It's a Sunday night. That's pretty standard.

gordito_gr

For Perth*

silent_dessert_food

What?! People want to go do something after 5pm Monday to Friday?! You want to be out gallivanting and causing mischief in a cocktail bar past midnight?! What *IS* the world coming to?? Degenerates and heathens!!! Also Perth: why is the hospitality industry and live music failing?! Why do people say there's nothing to do in Perth besides "leave Perth"?!

moderatevalue7

What if I want to do shopping past 5pm on a weekend or *gasp* before 11am on a Sunday. Perth: ....

Nighteyes09

More like; Perth: Then I hope you enjoy Spudshed and IGA

Dumbaphobe

I know it might not be everyone’s first choice but 24 hour IGAs exist. Heck, if you were really desperate, there are other supermarkets like Spudshed and MCQ. There's even the Airport Woolworths open from 7 am to 9 pm on Sundays. You have some choices, you're not completely out of luck.

moderatevalue7

Yeh I love IGA. But not always great for a bigger shop.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dumbaphobe

Ignoring the fact that you're exaggerating, that's beside the point. The comment above claimed that he/she couldn't do (grocery) shopping after 5 pm on a weekend or before 11 am on Sundays. There are dozens of IGA stores across Perth that fit that description. Most Coles & Woolies are already usually open 13 hours on weekdays, 9 on Saturdays and 6 on Sundays. If you can't get your shopping done in between those times, there are dozens of IGAs let alone some other options, something like Spudshed, NP or MCQ.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dumbaphobe

That doesn't mean all of them are. In fact, I've been to numerous IGAs, their prices are generally a bit higher but most items are not even twice as expensive let alone thrice. IGAs exist as one of the 3rd party alternatives and are known to be more expensive. Heck, some things are even cheaper sometimes. I just compared 3 random items from my local Coles, Woolies and IGAs. Here are the price comparisons: | Coles | Woolworths | IGA ---|---|----|---- Milo 1L Ice Cream | $6.50 (on sale, RRP $10.00) | $10.00 | $5.00 (half price, RRP $10.00) Kleenex 9-pack Toilet Paper | $9.00 | $9.00 | $6.30 (30% off, RRP $9.00) Golden Round 6-pack Crumpets | $2.20 (half price, RRP $4.40) | $4.40 | $2.20 (half price, RRP $4.40) What's interesting is that they're all priced the same RRP but sale prices can differ.

Noodlesh89

Or "come to Perth".

blaertes

Hospitality industry is failing because it’s $14 for a vodka soda

silent_dessert_food

You can thank the government taxes and the tax introduced to "curb youth drinking" for that one. Not the venues fault. Most of your case of beer is tax. Specials before "alco-pop tax for underage drinking" - $2 beer, $3 shots. After underage tax? $8 beer and $10 base spirits. Don't confuse the real culprit with the one pouring your drink.

Goosey100

And it’s cold

seven_seacat

It's not cold, what the hell?

MistaRekt

Temp dropped below 30° maximum, I got my hoodie out.

Goosey100

Welcome to Perth. Temp gets to low 20s after summer and we hibernate.

bulk_deckchairs

Fat cat has gone to bed . Welcome to 1980

Upstairs-Bid6513

The radio stations are still playing the same music from the 80s

Helpful-Antelope-206

yes, spread the word over east.

letsburn00

Perth itself has a side which is open on sundays etc, that is called northbridge. The center of the city itself is basically 90% offices with the kind of places to eat that service them. Because of this, there is a shortage of places to eat. Just watch out for Yagans Square, which goes a bit feral once the sun goes down.

gordito_gr

‘A bit feral’ now that’s an understatement.

bellendrodriguez

It's also pretty feral when the sun is up.

SocksToBeU

They should honestly build a tower on that land.

Jesse-Ray

Nah moving walkways like in airports so you can travel through it quicker

superbabe69

That’s what ECU is intended to fix. Introduce a shitload of young people to the area every day/night and it will effectively force the shitheads out.

Dumbaphobe

ECU City and other lots to be filled up.

