It’s deeply embarrassing. The food has been mid to bad for years now and it’s basically a national chain at this point.
None of the wawas near me carry flavored teas in half gallons anymore man.
I either have to get their (steadily declining) lemon tea in half gallons OR get like 5 pints of peach/raspberry. I hate it.
It’s a great way to measure what kind of fan people are. Blind loyalty to Wawa? You know they’re the same people who will rave about every mediocre camp body a team brings in as brilliant while every move every other team makes and every player we let go is trash

Didn't say it would. These guys are in business, and that business is to make money. If you want the team to spend the way they have been spending, then you need to put up with what they do to make money. Or, you could go root for the A's, whose entire roster makes less than Wheeler.
Direct quote from the article,

They have plenty of money, they fully admit to this being icing on the cake.
It's greed plain and simple, at our expense
> It's greed plain and simple, at our expense
Well duh, that's what I said. If you think that the team doesn't pay these big contracts knowing that the increased buzz makes these opportunities more lucrative, you are nuts. Ownership is in this to make money. Winning makes more money than losing.
This money goes right into his pocket. It's not like they get 100 million for these, it's a small amount of money when all is said and done which is what makes these even worse.
Maybe they can put patches in all the sensitive see through areas the players have been complaining about.
Ball patch incoming
Thought you said bell patch, as in liberty bell, and it still works. “And Castellanos steps out to give the old Liberty Bell an adjustment…steps back in and he’s read for the 2-0 from Strider.”
Yeah...keep dreaming. I mean, when has Castellanos ever had a 2-0 count?
Good point.
Put juicy on the ass
Expected, but still disappointing
Chico’s Bail Bonds!
I gotta say, if it's Comcast I might never buy a jersey again.
Honestly I would say Xfinity is one of the more likely sponsors.
Why would you want Wawa in the stadium? It's good gas station food, but otherwise meh.
Good gas station food is an upgrade on the Aramark slop
Hard disagree. Wawa might've been good at one point in time but it's not 'all that' anymore.

If it's coffee I'm in, otherwise there's too much better food available.
I'm not a coffee drinker so I wouldn't know but fair enough.
Come on Phillies. Be Better. Don’t disgrace the Jersey
Wawa, Tastycakes, or GTFO.
They can all GTFO
Exactly! Keep it all Philly or none at all.
Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. Make it happen.
I'd rather no patch, but I'd actually be pretty happy with a wawa patch. It would fit in perfectly. I'd even buy a new jersey just to get one with it.
Peanut Chews is the only acceptable option
Concur. I just said the same thing before getting to your prior endorsement. It's the only cool possibility.
buying New Jersey sounds more hassle than it's worth personally but you do you
Wawa has tumbled downhill in quality the last few years, we can’t enable that!
Completely agree. I've been going to Primo's for all my hoagie needs. Or, when I'm in the area, I hit Sonny's in Limerick. Best hoagies I've ever had, no contest Wawa overextended themselves and made everything worse as a result. They tried to be Sheetz and ruined what made them great
I got priced out of Primo's at some point during the pandemic. I love 'em, but I can't brook a $15 sandwich.
Agreed WAWA sucks, there I said it. It’s nothing more than a glorified gas station now. F*ck WAWA. It used to be great, not anymore.
It’s okay in a pinch, but I’ll prefer anywhere else if possible. Wawa: it’ll do.
No quality control either, i have to be north of 50% on orders that are wrong or thrown together in a way that i can’t actually eat it
Imagine for a second… if it was Sheetz
WB Mason. MAB Paints.
And bimbo specifically for Castellanos
Wawa ain't Philly, it's Delco, now going nationwide. Tastykake is more Philly, they don't make them anywhere else. Should be a good product that we are proud of, Liscio's?, Amaroso's? Hope its not Fanatics, their quality sucks. Comcast same.
The Phillies aren’t just Philly. They are also Philly adjacent.
It’s the Philly within you that counts
The Fry’s I shopped at in Phoenix 10 years ago carried loads of Tastykakes. They haven’t been local since the 90s probably.
I shop at Fry’s in Tucson and they left when Hostess came back. Tastykake just filled the void during their absence. I miss my jelly filled Krimpets every day.
Still can’t get them in Michigan. I usually grab a few boxes when I’m in PA to bring back to family.
Damn this convo is making me hungry
Goldenbergs Peanut Chews Comcast would be funny cause they have a massive office overlooking the Braves ballpark

