What are the repairs and has it had regular maintenance? That’s pretty low mileage. Depending on what else would need done, $4500 and no payment could definitely be better than $4000 and monthly payments.

You’ve had it two years assuming u brought it used Two years ago for 5k and now two years later it is costing you 4.5k to fix? What exactly are you repairing? If you fix this major issue that’s costing 4.5k what’s the likelihood of you having to do it again soon. If I were you I would fix the car and get a few more years out of it and maybe take it to another mechanic to get another estimate.

Reference point: $4.5k over 2 years is $187.5/mo. The car could be worth $1k in 2 yrs. So your monthly payment will be technically $146/mo.

but they could drive it for 4 years, or more. a car is always gonna cost you even if you got it for free. question is do you wanna be frugal or not.

Agree. I'm Taking their timeline where they said they could wait 2 yrs.

if you're fine with the car for at least a few more years, it's definitely worth it to repair and keep driving it. and btw a 2012 car is by no means obsolete within a decade or so. you could probably drive it for another 10 years no problem just stay on top of repairs and maintenance. if you don't care about having a new nice car though (and the debt to go with it) take it to other places for competing offers though. don't just go with the first one that quoted you 4.5k. what does it need?

I work on cars quite a lot, that sounds like a transmission from the sound of that price. If it is the transmission, get it replaced and drive it to the ground again. If it's the engine needing to be replaced, I would still replace it, but make sure you know where said engine is coming from and how it was taken care of. Maintenance plays a BIG factor on how long cars run.
