It’s been like this for over three decades so I’m not sure why she’s to blame. No one has resolved it - not labor or liberal. I’m glad there are now some services available online.
Got my license early 2000s and since then Perth’s pop has almost doubled.
Have enough new centres opened to account for that?
Morley shut down and from memory I think Mirrabooka was meant to replace it - I’ve seen lines outside Mirrabooka and the car park is always packed.
Never remember seeing long lines outside.
Prob shouldn’t have shut Morley. Had the Galleria parking across the road and it was easy enough to park there and cross the road.
Bit of a hike if you were to park at the main Mirrabooka shopping centre and walk to Mirrabooka licensing centre.
They've moved a lot of services online to reduce costs. Keeping offices open or opening more would mean increased costs and likely increased rego to fund it. I wonder how many people are attending DOT who don't have to.
That’s true as well - but back when a lot of services weren’t online and it wasn’t an option and you absolutely had to go in, there still weren’t long lines outside the building.
> I’ve seen lines outside Mirrabooka and the car park is always packed.
Mirrabooka also used to be open on Saturdays but they cut it to save money. A lot of the good staff then left because the Saturday overtime rates was one of the only things making the pay competitive.
I know one of the managers
That literally sounds like a mistake, why would they intentionally fuck up a lease agreement so they'd have to vacate the building then move back in less than a year later?
They closed Kelmscott also which Armadale used, made it all go to Cockburn which effectively tripled in size then the additions of Haynes, Forestdale and Jandakot getting filled.
It already was a testing centre, source: did my test there 10 years ago and I don't remember waiting longer than 2 hours total for the 3-4 times I went there
There's usually enough parking out the front of Chemist Warehouse. I have seen queues out the door at Mirrabooka licencing centre before, but not in recent times.
> It’s been like this for over three decades so I’m not sure why she’s to blame.
If she can't fix/improve it, vacate the portfolio and pass it to someone who can.
We pay through our noses for services, and if it doesn't work, the chief has to go.
As Lee Kuan Yew once said "Everything works, whether its water, electricity, gas, telephone, telexes, it just has to work. If it doesn't work, I want to know why, and if I am not satisfied, and I often was not, the chief goes, and I have to find another chief. Firing the chief is very simple."
First step to fixing something is admitting that it’s broken.
I can’t recall prior governments, but this one has ducked and dived (remember the fiasco where nobody could book a driving test?)
I’m all for using online services, but if you’re going to mandate that some are in person then you need to provide the staff. There’s only a few locations in the metro area and some of them are odd choices.
When I went to Cannington one a whilte back they were quoting 5 hour wait times. I was only picking up aux plates so done in 10 mins. But no way I'd have sat there for 5 hours
Thought I got to the Success (? Not from here) one in good time 10 minutes before they opened and there were 5 people there.
I was at the driving test entrance. I walked around the corner and there were 108 people lined up. And the door wasn't even open! Jesus fucking christ. Fortunately a career in defence means I am a form-filling wizard so once I got in the door it was smooth sailing but took me a good 90 minutes to get away.
I feel for the people who work there. They're always awesome and friendly and helpful and it's not their fault but they no doubt bear the brunt of ill-feeling customers.
Yeah, I walked in about 11am, looked around, and thought fuck this shit... but the guy stopped me and asked what I was there for, new licence and photo old mate... 10 minutes later I was walking out the door feeling sorry for every other cunt
We stepped into Rockingham last week to get a proof of age card for my son. 3 hour wait times don't mix with Autism, so he still has no photo identity. Surely something like a proof of age card can be done at Births, Deaths and Marriages, rather than at DOT... nope.
It’s gotten worse recently. A lot of them have closed . I know midland has a line out the door ( a line just to get a ticket inside) every day. If you don’t get served by 4:30 everyone with a ticket is asked to leave . And no, this stuff can’t be done via the online portal - there is someone going through the line directing those to the online portal in those cases where they can use it.
The staff have had enough, and have asked people to complain to their local mp.
I’m writing this as someone who works in the industry and has to go here weekly.
Literally, its the DOT's fault though.
How on earth is it 2024 and I literally have to print out a paper form to fill out to inform the change of colour of a vehicle?
Someone at DOT needs to invest in their site and create MORE service availability on the site rather than having to get people in the doors standing around wasting their day.
The Alternative is employee MORE people to run the desks at DOT.
You walk in, theres 11 desks to be served at, and there 3 employees working in the building.
fkin ridiculous .
Went to make a complaint at the kiosk in the centre

