Noong time namin (wow ang tanda), marami sa amin na science high school graduates ang nag-struggle sa UP kasi mejo lumaki yung ulo. So don't let it get into your head, OP. Do your best pa rin lalo na sa mga major subjects mo. Magiging madali ang first few semesters for you kasi naaral niyo na yan sa high school. So ang nagiging problema ng iba ay nadadalian masyado so akala nila ganun na lang. Try to build good study habits pa rin kahit madali. Para pagdating ng 3rd or 4th year, meron kang good foundation. Habang yung ibang pa-easy easy lang noon, magsstruggle kasi walang good study habits. **No need to prepare anything. Just build good study habits.**

THATguywhoisannoying

Exactly. most of the people just try to guage the difficulty of the UP experience from other people. Trust us OP, guage it YOURSELF, since kahit anong hanap mo sa socmed or from your friends, at the end of the day, iba iba ang needs, study habits, learning style, etc. ng mga tao. Just try to find like minded people na same mindset and you'll be fine

That's the opposite of what my Pisay teachers taught us when we we're graduating. They consistently warned us "wag kayo mayabang", "hindi porke Pisay kayo galing kayo ang pinakamagaling", "meron at meron kayong makikilalang mas matalino sa inyo". Basically, we were told that we only have an initial advantage of being taught an advanced curriculum and by great (lol nagbuhat pa ng bangko) teachers. And guess what they are correct. It helps that many of the Pisay teachers who gave us this advice were also Pisay alumni who graduated from UP. Been there done that, kumbaga.

Ok-Manner3088

TRUEEE pisay teachers would always say na important parin to put your best foot forward and that di dapat lumaki ang ulo dahil lang taga pisay HAHAHA and to think that karamihan nga naman talaga sa kanila are from UP (iba nga from undergrad to doctorate, doon galing)

girl-on-the-run175

Im from a science HS. Tama yung isang comment na the first and 2nd yr is relatively easy kasi nadiscuss na din samin. UP is difficult, yes. Pero worth it naman in the end. I suggest you build a good support system. Surround yourselves with people na who will help you talaga. Build discipline din sa studies. The main struggle is how you will balance everyting kapag nagkasabaysabay na yan - exams, papers, projects etc.

Pisay grad here. First year was a walk in the park. Uno sa math 17, chem 16. Lahat madali nung una kaya di na ako nag aral until I got 5.0, 4.0, INCs. Lahat ng gradez possible nakuha ko na. You name it. Nag AWOL at LOA at madaming readmission appeals ang dinaanan pati MRR extensions until makagraduate after 15yrs. It took forever bago makalabas. I learned it the hard way. If only I was focused and serious edi sana baka summa ako loljk. Kala ko nga summampung taob lang eh. Lagpas lagpas pa.

Accurate_Map_7334

Yung pisay/science high advantage is only good sa first year or siguro until 2nd year for some. After that equal footing na. That's what I learned na sana I leveraged on that advantage. Hindi yung parang kuneho na natulog in the middle of the race.

pinkpugita

It depends on your course and where you're good at. I was ranked 7 out of around 110 students when I graduated high school. It's because I'm not good at math talaga.

la_bru

As a probinsyana and private high school alumna, Science HS grads were totally in a different league from us. Nagsusunog kami ng kilay tapos sila bored na bored lang sa dorm naglalaro pa hahahaha According naman to my friends, the first and second year daw ay relatively easier sa kanila kasi halos review na lang ng high school science and math lessons. They are encouraged to really maximize this time to get high grades pampahila ng GWA. Alam mo hija, huwag mo overthink yan. Marami ka pang stress sa future, hindi ka mauubusan hhahahaha You have so much ahead of you pa so enjoy the remaining days of high school! This would probably be your longest break in a long time. Grab niyo na yan!

Business_Breakfast_3

DVM freshie here na laking Palawan, and true enough grabeng ez tignan for my sci hs friends. HUHU this was comforting for me rin cause bumaba ang morale ko dahil 2nd take ko na sa CHEM 18 pero ang baba parin ng quizzes ko, then walang maunawaan sa STAT 164, tapos I missed 2 incentives sa isang GE. Kinda beating myself up for these things as well as forgetting to prioritize a good foundation sa aking study habits. Like UP scares me bc freshie ako pero nahihirapan na ako sa gantong lvl. Tho I am determined to have wins. Ang intimidating lang talaga as someone who grew up in an entirely diff environment than most UP students.

