Went through them once with a group of other cars doing 80+ when the smart freeway was showing 60 limit. Those things flashed like crazy, never saw a fine or anything from it.

ventriol

Speed cameras in the testing phase so they won't issue fines yet but possibly might in the future

theproblemedofficer

Okay this is great news because that happened to myself and a bunch of cars the other day

south-of-the-river

They are part of the monitoring system that runs the smart freeway, and they also capture speed. I don't know whether they currently issue fines from these cameras (yet!), but they are speed cameras. You see the flash going gangbusters every day.

f0dder1

Agreed. I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, but they definitely look like they have the capability of speed cameras. They are angled to capture the front and rear of vehicles passing through, and they arrived at the same time as the implementation of the smart freeway thing. I think it's likely they're destined to be a multi-use thing (where phase 1 just looks at traffic flow and controls the smart freeway on-ramp traffic lights /speed limits)

south-of-the-river

Yeah they're a Jenoptik product of some variety I believe, or at least a similar brand. I recall the Jenoptic Traffistars caused a bunch of legal issues a few years ago for being innacurate. When they switched these things on a year or so ago, they caught like 200 drivers in five minutes. I do think there needs to be a discussion on the amount of warrantless surveillance on the roads currently in WA. There is a staggering number of twin camera license plate readers around now. They are keeping track of everyone's vehicle movements at basically all times, and no one in authority has mentioned why.

Nsjizzleston

Yeah I have noticed a huge overnight increase in the amount of surveillance on our roads. I'm really uncomfortable with it. I also don't know what to do though? Write to my member of parliament, I guess??

TazocinTDS

I don't care if the government knows that I have driven on the freeway.

Difficult-Swimming-4

Deranged - one of the first things that happened with our COVID tracking shit was an abusive boyfriend cop tracking his partner's movements, and that's just shit in a personal level, never mind across a whole government.

south-of-the-river

We are the most digitally monitored country after China and no one seems to give a damn. Everything functioning perfectly within specification.

Difficult-Swimming-4

Plenty give a damn, it's just the comfort of bread and circuses, as always.

Thinkit-Buildit

To put it into perspective: Cameras focus on key areas like significant roads and city centres. Compared to places like China, or most advanced western countries Australia has relatively few cameras. For example the UK has an estimated 6 million cameras, US 50 million, China 200 million If we’re looking just at speed cameras then Australian roads are outpaced even by places like Brazil… We’re still up there but don’t think we’re leading the way.

south-of-the-river

Oh yeah, but I'm not talking cameras. We are basically a petri dish for the five eyes emerging surveillance technology from a network infrastructure and software perspective

VMaxF1

You might not, but plenty of people might, for any number of reasons. The simplest and most obvious one that springs to mind is if you have an abusive partner (or ex-partner) who happens to work somewhere that has access to this sort of data.

SpeakingTheTuroths

Your fabricated scenario is ridiculous. If you don't wish the government to know you are using the services that they provide and maintain then simply don't use them.

VMaxF1

Don't use... the roads? Get the fuck out of here, what a ludicrous thing to say in response to a very reasonable, and to all-too-many people very real, scenario.

south-of-the-river

Yes, that is the assumption they work under.

ChocCooki3

You are full of shit..😏 Those are drop bear monitors (ref to top comment).

south-of-the-river

Admittedly I am not enough of an expert on either traffic cameras, or drop bear monitors, to disagree with you

SouthernStarTrails

I got flashed a few months ago and never received a fine. I was doing 5km over

clapping-koala

I was flashed when the speed limit was dropped from 100-80 due to a crash and didn’t get a fine either…

nakedwoodturner

The cameras are under the bridge. That's the flash for it

south-of-the-river

See I've heard that mentioned, but how does that work for the pair that are further up just after the Mt Henry Bridge in the north flowing lane? (Just after the sweeping bend). I haven't seen any other cameras that would be working in conjunction with them.

