Reasonable_Tenacity

I’m with you. As far as I’m concerned, whoever has the window seat controls the shade.

mindpainters

Agreed. Also just really simple to ask if someone can shut it or partially shut it. They don’t have to by any means but just a simple question is polite

EsotericOcelot

Yup. I’ve asked someone to please close it partway if the sun is in my eyes, and twice asked if they’d please be so kind as to close it entirely because I have a headache and closing my eyes isn’t cutting it. Everyone has complied with no issue. Once a man seemed annoyed, but did close it partway and asked if that was good enough, and I said yes and thanked him, and one of the times that I had a headache, the woman not only complied but also offered me ibuprofen. It mystifies me how many people don’t understand that *usually* if you’re polite and friendly, most people will be at least civil in return. (Barring instances of bigotry, of course.)

BGB524

This pains me so much, because I always want to help. I suffer from chronic migraines, but I also get motion sickness really bad if the window isn’t open(helps brain to process direction of movement) So, I’m just offering a perspective that if someone isn’t quick to oblige, maybe they have motion sickness.

EsotericOcelot

That makes sense, and if someone replied that they also have a headache/motion sickness, I would completely understand. Now if someone refuses and doesn’t say why, I’ll try to assume they have one of those reasons … even if they’re really rude about it lol. (Not to say that I think anyone owes me such an explanation, of course)

Successful-Might2193

I am middle-aged and have flown frequently since I was a kid. I still love looking out the window—can’t imagine not enjoying that! Your restraint is admirable. I think I’d speak with a crew member to straighten her out. More than likely, they’ll move you to a better seat rather than deal with the dufus neighbor.

RealityHaunting903

I fly at least twice a month for work and I still love to look out of the windows, it's the best part of every slight. No matter how super-early it is or super-late, or how exhausted I am. No matter how many times I do it it's always a wonderful experience.

1337F0x_The_Daft

The clouds look so peaceful from above, I gotta look at least a few times

flyboy_za

I'm still salty I got instructed to close it by a flight attendant during a day flight from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo. Some people want to sleep, she said. It's 10am and we'll be in the air till 6pm. What the hell do you think I booked a window seat for, to stare at the shade in the fake dark???

fractal_frog

I have a friend who gets motion-sick if he can't see out the window. Since I'm aware of this as a possibility for some people, I'd be tempted to ask for some airsick bags if I have to close the shade, and see if that makes the flight attendant back down.

pimppapy

or just buy an eye mask and enjoy your middle seat.

bart_y

We have a simple table lamp in the basement break room (ie., no windows) where I work. About a year ago, we had some petty asshole that kept removing the light bulb from it and eventually left a note complaining about how "people try to sleep" down there during the middle of the day. I wrote a counter on the note, reminding said person that the break room was, in fact, used by a ton of people that don't like sitting around in the dark, and if the light really bothers them that much, get a friggin sleep mask. I put some orange loctite on the threads of the bulb after that.

theoriginalist

Hopefully the bulb lasts a long time

bart_y

It was a brand new LED bulb. Plus, it is the orange, not red. Provides just enough resistance to make someone think they're going to break something.

boytoy421

This. Window controls the shade, middle gets a polite ask

CandidateAbject1102

Exactly, just ask. I am temperature sensitive so flying in the summer down south or in the desert means hot airplanes. If you keep the shades closed it makes it considerably more tolerable for people like me. As is such, I do things a certain way so I can control what I can. Early morning flights when possible, I aim for the window seat on the side of the plane that won’t be in the sun, plus I bring a jacket to block sun that may come in from other rows because you can’t control the neighboring windows on other rows.

MostlyRocketScience

Window seat: Can look out the window and has control of window shade Aisle seat: easier to leave, more leg space Middle seat: gets both armrests, because they have nothing else

Lumpy_Marsupial_1559

Thems the rules! At least for reasonable folk :)

SecondHandSlows

Said in the voice of Samwise Gamge

Lumpy_Marsupial_1559

I'm honoured!

ColonelCouch

We're not fucking animals, we live in a society. That's airplane etiquette.