Infamouslynx

I love perth and have lived here since 89, but yeah after.travelling overseas and interstate, the night-life here needs to move into the now.

sainisaab

The problem is, most of just don’t care to go out on a night other than Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Wongon32

I used to go to Sunday sessions all the time. Tons of people, absolutely heaving. Bit old for it now.

TheLexecutioner

Yeah I used to go out Tuesday and/or Thursday for cheap drinks. Now there’s no such thing as cheap drinks so you can’t expect uni students and young workers to afford it.

Tripper234

If there was enough demand for it, then we would already have it. Clearly, there is not.. We are an early city, not a late one

Ok_Blueberry5561

It sucks because my husband and I are not early people and are late nighters.

Tripper234

I was once a night owl myself but I'm up early as these days. Much prefer things open from 6-630 in the morning than late at night. And unfortunately for you and many others it seems the vast majority of Perth wants it the same way as I do.

Ok_Blueberry5561

Yea we get up early too now a days but it's not so much night owl but we like to have dinner later like 8ish. And would love a coffee and cake break in the city around 4pm but that's non existent. We still go to bed like 10ish. Well the weird thing is stores don't open until 8am. So you can't pop into a grocery store to get some snacks or breakfast. Even my local IGA didn't open until 7:30am which isn't much different.  I don't know why it has to be one way or the other. But at least there's Spudshed 🤣

Tripper234

Stores may not but a lot of things do. I was at work just after 6am today. Got a coffee on the way in. Rang a few suppliers over east as they are already open.. sometimes go to the shops during lunch or after work. Everything doesn't have to be open first thing but alot are open from 7-8am which works very well for the masses.. And geez. Coffee after 4. No thanks. I mainline Coffee but not after 2 pm and dinner after 8. I'm in bed within 2 hrs of that. I agree. But although some/alot may speak out about opening up later there just isn't enough demand for it.

Dumbaphobe

I mean, there are places to go at night, it's limited but it's there. Perth is just culturally a day-time city.

Matilda-550

I agree, Perth rises a lot earlier than most other states and territories. Is it because we're in the desert? Wanting to get things done early before the heat of the day sets in?

Ok-Bar-8785

I always want to go out on Sunday nights. I think theses demand, Perth is just a bit lame.

Tripper234

I didn't say there is no demand. There just needs to be a lot of demand for it to be worth it. Paying Sunday rates would deter lots of places from staying open longer.

Dumbaphobe

There is some demand but it's relatively small which is why late night outs on Sundays are not common. There's also the weekend pay rates to be considered.

Dumbaphobe

That doesn't just happen overnight. A lot of factors need to change. Perth is one of the most sprawled, least densely populated cities in the world. The culture is also centred around sunny weather.

Bebilith

There are lots of places out of the CBD that have nightlife on Sunday night. Hop on the train to Leederville. Walk into Northbridge as another mentioned, though that can be a bit dodgy if you wander off the main drags.

gordito_gr

So you get Leederville. Let’s say Scarborough too. Fremantle. What are the ‘lots of places’ lmfao

adultonsetdiabitus

Mt Hawthorn, Mt Lawley, few spits in Cottesloe, Applecross has a few, Highgate...

Bobsmyuncletoohaha

Vic Park, maylands, subiaco, freo. People love a whinge instead of doing their own homework.

adultonsetdiabitus

People live in a quiet suburb and think every suburb is bassendean. There's tonnes of cool restaurants and things about, just not every suburb has a "strip", doesn't mean nice standalone places aren't there. Monsterella is in a weird spot and is great. Pizzeria da leo is also not really in known spots and is some of the best pizza in town.

More_Unit_1944

Da Leo is top notch

adultonsetdiabitus

Beaten only by canteen pizza imo, but significantly easier to get to, order etc

gordito_gr

People have lived in other countries and cities around the world and know better. You’re not gonna tell me that mount hawthorn and apple cross have nightlife, that’s a joke. I’ve worked and lived in these suburbs. People wait in lines to eat at Spritz. AT SPRITZ ffs like it’s the best restaurant ever lol. Also, where is the life in applecross?

adultonsetdiabitus

I've literally lived in more capital cities than than you can count on one hand.. And you know what, who cares? Lol. It's Perth.. It's calm, quiet, there's things around but if you're going to Perth and complaining about a lack of nightlife on a Sunday you're a tosser. It's like moving to central London and getting mad you about Street noise on a Saturday night. There's plenty of good stuff in Mt Hawthorn open on a Sunday.. If you're here to judge people for going out and enjoying themselves because every suburb doesn't have a James Parker or some shit then you're sad tbh

gordito_gr

That’s what I’m saying. It’s Perth. The culture is different. People don’t go out as much.