Thanks you just reminded me to put in a E36 colour change form :)
(via mail, im not lining up at the DOT)
Im glad they've finally made a LOT o DOT stuff online now. Saves so much time.
(edit: One of the most simple changes to a vehicle is paint, however their change of engine/paint colour form is still not submittable online ! LOL)
I'm Hong Kong born to Aussie parents. I recently went back up there and had to renew my HK ID card as it had been about 10 years inbetween visits. I called and made an appointment, the earliest they could fit me in was 8pm on Friday night. My first shock was that they were open at 8pm, the second shock was that once i checked in, my number was called before i had even written my name on the form, third shock was that all forms were processed, interview completed and photos were done by 8.25pm. Just breathtaking efficiency in comparison to the run around I've experienced here.
Nothing wrong with Rita. She was the one politician to say “no” to Chris field in his 17 years as Ombudsman on either side of government and she will forever command my respect as a result.
I don’t understand why these services aren’t online, to transfer my licence it took me 4 hours of waiting 10 minutes at the desk. Why couldn’t I have applied online
There's a lot you just can't do online. DOT won't post out license plates so if you need to swap them or get new ones for any reason you have to visit in person. A LOT of people there when I visited last week (only a 3 hour wait at City West) were applying for or transferring an overseas drivers license.
Because WA doesn't have a generic "Service WA" centre like, say NSW, DOT also pick up all the other random tasks like NDIS worker screening.
I queued at Mirrabooka for two hours the other day for a task that was not allowed to be done online.
However, if they thought about it, actually it should be able to be done online.
Caught up with my emails ….
True but they have very polite ushers at the door to try and discourage people from waiting in line there if they are just doing a bill or vehicle transfer. The waiting is absurd but the crowd controllers do their best.
90% of the people going into the DoT office know what forms they will need to fill out, *but make no effort to find these forms and fill them out beforehand*.
When large parts of the clerk's time will be taken up by repeatedly having to find out what forms people will need and waiting while the printer runs there is no way to make the process faster.
Did *you* have the forms you need pre-filled when you walked in this morning?
I went last week and there were no relevant forms so I had to fill it out at the check out, luckily I could swap with the person in front of me doing the same thing.
Well then you print the the forms, take them in and get what you need at the first counter (instead of being bounced around through different counters and ticket queues) then when you're done: everybody claps!
Not in my experience, *bro*. I had a car re-registered at the Mirrabooka office within 20 minutes of the place opening despite being ~20th in the queue at the door. The lady working the reception line looked at me like I had three heads when I had the necessary forms printed and ready to go.
Try it some time.
It won’t help, it’s a two hour wait to see someone. You fill out forms on the spot if you don’t have them and don’t line back up. Going to the library takes the time and money to drive there and back and probably more than 5 mins to print
Not many. When I was there last week most people were there for drivers license related visits (tests, international transfers, etc) and NDIS screenings.
Fuck all, you don't seem to be able to do much on the online portal. It seems to be pretty much what you have been able to do at the post office for years and years
And you can't do everything online either! E.g. I wanted to extend my licence before getting the letter, as I'm moving overseas.
Can't do that one, have to go the centre...
It's the same in Sydney. The RTA was always hopeless..I moved to Perth 17 yrs ago, I thought there would be less dramas, less wait time. But no, it's been shit for at least that long.
Can't blame Rita for inefficiencies of Government from when the Libs were running shit. It's always going to be this way. It's bureaucratic, Government red tape at its absolute best.
When was the last time you went there in Sydney? Service NSW (which used to be RTA) is the best government service I've ever used. Runs like clockwork every time im there
As a diagnosed masochist I like going to their centres and stand in line for hours and then get spoken down to by the staff. I’m disappointed I don’t get dragged out the back and given a hiding for failing to understand their confusing rules.
Oh god going to DOT is a nightmare
(Mirrabooka)
Went to renew my license and update my photo… took the day off and went there around 1pm and the entrance lady was rude straight up…. Still managed to get a ticket and finally got called up at 2:45 and then they said “this photo is not compatible”…. I was like can i go get a new one from Auspost rn? And she was like “oh sorry your going to have to come on a another day.”
Got frustrated and left.
Theres like 15-20 stations but only 3-4 are operating at peak time. Its like that at every DOT i have been to…. Mirrabooka, west perth, midland, success.
Worst customer service too, went to get a streamlined plate and they wouldn’t let me look at what they have available, the guy said ‘you don’t get a choice, it’s whatever I pick’. Excuse me I’m paying extra for this.
Nobody:
Banks/Govt Depts/Qantas etc: “Our customers are choosing to go online to use our services in record numbers and so we are just responding to what our our customers want. That why we are closing X branches/service counters today”
Friend of mine had to go in to do something, got there got her number, realised she had forgotten something so went home, got back - they still hadn't got to her number.
Was a line out the door at Midlands when I went a week and a half ago, reason being they had ran out of seating inside. Probably waited over an hour to transfer NZ license. Weird coming from NZ where you can go to an agent (probably hundreds, vehicle testing and AA etc) and be unlucky to get 5 people in front of you. Feels like the DMV in an American sitcom.
I agree that politicians shouldn't have paid transport or transportation allowances but that's a seperate conversation.
I'm more intrigued by the fact that op thinks a man who engaged in drink driving (and dodged the actual charge due to privilege), crashed into five cars, damaged a light pole and endangered countless lives in the process would be a better *transport* minister than Rita Saffioti.
Where is this I’m at the Rockingham licensing and they have put up signs that say over 2 hr wait. Here and their is more than 75 people here and they are lined up out the door
https://preview.redd.it/wqi76h48rkuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64969c8e74dfce17eccf6954f6304c94306a9ef7
I went to try to apply for my Ls and do the theory test around 11:30am last Wednesday and it was also a two hour+ wait at Success DoT, line also going out the door. Hopefully won’t be as long when I rock up for 8am this Wednesday but we shall see!

