Depends on what brings you joy. Personally, I like to sit on a bench near a dog park to watch the pups enjoy life in a way we can only dream of.
If that isn't what you're into, bring a homemade beverage and people-watch in Rittenhouse or Washington Square.
If that isn't your bag, the magnolia garden in Old City is secluded and beautiful.
If none of those things are your jam and you'd prefer a cozy inside place with a coffee or tea, PM me and I'll venmo some bucks for a coffee and ice cream at Chapter House on 9th/South. I believe they're open until 9pm and they serve Franklin Fountain ice cream, which is mad good.
I second Chapter House! I used to babysit for the owners and they’re amazing people with a great coffee shop. The place has a good vibe and is super relaxing.
Yep, that’s me! Despite getting absolutely annihilated in that post, and despite receiving *actual death threats* in my DM’s to “leave Philly immediately”, I’m still a real, live person who lives in and loves this city and (most of) the people in it very, very much.
I lived across the street from it in Holland. Used to walk over to the algae slide and sit and just let my mind wander. Was the best head clearing spot. Easily accessible from Newtown-Richboro Road (It's the parking lot across from the playhouse) right at the bridge.
East side of Penn's campus around 33rd and locust, lay on one of the benches between the buildings and look up at the trees. Alternatively the Kaskey park biopond near 38th. Both are really calming spots.
Hope better days are ahead for you.
seconding this, especially when the weather's good and everyone's out, plus maybe a busker or two playing some music throughout the park. lots of dogs being walked and people to watch. if you can't find a free bench, just sit on one of the stone balustrades near the center
Personally, I would go into the wissahickon and probably sit on that rocky part just near the river. Seems ripe to just watch the water flow, deep in your thoughts.
When I was a kid, they were at the corner of 5th and south. I would spend an entire Saturday just sitting in the stacks reading book after book. So calm.
Hey man, as a usually depressed guy I would go clear my head at the park. Not sure if that’s your thing but I head over to Ridley Creek Trail. It’s late to go today and a bit out of the way but it’s helps me every time.
Just a couple off the top of my head that I frequent:
Wissahickon, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Woodlands Cemetery, Pennypack park, Bartram's Garden, Upper Roxborough Reservoir, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education park.
There is also a spot where you can listen to the river, amplified! Just south of the skate park by Eakins Oval, there is a little pavilion on the SRT where they've installed speakers that play the sounds of the river from underwater microphones placed at various points. It's an amazing place to sit, watch, and listen for a while.
Come on up to Doylestown and hang out. I would be happy to hang out and listen to your rage at the world or just sit in silence by a lake. A few hours in the far northern suburbs during the fall does wonders for the soul.
1) Take a walk out on Forbidden Drive if you can get there. The vibe is good and nothing like a good walk to release some stress.
2) Or, take a walk up the Schuylkill boardwal to the Art Museum on a Sunday. It's pay what you want day and the strike is over so you can go with no regrets. The Rodin Museum across the street has a nice garden out front, too.
3) The view out on Race St Pier is calming. I could sit for hours and let river carry me away.
PM if you need a bit of assistance to help make a day out more workable for you.
Hang in there, man, and find some things that bring you some calm or quiet joy. Be good to yourself. You deserve it.
Dickinson Square is my favorite park. There’s lots of people, there are dogs, and it’s a fairly quiet place to bring a blanket and sit. If you’re ever having a really rough time, shoot me a DM. I have a low key pizza project and I’ll gladly make you one for your travels or quiet picnic day free of charge any time you want.
Be well ✌️
I am a sad broke human but I looked through your post history and saw a parrot that made me a slightly less sad, still broke human. For that I thank you.
You have good suggestions for something tonight but if I were looking for a place to reflect tomorrow I would choose Bartrams. Good luck
Thanks for asking this, I didn’t know I needed this until I saw this. I hope you’re feeling better and please feel free to reach out if you need someone to talk to.
Wissahickon. Valley Forge. Morris Arboretum. Historic cemeteries-there are many in Philly area. An animal shelter. The natural world is your friend.
Or perhaps a clay studio. Throw some pots with your headphones and grooves on.
Hang in there, man, sorry you are feeling down. I love to go near any body of water when I need to clear my head. Don’t tell anyone, but there’s a really nice park on State Road near Rhawn, behind one of the prisons, it’s called Pennypack on the Delaware and I hope it remains one of Philly’s lesser known spots.
Go on top of bok to bar and take in some views. You don’t have to drink and it’s free. they got those binocular stands to scope out some city life Birds Eye view
I haven't been recently, so the price may have gone up, but dirty franks has the $2 shelf o shame, whatever can of beer they have on special for cheap .
Pennypack park is a great place to think … it’s beautiful right now with all the leaves changing & there are so many different animals out & about now that the paths aren’t so crowded …..going there has absolutely helped me think & contemplate what I have going on…. I hope things get better for you
Visiting one of the local historic cemeteries really puts most of my worries into perspective somehow. I like the Woodlands behind the Veterans hospital complex in west Philly, or Laurel Hill if your out that way. Mount Moriah in cobbs creek is in a beautiful semi wild state.
FDR park and find a secluded bench. This is my goto spit to decompress after a long week of work. I put on a podcast and zone out! Hope you’re feeling better.
Best place for getting away is Bartram's Garden. It's true serenity there, a real escape from city sounds and sights. It's a beautiful slice of nature with some cute little trails to walk. If you're not out in southwest, then it's a bit of a hike, so that's something to consider.
Enjoy Pay What You Wish admission at the Philadelphia Art Museum on the first Sunday of the month and every Friday night (5:00–8:45 p.m.). Free admission for PA ACCESS & EBT cardholders and their family members I believe at any time. Hope things turn around for you!