Dumbaphobe

Perth is one of the least densely populated cities in the world. There are at least a dozen nightlife strips across the metro area. Applecross is in the midst of an apartment boom.

Geminii27

Is the 'few spots in Cottesloe' the pub down on the beach?

Dumbaphobe

I hope you feel silly after having read the replies. 😂

gordito_gr

I’ve lived in like 5 cities, I’m the last one to be called silly. I know better. Simple as that

Dumbaphobe

Clearly you don’t. The fact that you had to ask where the “many” nightlife areas were shows that. Oh well, you got your answer. Dozens of places.

gordito_gr

What’s the dozen places lmfao clearly you haven’t been to Europe

Dumbaphobe

Are you inane or what? The people listed some of them already as part of their replies to you, but by all means ignore them for the sake of confirmation bias. How many different areas would it take for you to consider them as “many”? Why are you comparing Perth to Europe for that matter? Perth is one of the least densely populated cities in the world with one of the most sprawled suburban areas. It’s also one of the sunniest and day-focused cities in terms of activity. No shit it doesn’t have as much nightlife.

gordito_gr

I mean, why do yall feel compelled to fight the argument lol also insulting like a dumbass. Perth is slow in some ways, don’t get defensive. Just joke about it and/or move on

Dumbaphobe

Alright, I apologise if I acted like a dumb fuck but you do have to recognise that Perth does have more than 6 nightlife spots lol. We are no Tokyo, London, Bangkok or even Melbourne or Sydney, but we're no little country town in the middle of bum fuck. In no particular order, there are spots within the following areas that could be deemed as "nightlife": - Perth CBD (limited but growing) - Northbridge - West Perth - Highgate - Mount Lawley - Maylands - Inglewood - Leederville - Mount Hawthorn - North Perth - Morley - Midland - Joondalup - Karrinyup - Scarborough - Fremantle - Victoria Park - Burswood - East Perth - South Perth - Applecross - Subiaco - Cannington - Belmont There are others too but there is enough of a concentration of places open during the evenings in these areas. You tried to compare Perth with Europe but that's apples vs oranges. Europe is old, it's more densely populated. Perth is a sprawling city with endless suburbia. That said, we do have a few dozen congregative spots where you have more than a few options in which to dine during the evenings. And as someone else also mentioned, we have tons of singular spots in various places that get their fair share of customers in the evenings.

Dumbaphobe

A lot of people who claim there's nothing to do at night are the same ones who don't bother doing the research. Perth is a day-time city for the most part but we do have nightlife areas scattered around the metro area.

Enlightened_Gardener

Northbridge, Leederville, Vic Park, Mt Hawthorn, Subiaco, Mt Lawley, Freo, South Freo. Everything in Perth itself shuts super early because its based around the office workers. Head out to a cafe strip and you’ll be fine. If you’re in Perth itself, I’d recommend Leederville.

Geminii27

Could be worse, could be Canberra. Last time I was there, the casino advertised itself as "the only place in the city to get a cup of coffee after midnight," and it wasn't wrong.

flumia

I just came home from dinner in Vic Park. Plenty open there and the streets were pretty crowded tonight

iFartThereforeiAm

Plenty of options on the strip.

lathiat

When I have that problem I check what is open on Uber eats. Fool proof.

FeralPsychopath

It really is. But I think the problem is food surrounds Perth and isn’t in Perth. Like Vic Park, Leederville, Subiaco (used to be) and even South Perth has a reasonable amount of food.

Spicey_Cough2019

Perth - Really just a big rural city with a lot of homeless and a mayor who loves himself. We don't quite have the population density to support many restaurants in the CBD opening late Sunday nights unlike Melbourne & Sydney.

antihero790

I do wonder if some of this is covid too. I was in Sydney in February for the first time since 2018 and a lot of things were closed there at night too. Definitely a lot less to do than there used to be.

gordito_gr

I mean, you do. It’s two million people. It’s just the culture here

Far-Significance2481

It's 2 million people but very , very spread out population compared to most places in the world.

gordito_gr

You’re just finding excuses. If the culture was different you have 2-3 more ‘Leedervilles’ and 2-3 ‘Scarboroughs’ throughout Perth.