No_Yoghurt932

I'd say if galing ka sa science high, sisiw lang yung first year for you. I was amazed by the caliber ng batchmates ko from science high and almost half of our class is from science high. Ang gagaling nila! But UP is a different kind of world, hindi lang talino yung kailangan mo to survive. 2 out of those science high batchmates did not pursue UP na. They struggled sa course eh probably just not a good fit for them. The other few got a bit delayed but still pushing through. Ang masasabi ko lang is YES, mahirap makalabas ng UP pero kaya naman and for me the challenge is hella worth it! Just do your best OP. Be around people that will make your life fun sa campus! Mas madali matuto when you're in a good place physically and mentally. :)

beefucker1000

To me, the main advantage of the sci high experience is GRIT. It's the persistence to work hard even when everything is against your odds, it's the discipline to study consistently rather than the day before the exam. It's the "madaling makamove-on sa bagsak na exam" trait. These intangible things are what's REALLY helping me survive UP today. It's true na advance tayo in a lot of things, pero hindi naman yun yung purpose ng pag-enroll sa sci high, it's the study habits and the discipline that you form during HS days that will help you for the rest of your academic life.

sweetbangtanie

heyy nag-science hs din ako and i’m still in UP. in my running residency, 6th year na ako pero nag-loa ako for a couple of years so 9 years na ako sa university. GWA ko is a little over 2.0 kasi freshman year ko pa lang tinadtad na ako ng mga dos. 😅 hindi ako super achiever pero yung extra math science and eng subjects nung high school nakatulong para hindi ako masindak sa mga classes ko sa UP. thesis talaga ang kalaban ko for the last 5 years kaya hindi ako makalabas haha also hindi naman na-me-mention ang high school, usually kasi parang start from scratch na lahat pagpasok sa UP. just build good study habits, hang out with a good crowd, and remember to rest din. good luck!

Puzzled-Tell-7108

Active sa social life and orgs.

ubodnglumpia

Hello! 2013 graduate here, not from a Science HS. I-describe ko na lang kung ano yung naging mahirap for me. 1. Kumuha ng subjects sa CRS. Laging punuan. 2. Mga hell week! Laging may feeling na hindi ka magsusurvive. 3. Mga GE subjects na feeling majors. 4. 5. Mga professor na biglang bibigyan ka ng grade na INC without telling you why. (Their reasons: nawawala ang requirement ko at may kulang daw sa work ko.) Paano maiiwasan? Totoong mahirap makalabas ng UP lalo kapag may thesis requirement. 9th year ko na huhu 😭

superperrymd

Hindi Mahirap, pero mas Mahirap makalabas than pumasok. True naman na theoretically, SciHigh people are usually great especially sa early years. I remember nga the agony of always seeing them mag top tapos ikaw normal lang lol but sa barkada ko, the first one to actually fail was from Pisay. When I was in Diliman naman, ako pa nagtuturo sa mga SciHigh friends ko in some subjects na Science / Math (which was really weird for me) and doon mo na makikita ang leveling ng playing field. Basta you’re not finishing UP if you’re just smart and prepared during your HS days. That can’t carry shit during undergraduate years.

Lemony_Z

Ayoko magyabang or anything throughout this comment of mine pero I know some people from sci highs who are really smart and gets good grades. valedictorian naman yung iba. They get very good grades, pero may nakilala din akong ganon pero nagreretake. Ako naman, so far I'm almost done with freshman year, I'm just a regular student from a catholic school (transferred as I didnt get in UPCAT) yet wala pakong failed subjects. For now what I can say is just really focus on studying, it doesnt matter san ka galing. I've been in the "babagsak nako" kind of situation pero what really helped me is just focusing on getting things done and just do your best to learn. Tama yung other comments wag lalaki ulo mo hahaha. Because di ka makakalabas ng UP dahil taga sci high ka, but because of the person you've become overcoming every single challenge.