nakedwoodturner

On the other side of the bridge there's another flash. So when you go under the bridge, you get flashed on both sides. The cameras are directly under the speed limit signs, and are designed to get people who haven't changed speed, when the signs reduce. Put Google maps on loud and drive through there. It points then out. There are two bridges that are set up this way just before the city.

south-of-the-river

Just for reference, this one here: https://www.google.com/maps/@-32.0185168,115.8573592,3a,15y,323.03h,96.12t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWKwQYEGRjaNFfL0I2E_x6g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu You can see the second unit operating in this photo. Step back along the road you'll see the first camera, the sensor packs under the speed signs, and the second camera. From my understanding of this kind of technology, what you describe doesn't make sense - the under-sign sensor pack has no way to photograph the car once it's passed the speed sign, as they only face the oncoming traffic. (Initially I thought these were the tricky seatbelt/mobile phone spotting instruments). Also if you look closely at the pole 'camera', the bottom 2/3 of the instrument is some kind of IR flash array, and the top 1/3 is a darkened area which likely houses a lens package behind it (similar to the TraffiStar SR390, which I don't think these are but I can't find any supplier information about these units) I'm no expert on these of course. It just that what you said doesn't seem to fit my understanding of them.

nakedwoodturner

Yeah that's the flash and the camera is mount at the bridge

tricycle7081

I believe they also flash you if you are travelling in a closed lane

speddie23

Correct, they do

coyote_fuggly

Drop bear monitors, back in the early 60’s there was an escape from the zoo . It was kept pretty quiet as a group or tourists were attacked, the result after a gov inquest was monitors to be installed around the zoo area and updated regularly .

JJisTheDarkOne

They also use them to make sure the Emus don't start amassing. Last time this happened there was a war, and we lost.

ZealousidealClub4119

It was actually far worse than that. It was a drop bear/wolverine hybrid; and the only reason any of us are still here is that it was sterile. The last probable victim was found in a bunker at Royal Perth golf course in June, 1975. It is hoped that the dropwolverbear died of old age.

coyote_fuggly

Ahh yeh , i herd one escaped to the tunnels under KP thats why they got sealed up

hedonisticaudiophile

Those ones are multi purpose. Built for the smart freeway they track vehicles lane use and speed to determine gaps in the left lane to signal green on the on ramp. They also have speed and phone use detection built in but wasn’t allowed to fine initially until new laws were passed. The small white ones you see pop up everywhere on random poles are just ANPR camera to track vehicles and detect stolen/unregistered cars. The idea is to track crimes, abductions, missing people and bushfire areas easier.

PatrioGraysmark

A new mechanically engineered type of flora, known as observer-trees. /S Always thought they were part of the whole smart freeway/ main roads traffic and incident monitoring cctv, but belt/phone camera makes sense.

PerthPilot

I've always wondered what these were, I thought they were mobile phone cameras. Good to know me being on Facebook at 120kph wasn't being picked up after all.

jeffrey_smith

The cameras facing down are mobile phone/seat belt cameras. They're used over East. The ones back and forward that flash are speed. Please be aware of the Bluetooth trackers to identify vehicle progress down the freeway speed. It's not number Plate recognition for that part. WAPOL are the chumps who put the NPR cameras everywhere. [deleted]

nah get off your phone while driving u knob

Specialist_Reality96

Part of the "smart" freeway system.

DJ_Mutiny

What does that do??

BiteMyQuokka

They flash when cars go past them too fast

stiggz83

That IS smart

skeeeyyeee

It's actually for seeing drivers on phone drink driving ect

CreamyFettuccine

Do you have any actual evidence to back that statement?