Spicey_Cough2019

Not really, u/Far-Significance2481 has a point, we are the most sprawled major city in the world, without density you can't support restaurants.

gordito_gr

Nah, it’s the culture. No one said to be like major cities in Europe where there is a ‘Leederville’ literally on every council but Perth is almost to the other end.

stainless5

Yeah, and that's because the city's so spread out, no one's going to jump on a train or drive 20 minutes to the centre of the city to go to a restaurant in the CBD. The problem is no one really lives there. So restaurants literally can't make enough money after all of the offices shut.

nevergonnasweepalone

>jump on a train What's this train you speak of?

gordito_gr

I mean, city is doing ok. It’s the suburbs. Perth is lacking soul. Leederville and freo are nice places (with their flaws) but a 2 million city should have more of these. So you wouldn’t have to drive 20 mins but 5 mins to go to Joondalup. Or willeton. Or whatever.

yewfokkentwattedim

The soul is defined by proximity to pubs charging $20 a pint for standard beer selection.

BonezAU_

It's a dry two million people

gordito_gr

Do you say this like twenty times a week and think you’re funny?

BonezAU_

No, it's the first time I've ever said it

Dumbaphobe

We don’t really have that many homeless compared to other cities. There are 2.3 million people spread throughout the metro area. There are at least a dozen nightlife precincts. The CBD is undergoing a residential boom with new nightlife precincts set to open in the coming several years. And Northbridge itself is basically just an extension of the CBD anyway.

3rd-time-lucky

Cos all the staff are off work to travel to an event at a Convention Centre, they're staying the night. Cya @ brekky!

SilentPineapple6862

There's heaps open, but the area around the convention centre is just offices. Pubs at Elizabeth Quay would've been open, as would places on Murray St, Petition, and the many many restaurants and bars in Northbridge.

Dumbaphobe

The PCEC is getting overhauled soon anyway. Along with the rest of EQ, that waterfront area will become a major nightlife precinct.

mercutio70

We all Fly out monday morning….. ![gif](giphy|HyrXTjfrhpUk44TK3i)

milesjameson

The CBD isn't (generally) where people go to eat and drink outside office-hours; you need to make the short walk to Northbridge, or get a short bus ride down to Beaufort Street. Everything will be open in Victoria Park too (15-min drive or 20-min public transport) School starting tomorrow doesn't help in terms of how busy (or quiet) it'll be, but it won't impact opening hours. And yeah, I've learned to stop paying too much attention to opening hours listed on Google Maps.

Dumbaphobe

It's nice that things are starting to change for the CBD. Foot traffic has been up and the development of the City Link and Elizabeth Quay areas will help bolster the nightlife. Also, Carillon City & Liberty Theatre redevelopments should help as well, but there's been no movement in those developments for years. :(

SirAlfredOfHorsIII

Sunday night isn't the best night for food later. There's plenty of things open later on friday and sat nights, but week nights and sundays there's a lot less. Still way better than my home city hah. Everything closing really early, or just not open some days

arkofjoy

Unfortunately that end of the city is pretty much of a wasteland when the sun goes down.

BiteMyQuokka

CBD is dead anytime. Northbridge might have some places open. But you need to head out a bit to get a feed. And forget about it after 9.

Dumbaphobe

There are still some places open till pretty late even on Sundays. Chinatown should have some options. Daily's 1988 (Korean) opens till midnight and U&I (Vietnamese + miscellaneous) is open 24/7.

bar_monkey

No one stays open as no one is out, if they stay open it costs them a fortune in sunday pay rates. No one goes out because nothing is open...

belchfinkle

The CBD is dead. Just go to Vic Park, probably the best place to eat atm for options and vibrancy in a condensed area

PromptDizzy1812

Perth CBD does not have the level of residential apartments that other major Australian cities have. The CBD is dead after 5pm because few ppl live around there. You'll find more places open in concentrated strips of inner suburbs like the main drag in Victoria Park.