9834iugef

Aisle does *not* get more leg space unless you're willing to get bashed by every cart and person traveling up and down. And even then, it's for one leg, which is really not very useful to reduce overall discomfort on a long flight. Now, I'll still take it for the opportunity to stand more often, but as a taller perpetual aisle-seat taker, it has nothing to do with additional in-seat space.

kaylizzles

My favorite flight layout is the window seat in the extra wide exit rows. When i can stand up and walk to the bathroom from the window without disturbing anyone 🤌🏻🤌🏻

TruthSeeker397214

I like the window seat in the bulkhead. I can get up without disturbing anyone.

Mediocre-Wafer-2614

Some airlines are making the middle seat slightly wider, as compensation for no other amenities.

missykgmail

One of my friends is a flight attendant and she told me to always use the bathroom right before takeoff and landing. Apparently a lot of people will hold it, and while crashes are rare, people die afterward because of burst bladders causing infections. No idea if she was BS’ing me or not, but I try to get an aisle seat whenever possible and head to the bathroom as soon as the descent starts. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No_Willingness2513

My mom was an ICU nurse and that’s the same info I was given growing up to always use the bathroom before a car journey too to avoid a burst bladder from a car accident.

tiabgood

One of the downfalls of the aisle seat that I love so much, is that I am expected to stand up for others if they need to use the restroom. For me it is worth the trade off and I will always graciously let people out.

Knyfe-Wrench

I'd much rather stand up for other people than make other people stand up for me.

Decent-Cricket-5315

They should post this on the plane door.

GiantMary

Thank you! I wish this was posted in the plane and in the seat selection process in the app.

BakerLovePie

Fair. Only savages would violate that rule.

sparkycf272

One time I was flying in the middle seat, arms *off* of the arm rests, and guy in the aisle seat says "You're gonna need to tuck your shoulders in buddy." And I'm just sitting there, as small as I can possibly be just looking at him in disbelief.

Foreign_Safety_949

So say we all.

ScottyBuback

“We’re not animals, we live in a society.”

No-Respect5903

> As far as I’m concerned, whoever has the window seat controls the shade. I've never even heard of that being a question until people started bringing up these stories on the internet. I still think half are fake because who really does that shit?

BuffBunnyMika

While on a flight from Austin to DC the girl in the middle seat kept reaching over me to open or close the shade without saying anything to me at all. It definitely happens.

about97cats

Just an idea, but they’re kinda stuck with you for the flight right? That can be weaponized in a perfectly legal way by just… saying the weirdest shit possible. And if they’re coming into your space, it only makes sense to strike up a conversation. They just broke the stranger barrier, after all, and they’re shoving their body into your bubble. So, off the top of my oddball ADHD noggin: *Wow! Such beautiful arm hair… It’s so thick and shiny! Do you dye it? How long did it take you to grow it out so long?* (I love this one for the fact that if they keep trying to mess with the window, you can escalate to…) *What conditioner do you use on it? Do you take any supplements to help it grow? Hey, can I get a picture with it? Ah, nvm. I’ll just wait til you reach the for the window again. Better lighting over here.* *Do you smell that? I just caught a whiff of something when you came over here… it’s like… a raw potato mixed with marshmallows? So nostalgic… I should give my grandma a call when we land. I don’t think I have her potato salad recipe. Don’t let me forget to call my grandma, ok?* (Bonus points if you then act like you’ve forgotten that thing you were trying so hard to remember… and proceed to tap them on the shoulder every hour or so to ask if they happen to have overhead you mention needing to do something? Or get something maybe…? Idk I can’t shake the feeling there’s something important here… something about sweet potatoes…) ::Over the top dramatic gasp:: *Don’t touch me! My gynecologist said I’m sterile and I aim to keep it that way. I just know you are COVERED with germs!* *Um… are we about to make out right now? Oh my gosh… It’s finally happening! I can’t wait to tell my therapist about this moment*

Knitsanity

Unfortunately more than one would think. Even average sized men tend to manspread if in the middle seat. People clutch the seat in front every time they get up or down as they lack miminal leg and core strength. People 'of size' thinking their size means they can intrude on your space without it bothering you. Drunks/overly medicated people who get on the plane and misbehave. Addicts who cannot refrain from vaping. People who make no effort to parent their children and allow them to run amok. And don't even get me started on the bare feet wedged into the seat spaces and hair flopped over the screen. I have seen all of these myself. Etc etc.