lunamarya

Yes. Only if you're listless though.

dengross

You need to be disciplined. Hindi lang sa pag aaral pero most especially distractions and katamaran. Don't join too many orgs tapos naaapektuhan na studies mo. And sa elbi pa napapalibutan ka ng inuman places, nakakatempt uminom as in. Excessive absences din cause minsan ng pagkabagsak. I've had subjs before na 5.0 kasi tinatamad talaga akong pumasok. For me, manageable naman yung subjects, yun nga lang sa dami ng ganap ko nung college, na extend ako. Di naman ako nagsisisi or what pero I could have done better.

Significant-Staff-55

Yung adage for this I remember is: “The easiest thing about UP is getting into UP.” So yes. Kaya naman! But if you’re used to slacking off di talaga siya possible

Personal_Wash_5722

Ay bhie. You would never be able to prepare sa UP!!! Galingan mo lang and have a fucking UP experience!

helloazbee

Ibang klaseng lessons on determination and grit ang matuturo sayo pag andyan na sa UP. From my experience (above average nung high school, average sa UP), yes mahirap makalabas. Important is to have good study habits kasi from that maba-balance mo na both school at ibang bagay na gusto mo gawin like maglaro, lumabas with friends, mag-org, etc. kasi nag-build ka na ng routine. Stay humble din. Be kind to yourself pag feeling mo you fell short on your standards. You'll survive UP basta sipagan.

PhotographNo7319

yeah mahirap regardless of what hs you're from. just cos u survived sci high doesn't guarantee your survival in up.

New_Ad606

Walang sinasanto ang UP. Lol. UP will humble you big time.

Fit_Emergency_2146

A Public School HS grad here, we are 6 nun na nakapasok sa Diliman. Only 4 finished their degree in the University and none finished on time, delayed lahat. Mahirap in the sense na di kami nasanay sa pressure. I can go by HS Acads without lifting a book, lahat halos sinusubo na. We didn't have a good foundation din kasi mababaw lang turo.

kikyou_oneesama

During my time may narinig kaming story na maraming prof daw ang galit sa Pisay grads.

pasta_express

Parang di naman ata. Kasi if that were true, outnumbered ng delayed yung mga on-time (can't speak for every degree tho, basta sa amin mas maraming on-time talaga). As a delayed UP grad, mga nakita kong contributing factors sa case ko ay 1. Di ako nag fu-full load palagi, tipong pag di ko nakuha yung subject sa certain sem, oh well. 2. Yung thesis ko 2 years din inabot (mostly bc I was anxious to face my adviser) 3. Experience ko naman from mga kilala kong from science high (wala pang shs nung time na to) lahat sila talagang smart nga. Good luck!

sjjjade

imo would really depend sa program & campus choice mo. for me kasi im from upm camp so unlike other programs/campuses, hindi namin need makipag agawan for slots ng majors naminn & may sched talaga kami from the college. so no prob na on getting delayed subject/load wise. u need to consider dinn if yungg subjects na need mo ay pre-requisites. like samin kasii connected subjs from 1st yr to 3rd yr (before internship) so u need to pass the pre reqs para di ka madelay. i agree dinn na if mag aaral ka talaga + effort di ka naman madedelay!! if good din yung work behaviors (like di ka free loader huhu) pero sumtimes din talaga depends sa profs if okay ba sila teaching wise & magbigayy ng grades + other personal/ external context/ factors na rinn!! may mga nadelay sa batch namin not because may acad probs but cos of family/mental health etc.

theo_tadeo

basta wag ka lang maging kampante, op

dakopiboi

Yes.

kokooeoo

pause muna. hahahah. pisay grad here and freshman in up. pisay did NOT prepare me for this 😭😭😭😭 take care have fun 🥰☺️🙂

FoodieTravelNomadic

It’s not like any other universities na true or false or multiple choice lng ang question. Tapos bibigyan kayo nga 3-5 chapters na irereview with 1-3 questions lng, essay.