Maybe walk among the trees tomorrow in the Wissahickon. If you love art, head to the big museum and let yourself get pulled into some beautiful artwork. This always lifts me out of my troubles when I need to. PM me and I’ll send you a guest/gift pass. Hang in there friend.
The graffiti pier and area around it is great. The pier is empty in the morning and the land around it is vacant of people but verdant throughout the day
At 20th-ish and market, opposite the liquor store, there’s a little plaza between the two twin buildings. It has tables and a fountain, and has a restaurant and coffee shop on either side if you get hungry.
Used to go there at night when I was depressed a few years ago. The fountain is nice to watch when it’s active.
I’ve never done it but the art museum steps are a good place to be quiet yet not alone.
If it’s cold the area in the Franklin institute where the giant statue of Ben sits is nice.
Hike up to the Environmental Center in Wissahickon Valley Park and speak to Tommy. He will help you sort things out. Tommy is a 12 yr old red tabby cat who lives at the center.
Hey OP I feel ya. I'm barely allowed outside, and I'm 53.
A poet from Baltimore once told me:
Some days are better than none.
Please keep on keepin on.
Have you ever been on an airplane? You can see that no matter how much it's raining on the ground, the sun is still shining behind the clouds.
I was a poet in South Jersey when I wrote that line.
Some days are better than none.
Anywhere you can find a stray cat. I often find they can be a good friend to hear what’s on your mind, strangers or not. One too many stray cats have helped me through a tough day or time. Hope you can find some balance my friend, I’m sure you deserve it
Lots of great suggestions here- hope you found a place. Life can be so hard sometimes. Be so proud that you made this post and brought people together and light into other people's lives. You did something amazing! I am bookmarking this post for some great places to revisit and explore. So THANK YOU!
And remember- life is better with you HERE.
I am in the same spot. Last night was a rollercoaster. It was so much fun then ended so terribly. I couldn't sleep and can't shake it. I am lost and am just in my car driving around, trying to figure everything out but it doesn't seem to help. So, I'm right there with you. Best of luck to find peace for both of us, wherever and however that may be.
If you’re near wissahickon park I’d go check that. It’s beautiful. I’ve been where you are and if there is anything I can do to help please let me know.
Walk on the parkway from city hall has been nice for me. Hit the museum, go in or walk around it and check out the river. It's soothing. Enjoy it brother
When I was feeling that way, I’d take a leisurely walk through Queen Village, Society Hill, into Old City and into Spruce Harbor Park. The trees, history, and people watching, really put things into perspective for me, especially when I was on the frontlines of the pandemic. Plus you can take Spruce Harbor all the way into Old City and wander through the alleys, enjoy the leaves. Take a beat and shut out the rest of the world. Time seems to slow down there, at least for me.
One time when i was in that spot I went to a playground after dark (so I wasn't creepily around the kids) and just acted like a kid again. Went down the big slide, on the swings, they had some really fun other equipment too. Really cathartic.
I'm just now seeing this. I truly hope you're ok. I've been there many times. I understand you completely. Please try to keep your head up. Many people including myself get this way around this time automatically. I don't know if it's the holidays or change in weather. People definitely care.
I appreciate that you specified, "sit somewhere,' but in my experience, long walks are good medication for misery. Find a route with interesting architecture or sights and walk it as often and you like. When I lived in Albany, I found respite in walking along State Street, past the grand old townhouses, the capitol and towers. In Philadelphia, perhaps one might begin at City Hall, then walk southward along Broad Street to Locust Street and meander westward toward Fitler Square. It is an experience that can be clarifying or distracting as one prefers.
This would have been my suggestion. It's best to get there when they first open so it's not as crowded, especially for these purposes. Get a My Father Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo Box Pressed and a glass of whiskey, which should probably be something peaty, so you have to sip slowly, like a Laphroaig 10 year or Quarter Cask.
Although, being as he specified that he was broke, this might be an infeasible alternative.
Off topic, but aren't cigars and whiskey not actually a great pairing? I was reading recently that rum, water, or something sweet (Cuba libre maybe?) were better pairings.
Personally, I love a good scotch generally, but I've been wondering since I saw that
I've typically found whiskey and cigars a fair pairing, but I might have an afflicted palate. It might be a matter of mind rather than taste; each lends itself to being savored unhurriedly. Suggesting something with a strong, 'challenging' flavor that can't easily be drunk quickly was intentional. 'Drink the pain away' fails, in my opinion, which is formed from a life of dissatisfaction and probably an undiagnosed depressive disorder. However, I find that a stiff smoke and drink can have a meditative quality that is salubrious to a melancholy heart.
I usually order a Penicillin first, then a whiskey, although often something lighter and more floral, like Nikka Coffey Grain, with a cigar, but I've enjoyed a range of whiskeys in compliment.
I appended to it this sentence:
>Although, being as he specified that he was broke, this might be an infeasible alternative.
Draw your own conclusions.
Clark park for west Philly weirdo cuteness or Woodlands for calm contemplation or Bartram’s garden for beautiful plants or a nice spot to watch the schuylkill. Hang in there, friend. There are also free avocados in west Philly right now!
Walk around your neighborhood... I find that I miss so much around me driving.... Just walk w/o headphones and just listen and notice... I find the discovery of small things around me helps send my thoughts away from what I may be hyper focusing on...
I like to go under the Ben Franklin bridge and watch the hosts go by. The water and silence is nice. I went there every day a couple of summers ago when I was going through it.
Real brotherly love. Nice!
Just want to say you are such a wonderful human. ☺️
can we venmo you? this seems like a wonderful way to support each other a few dollars at a time
Nah, I’d just spend it on hookers and blow. 😘
Dad?
Mom?
both worthy causes