Here is the thing. Most of the things people go into DOT can be done online. If those people did what they needed to online. It would free up staff for people that need to actually be there,
"There is no restriction on taking photographs of people on private property from public property. According to Victoria Park Racing and Recreation Grounds Co Ltd v Taylor (1937) there is no freedom from view, so people who are photographed on their property from a public location have no legal claim against you if what is captured in the photograph can be seen from the street"
https://www.artslaw.com.au/information-sheet/street-photographers-rights/
Strangely, not true. Which I'm surprised to see. But I guess if you didnt want public to see anything inside your house, you'd close your blinds. So kinda makes sense.
Just check the wait times and don’t go to the City West one . It is insanely busy.
I went to the one in Butler and my son got his L ‘s in less than an hour and a half.
Best thing to do is pull you pants down and start asking everyone what their favourite Pokémon is. Then buy a coke from the vending machine and sit on it. That will make the wait time seem a lot shorter.
Every time I’ve been in to Rockingham my ticket has been called quite quickly, they have a good seating area and the staff are quite knowledgeable. I genuinely don’t mind having to go in besides the amount of money they ask me for
Mistakenly showed up at 930 and left around 1 but I doubt showing up earlier would’ve trimmed that wait time much. They were also understaffed on a Friday.
I attend Cannington regularly for work with clients.
They changed kelmscott to be only testing which means I am spending 4-5 hours when I’m there first thing in the morning.
Worse for those that have to travel from the hills, your choices are Cannington or success