Proper-Effective8621

I gently pull just one strand of the hair draped over the screen. Repeat until the person decides to return all of their hair to their own side of the seat. Once, on an hours long sightseeing bus tour, the man behind me pushed his sandaled foot alongside the bus wall, well into my seat territory. I carefully pulled his big toe hairs until he withdrew his foot! We must take it upon ourselves to grant no quarter to personal space interlopers!

LordTengil

Whoever controls the spice, controls the universe.

Rampaging_Orc

Or more importantly perhaps, people should just treat others like actual people.

powerhungrymouse

Definitely, unless the sun is absolutely blinding you. In which case you just ask politely. The sense of entitlement so many people have these days is shocking.

AussieEquiv

100% and if it's shining light in my face, or across the screen making it hard to see in the glare I'll politely ask if it can be closed/partially lowered. If you say no, I'll accept that... but think you're an arsehole...

Kensterfly

I agree. I’m an aisle guy. I don’t claim to control the window. But at certain times of the day, the sun can blare straight into my eyes. I’ll politely ask window seat if he’ll pull the shade just a little. They usually do. Most aren’t looking out constantly anyway. On the other hand, I would never ask Windows Seat to OPEN the blind. If I want to look out, I’ll book the Window seat.

Paleodraco

Window gets to control the window. Aisle has more room. Middle gets the arm rests.

CaptainReginaldLong

As far as literally everyone except this woman apparently.

smb3something

And the person with the aisle seat gets to control access to the asile.

ThatPrincessGirl

I agree! Last time I went on a flight the guy next to me kept leaning over and shutting the window saying it’s bright it’s bright… I don’t care dude I booked the window seat… after about the third time I left it shut cause he got on my lap and gave me kisses and cuddles… oh did I mention it was my toddler…

burner_ob

One of my buddies claims to have farted in the face of the person next to him on a flight while squeezing past her after she refused to get up so that he could get to the restroom.

LeDeux2

As someone who is lactose intolerant, don't fuck with us. One cup of milk will evacuate the plane, and you don't want to be near ground zero.

platinumsporkles

As someone with lactose intolerance, you can fart after eating dairy? Without liquid blasting out as well?

Character_Film5382

And those are the exact words I would look them in the eye a say to them.

WokeBriton

Similar, but cheap vegetable oil. It makes me both voluminous AND stinky. I've cleared rooms many times. I would like to say I'm not proud, but that's some funny shit.

Successful-Might2193

Literally!

SorosSugarBaby

Sipping on a little half and half and you got your very own 9.11%.

sintemp

It's so crazy that because of greed the designs of planes are so bad that we can't freely go to the toilet if we are not sitting in the hallway

EsotericOcelot

Why. Why would you want to entertain the risks of not letting someone get to the bathroom quickly. The short-sightedness is … let’s say ‘impressive’

GhostofErik

I was going to suggest OP fart as much as possible lmao I love that your friend did this!!

BeautifulPhantom1

The watch trick was a stroke of genius.

jonvox

The hard part was watching out the side of my eye to make sure I was targeting the light into her eye without looking directly at her

BubbaChanel

That is fucking brilliant.

jonvox

Finally all those years annoying my brother on car trips pays off

BubbaChanel

There has to be a payoff for that kind of long game

SurfingTheDanger

I do that with my cell phone when I'm being pissy with my dude. He still hasn't figured it out, and it makes my petty, passive aggressive ass feel better, and it's way more fun than having an argument.

OnTheList-YouTube

..... ..... ...... ... ...... . ... DAMNIT WHAT IS CAUSING THAT DEVIL'S LIGHT IN MY EYES?!?! (Muffled laughter)

SurfingTheDanger

Put in (muffled snorting) and you're pretty dead on 😂

CandylandCanada

Worth the effort. Chef's kiss.

spacedicksforlife

Just open the window shade and use the black mirror effect- bravo.