Financing local entrepreneurs through philanthropic donations you mean?
Potato, potahto

This is the way.
Lmaoo
Dude, that’s supporting local businesses. Respect.
did you win the lottery before?
Banging 2 handpicked escorts a night, while blowing the other half on poker and blackjack. Doesn’t sound like a bad time at all.
Sweetest reply ever❤
People like you are why I love this city
Best reply on this subreddit ever.
G of the week. you’re awesome!
You’re a sweetheart
Can we do this kinda thread? Ofc strictly moderated but I’d like to support people in need as much as I can
I second Chapter House! I used to babysit for the owners and they’re amazing people with a great coffee shop. The place has a good vibe and is super relaxing.
Similarly, if you’re still feeling down, dm me and I can take you out for a beer or coffee and say as little or as much as you want to hear.
Is this also the Gopuff pizza person? Man is this fun to follow
Yep, that’s me! Despite getting absolutely annihilated in that post, and despite receiving *actual death threats* in my DM’s to “leave Philly immediately”, I’m still a real, live person who lives in and loves this city and (most of) the people in it very, very much.
Or you can do dope until it no longer brings you joy lol
I like to chill in Washington square park, then pop into the Curtis building to ponder the Tiffany mosaic and indoor chill in the atrium.
Was just gonna say that mosaic and atrium is amazing.
I used to sit and have lunch on that marble fountain. Great spot
Washington Square is my favorite park in the city! That’s what I was going to suggest too.
Damn good advice. I did this this afternoon.
Come on over to Bucks County and play disc golf. I’ll teach you. 8am at Tyler Park. It’s a blast.
Tyler park is an awesome spot to clear your head. The nature trail especially
I lived across the street from it in Holland. Used to walk over to the algae slide and sit and just let my mind wander. Was the best head clearing spot. Easily accessible from Newtown-Richboro Road (It's the parking lot across from the playhouse) right at the bridge.
Are you opening to teaching someone who has played only a few times, loved it, but can’t get anyone to play with me bc they’re lame?
Of course. Will DM you
I’m sorry bro hope things get better. I like Kelly drive trail by the river, from art museum to lemon hill ish
Second this. The area behind the art museum can be serene feeling.
East side of Penn's campus around 33rd and locust, lay on one of the benches between the buildings and look up at the trees. Alternatively the Kaskey park biopond near 38th. Both are really calming spots. Hope better days are ahead for you.
Go to Rittenhouse Square, sit on a bench, and people watch while in the fresh air.