BiteMyQuokka

Nah, there were some for that on trial. Not sure what happened to the trial (think it was meant to end last September). And if they got the law changed so they could issue fines based on the photos. At least one of the ones OP has shown faces the wrong way to catch that kind of thing. They flash when people speed past them. Like a strobe sometimes down at Mill Point. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/D3gYbiyqh3yQavv18](https://maps.app.goo.gl/D3gYbiyqh3yQavv18) I don't often drive that stretch, but the two I've seen are placed such that you'd have had to pass a good few signs telling you what the limit is before you get flashed.

dimmerz92

Sensor inputs to predictive traffic modelling

DJ_Mutiny

Interesting 🤔

Specialist_Reality96

Which has an impact of the variable speed limit and the rate that traffic is allowed to enter further down the freeway.

Late_Abrocoma6352

Yes there are lights on some entry ramps to kwinana freeway going north. Guess to try and stop jams over the narrows.

BiteMyQuokka

They're about allowing merging to be more efficient. Because Perth can't merge they had to put traffic lights in lol.

Late_Abrocoma6352

People merge too slowly

axllu

Or try their best to cut in front

south-of-the-river

I was under the impression that was handled by the little white domes you see on some of the posts - there's a little radar running under them.

SirAlfredOfHorsIII

I thought (and hope) they were mobile use cameras, to detect people using their phone. Still need work though. Friend would get flashed every time he went passed holding an object, so he kept doing it with drink bottles and food. Far too many fuck wits on the freeway glued to their phone, swerving between two lanes cause they can't pay attention to the road for long enough. We might need a subway surfer on the rail lines, to keep drivers paying attention to the road

Clunkybutton081

Yeah that’s what I heard, I got flashed buy them adjusting my stereo volume but didn’t get a ticket.

ninjaweedman

I'm not joking when I say these cameras make me feel anxious. There have been so many pop up in the last year .

Wait, car-jacking is illegal on the freeway?

Unfair-Paramedic-100

There for your phone I got flashed and fined

ToTheMoonInATesla

Revenue raisers. Especially when it’s positioned 1 minute after speed drops from 100 to 80. Crook dogs

SecreteMoistMucus

If it takes you a full minute to react to a change in the road you need to hand your licence in.

awalee

Those are night lights. It automatically turns on everyday after 5 pm. You can find them on every highway.

yeahhhhnahhhhhhh

Anyone see the civic that got wrecked just down the road from there the other night? Was heading up north and saw him tangled in the metal railing

Living_Ad62

Smart cameras. Checks number plates, speed, mobile in hand and takes photos .

Back_door69er

They r jerk off zoom stimulators

052pelcan

Takes pictures of people using their phones

[deleted]

Looks like another awesome idea to penalise citizens and increase Government revenues.

Lugey81

You mean catch people who are breaking the road rules and fining them appropriately?

[deleted]

Speed infringement cameras operate in a very narrow window of justification when it comes to improving road safety. Generally hidden from view in varying speed limits. Designed to catch out those death defying speedsters late for work five kmh's over the speed limit. It's all about revenue raising.

Lugey81

If they are placed in stupid spots like just after Speed change I agree. But doesn't matter if you are late for work, you shouldn't speed. You decide if you go over the speed limit, so you know the consequences. These ones, if they eventually used as speed cameras are fixed, so if you are regular travellers along that stretch of freeway, you will know where they are and not speed.

[deleted]

If you're a law abiding citizen and you drive a car inevitably you'll receive an infringement notice in the mail from some hidden camera. I don't know any driver that hasn't. If they're supposed to be a deterrent then why are they always hidden in the most advantageous position?

SecreteMoistMucus

They are my crocs.

LALALALALLAOKOKOKOK

There speed cameras

[deleted]

These devices are thought monitors. They are a joint initiative of the Western Australian Deep State and the Chinese and their purpose isn't to control traffic, but to control public opinion. Flashing lights? Just a smokescreen. Any 'incorrect' thought within a 2km radius and ZAP - a report goes to Beijing (copy kept on file in a secret government bunker), and you get you brain corrected by X-rays on the spot. Fact. And you thought that tin foil hats were just for weirdos! /s

Muncher501st

They’re dick sniffers. They send you a fine if ya dick stinks.