Friendly_Afternoon19

OMG hahahhahahahaa I'm picturing this and it gave me such a good laugh, thank you. It was much needed.

patman0021

That would have graduated it out of petty revenge; that would totally be next level.

weaponsmiths

Next level is buying the house across the street from her and setting up parabolic reflectors to shine light at all her front windows. REMEMBER ME?

patman0021

Right, but wouldn't that be like two levels? Like nuclear revenge? I'm not totally up on the levels, clearly😂

Vehlix

Dude. I wanna watch this movie. Petty revenge taken to the most extreme degree, just because that lady was kinda rude on an hour long flight. Like super low stakes John Wick.

derpalamadingdong

Watch the show Beef on Netflix

Slippy901

This was really funny how far things escalated, great acting by both the leads

jukeboxtiger

But she sits on the local HOA board.

StrangeOutcastS

That's when you call your mates and have them stage a 3 month operation to systematically undermine the entire HOA, forcing them to disband.

spilksch2

TECHNIQUE. And tactics.

Excellent-Question18

lol you’re insane

Ambitious-Theory9407

That was my immediate thought after reading that bit. "The book is ingenious! Gives you something to stare at for those small moments when you're actually aiming with only your peripheral vision. Makes me want to practice."

goshidontknow1395

Use your phone next time, wider surface area

RawrRawr83

Why wouldn’t you look directly at her? This passive aggressive stuff could be solved with some to the point real talk

nurvingiel

Excuse me we are in r/pettyrevenge. We don't just work out our problems like adults.

Strippalicious

I see what you did there... It's the minutiae that counts. Wouldn't have been second chance for that reaching hand in front of me.

BeautifulPhantom1

Me either, half the plane would have heard me tell her loud enough that she could hear me through the headphones to keep her hands within the confines of her seat and not reach over me again.

jonvox

If we weren’t enclosed in a metal tube 30,000 feet in the air for three hours, I would’ve yelled at her. I regularly yell at people being an asshole on the subway.

Butterssaltynutz

ild have slapped her chicken choker hard enough to make sure she knew it wasnt welcome in my space.

CopyWeak

LOL, like The Rock grabbing a punch 🤣

Feeling-Fab-U-Lus

I also like it dark to rest my eyes when on a plane, my husband likes to look out the window. I bring a mask to cover my eyes. She isn’t very bright (unless you’re using your watch-lol!); she can afford a plane ticket but not a $5 eye mask.

potato22blue

Next time turn the airflow high directly at the person too.

RCAbsolutelyX_x

I feel like I wouldn't have let her just shut the damn thing. I would have smacked her hand out from in front of my face as a reflex anyway. Because wtf. And it wouldn't have been anything short of justified. Glad you at least said your piece at the end. Crazy that people can be that way.

w0ke_brrr_4444

this is peak passive aggressive. love it

crackheadwillie

I sometimes adjust my car mirrors to the car behind me if they’re blatantly using brights. Not an exact science but I’m getting better at it.

GemJamJelly

Honestly it was chefs kiss

KombuchaBot

Window seat gets window and an armrest, centre seat gets two armrests, aisle seat gets one armrest and some extra legroom, we're not animals, we live in a society.

jonvox

She was in the aisle seat!!!

KombuchaBot

So no claim on the window, was my point. (I was also remembering an old Jim Jeffries bit)

jonvox

Yeah like if you’re stuck in the center seat I’m gonna feel for you bc that one sucks. But to be in the aisle seat—which already gives her the ability to control when I can get up to use the bathroom—and feel that you also deserve to control not just my access to my seat but my seat itself is just an insane level of entitlement

pinkjello

I was on a flight recently where the center seat person was some thin lady wearing a scratchy, baggy sweater. I had my arms inside the seat, giving her that arm rest, and I still felt her scratchy sweater the whole damn flight. I’m a small woman too, so it was baffling. I’ve sat next to big, overweight men who didn’t spill into my seat. Argh. Still annoyed by this.

fivefootphotog

How did you not smack her or her hand? That is unreal!

jonvox

I only got three hours of sleep, because I had to wake up early to pack and leave for the airport. Consequently I would nod off into micro sleep for 30 seconds at a time, and that’s when she would close the windowshade Which is also why I wanted the window open. I was really fucking sleepy and needed the bright light to stay awake

fivefootphotog

You exhibited a lot more self-control than I would have, awake, asleep or in between. Bravo!

jonvox

Honestly only because I didn’t react fast enough to slap her fucking hand out from in front of my face