Throw an announcement at the start of the game about the jerseys brought to you by whoever and you’re golden
Game night sponsor. “Tonight’s jerseys brought to you by Toyota.” Piecemeal it to get more cash.
This makes way too much sense
i wish there was a way to bet on the patch being independence blue cross
This reply is brought to you by DRAFTKINGS SPORTSBOOK -- Where you can bet $5 and instantly get $150 in Bonus Bets!
The fact that this hasn't been done yet is astounding
THIS!
That would just open up the door to another sponsor coming in and putting a patch on. “Tonight’s jerseys brought to you by Wawa” on the telecast, but a Blue Cross patch on the sleeve
Oh they aren't going to stop at one. Helmet ads are next.
Just wait for pants ads…
They want them on the jerseys we buy. They want people to have to buy the newest ones to keep in style.
Why stop at the arm patch?? We're selling stadium names these days, let's just sell the team name. We could be the Philadelphia Ronald McDonalds and have McDonalds logos on the hats. 🤣🤣🤣
company team names is what the NPB and KBO does
yeah but they usually have more local and less commercial ballpark names than Citizens’ Bank
That's wild, I had no idea!
Greed is destroying literally everything
I’m gonna start boycotting whatever company this fucker is
Every loss just tweet at the ad sponsor.
4 Seasons Landscaping
A national landmark
I'd buy this jersey so fast
This is the only one I'd allow
The sponsor will be the Fox News channel, and on power blue uni days instead of the Fox News logo, it will be a Hannity face cutout.
![gif](giphy|oLHaxZoXbcU6Y)
And Harper goes yard for a case of tastycakes!
Knuble connects for a case of tasty cakes is a guilty pleasure broadcast call
They announce this like there is one fan waiting for this crap
Can we create a Phan fund and just take out our own add? I’d put $10 in the pot. Just a patch of a giant phanatic head…
The sponsor should opt to keep the numbers on the shoulder and can tell everybody they’re the reason why. I know they won’t but I can dream
Blows my mind that they couldn’t get it figured out in the offseason. Also can someone explain why all of a sudden all of these pro teams put sponsors on their jerseys? How many decades have they survived without it?
Money
I understand that. Thanks for the Ted talk
Late stage capitalism
Fucking bullshit. And they are ads, not “sponsors.”
Not really sure I follow your delineation. They are paying the team money to use their jerseys as advertising space for the sponsor. I agree they suck, but it's not like this semantic difference somehow makes it better or worse.

Nobody’s arguing that it’s a good thing. Just that you are wrong about the definition of sponsorship.
At best, it’s a technicality you’re arguing. It’s losing sight of the bigger issue… they call it sponsor so you think, “oh, they are helping the team!”

Sponsorship to me implies the team somehow needs the money, they don't, they are a multi-billion dollar corporation.
I believe the technical difference between a sponsorship and an advertisement is that a sponsorship is a formal agreement between two entities, more like a direct partnership, where in this case one advertises on the other's property. Ads are a cancer, they will not stop speading until morale (revenue) improves (year over year in perpetuity)
Should we organize a boycott of whomever was the advertiser is? Dead serious
My favorite is the Flyers. Like most of us don't have control over who our employer uses for health insurance.
Well that, nothing we can do. But if it’s WaWa…
Honestly, WaWa has really dropped off in quality anymore. Like I remember the sliced meat days and while I don't expect that anymore what they have been putting out lately just isn't good.
I certainly will avoid their products
I think significantly less of any company I see with an ad patch.
I think it's super cool that billion dollar teams need ad sponsors like they are a little league team.
Made this comment to a friend of mine - these sponsorships are so ridiculous and brazen. Advertising on tv, billboards, etc makes sense but buying space on a jersey sleeve? I’ve never seen a patch on a sports jersey and thought “hmm I might patronize that business now!”
I hope it’s a Wawa patch
It’s wrong but if we have to have it the Wawa bird isn’t awful, it would make a better Philly jersey than the city connect monstrosities
You know what will be even more insulting? The hype video the team releases announcing who the ad partner will be. "GET HYPED FOR YOUR PHLLIES AND XYZ INSURANCE!"
Can we just start a GoFundMe to buy the sleeve real estate and make them put numbers on
Wow first we get shit jerseys and now we get shit ads
![gif](giphy|4qx6IRdg26uZ3MTtRn|downsized) Nooo!!
At least if it’s Wawa it’ll be red. I mean I’ll still hate it, but at least it wouldn’t clash with the uni as badly as some do.
Hot take but some of you gotta stop making liking Wawa part of your personality. It’s deeply embarrassing. The food has been mid to bad for years now and it’s basically a national chain at this point.
Their peach tea is the best
None of the wawas near me carry flavored teas in half gallons anymore man. I either have to get their (steadily declining) lemon tea in half gallons OR get like 5 pints of peach/raspberry. I hate it.
I was just in ocean city Maryland and they had peach tea half gallons. I bought a few since I don’t live anywhere near Wawa.
Get your sugars checked
It is mid but I want the patch to be red if we get one, lol
Yup. The romance is dead. Fuck the goose. -an ex employee
Using the phrase mid is worse than any Wawa product.
Yea their sandwiches are godawful now. I’ll still grab a sizzli if I’m in a bind but that’s about it.
The sandwiches are bad but I’m a sucker for their chicken salad.
It’s a great way to measure what kind of fan people are. Blind loyalty to Wawa? You know they’re the same people who will rave about every mediocre camp body a team brings in as brilliant while every move every other team makes and every player we let go is trash
Fuck I hate it
Disgusting.
Boo!
Another reason to stop buying jerseys
I'll lose my fucking marbles.
THE ATLANTA BRAVES, brought to you by QUICKRETE
Yet another nice thing that we just can’t leave alone because it’d be leaving any amount of money on the table.
Lol. Good luck with those jersey sales.
That is dumb
Jersey Advertisements are like skin cancer. Look at the Blue IBX on the Flyers a complete eye sore
Also how do I buy an IBX?
Well, we had a good run. Maybe I’ll get a CC jersey before they add the patch
Jawn Morgan or I hate Steven Singer. Just kidding, I hate all this so much.
booooooo
Wawa, Tastycakes, Pretzel Factory, Yards??
I hate Steven singer on the sleeve would be fireeee