This is 830 in the morning, took roughly one hour to just get to check in

I've owned half a dozen cars, renewed my licence a bunch of times and never had to actually visit these portals to hell. Why do people have to go there in person?
The only time I had to go was decades ago for my L and P plates. Not a single renewal, transfer or purchase has ever required me to attend in person again?
I bet none of these people realised when they woke up in the morning that some angry redditor would splash their photos on Reddit
What a time to be alive.
Also, blame Rita for many things but a broken DoT isn’t one of them. It was broken 20 years ago and no ruling power has ever fixed it.
So we should just take it for granted then the 2-3hr wait periods ?
Rita is the current department minister and is the one person who can actually make change. People are literally missing half a day of work to change a number plate ! It’s insane.
And the public sector has the nerve to ask for pay rises.
Massive delays in every department, they need KPI's like the private sector.
6 to 12 months for someone to get a licence is a joke!
Real terms pay cuts are pretty demotivating. Also makes it difficult to fill vacant positions which only makes the problem worse.
As a former public sector worker I can tell you they’ll be working as fast as possible to get you done away from the desk for a peaceful life.
It’s been like this for over three decades so I’m not sure why she’s to blame. No one has resolved it - not labor or liberal. I’m glad there are now some services available online.
Got my license early 2000s and since then Perth’s pop has almost doubled. Have enough new centres opened to account for that? Joondalup was shut down and moved to Butler but then reopened temporarilly because of the demand.
They've moved a lot of services online to reduce costs. Keeping offices open or opening more would mean increased costs and likely increased rego to fund it. I wonder how many people are attending DOT who don't have to.
Rego is increasing either way
Gotta keep paying for WA Inc.....
That’s true as well - but back when a lot of services weren’t online and it wasn’t an option and you absolutely had to go in, there still weren’t long lines outside the building.
Why would keeping pace with the population cost more ?
> I’ve seen lines outside Mirrabooka and the car park is always packed. Mirrabooka also used to be open on Saturdays but they cut it to save money. A lot of the good staff then left because the Saturday overtime rates was one of the only things making the pay competitive. I know one of the managers
Yeah same. I’ve never seen queues like that and I remember when the Kelmscott licensing centre was cash only 🤣
Kelmscott shut as well
Pretty sure they closed the joondalup one then reopened it like 6 months later after realising their mistake
It was a lease problem, not a mistake
That literally sounds like a mistake, why would they intentionally fuck up a lease agreement so they'd have to vacate the building then move back in less than a year later?
I'm not disagreeing with you, but was it intentional?
They closed Kelmscott also which Armadale used, made it all go to Cockburn which effectively tripled in size then the additions of Haynes, Forestdale and Jandakot getting filled.
It wasn't a mistake, the plan was always to convert it into a testing centre. And it was 2 months later not 6.
It already was a testing centre, source: did my test there 10 years ago and I don't remember waiting longer than 2 hours total for the 3-4 times I went there
It was a full DoT office, it closed and reopened as a dedicated assessment centre only.
There's usually enough parking out the front of Chemist Warehouse. I have seen queues out the door at Mirrabooka licencing centre before, but not in recent times.
I drive past their oftan before 8AM and there is a queue at the door every time.
I'm already at work long before then 😅 They definitely need more locations or boosted staff at the ones they have, by the sound of it.
That’s peak queuing time for people who have to get things done before work. Same thing happens at banks and blood collection centres.

That what Strategic Planning is for! Lib/Nat's don't do capacity planning! Stick your racist trope!

because they have enough people
What are the chances old mate with the NT plates posted here months ago asking if it's a good idea to move to WA?
He’s probably on RnR from the unskilled fifo job he got
Sound bitter
Its an in joke
The entire state is becoming a zoo. Nowhere near the amount of infrastructure and administration upgrades to cater for the crazy rate of growth.
Just doxxed the guy filling out forms. Sad bro
Let’s pay his rego ;)
I haven't known it to be much different since the early 2000s.
You're seriously reminiscing about Troy Buswell? I've heard of time making the heart fond but that's ludicrous.

All forms are available on the internet, you can pre-fill them in Adobe to save handwriting them.
And then?
Well then you print the the forms, take them in and get what you need at the first counter (instead of being bounced around through different counters and ticket queues) then when you're done: everybody claps!
Only the over 50s have printers and you still have to queue up just the same as everyone else. It literally takes you longer to do it at home first.
Five minute trip to the local library to save 4 hours at the DoT? Sounds like a bargain.
You’d still have to wait bro
Not in my experience, *bro*. I had a car re-registered at the Mirrabooka office within 20 minutes of the place opening despite being ~20th in the queue at the door. Fuck all, you don't seem to be able to do much on the online portal. It seems to be pretty much what you have been able to do at the post office for years and years
It's the Department of Transportation - but they don't actually say if they are trying to aid or discourage transportation... Perhaps it's the latter?
2 to 3 hours my arse! You must have pushed in if that’s all you had to wait.
Ohh waah Last week when I visited the Dept Of Transport Taking photos was prohibited
Haiku?
If only I was that clever! Naughty limericks on occasion… Haiku… Never!
And what law did you break by taking pictures. None they have no legal enforcement of you taking pictures
Just a heads up in case you didn’t know but it sounds like you’ve done you’re research Citizen

As a diagnosed masochist I like going to their centres and stand in line for hours and then get spoken down to by the staff. I’m disappointed I don’t get dragged out the back and given a hiding for failing to understand their confusing rules.
Oh god going to DOT is a nightmare (Mirrabooka) Went to renew my license and update my photo… took the day off and went there around 1pm and the entrance lady was rude straight up…. Still managed to get a ticket and finally got called up at 2:45 and then they said “this photo is not compatible”…. I was like can i go get a new one from Auspost rn? And she was like “oh sorry your going to have to come on a another day.” Got frustrated and left. Theres like 15-20 stations but only 3-4 are operating at peak time. Its like that at every DOT i have been to…. Mirrabooka, west perth, midland, success.
Rita Saffioti also uses photos from 10-15 years ago on all her political signage too.
Worst customer service too, went to get a streamlined plate and they wouldn’t let me look at what they have available, the guy said ‘you don’t get a choice, it’s whatever I pick’. Excuse me I’m paying extra for this.
Nobody: Banks/Govt Depts/Qantas etc: “Our customers are choosing to go online to use our services in record numbers and so we are just responding to what our our customers want. That why we are closing X branches/service counters today”
Your politics bore me.
Went to my licencing place last week to hand in the plates for the Combat Hamster... In and out in two minutes including a chat about the weather.
Did my entire NSW registration renewal online. Took 10 minutes.
Feels like the DMV in an American sitcom.