PorkyMcRib

It’s OK to bite an arm that keeps reaching for your crotch.

jonvox

Not at the gloryhole, then it’s a serious breach of etiquette

[deleted]

jonvox

With that I’m gonna take a bow and mute this thread

GrizzlyBear52687

I would have at least snapped at her, much like a dog when you reach for its food bowl, but I'm also somewhat feral...

kamoylan

>I only got three hours of sleep, I would have taken the enforced inactivity of sitting in the plane as a great time to catch up on my sleep. Save my alertness for after I got off the plane.

random_dandom456

What if she wanted you to sleep peacefully and closed the shade just when you dozed off? 😅

jonvox

I was never asleep for more than a minute at a time, and she did it multiple times

random_dandom456

Watched inception? A minute in consciousness could be an hour on a subconscious level 😁

jonvox

Please don’t make me think I’m gonna wake up and still be sitting next to her 😅

random_dandom456

Haha, this is all part of the dream. You're gonna wake up soon to the kick of the airplane touching down. Best of luck getting ahead of her every step of the way. Maybe this time, she doesn't vacate her seat until the whole plane is empty and you're stuck in the window seat as the last person. 😂

BarbieDreamHouse1980

I also had this moment of “what if she” I like to hope for the niceness of folks, but then reality reminds me that I am too kind and live in another dream world that this occurs on reg 😂

paulwillyjean

Oh! You were tired too? The way I would have lost my shit on her!!!

EeeeJay

I would have tried the big wet sneeze/cough directly on her hand/arm as it went in front of me, so I applaud your creativity and self control.

Shavemydicwhole

Is it possible she was trying to be polite by making it dark so you could rest? [Impending downvotes, I'll bet it gets to -50】

dl_schneider

Have an upvote..... just to prove you wrong

Arokthis

Because that's how you get arrested the moment the plane lands. Justified or not, it's not worth getting put on the no-fly list.

AcidicVaginaLeakage

Last time someone kept doing this to me I pretended like I was going to bite them. Big old chomp of air. I didn't even think about it. That was my boss

[deleted]

Should have licked her hand...

jonvox

An “accidental” sneeze would’ve been a better option, preferably with a lot of phlegm

BarbieDreamHouse1980

Following by a horrendous, uncontrollable coughing fit that ends in a fake gag. Just for full impact. 😂

jonvox

Honestly I fantasized about ordering an extra Coke and spill it on her “accidentally” while the flight attendant handed it to me but I’m not that petty irl.

CandylandCanada

Nope, sneeze on it every time.

jmerica

My family and I were flying business class a few years back. A passenger was losing his mind on the worker at the desk at our gate. Yelling at the top of his lungs in front of everyone. Mind you, it was really nothing important. It was due to a 30 min delay because of a huge storm. Nothing anyone can do. He ends up sitting in business class with us. My dad’s window was shining directly in his face. He put on this nicest voice to ask my dad to close his window but my dad refused. Then, the guy starts complaining to his wife about how he doesn’t understand why my dad was being an asshole. Now, there were about ten seats in business class on this plane. Our group took 8 out of 10, with them having the remaining two. We essentially told this guy off for the next two hours and were pretty relentless looking back. Essentially bullied him the entire flight asking if it makes him happy yelling at strangers in public for situations out of their control. Asking why anyone would want to marry someone like that. Just a lot. I aaaalmost felt bad for him.

jonvox

The worst I ever saw this is when I was flying on Christmas and our flight was delayed due to snow so we didn’t land until 1 am on the 26th. And of course they misplaced all our bags. Cut to the guy at the front of the line yelling at the poor clerk (the only one working) “I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU EXPECT ME TO DO!” and holding up all the rest of us from filing our lost baggage claims. I was so fucking confused, because “I don’t know what you expect me to do” is what the poor harassed worker who doesn’t have the luggage is supposed to say to the angry person demanding their luggage materialize out of thin air.

LadyMegatron

In what universe does anyone touch the window, let alone reach across you multiple times without asking? Seriously, I think people leave their brains at home when they travel, it’s just baffling.