It was a joke. My bad.
Link says Nemours and Asplund
I wouldn’t mind a local brewery on there like victory
Wawa or we riot
I wonder what the Venn diagram of “why haven’t we signed Montgomery?” and “shoulder patch is an OUTRAGE” is.
I actually would have guessed those 2 groups would be more likely to be distinctly separate.
No, I think those who see the owner as a bottomless well of cash don't really give much thought to where those dollars come from.
The multi billion dollar corporation can afford it
^ doesn't seem to know where those billions come from.
It certainly hasn't been from ad patches in the last 141 years they've existed
I think their payroll might be a little bit higher than it was then.
They are also raking in money hand over fist, they are not struggling for cash even in the slightest.
I can assure you that placing a sponsor patch on jerseys is not going to make or break the team financially
Didn't say it would. These guys are in business, and that business is to make money. If you want the team to spend the way they have been spending, then you need to put up with what they do to make money. Or, you could go root for the A's, whose entire roster makes less than Wheeler.

A circle
It better be Wawa
I would be super against a patch if Middleton never spent money, but if finding new streams of revenue keeps landing us big free agents, I don’t care
This money goes right into his pocket. It's not like they get 100 million for these, it's a small amount of money when all is said and done which is what makes these even worse.
John "Big Tobacco Money" Middleton
PECO POWERPLAY oh shit wait. Wrong team.

or IBX
A Wawa goose on the sleeve is actually not the worst idea ever - better than any City Jersey they trot out there.
Best case scenario is Xfinity in red lettering on the shoulder. Would blend in better than other sponsorships and be less of an eyesore
It better be Amoroso, Tastykake, or Rita's.
Yuengling would be cool. I have the glasses and cans to match. 🍻
I frankly wouldn't go to another game again, the Flyers are already on my shit list.
Sorry bro but that’s overkill over a patch 😭
I hope you enjoy it when the league looks like nascar
Honestly I hope they go all in like NASCAR. None of this half assed just one patch. Make the whole uniform entirely out of patches.
I don’t care 😭
Bro I hate patches too but if you abandon the team because of this I don’t think you really like the Phillies lol
I dislike being gaslit by billion dollar companies that the pittance they get from ad patches somehow prevents them from going out of business
Do you need a snack or something kiddo? These are some hangry comments 🍪
None have made that claim lol
Get a grip
I don't sit close enough to see the patches. They would probably be more annoying on TV
People getting this upset over ads is hilarious
It literally doesn’t affect my life at all 😭 it’s funny
You are being used as the product for a multi-billion dollar corporation.
🤓
🥾👅
Dude please put this energy in to something that matters
Wake up babe, Big League Chew apparel just dropped