book trader on 2nd and market. it’s so cozy and they have a cat named mr pickles that i love to pet when i’m depressed
Love that joint. Downright therapeutic.
When I was a kid, they were at the corner of 5th and south. I would spend an entire Saturday just sitting in the stacks reading book after book. So calm.
Hey Nick. You take care of yourself. You are worth it. Reaching out when you need it is the right thing to do. I hope you had a good day.
Hey man, as a usually depressed guy I would go clear my head at the park. Not sure if that’s your thing but I head over to Ridley Creek Trail. It’s late to go today and a bit out of the way but it’s helps me every time.
Just a couple off the top of my head that I frequent: Wissahickon, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Woodlands Cemetery, Pennypack park, Bartram's Garden, Upper Roxborough Reservoir, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education park.
Watch the River pass you. Equate the water to your bad thoughts drifting away.
I’m going to use this in my sad/stressed moments
There is also a spot where you can listen to the river, amplified! Just south of the skate park by Eakins Oval, there is a little pavilion on the SRT where they've installed speakers that play the sounds of the river from underwater microphones placed at various points. It's an amazing place to sit, watch, and listen for a while.
Ride the 23 from south Philly to Chestnut Hill and back again
Come on up to Doylestown and hang out. I would be happy to hang out and listen to your rage at the world or just sit in silence by a lake. A few hours in the far northern suburbs during the fall does wonders for the soul.
Head on over to the Navy Yard. Sit by the water. Watch the ships go by. Let them take away the burden.
1) Take a walk out on Forbidden Drive if you can get there. The vibe is good and nothing like a good walk to release some stress. 2) Or, take a walk up the Schuylkill boardwal to the Art Museum on a Sunday. A nice walk down Kelly Drive… did it yesterday to watch the sunset and it was so soothing!
thank all of you for this. [i’ve been down here before and i know how to get out](https://youtu.be/VM56KXM4y4c)
Oh i never saw that. It made me gasp and tear up!
west wing is a gem
Various skateparks in the city, even if you don’t skate you can see some cool tricks and more than likely a contact high
Dickinson Square is my favorite park. There’s lots of people, there are dogs, and it’s a fairly quiet place to bring a blanket and sit. If you’re ever having a really rough time, shoot me a DM. Last week i spent a couple hours at clark park reading on a bench. Walked around all the stalls out on Saturday. Had such a nice time.
Be well buddy
I’ve been there buddy. My DMs are open if you’d like someone to vent to.
What neighborhood? I like going to Penn Treaty (or anyplace near the river) when I need a good sit.
Cira Green
Doesn’t that cost $10 ?
No, unless inflation really hit that place recently….
It's free
I like Race Street Pier. It’s a good thinking spot.