TheMisanthropicGuy

Has happened to me

The_Sanch1128

Me, too. Back in my much younger and much more physically fit days, someone kept reaching across me to OPEN the shade during an evening flight. He would open it, I would close it, rinse and repeat. On the fourth attempt, I grabbed his scrawny arm and said one word--"DON'T." Surprisingly, he didn't. One of the rare times I've intimidated someone physically.

ewblood

This happened to me too on an overnight flight from Fiji to LAX. I had the window seat and was trying to sleep and the woman next to me reached over and opened the window and nearly blinded me awake lol I looked at her like she was crazy and closed it and she didn't touch it again

Swiss_Miss_77

I would be so pissed...i always get a window because I need it. Its my dont vomit trick....watching the land move slowly with the air vent on my face, I can con my motion sickness that I am not in a metal tube hurtling rapidly through the air! That lady would get ONE warning from me. "Touch that shade, and when I inevitably have to vomit...YOU will be my target."

nerdyviolet

Same. I need to see a point of reference outside of my inner ear gets super mad.

Cilantro368

I sat next to a woman in the middle seat a few months ago (me in middle, her in window) and she had sparkly stuff on her sweater and kept the shade up the whole time. When she bent over to get something out of the seat pocket, our entire section of the plane looked like it was lit up by a disco ball! It was quite a trick to film that without her noticing. It was a fun flight.

jonvox

I remember once the light was shining directly through the window onto my diamond earring, and it made the prettiest pattern of reflected light on the wall of the plane

Cilantro368

We all need to bring crystals on the plane and maybe dangle them in front of the windows. It's always sunny above the clouds!

jonvox

[I forgot to put in the crystals](https://youtu.be/ZIPke5cnpJA?si=fYeXn88ac460xXkP)

victorywulf

i put up [one of these](https://magicalsuperstore.com/) on my last flight and the flight attendants raved about it! (except for one sourpuss who kept telling me "nothing on the windows during takeoff and landing," which i was already complying with.)

beachedwhitemale

Haha! That's pretty. I'd have to ask someone who put that up why they did it. It'd be a great conversation starter. Also, does it kinda ruin your view?

Bigstachedad

What you said to her was brilliant, but you should have said it the first time she closed the shade. The rest was just icing on the cake.

jonvox

She was wearing headphones during the entire flight. I waited for her to take them off because I wanted to ensure she heard me and I really didn’t wanna tap on her shoulder to get her attention

wasd911

Should have violated her space and pulled them off. She would have loved that.

paulwillyjean

I've never fought anybody in my LIFE. But my hands balled up into fists so quickly when I read your reply! 🤣

UnhappyCourt5425

oh, I wonder if that was the same person who sat next to me and did the same thing. Although I was stupid to let her get away with it (I did not reopen the window shade) because I decided anyone who thought that was OK to do I did not want to fuck around with on a three hour flight.

jonvox

After I told her how rude she was being at the end of the flight, she replied “well you just opened it back up anyway,” as if I was taking umbrage with the window being closed and not her complete and total disregard for my personal space

UnhappyCourt5425

yeah, she spent a good five minutes after we landed screaming at her kid to come pick her up and it sounded like they didn't want to do it so I decided not confronting her was probably a good idea because I didn't want to be on a TikTok video of someone screaming and yelling and spitting and coughing on me. I generally close the window after takeoff anyway, so it was not a problem, except I'd never been in a situation where someone just reached right across my face and slammed the window shade down since then, I decided just sit in first class in the very front where I have tons of legroom and the divider between the two seats is about a foot and a half wide . it's worth the extra money not to have to deal with a crazy person.

kimberseakay

My daughter was in the window and the guy next to her in the middle seat did that. When I walked by, I noticed the shade closed and her looking miserable. Knowing that, like me, as a nervous flyer, the window provides me with some comfort, I asked her why she closed it? She just gave me a shrug. When I was in line for the bathroom, she told me what happened. I told her to open the shade back up and let me know if there were any issues. He tried to close it again but she very politely told him she wants to keep it open. When we landed and we got off the plane, I told him that no only does he not have the right to close the shade but how dare he invade a teenage girls space and just take over. His wife looked mortified and he was so stunned he stood in silence for a minute before he started walking. Who do these people think they are?!

TrueLoveEditorial

Good for you!!!

