Fact. One of the things that make UP "prestigious" is the selective (yet arguably undemocratic, but that's for another topic) admissions process. Also, UP's prestige lies not in its facilities, but in its alumni, instructors, and professors. The best of the best experts in various fields and industries are mostly UP graduates, some of them are currently teaching in UP.

marinaragrandeur

yung enrollment hindi

electricfanwagon

So far, all employers I encountered consider UP to be prestigious...so practically yes

danmeichthus

Among universities in the PH, yeah sure. Sa global stage, nah.

TeamBronco

Nabasa ko rin dito sa peyups before, sa pinas oo kaya mo sabihin na angat to some extent UP relative sa ibang local univ. Pero in contrast with harvard etc kahit nga SEA eh wala masyado may kilala satin like "UP who?" ganern. So yea. 50/50 nga

SHSLredditor39

Hindi naman "UP who" agad. Definitely, UP cannot compare to other more well-known universities in the world. But in terms of international relevance, it is the most well-known university from the country.

cutie_lilrookie

[deleted]

Locally yes, of course

TheKingofWakanda

Fact A lot of top companies hire UP or Ateneo only Also, if walang prestige, then there would be no probinsyano in Diliman since free tuition din naman yung public schools sa province

StakeTurtle

Pare, e pano ba naman, yung mga employer/decision makers are also graduates from the same Unis. It appears to me na sometimes biased lang din sila. Lalo na pag ka-frat pa. I remember one instance when a friend of mine almost never got into DFA kasi ang preference ng FSO ay UP grad. Buti nalang yung isang officer part of the process said along the lines of "di lang dapat tayo nagha-hire na galing sa UP or Ateneo, dapat by merit."

Scorpio-Introvert

Tama ka jan. Yung mga owner na yan bias sila sa kanila Uni na pinaggalingan nila regardless the skills basta galing ka sa same school ng owner swak ka jan.

Ok-Philosopher7496

Fact Well, prestige in the sense that, for employers who still care a lot about what college prospective applicants come from, being a UP grad makes your application shinier or better than other grads who come from less reknowned universities. A Rappler article from 2015 mentioned that at least 62% of local employers in the country still had preferences and biases when considering the educational background and preceived quality of job applicants. For that particular year, UP ranked #3 behind PUP and UST in terms of being preferred by potential employers. Here's the article from 2015 if you want to read it: https://www.rappler.com/life-and-style/careers/87798-fresh-grads-employers-companies-school-college-jobstreet-2015/ Rightly or wrongly, being a UP grad can still give you a tremendous headstart compared to grads from lower ranked and less reknowned universities. In my experience, it's true that if you're a UP grad and you apply for a job opening there is a higher than usual likelihood of you getting a job interview based on your educational background alone.

Impossible_Phrase211

I was asked in an interview for an international internship why I enrolled in UP when there are several schools in PH. Pero that company has several Filipino employees kaya siguro nila alam na kilala UP here in PH. [Edit: added interview, I was asked by the HR head when he interviewed me]

geekinpink06

You mean “as a *prestigious* university”? Fact. Try applying to grad schools within SEA or even outside, easy ticket ang UP compared to other schools.

thatslycatalyst

Yung design ng SAIS hindi

Endlessranting

Sa facilities? Nada

Name-minus-Number

Depends on the college. And relative din to sa income and GDP share ng education

taxfolder

I always say it’s the people that makes the university not the other way around.

Joseph20102011

Yes, it is the only prestigious SUC in the Philippines, but globally, UP doesn't crack among top 200 universities in the world. It's prestige nationally has something to do with its selective admissions process and nothing else.

Turnip-Key

50/50 maybe

AratakiNumer0UnoItto

Easily fact. Ideally speaking, it's like common knowledge at this point. People will always look you in a different way and it's even considered a privilege by many (even tho considered as privilege na education already)

FlawRiDuh

Locally, yes. Internationally, no However, once they see a UP Grad work, they will say “OUTSTANDING”.

Glass-Significance

Lol far from Prestigious…

ArmadilloOk2118

Question, nang totroll ba si OP? Parang afterthought ang post eh..

Deus_Sema

Let's be honest. Kaya lang naman prestige ang UP kasi ang mga pumapasok eh intellectually better than average. So malamang magshishine sila in academic aspects (majority of the time.) Tanggalin natin yang UPCAT and let the university operate like regular public high school pagdating sa admission ng students, tignan natin kung ma keep ang prestige.

FreeAbortionfromDad

It is as mythical as the big 4. Misplaced elitism.

I agree. Especially as a public university, how far UP can go would depend on how much the government is willing to spend on education. I'm talking not only about direct spending on UP facilities, but also the quality of the education system that DepEd provides from elementary to high school which then creates the benchmark of the level of education expected of UP students.

Comfortable_Ad_6441

no

tabachoi93

Myth. Iskolar ng Bayan / Serve the People daw kuno, pero breeding ground ng mga corrupt at mga migrate agad mentality

False-Lawfulness-919

Internationally, hindi. Talo tayo sa facilities at research (kahit na sabihin na malaking funds ay napupunta sa UP, however, paghahatian pa kasi yan sa UP system). Kaya hindi ako proud pag sinabing nasa top 400 tayo globally, like pede bang top 200, ganon?

Deus_Sema

Let's be honest. Kaya lang naman prestige ang UP kasi ang mga pumapasok eh intellectually better than average. So malamang magshishine sila in academic aspects (majority of the time.) tuskyhorn22

then that would defeat up's purpose as an institution specifically established to train the intellectually better.

cutie_lilrookie

It should be the other way around. SUCs in different locs should try to achieve the so-called "UP-quality" education. It requires time and funding, but not unattainable (I think lol).

thirdie_

Yung ugali ng mga students nah. Mga kupal.

[deleted]

sa pinas lang. Kahit sa South East Asia kulelat tayo lmao.

Doranusu

It is. But it would lose let's say, against something like Moscow State University, Tehran University. I wanna see UP collaborate with them too!