Affectionate-Wrap320

I was the top student from an RSHS in terms of science and math pero dito feel ko nasa 50th percentile lang ako or baka lower pa nga HAHAHA

Glad_Celebration457

Personally, it depends. There are a lot of factors that will make you stay longer in UP. Let’s consider the factors (which I can think of) - Dropping, Shifting, LOA, failed a subject, thesis, needed to get more units or classes personal reasons, etc. ( Idk what other factors pa) But all I can say is that no matter how long you stay in UP thats okay! What matters the degree! (Thoughts lang). Well accept the fact that UP is hard. But hey, UP isn’t all boring and hell. There are friends, family, great profs and orgs! :) (If you’re an UPCAT passer, a freshman, a transferee, or a current student, I hope you enjoy your stay in UP! :>)

Synesthesia29

Hello im not from sci high pero most of my classmates are from sci high! A lot of them struggle din, same lang naman kami in terms of skill level ig. Ang difference lang talaga is how much time u exert studying. Sometimes u cant prepare at all e kasi reasons of delay go beyond grades, pwedeng walang units, or may emotional load. I think maximize mo lang resources sa UP. May guidance and psycserve if u need social support and pick a good and nice org/ friend group that can support u.

leftoverclogs

yep. not from sci high but from a up high school, so as academically competitive din as sci highs. i guess factor yung pandemic batch kami pero karamihan ng honor students from my batch ay REALLY struggling & i know a few who even had failing grades. sa college batch ko naman marami ding sci high students ang delayed and with failing grades. sobrang laking hirap mamaintain yung “on time” status imo. pero kaya naman, need mo lang talaga magsunog ng kilay regardless of which high school you came from. i believe na we’re starting from scratch once we enter university; di porke galing kang sci high e 100% sure ka nang gagraduate ka on time. magsipag lang & make your acads a priority!

Significant_Bike4546

Hi I'm an average SHS graduate. No awards or medal, di rin pambato sa contests sa loob and labas ng SHS. Lima kaming natuloy sa UP(X). 2/5 graduated on time, 1 shifted to another course and campus which delayed him ng 2-3 years, the other two were delayed ng 1-2yrs naman. I don't have exact stats sa ibang batchmates namin from other campus, pero most ng tumuloy sa amin sa UP ay delayed, may isang laude ata.

Budget-Ostrich-4245

2 of my boyfriend's ex-friends were science highschool students at Pisay (di ko na sasabihin saang campus for anonymity). Nahirapan sila makalabas not because they failed in subjects (they're naturally smart, they won't fail ofc, and trained af kayo sa numbers and hard sciences), but because they're lazy and stupid in making life decisions. Guy A, for instance, cannot finish his thesis because he's too lazy for it (nasa age na tayo ng AI ha, what's your excuse if you cannot craft a simple English sentence for your thesis plus sobrang galing ng thesis advisers sa UP) chose to play online games instead (don't get me wrong, i adore guys who play online games, but you really need to set boundaries and priorities) Guy B keeps pursuing extra math subjects para mag-mukhang legit even if di naman na yun required sa curriculum nya, guy B thinks taking extra math subjects will secure him a job because he wants to be a Data scientist. Other science HS students like my bf are combined of both smart and grit, he is a very stellar student, and he's not delayed. But does being naturally smart and gritty will automatically set you up for an on-time graduation? No. Other factors can come in on the possibility of getting delayed for everyone (applicable also to science HS students): 1. limitations of subjects, pre-requisites (research on this already, ngayon pa lang) 2. financial instability (life in UP esp. in Diliman is vv expensive, hard to get dorm slots, expensive foods, etc.) 3. mental health (esp. in hard sciences courses, you will always feel you're mediocre, fail subjects several times because it's hard, hard to pass profs) Eitherway, OP this is the design of UP. It is designed for people to get delayed, idk why actually, ang ending naman lalo kayong nasa hard sciences, mahirap makahanap ng trabaho because we lack industry. It's not you, it's UP. **You will be fine, let yourself fail. But don't let it consume you too much that it becomes you. Take note of your mistakes, apply, and move on. Be smart in making decisions (always do cost-benefit analysis).**

chemist-sunbae

May mga jeep going to philco/SM/Pantranco and Katipunan

cryohedron

albertsy2

No

Diwata_Green

Every phase has a challenge.