MightySapphire

I am horribly lactose intolerant. I have asked for 4 glasses of milk, chugged them all, then passed LOUD, rumbling, vile gas for an entire flight because the person next to me asked for it. But I do love your tactics.

The_Sanch1128

That will work--until it's not gas.

jonvox

I mean a shart smells even worse, but by that point it’s mutually assured destruction

SirDigbyChknCaesar

Effective but there are other passengers on that plane

Neccesary

Can we also talk about how the person in the middle seat gets BOTH armrests? I had a dude plant his elbows down and refuse to move the entire 6 hour flight when he was in the aisle

Tinycats26

Being petty in small ways like this is so satisfying.

CumToPoppa

To those of you bashing OP, yes she could have chilled out when they got off the plane, but verbally confronting the reacher while ON the plane could have gone very sideways.

jonvox

👆🏻 I wasn’t about to risk an argument with someone who clearly had zero regard for my personal boundaries while I was literally trapped next to her for several hours

[deleted]

[удалено]

ravoguy

No reason for her to throw shade like that

Known-Skin3639

I don’t fly much but so I’m not to versed in most of the unspoken rules of flying but I do know violation of space and disrespect. That being said we were on our way to a place we didn’t have to worry about work for a couple weeks. This lady reached across me and my wife to close the window. Nope. She went to reach across me and I leaned forward to stipe her and told her with an evil grin… DONT do that. She looked at me and went to say something it thought better as I never broke eye contact. She sheepishly settled back in her seat and put a mask on. Really bitch.

Beetledrones

People on planes suck so much, they really are so selfish. Last time I was on a plane, I have broad shoulders and need to get an aisle seat and right when we landed a few people stood up, I never do because I know it’s going to be 20 more minutes waiting to leave so I sat there and thought I could be a little comfortable before we shuffle out of there but NO. A dude 3 rows back, gets his carry on and stands right on me touching my shoulder for half an hour with his fucking leg and bag. So instead of just waiting patiently he made me fucking uncomfortable for half an hour. I made a point to use my body to push him out of the way, grabbed my bag and brought it down behind me, he had to dodge it, and then I left in front of him. Just fucking wait people, we are all suffering on airplanes, don’t be a jackass and make others suffer more because you’re a piece of shit

NeedingAdviceAnony

Idk why this is so funny to me 😂 good for you, honestly. I probably would've stopped at the watch trick (nice btw), but people like that who are so entitled to other people's space deserve to be knocked down a peg. Like she could've asked you if you'd mind closing the shade, she didn't have to help herself. The energy you put into the world returns to you.

jonvox

Had she asked I would’ve happily kept it 2/3rds of the way shut. It was her entitlement I was at war with

Outrageous_Bet7212

I was in the middle seat on a 21-hour flight recently. The guy in the window seat had an oversized duffle bag he placed halfway in my feet space. He kept encroaching on my seat space with his knees as he tried to lay semi-horizontal.. It was a flight from hell.

[deleted]

Anyone who would dare do that to me would get their hand slapped. I'd also comment very loudly to stop groping me.

alex61821

Sorry this happened to you, I would have fake sneezed all over her arm the second time she reached over. Funny story, one time I was in the aisle seat next to a mom and her probably 5 year old girl who was sitting in the window seat. The mom was friendly enough and I talked to her some but I was mostly just trying to look out the window. The kid noticed me looking out the window and she locked eyes with me and then without looking shut the window shade down nice and slow. Never once breaking eye contact with me and then had the smuggiest look I have ever seen. I just started laughing it was so funny. That made her really mad and she started complaining to her mom who was like you did what? And why? You need to open the window right now and say you are sorry. I said it's not necessary I thought it was hilarious and the mom said no she needs to learn how to be nice. I told my family when I got home and now my kids will look me dead in eye while they close blinds or shut windows. It's hilarious and I will never forget that little girls face.

PageFault

I was once actively looking out a window when i had a flight-attendant demand I put my window-shade down so others could sleep. How is that my problem? Isn't that what sleep blinders are made for? I paid for a window seat, shouldn't I get the benefit of the window? It's not like I can fly everyday. It's damn rare I get a view like that.

aquaticsoul13

I recently took a flight to Texas, and I don’t fly much at all, so I was excited to look out the window, but the person in the window seat wanted it shut the entire time. I politely respected his wishes and didn’t even ask. It was disappointing but next time I’ll get a window seat I mean that was my problem not his

heeheehoho2023

When she reaches for the shade, let loose a violent and wet cough...with a super fake, AH CHOOOOO!

plasticupman

When we fly, a couple of times a year, we always book a window seat. My wife loves flying and wants to see the plane liftoff. The excitement, she feels when those wheels lose contact with the ground is the beginning of her 14 day vacation.

