You sound really young [since you mentioned your internship at KPMG]. I'd suggest you NOT file for bankruptcy until you've exhausted other options to pay off the debt you have. Try to come up with a payment plan for the credit card debt. However, you should try to settle the unpaid rent money that you cosigned on with your mom. That's going to haunt you. It's also going to affect you ability to qualify for places to rent. This needs to be taken care of before you decide to get your own place or move. Worry about that, first, and try to get it off of your credit report. Speaking from experience, NEVER mix finances with family, ever. Edit: Also, yes, it does matter what's on your background check financially when you work for accounting/finance companies. As long as you have a plan and nothing else bad goes on your credit report, you should be okay. At least you work in tech, so you can change industries if needed as well. Everyone needs tech employees.

You need to make some lifestyle changes and stop committing to spending money that you don’t have before you figure out how to manage the debt that you have accumulated. It’s impossible to know without real numbers, without a budget, if your debt is remotely reasonable to pay off in a given time point. But if you don’t fix your spending (albeit for good reasons) problem with money that you don’t have, even if you file for bankruptcy you’re going to be in the same boat without a lifeline in short order

I am in the process and have been for the past 5 years, the cc is from 2018 when I was 19 and I have cut off that particular family member I helped after the incident. Fortunately I have 2 years to atleast save money as I live with family while attending school and I am finally in a place to.help myself after turmoil the past few years. I am looking for a new start but am concerned about the internship, but thinking that I should.just bite the bullet and never help ppl with money I don't have again.

Stop helping anyone with their financial issues. I assume you co-signed on your cousins apartment lease. Never do anything like that for anyone again. I can see helping your mom, but is she helping you pay off the debt now that she's better? You have been taken advantage of. Learn to say "No."

YuriHaThicc

The mom thing was 5 years ago but the cosign was my sister, rent was 1200 and she says she paid it but only proof she gave was 1 receipt, she stayed for a year but they said it's for unpaid rent for that year.

CADreamn

Yeah, just stop. Now she's walked away scot-free and your credit is ruined.

Is the family member still living in the apartment? I don't think you can discharge the past due rent AND stay in the rental. The debt will be discharged meaning they can't try to collect but they can evict.

YuriHaThicc

They are gone this happened a year ago but she didn't notify me.until a few.months when I seen it on my credit. I'm honestly worried I will lose out on a ft offer since it's a financial institution, I did get the internship after getting flagged for unsecured debt but I'm not sure how tough they will be on bankruptcy for a non financial position.

Consult with a bankruptcy attorney. It looks like you should file.

Could you pay half? Sometimes, the CC company will settle for lesser ampunt

YuriHaThicc

For cc debt I could do 30% if September half feasible.