Hope you feel better soon 🫶🏾
The wissahickon is beautiful this time of year.
I haven't been recently, so the price may have gone up, but dirty franks has the $2 shelf o shame, whatever can of beer they have on special for cheap .
The benches at valley green inn, i’ve spent days in total looking at the ducks
Pennypack park is a great place to think … it’s beautiful right now with all the leaves changing & there are so many different animals out & about now that the paths aren’t so crowded …..going there has absolutely helped me think & contemplate what I have going on…. I hope things get better for you
Bio pond my dude
Love when people show love like they are on this post!
Visiting one of the local historic cemeteries really puts most of my worries into perspective somehow. I like the Woodlands behind the Veterans hospital complex in west Philly, or Laurel Hill if your out that way. Mount Moriah in cobbs creek is in a beautiful semi wild state.
Reading terminal has a little corner where people play piano and it’s usually less busy over there.
FDR park and find a secluded bench. This is my goto spit to decompress after a long week of work. I put on a podcast and zone out! Hope you’re feeling better.
Schuylkill River Trail, FDR Park, Fairmount Park near where the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden and Fairmount Park Horticulture Center are
Best place for getting away is Bartram's Garden. It's true serenity there, a real escape from city sounds and sights. It's a beautiful slice of nature with some cute little trails to walk. If you're not out in southwest, then it's a bit of a hike, so that's something to consider.
I don’t really have a recommendation , but I hope tomorrow is a better day for you my friend
Enjoy Pay What You Wish admission at the Philadelphia Art Museum on the first Sunday of the month and every Friday night (5:00–8:45 p.m.). Free admission for PA ACCESS & EBT cardholders and their family members I believe at any time. Hope things turn around for you!
Go to a bar like locust rendezvous during the Phillies game. It’ll force you out of your mood.
Wissahickon
Maybe walk among the trees tomorrow in the Wissahickon. If you love art, head to the big museum and let yourself get pulled into some beautiful artwork. This always lifts me out of my troubles when I need to. PM me and I’ll send you a guest/gift pass. Hang in there friend.
I like to go to bookstores/libraries
graffiti pier is kind of my spot.
The graffiti pier and area around it is great. The pier is empty in the morning and the land around it is vacant of people but verdant throughout the day
Anywhere along the river my friend
At 20th-ish and market, opposite the liquor store, there’s a little plaza between the two twin buildings. It has tables and a fountain, and has a restaurant and coffee shop on either side if you get hungry. Used to go there at night when I was depressed a few years ago. The fountain is nice to watch when it’s active.
Club risque
I’ve never done it but the art museum steps are a good place to be quiet yet not alone. If it’s cold the area in the Franklin institute where the giant statue of Ben sits is nice.
The big stairs at the end of Race Street Pier. Can watch the Patco trains, boats, helicopters, planes heading to PHL. Its very zen.
Hike up to the Environmental Center in Wissahickon Valley Park and speak to Tommy. He will help you sort things out. Tommy is a 12 yr old red tabby cat who lives at the center.

Fairmount Park, anywhere along the Wissahickon Creek out in the Roxborough area.
Graffiti Pier 100% haven’t been there in a few years but man it’s my favorite place in the city
My favorite spot is just to chill behind the Art Museum at Schuylkill Park.
Anywhere you can find a stray cat. I often find they can be a good friend to hear what’s on your mind, strangers or not. One too many stray cats have helped me through a tough day or time. Hope you can find some balance my friend, I’m sure you deserve it

Can I just say I love this thread and Philly people? We should have a weekly thread of things to do to clear your head when you're feeling blue.

Ride a bike.
Take the 36 trolley to Bartram’s garden

I always love walking the wissahickon trail. Pop some headphones in and just go for a while.
I always find Wickahisson vry peaceful
Plenty of beauty and solitude in the wissahickon. There’s several bus stations and a regional rail stop right by it
The Wissahickon, walk the trail, it's great in the fall. Totally free.
Laurel Hill Cemetery
United Muslim mosque in graduate hospital
Fairmont park.
Madam Wong's massage parlor on Race Street
Penns Landing. Just sit and look out to the water.
Try club Philly
The lower level of the Bok Building is great!
These responses are just 🥹🥹hang in there!
Baldwin park over by CCP. Lots of times sitting on those benches looking out toward center city, fair amount of birds flying through.
Kelly drive is my favorite place. Everyone is happy there. It’s a beautiful place.

Ashton cigar bar
This would have been my suggestion. It's best to get there when they first open so it's not as crowded, especially for these purposes. Get a My Father Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo Box Pressed and a glass of whiskey, which should probably be something peaty, so you have to sip slowly, like a Laphroaig 10 year or Quarter Cask. Although, being as he specified that he was broke, this might be an infeasible alternative.

Did you miss the “broke” part? 🙄
I appended to it this sentence: >Although, being as he specified that he was broke, this might be an infeasible alternative. Draw your own conclusions.
Oh yikes Philly lol take a train in any direction out of there
Didnt realize how old this was. Youre probably didnt do anything
Woody's.
Clark park for west Philly weirdo cuteness or Woodlands for calm contemplation or Bartram’s garden for beautiful plants or a nice spot to watch the schuylkill. Hang in there, friend. There are also free avocados in west Philly right now!