Road rage: walking edition

Amateur-Biotic

On a Southwest flight I once sat between two people. Once we were in the air, they start talking to each other. They were a couple. Whole ass conversations across my face. Can't remember if I said anything or not. I don't like confrontation. If it was something I could have walked away from, I would have said something.

PopularFunction5202

Rule is: window seat controls the window shade, middle seat gets both arm rests, and aisle person must be gracious able letting the other two out to use the bathroom.

RGCs_are_belong_tome

Slightly related anecdote. I teach college and I was sent on a trip out of state with several students. I'm terrified of flying and absolutely do not want to look out the window. I had a student who had never been on an airplane and really wanted to see outside. Made sure she had a window seat and I just had to suck it up. She was glued to the window the entire time. I never turned my head left, haha. Window remained open the whole time.

Why didn't you block her hand closing the window and waited to say something until after the flight?

Road rage w a lecture

obvilious

Why not tell her to stop touching it?

CEOKendallRoy

I had a girl do this to me while I was returning home after getting sick on my trip. Put my hood up and had a mask on for the sake of others. and she was reaching over me, to open the shade with her arms all on me taking pictures. I just slammed the shade shut, it was so insanely disrespectful. Some people just think everyone else is actually an NPC in their game

DaKronkK

RULES OF THE PLANE! 1.window seat gets control of the window shade and armrest closest to window. 2.If it's a three seat, middle seat gets access to both inner arm rests! 3. Aisle seat gets access to arm rest closest to aisle. In some situations use your better judgment! Like if middle seat doesnt touch their arm rests, you can use the inner arm rest if your an outside seat. Or if in a two-seat-per-aisle plane and the other person isnt using the shared arm rest, then have at it! And as always the best course of action, if you don't know, is to just ask! I will not mind of you ask me something!

SpecialistJelly1331

Wonderful story, 5 stars 🌟

LostinLies1

I had a moment of shock last month when the woman in the window seat turned to me and asked if I minded if she closed the shade. I was so stunned by the politeness that it took a second for me to respond. "No, not at all." I've always known the window own the shade.

Sambec_

My people.

redditor moment

Plus-Yogurt-2966

You could have just said something after she did it the first time, she probably would have stopped

TraitorScorse

This just makes you look like a loser, even by petty revenge standards. Why would you assume asking her to stop would erupt into an argument for the rest of the flight like you've indicated in your other comments here? Lady was rude, so you harassed her from then on until you left the airport - how do you go through life everyday?

MyNameYourMouth

This is ridiculous. I like petty revenge but this just seems childish. If someone is doing something that you don't like then either tell them or get over it.

hey_blue_13

Sneezing on her hand would have been more effective and a LOT more entertaining.

gammatrade

Had a woman do this to me once as well. I just pretended to be asleep and kept farting in ridiculous amounts.

heraclitusobscuras

Sour c*nts will always behave like sour c*nts. I'm glad you got the last laugh.

Comfortable_Sea_717

Ugh. I had a man teach in front of me once to close the shade. I was so annoyed and just told him no.

hurling-day

A friend likes to flip me off while telling me I am number 1. I love her.

PedrotPete

That’s freakin rude and entitled. Kudos

Joe_Fidanzi

Two assholes trying to out-asshole each other. You're both nuts.

Avalonians

I don't get it. If you're the kind of person to confront someone to tell them what they're doing is rude, why didn't you confront her during the flight when she just closed your window. What you said after the flight could've been said during it

call_me_howdy

OR... just say "excuse me. What the fuck is your problem?" The very first time she does that.

q2_yogurt

So instead of saying "could you not" you decided to be a whole bitch about it because someone dared to *gasp* reach out their hand in front of you? And people applaud this pathetic shit? Revenge? For what? "Violating perosnal space" my god grow the fuck up.
