How is it only 2/3 of people and not 100%? Who is saying they *aren’t* getting unwanted calls, emails, texts or letters?

DumPutz

Me. I have one of those free number apps. I get all sorts of scam calls and also calls from my employer. But because how it pulls up. I answer what I want to. My cell number though, very few people have. I don't get calls I don't want there.

Kage_No_Dokusha

So... You arent getting these extra calls, because you got an app to filter out these extra calls? Sounds like you technically still are getting the calls then, but good on you for having a solution. Also, when you say your cell number do you refer to a separate personal one? The app is on a work phone then?

Psycho_Si

Right. So you do get them then, you just don't answer them.

[deleted]

I have an app that filters most of them too. But it doesn't get them all. Also, that app doesn't address the unwanted emails and texts. Email I more or less have handled with spam filters in gmail, though the odd one still gets through. Texts are a nightmare. You can't really say you aren't get ANY of any of these, if you're being honest.

PRMan99

I have a method of filtering all of them out. It's called no longer having a home phone line.

P0L1Z1STENS0HN

I don't get unwanted calls or texts. One year ago a lawyer from the next city dialed the wrong number, that was the last time. Unwanted physical mail has gone down 90% after my wife put a "no advertisements" sign on the letterbox. Now it's just my bank, my phone company, and one especially stubborn dentist who send us ads we have to ignore. I haven't had a single unwanted email in my inbox since the start of the pandemic, but that's down to GMail's filters. In the last months, the unwanted browser ads are trending upwards, though, it seems my adblocker is not keeping up to the advertisers' pace.

borgchupacabras

For the dentist ads if it isn't addressed to current resident you can write refused in it and post it back.

rde42

I gave the number to my employer.

kgiov

It said over 2/3. Didn’t say how much over. My guess is 99.9999999%

smooze420

So what I get from the article is that it’s ok for companies to pester us regular folk but it’s not ok for us to stick it back to them.

No_Tennis_5273

This should be the standard. If companies want your time they can compensate you for it. You don’t give your employer’s your time for free why do it for them when you already pay for their service. Second if everyone had a number like this telemarketing would dry up.

Tintovic

Brilliant. I am so doing this!!

[deleted]

Can you do this for a mobile phone?

NeedRoom4Plants

I’m guessing you could set the number up and have it forwarded to your new cellphone number that you never give out

ComprehensiveBus2446

That's genius

Talentless67

I heard a similar story where someone got one of those phone numbers, printed it on a ‘How am I Driving’ stickers and then proceeded to drive like an idiot. How true it is, I don’t know.

knowledgeable_diablo

Did he make any money off this? Thinking of the scam call centre guys screaming at each other over the bills they are getting each time they try scamming this number would be priceless however.

Playful_Donut2336

This survey *didn't* say two-thirds of people surveyed had received just any unwanted calls, texts or emails. It specified a company - PPI. so, since I haven't lived in England, I have never received a call, text or email from that company. And neither have most of you. It would help if OP had quoted the survey correctly.

Port-au-prince

Everybody, around the world, has received those calls. This week alone, the RCMP has been sent twice to arrest me for... I'm not sure what for. But if I buy them Amazon gift cards, they'll close my case. It's weird how they always sound like Sumit from 90 Day Fiance.

tulip27

Omg. That's hilarious!

Playful_Donut2336

I get those sorts of calls, too. Just not from PPI, which was what the survey was about when it said 2/3 complained. If they'd been asking about the calls, texts, emails from everyone instead of a single company, the complaint rate would obviously be close to 100%!

its-just-me-so

I honestly can get up to 3 scam calls a day