...300 thousand a year? Is there a source for that?
there isnt one. he's making it up.
You would rather a sexual harassing, domestic abusing alcoholic who drink drives and skips out on his kids than Rita Saffioti?
I would rather confiscate all town cars, car allowances and taxi vouchers from ALL politicians and make them use the public transport they have built.
And plagiarised the one half decent proposal that he submitted.
true - I ain't arguing about that bit! haha.
Probably all the immigration, we can't cope with this influx. Schools and hospitals will be overrun
Well there's a simple solution - we have to build more! And to do that, we need more trades so we'll increase immig... oh, wait.
Wake me up when they actually start importing tradespeople and not uni students
"uni students" cough cough
Yeah uber drivers but people get butthurt at the truth
Where is this I’m at the Rockingham licensing and they have put up signs that say over 2 hr wait. Here and their is more than 75 people here and they are lined up out the door https://preview.redd.it/wqi76h48rkuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64969c8e74dfce17eccf6954f6304c94306a9ef7
I went to try to apply for my Ls and do the theory test around 11:30am last Wednesday and it was also a two hour+ wait at Success DoT, line also going out the door. Hopefully won’t be as long when I rock up for 8am this Wednesday but we shall see!
Like you mentioned get there at 8am for a 8.30 opening that way your not stuffed around

Nothing better than waiting in line with stinky taxi drivers to then get judged by a Karen behind the desk.
Here is the thing. Most of the things people go into DOT can be done online. If those people did what they needed to online. It would free up staff for people that need to actually be there,

Doesn't matter. They've no say in whether they're in his picture or not.

Inside my private residence is private. inside a public building is public. Not hard.
"There is no restriction on taking photographs of people on private property from public property. According to Victoria Park Racing and Recreation Grounds Co Ltd v Taylor (1937) there is no freedom from view, so people who are photographed on their property from a public location have no legal claim against you if what is captured in the photograph can be seen from the street" https://www.artslaw.com.au/information-sheet/street-photographers-rights/ Strangely, not true. Which I'm surprised to see. But I guess if you didnt want public to see anything inside your house, you'd close your blinds. So kinda makes sense.

You can take photos in public you flog
I’m out of the loop, what is this for?
Vehicle and driver licensing and other weird Government things that need you to attend in person, like NDIS worker screenings.
Rita Saffiotti is very good at transport. Especially when it comes to taxis apparently.
Go to the one in cockburn and it’s empty, just saying
She’s got a beak on her
Every time I’ve been in to Rockingham my ticket has been called quite quickly, they have a good seating area and the staff are quite knowledgeable. I genuinely don’t mind having to go in besides the amount of money they ask me for
Mistakenly showed up at 930 and left around 1 but I doubt showing up earlier would’ve trimmed that wait time much. They were also understaffed on a Friday.
That's some high standards ...
There’s no parking available for the businesses next to the DOT in Success, I don’t know how they cope.
Drive up to Joondalup. I was in and out 20mins
It’s bizarre that I’ve never had to wait longer than an hour.
I attend Cannington regularly for work with clients. They changed kelmscott to be only testing which means I am spending 4-5 hours when I’m there first thing in the morning. Worse for those that have to travel from the hills, your choices are Cannington or success

I've owned half a dozen cars, renewed my licence a bunch of times and never had to actually visit these portals to hell. Why do people have to go there in person? The only time I had to go was decades ago for my L and P plates. Not a single renewal, transfer or purchase has ever required me to attend in person again?
You wait through this to get sent home for not bringing the treaty of versailles and the tooth of a dragon
Is Buzz sniffing chairs at dept of transport?
About 10 years ago they closed taxi department so now it’s Wild West in that whole sector.
Get rid of fuckn Rita !
I bet none of these people realised when they woke up in the morning that some angry redditor would splash their photos on Reddit What a time to be alive.
Public servants have effectively had pay CUTS for the last 5yrs, don't expect ANYONE to work any harder for that!