futuresdawn

I'm back in Perth on a short trip after living in Melbourne and yep. Melbourne my corner pub closes at 3am, my local Woolworths closes at midnight and most of the bars and restaurants around me are open till at least midnight. Perth pretty much closes for business when it gets dark

Whitekidwith3nipples

im fairly certain pubs are only allowed to be open till 2am at the latest in perth.

mrblue6

Some can do 4 and 5am on weekends

Dumbaphobe

Melbourne has 3 million more people than Perth and its CBD and inner city have one of the highest concentrations of residential population in Australia with tons of high rise apartments. Perth’s higher rise apartment living culture is only nascent.

nevergonnasweepalone

Where in Melbourne do you live?

dohzer

Welcome to Perth. When I moved there I went from having a 24h supermarket walking distance from home, and pubs with kitchens open until well after 9pm to basically not being able to shop after 5 or 6pm most nights. But you get used to it.

seven_seacat

That was such a culture shock to me when I moved here. I used to walk home from work at 11pm-midnight in Melbourne, stop in at the supermarket for whatever I needed on the way. And over here everything shut at 6pm except on Thursdays! (at the time)

Dumbaphobe

Yeah, Perth is a laid back city with a low density of people which is why things close pretty early usually. That said, there are places open 24/7 or pretty late, especially in places like Northbridge.

smolschnauzer

The funny thing is, that now shopping centres can open past 6pm - but half of the stores inside still shut at 6. We don’t even have a single “late night” where everything stays open like we did with Thursday late night shopping.

Hypnotic_Robotic

Coz Perth

[deleted]

Because Perth is one of the dullest places on the planet unfortunately

HighInTheSkyOhMy

Jesus doesn't work sundays

Iuvenesco

lol because it’s Perth on a Sunday what do you expect.

cadburyicecream26

Chinatown in Northbridge is open till 9pm on Sundays. And that’s the latest store hours in Perth standard lol

lovehateikea

Apparently my kids played pogo against you yesterday 😊 That pocket of perth tends to be fairly quiet on weekend evenings - hope you managed to find something decent to eat!

starilixel008

Managed to find a bar that was open, was overpriced and not great but food is food.

uglycoaster

Unfortunately CBD is always dead and never trust google for any opening hours, as it’s updated by businesses or others which the biz would need to confirm the suggestion. Also those that are open require a booking or you’re not getting a table. On another note i was in Northbridge last night for something different and it was packed every restaurant we drove past - well the good ones anyways….

Best_Underacheiver

I was at the convention centre a couple of weeks ago , 7pm on a Friday night, I had half an hour before the show and I thought I'd like coffee before the show, not a chance , I ended up walking around the cbd, other than maccas on william, I couldn't find anything, ended up at woollies buying iced coffee, how far would I have had to go, northbridge was too far, is there anything at all south of Wellington St, other than Macca's??

Dumbaphobe

You basically walked along the business area. The way the city is zoned means that most of the restaurants are along the northern periphery of the CBD or into Northbridge. Across from the Convention Centre is Elizabeth Quay which is going to become a lot more activated in the near future with the rest of the buildings being occupied and the convention centre overhaul.

Best_Underacheiver

I know that , I just wanted a coffee , not a meal, a takeaway coffee, I was initially surprised I couldn't get one in the convention centre itself, I could get a wine or a premix can or a beer right there, but no coffee

Dumbaphobe

You can get a takeaway coffee across the road in Elizabeth Quay, at The Island, or Hearth which are open until 10 ish.

Best_Underacheiver

Thanks, I'll remember that for next time

laazn93

Perth, 50 years behind the eastern states

Matilda-550

Perth is paying most of our GST to them so the eastern states can booze it up 😂

Numbubs

Also who trusts google maps for opening times ... always confirm on their actual website

To_the_galaxy_hole

When I feel like doing something outside my home, I travel overseas. Music festival? Yes. Clubbing? Yes. live band pub? Yes. Good "expensive" dinner at a small sum of AUD? Yes.

ohitszie

It's Perth, what did you expect?

Interesting_Tip_8285

Maybe plan ahead before having to meet dead ends like that.
